Summary

Vanguard University is a private university based in Costa Mesa, California. The school offers liberal arts and professional studies in four graduate degrees, along with 21 undergraduate degrees in 15 departments of the undergraduate college. Vanguard University is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).[1] Vanguard is named in the 2012–13 Christian Colleges of Distinction.[citation needed] In 2013, Forbes magazine ranked the school #460 in out of America's Best Colleges.[2]

History

Vanguard has its origins in the Azusa Street Revival of the early 20th century. The Southern California Bible School was founded in 1920 by Harold K. Needham, D. W. Kerr, and W. C. Pierce. The school moved from Los Angeles to Pasadena in 1927, and was renamed the Southern California Bible College in 1939 when it gained its charter to award degrees. It gained university status in 1999.[3]

The presidents of the university have been Harold K. Needham, Daniel W. Kerr, Irvine J. Harrison, John B. Scott, O. Cope Budge, Emil A. Balliet, Wayne E. Kraiss, Murray W. Dempster and Carol Taylor.

Vanguard University teams, nicknamed athletically as the Lions, are part of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), primarily competing in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC). Men's athletics has six teams and Women's athletics has seven teams.
