I wish I had known that time management skills are essential to being able to be successful within the classroom settings. As most of the material is covered in class but it is your own duty to be able to grasp that knowledge on your own time. I also wish I had known that there is a smaller variety of courses I can take during a given semester, that way I could've taken other prerequisite classes while still at community college for a much cheaper price.
I wish I had known that it would not be as fun as I thought it would be to play soccer in college and that it would be more worth while to not play and spend my time building relationships instead. Also, that Communications, while fun, is often considered to be a useless major and I should look into something more practical, especially considering the fact that the program here is just getting off the ground and so it is not very extensive. The last thing is to take time to root myself in a purpose to go after.
I wish I would have known that I can plan my own future. Advisors will suggest classes to take but it would be just as easy for me to look into what I wanted to take and push towards my career. Additionally would have been good to know that High school classes are the same as beginning college classes but slower paced, so don't slack off in the beginning classes or it will create some really bad habits for later when things get difficult.
I wish I had known that a degree in education was not necessary to become a teacher. In fact, I desprately wish I had majored in something other than education as I feel it was a quite repetitive waste of my time.
Do not underestimate the importance of taking care of yourself. The freshman fifteen, the six shots of espresso, staying up until 4 a.m. It's all fun and it all effects you. I found myself burnt-out and not liking coffee (the horror!) and I realized the importance of maintaining a healthy diet, plan for excersizing, and a good bed-time. However, before I sound like a boring prude, I also learned the importance of saying no to things in order to have a social life, because that also constitutes taking care of yourself by taking a refreshing break.
The level of commitment that would be expected of me due to my major in music.
