Ou intense academic atmosphere and successful alumni in almost every field. We are known as intelligent, friendly jocks and that is absolutely the atmosphere on campus.

Amherst is best know for its academics; it is consistently ranked near the top of the US News list for liberal arts institutions, and is currently #1. It is also known for being a very small community (only 1600 students), which is conducive to building a feeling of community on campus. The athletic teams are also fairly well-known, with several teams achieving success in NCAA tournaments in the last 10 years.

Amherst is probably best known as a small, New England, highly selective liberal arts college (a fairly stereotypical picture). Some of the things that make us different from you average liberal arts college are our Open Curriculum and our membership in the Five College Consortium (with Mount Holyoke, UMass Amherst, Smith, and Hampshire). Our student body is known to be very liberal, as we are also often cited as having some of the most knowledgeable, engaging, and accessible professors in the country. Our President Tony Marx is also a public figure supporting education and socioeconomic diversity at the college level.
