What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If I could go back in time and invite myself out for coffee and a nice chat about my future, I wouldn't hesitate to repeat a quote from Albert Einstein that I had never fully understood until I attended college: "“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” This quote became especially significant to me after struggling with academics throughout my life and wondering why I could never be superior at math or English. One thing I was good at, however, was art. I would tell my past self not to feel worthless because I couldn't pass a chemistry test in fourth block during senior year because (for lack of better terms, as my mother would always say), "Your brain just isn't wired that way." I was a fish that couldn't climb the towering trees of high school but I am a fish that can bravely swim in the deep oceans of creativity and splash colors the world has never seen.

My advice to myself would be start on scholarship searching early. I didn't know the extent that i needed to push myself but now i know and wish i could pass that knowledge on to my past self.

Attending an art school gave me an eye for composition, detail, and craft. I have gone on to use those skills in other fields (web design, furniture making, and cabinetry), where it is often the attention to the details that make the difference.
