What are the most popular extracurriculars?

This answer will vary from campus to campus. Some schools have a unique niche, i.e. a Quidditch Club, while others allow the current students to create a club of interest and that may be popular temporarily or become a fixture. Most schools have a standard lineup of extracurriculars: chess club, debate team, Zumba classes, etc. Keep your eyes and mind open and you may find you're a natural at something you never tried before.

What are the most popular extracurriculars?

Interest in various extracurricular activities will vary from one college/university to another, so it's virtually impossible to say, in general, what the most popular extracurriculars are. On the webpage of each institution or in other impartial evaluations, however, there will often be an indication of what activities are particularly popular at a given school. Although this would surely not be the most important factor, this information could be part of the puzzle In making your college decision. Activities at most schools will run the gamut of just about anything that a person could be interested in doing - sports, art, music, dance, theater, community service, student government . . . etc., etc., etc., the list goes on. Quite often, if an activity doesn't exist on your campus and you'd like to start an organization focusing on that activity, you can do it and get some financial support for the project. Someone wanting to start a club or activity usually just has to present the signatures of a certain number of people who would like to see the activity offered, and the number of signatures required may be quite small. This process is often handled through the student union offices.

Employers and colleges like to see extracurricular activities on your resume including leadership experience, athletics, foreign languages, writing/technical skills and volunteer work among others. Taking a leadership position while in school is a big plus in a students resume. It shows willingness to step up to the plate. Is portrays to employers you can manage and handle responsibilities. If you enjoy coding and creating applications for computers while at school, you should mention that in your resume. Fluency in other languages opens doors when applying jobs.

What are the most popular extracurriculars?

Sports and clubs are the most common extracurriculars, but any activity that you are involved in over time and in depth can be a valuable addition to your college applications. Rather than collecting numerous brief extracurricular activities, choose one or two that you really enjoy and find meaningful and stick to those throughout your high school career. Whether it's yearbook or the accordion, drama or tutoring, what matters is that you invest significant time and energy into your pursuits and are able to reflect thoughtfully on how they've contributed to your overall development as a student and individual.

What are the most popular activities at your high school? Are they the same for all high schools in your area? Popular extracurriculars will vary by college. Some campuses are highly political, others are actively green, and others are into Greek life. Most college students belong to a couple extracurricular clubs or organizations, but usually not as many as they were part of in high school. Usually there will be some type of activity fair in the fall, so you can learn about different organization, what they do, and get to meet the members. This “show and tell” of clubs will help you determine what is most popular on your campus. You might try out half a dozen clubs, but eventually become a regular member of only a few.

Set yourself apart by finding an activity that you are passionate about and do this throughout high school. The most important tip about extracurriculars is: be consistent. Find one or two things that interest you and stick to them. This shows your ability to persevere and commit. These are characteristics college look for. One student I know was passionate about the Civil War. He spent his high school years caring for the gravestones of the fallen. This set him apart from other applicants.
