University of South Dakota

This medium-sized rural Midwestern school flies mostly under the radar, but its recent expansions, as well as its top-notch political science program and student newspaper, help it get noticed. Small for a state school, USD offers a more closely-knit and low-key college experience than SDSU. The campus is somewhat divided between those who focus on academics, where they have the opportunity to interact with professors and enjoy limited class sizes, and those who concentrate most on sports and their social lives. Although Sioux Falls is not far away, the campus is relatively isolated; Vermillion has limited entertainment options, so fraternities and sororities are a popular form of distraction. The largely white student body tends to hail from the surrounding area. There is however also a noticeable Native American subculture on campus, which includes a Cultural Center and an Institute of Native American Studies.
