L
ocated in the historic Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Westminster College is the only accredited private liberal arts college in the state of Utah. With an undergraduate population of 2,168, Westminster prides itself on an average student to teacher ratio of 11:1, and is considered one of the top liberal arts colleges in the West. The college is made up of four distinct schools – the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, the Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business and the School of Education – and offers 34 undergraduate majors. Business programs are especially popular as marketing and business management tend to be two of the most popular majors, along with psychology and English. Aside from academics, students at Westminster cite the urban location and the proximity to nearby mountains as some of the best aspects of the school. Westminster is often overshadowed by the much larger University of Utah, also located in Salt Lake City, but students at Westminster take pride in their small, friendly, and academically rigorous community.
Despite its location in one of the country’s whitest cities, Westminster prides itself on a wide range of diverse students. The students are from all over the world. As a Westminster student you will interact with different people and grow within yourself as you expand beyond your boundaries. The campus is small, intimate, and located in one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods. When students aren’t hitting the books, they often escape to the nearby mountains. The students also tend to be laid back and know how to enjoy the nightlife that SLC has to offer. "
Westminster is a wet campus, so alcohol is common, but also better regulated. Lectures, theatre events, concerts, movies are well-attended. The dating scene is fun and laid-back. I met friends through classes, clubs, and extracurriculars, because we are right in the city it's a good social scene. Doors in the dorms are definitely open doors in the dorms. 2:00 AM on a Tuesday, people are talking, watching movies, having fun, study parties abound
," says one student.
The intimate class size is one of the most attractive aspects of life at Westminster. "
The professors at Westminster will know you by first name. Most will have you call them by their first name. A relationship outside the classroom is often made. The learning/teaching style or technique is unique and very application based. They steer away from memorization in order to focus on the application of what you are learning. I thing this helps for the information to 'stick' and not just slip away upon completion of the class
," writes one student. The one complaint common amongst undergrads is the high number of commuter students, which creates a somewhat empty campus after regular classroom hours. Despite this, Westminster students seem to be perfectly content with the friendly, intellectual, and outgoing student body. One student writes, “
The school is amazing. the size is perfect where anyone can walk around campus and be comfortable and wave and say "hey" to fellow classmates. Everyone is welcoming, nice, funny, and so different.
