Career Prep

Students make college selections for all sorts of reasons. Some are firm about building critical thinking skills at liberal arts colleges, while others look at college as a requisite step to a career. Whatever the case, all colleges are important in preparing for a career.

Think about the most important skills to succeed in the business world (or in the profession of your choice). College is a time for free expression and building relationships with fellow students and faculty. It is a great time to start up an extracurricular activity or continue an activity about which you’re passionate. Never before have there been so many excellent internships afforded students in colleges of all sizes. Some colleges give course credit for internships. Others have excellent career services which can match students with summer internships. This goes for both liberal arts and pre-professional majors. Mindset and attitude are extremely important for every college student. Students shouldn’t hesitate to try new activities, sample courses and take risks. Who knows what career opportunities and ideas might open up?

Take extra courses in your major, get internships in the summer, strike up relationships w/those who have the most experience teaching that course, & collect great LOR’s along the way. This will go a long way to greasing the skids at graduation time.
