To be blatently honest, I didn't consider many other schools, at least not with much seriousness. Appalachian had a sense of community that I didn't experience anywhere else, and the beautiful campus and kind student body were just a major plus. Appalachian also had a strong focus on teacher education, and they offered my major, Child Development. I think what i liked most about App when i was looking, was that they welcome anyone and everyone, from all walks of life, to their school. That open minded feeling really drew me in, and kept me here!

Joshua

Appalachian State University is unique because it provides students with a fair mix of liberal and conservative educational options; furthermore, App provides a healthy and safe physical environment in which all of the students can focus on their education without much worry about their financial or physical safety. With programs such as book-rental, Safe Ride, and Writing Center, many worries that the students may have can be aided by the progams that the school provides.

Jamison

Appalachian is unique because it has a large variety of student. They range from students interested in Greek life, to hippies, to studious people, to hardcore Christians. If you come to this school, you are bound to find friends that have a common interest with you.

Megan

All in all... Appstate is fun, and has a campus that you will easily fall in love with.

Jesse

Life at App is interesting. The weather is a bit nuts (I've learned to always carry an umbrella in my backpack) and the town is too small for my tastes, but it does have its perks. If I want off-campus food or to see the local unique crafts for sale, I can just walk to downtown. If I need to go grocery shopping I can take a free bus ride on one of the several routes as I have no vehicle. And if I feel in the mood for pizza, I have about 5 different choices to call for a delivery.

Katie

I feel like Appalachian State is unique in the fact that it allows for a lot of outside activity. The campus and the town the campus is a part of is in the mountains, and aside from the winters, the weather is usually cooperative with the want of the students to be outside. On a sunny day, you can find students playing football, slacklining, talking with friends, and just enjoying the beautiful views of the mountains and Boone. App students are also dedicated to keeping the campus clean and green which is unique to other schoosl I considered.

Appalachian State University is a very diverse University. Many things to learn and see. This college is up and coming and I'd say the place to be in academics and sports. The area is booming with constant new construction and upgrades. I couldn't be happier with the setting either, North Carolina mountains for all snow sports and in the spring the outdoors are unmatched in any state in the US. What more could you ask for but to go to college at Appalachian State University.

Laura

The mountains are a huge difference and the Blue Ridge Parkway is really close. There are a lot of outdoors activities to do in your free time at ASU.

Caroline

At Appalachian State, you are ten minutes away from a scenic hike up to a breathtaking overlook, which is a welcome relief from the everyday stress of class.

Emily

I really think ASU is great place to have your college experience. It runs the gamet of weather atmospheres, you really get 4 distinct different seasons. The sporting events are always pretty good, there's always something to do and new people to meet! I think if you come on a visit and tour ASU, it will be hard to not put it on your list of possible universities to attend.

Christopher

It is located in an area of extreme outdoor beauty.

Nora

The student body here is very tolerant of many lifestyles. I feel that the students here are also really involved in making themselves more worldly. We don't shut our minds off to things unless we feel they are detrimental. The location of ASU is incredible, as well! We see all of the seasons.

Katherine

The friendliness of the campus, is unlike any other campus I've ever been on. After touring many of the state schools like NC State, UNC, and UNCG, I fell in love with Appalachian. I don't go through a single day of school without someone holding the door for me, or saying "bless you" when I sneeze. Outside of polite gestures, its just a very unthreatening environment. No one is stared at because of their appearance, or if they decide to start dancing alone in the middle of Sanford Mall. If anything you usually gain an interested audience!

Loni

The atmosphere here at Appalachian State University is open and easy. It's hard to not be able to get along with your fellow peers. The transition was smooth and it's a very comfortable, relaxing environment to go to college.

Emily

People seemed to be in better spirits when I visited. More hands-on work for my major too- which is how I learn.

Caroline

What is most unique and significant about Appalachian State University is the welcoming atmosphere that is created by the positive attitudes of the students. Even during the winter months when the town is covered in snow and it seems impossible to escape the cold, the students remain warmhearted. More so than at other universities in the state, there is a clear presence of southern hospitality at Appalachian, where students are friendly and polite to friends and strangers alike. After nineteen years of living in North Carolina, it wasn?t until I lived in Boone that I truly felt at home.

Jed

Other than the weather, Appalachian State is a very chill campus. The professors genuinely care about the students. They are role models and know a lot about their subjects. The atmosphere of the campus is like being a home. Most everyone is happy to be there and its so cold . . . no one really pays attention to what you wear.

Mily

The unique quality of my school is that it provides a "clear perspective", providing that the school is located at 3333 feet. Many of the students are environmentally conscious. I would very much call most students here "hippies", politically active, environmentally friendly (including not showering), outdoorsy, banjo players that are volunteer oriented.

Jeffrey

Our school spirit. Football games are so much fun. I've been here for all the national championships and game days are the most exciting part of the year. When football not available we have trails and mountains around for hiking. Also when it snows we have the best slopes in the southeast within a 20-30 minute drive.

Heather

The location is unique, for one thing; Boone has the highest population of any city at it's elevation east of the Mississippi River, and the climate is diverse and more like that of New England than the South. The campus itself is absolutely picturesque, surrounded by mountains and forest, and filled with beautiful architcture and landscaping. The faculty and staff are very friendly, as well as the general student population.

Todd

The price of the semester is super cheap, but is still considered one of the best school's in North Carolina. Definitely the best value in the state.

Cameron

ASU offers not only a community of individuals who are enthusiastic to be contributors to the community itself. Teachers and students alike are vital components to the learning process at this school. Coupled with helping create educational enthusiasm, ASU is situated in a geographical area that provides an infinite possibility of outdoor activities. The campus and surrounding areas are beautiful. Not only does the school have it's own unique history, the location it is in also bears a rich heritage. There's plenty of room to breath at ASU, both literally and figuratively..

Size vs. Location

Jessica

Everyone here is really chilled and laid back. I never have problem asking for help from teachers or students. Everyone is together. Tons of outdoors types of things to do.

Natalia

The school spirit here is awsome!!! I have never met a student that does not care greatly for this school!

Tyler

Appalachian is location in the mountains of the Blue Ridge Mountain range in North Carolina. This location allows students to participate in many outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming in local lakes, snowboarding, camping, etc. Many of our fine art colleges are excellent and produce many workers in those types of fields in North Carolina and in surrounding states. Our football is another reason why many high schoolers are applying the past two years, Appalachain beat Michigan in 2007 and the team has won three consecuative national championships. Fans also love the Marching band at the football games.

Nicole

Appalachian State is a community where people aren't afraid to stop and talk with you or help you with anything you need. Everyone is friendly, the atmosphere is beautiful and laid back, and it is genuinely a great place to be. Whether you like to nature walk, rock climb, or ski, the diverse surroundings allow for outdoorsy and non-outdoorsy people to always have something to do. The programs on campus are great too. If you want to go caving, kayaking, or even just to watch a French Opera, everythingi s affordable. It's a good time at Appalachian.

Joel

John

You don't have to buy books... You can rent them.

Aram

Appalachian has a great atmosphere and just seems so welcoming and interesting. I love being here in this small mountian, college community. I wouldn't want to go to school anywhere else.
