Big School, Big Opportunities

Some of my students are very turned off by big schools. They may have wonderful academics or sports, but those schools may feel overwhelming. However, there is a chance to really meet wonderful people at a large school and feel at home right away. There is no better way than signing up for activities in areas about which a student is passionate. This means an instant bond with people you would otherwise pass on campus or not get a chance to chat with in a large lecture.

Remember that there are huge advantages with a big school: more classes, more people to meet and more great professors.

Involvement. This could be through anything from participating in research to diving into student government or helping with a community outreach or service program. Whatever the setting, share your talent and energy. Often ‘making your mark’ at a big school is a by- product of being generous, no matter the setting or means.

If you’re an athlete or a math whiz, it’s a lot easier. Otherwise, become involved in campus organizations, the school newspaper or radio station & make a name for yourself. It also helps if you know someone who can pave the way, like maybe a famous alum. Be creative, your public awaits!
