Auburn University Top Questions

What are the academics like at your school?

Courtney

Tough but great.

Kate

REALLY high standards with academics. Even in the easiest classes, you will get a run for your money.Class participation is big, but you can also do well if you don't go to class, ONLY if you are very independent and good at teaching yourself. Classes are pretty small minus your big into lecture courses like chemistry and biology. Students are pretty competitive, but friendly. I am a pre med major and it is very difficult here, but it is do able. Professors have office hours, which you can choose to attend or not, but they are all very nice and work with you so you can do well!

Many professors try to learn students names, most work hard at making classes interesting, and assistance outside of class is plentiful. Writing centers, tutors, extensive libraries in 3 locations on campus.& open 24 hrs 6 days a week. In class participation is very common & encouraged & required in some classes. The AUPE classes are in wide variety to include, walking, jogging, bowling, and even belly dancing occasionally. The academic requirements are typical and set a bit higher than some schools, & one of the reasons it is a very prestigious & sought after university.

At Auburn the classes can go as well as you want them to. If you are active in the class and try to make an effort you will succeed. Some of the classes can be rather large but the professor can still get to know you if you try and mingle with them. I feel that in my classes, biomedical sciences, that i am getting a very solid education and that i am learning very well. In my classes i have found a group of other students to be competitive with and make the class more engaging. The classes can be as competitive or noncompetitive as you make them. Here it is all about what you put in.

saketh

you might have already seen some websites for the rankings in each program. Its like one of the best in offering all professional and varied programs.

Alexandria

This depends alot on your major, i have taken some art classes and those professors will take the time to get to know their students. In any class though, if you take the time to go to a professor's office hours or talk to them before or after class they will remember you.

The professors knew my name because I was the only non-white in my grad class. It is the typical football u academics, not that hard and pretty easy if you do the work. I found the business and building construction professors still have a problem with minorities in their classes especially in grad classes. I found about half of them very unprofessional.

Laura

Professors don't seem to know my name, but I'm not one to speak up much, so I may not be the best judge. It does seem as though they're a little more unapproachable than I'd anticipated. If you can get in the honors college, do- the classes are more intellectually stimulating, and the benefits (registration, housing, etc.) are almost unfair. I've never sensed anything remotely like "competition" in the classroom. Grades aren't all that important to a lot of people, and good grades aren't too difficult to attain here.

Blake

Professors are great in my department, Comm and JRNL

Meredith

My senior level professors know my name because the classes are small. I do not like how hard it is to get into PR classes

Mackenzie

I had one class where my professor knew my name in a class of about 240. The rest of my classes I am pretty sure they have no clue. My favorite class was Introduction to Biolgy, even though I didn't even need it. I usually study two days before my test.

Emily

Auburn is very competitive and I am in nursing school which is very hard and time consuming

Tiffany

Classes are simple if you do your work. Make it a point to know your professor and they will know you. An excellent thing about Auburn is that everyone is here to go to school; if someone says they have to study one night, it is respected and the person doesn't feel like a total loser if they don't og out one night. Everyone is here for school and to do well.

Allison

I don't think any professors know my name but I enjoy all of my classes. They are all really interesting.

Melissa

The classes in Auburn, well they are class. You will have those great Professors who care so much, and then those who would rather be somewhere else than in that classroom teaching that lesson again. Favorite class? I would have to say Statistics or Lifespan and Human Development. Worst class? Chemistry with Dr. Death. Its comeptitive even though it might not seem that way but I like that about Auburn. Most unique class I have taken here would have to be the Au Expirence class.

Anne

Education at Auburn is very good and I feel that it prepares you for a job while also making sure you learn something. Students are definitely competitive (some more than others).

Suzanne

I believe that Auburn has a great academic system. having big classes as an underclassman waas sort of hard but as i have gotten into my major classes they are smaller and mroe cmfortable. for the most part i enjoy my major, even though sometimes it can be a little boring and repetitive.

claire

I think that the one thing to complain about regarding Auburn academics is the huge lecture classes that most students have to take. I know that comes from going to a big university, but a lot of the time it feels like even when you go to a teacher's office hours for extra help, etc. they still do not know who you are, and they really do not care how you do in their class.

Abbey

In my smaller classes teachers will know my name, but in my bigger classes they only know my name if I am constantly e-mailing them because I didn't understand something in class. I have really liked all of my English and World Literature classes. They start out as a pain because they all have mandatory attendance and require a lot of work, but the teachers are all really good. I only study right before tests and quizzes because that is what works for me but I know people who study all the time.

Kayla

I feel that Auburn students do put a lot of effort into their academics. However, you always will have those select few who are the over achievers. I definitely can say I'm one of those students who constantly had to study everyday but also manage my extracurricular activities. It was hard, but I think Auburn has great teachers who help you grow academically and teach you to really go outside your normal boundaries. I really have felt challenged to be the best student I can be while attending Auburn and I feel like I'm ready for the real world now.

Paige

I feel that auburn professors try to maintain a closeness with their current students and are easy to stay in touch with. I feel that I do the best in classes that keep my interest and ones that I'm not so interested in I do not do as well. I feel that one of the most unique classes I took was my chemistry lab because it was interesting to see all the different reactions. I felt that this was unique but I enjoy my government classes the most considering that I would like to attend law school one day. I feel that I have been able to keep in touch with professors so hopefully they can write me a rec.

Suzanne

I love the academics but i wish that there was a better way to register for classes. Its such a hassle and you feel like you dont ever get what you want. I think there needs to be more classes at auburn.

Aubrey

Most of my proffesors do not know my name unless it is a small class. My favorite class was sociology. My teachers were two GTAs who were so good at relating the material to subjects that helped us understand! I do have intellectual conversations outside of class..about politics or religion, and numerous other things. My major is psychology; I've only taken one class but I absolutley loved it! I can't wait to take another one! I don't spend much time with my proffeseurs outside of class..some are more approachable than others. So far I feel like the education is mroe learning for learning's sake. I think the academic requirements are attainable but difficult.

Torry

I study pretty often and I go to class on a regular basis. I am a journalism major in the College of Liberal Arts. I do not spend time with professors outside of class.

Kelly

Auburn has a great education program, and is a reason why I came to Auburn.

Rhianna

Some of my professors know my name. My favorite class was my Accounting class. My least favorite is Macroeconomics. Students study different amounts of time. Class participation is very common because if there is none, we will most likely be given a quiz right then! Students are very competitive. Auburn's academic requirements are excellent! The education can be geared towards any way you want to take it- I gear it towards doing well so I can get a good job when I graduate.

Lindsay

I have loved the academics at Auburn and love most of the professors. I do wish I had had a little more guidance from my counselor in my decisions about my major and my classes. I LOVED the women's self defense class.

Sarah

I am in the architecture program and love my classes. My professors definitely know my name and take interest in my learning. Our student advisors are the BEST. They are always extremely helpful and get you into the classes you need to get into. They also listen to your concerns about teachers or classes. I do wish that the architecture school would spend more money on high tech equipment to further our capacity to make our projects the best they can be.

Caroline

favorite class history

Carly

Depending on the size of the class, my professors do know my name. Again, depending on the class, participation is common. Right now, because I'm a freshman, most of my classes are just ordinary and I have to take them to get into my major so none of them are unique or interesting.

Katie

I think Auburn has awesome academics, and I feel like my degree will mean more then if I had a degree from any other school. The only thing that is annoying is they don't offer enough classes, and registring as a freshman, I had to get classes I didn't want to take just because everything was full. Even for core classes that everybody has to take only one or two classes would be available.

Katie

I am majoring in fashion design and all of my professors in that school know my name. However, in other's such has history and chemistry they do not. I do not feel that my major should be required to take two years of chemistry, it is a waste of time.

Anne

In most of my undergrad classes my professors didn't know my name, but now that I'm in classes more of my major, I have a better relationship with teachers. Some classes are really hard to get into, philosophy classes are one of the hardest. There also aren't many class times for classes I have to take so there's no way for me to do my schedule so I could also have a job. Some of my professors are very helpful, but most are not, even though theys say thats what their jobs are. Academic requirements are rising, but still seen as a lower school. And education isn't really geared toward anything, I barely feel like I'm learning things in my classes. In one of them I do so much busy work it seems pointless.

Blake

My favorite classes are the fashion classes!

Katie

favorite so far was global consumer culture and also my favorite teacher. she was young so it was easy to relate to her and she related to the class well. its frustrating having a teacher that does not understand that we are grown up college students and for the most part we are mature. i think auburn's academic requirements are set appropriately and could even been risen slightly. currently i am in apparel merchandising with a minor in business and while the business classes are tough i feel so far they have given me a good idea of what the busines world is all about.

Kara

academics are decent, some to easy, some to hard.

Katie

I have a mixture between big classes where my teachers dont know my name and smaller classes where they do which i really like. Usually these bigger classes dont take role which is always nice. The smaller classes usually require a lot of teacher-student interaction which is usually why classes are like that.

Andy

love professors and classes... hard to get COMM classes but once youre in them theyre great..

Melanie

Much harder than everyone says and classes only get harder the further you get!

Riley

My Biology professor has over 200 students in our class and he knows everyone by name. Good experiences so far.

Sarah

Academics have been been great so far. Every teacher i have had has been eager and more than willing to help if i have ever had a problem with the specific subject.

Leslie

The academics at Auburn are great, but just like any school you have your good and bad teachers. My least favorite class is Human Odyssey. This is a class that is offered as a substitute for World History and is supposed to be easier. This course includes two meetings in the classroom and then a lab where you will listen to a speaker or watch a movie. The issue in this class is the fact that its opinionated and the teachers do not know what their talking about. So when you have a test and you write an essay on a topic and how you perceive it and it is not how the professor sees it than you get no credit. Auburn's education is both geared for getting a job and learning for its own sake. For instance, before you even get into your major classes one has to complete so many credit hours. These classes are just your basic core class and to be honest I think they are pointless, but to have three science requirements that have nothing to do with your major is pointless. I think that Auburn needs to arrange their core classes where they are useful to a students major.

Amy

The library is always packed at night during the week. Around finals time is the worst because its so hard to find a good place to study and the internet is slow because so many people are trying to use it at once. I really like my Chemistry lab because the experiments are interesting and physically doing them helps me to understand the concepts. I am a Pre-Med major so the classes are not easy. I see my professors outside of class sometimes if i have questions about something i dont understand or to ask them to edit an essay.

kathryn

the good professors know your name...i think that auburn changes the required classes to graduate in the college of busisness too much

Ashley

Academics are good... Math teachers stink

Emily

PRETTY HARD!

Courtney

Auburn is known for their incredible academics and excellent professors. However, a lot of professors do not know my name unfortunately, but that is my fault. My major is Exercise Science, and I would love to go to Physical Therapy school. I don't have one favorite class or least favorite yet. Students here at Auburn do study a lot and are very competitive. They want you to become something after college and make Auburn proud. Learning is the main goal.

Sarah

I have taken many classes here, large and small, and they have all had at least one good aspect about them. Although Auburn has many students, I know many, many professors who know students by name and are quick to ask them about personal aspects of their lives. The vast majority of professors here really do seem to care about students and enjoy teaching. All of the professors I have had have welcomed me into their offices and provided academic help whenever needed. Some of the favorite classes I have taken have been World History, Reproductive Physiology, and other classes within my major (Animal Sciences -PreVet). My least favorite classes have been Art History and Organic Chemistry. Being a student within the College of Agriculture has allowed me to be in close contact with knowledgable professors who are hard working and truly care about their students and want to get to know them personally.
