Babson College Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Amy

Students here are really diverse. You'll become friends with people from all over the globe, and it's really refreshing. You learn to view business from many perspectives. In the classroom, students here can be cutthroat, and the atmosphere is very high-success and high-pressure. But outside of the classroom, Babson students are very easy to communicate with, and it's easy to make friends.

Allie

Students at Babson are extremely diverse, geographically as well as through their career goals and personal interests. Business and an appreciation for entrepreneurship is a common thread that all students seem to share and thrive upon. Most students are very ambitious and love to get involved, both in and out of the classroom.

Personally, I hate college brochures and everything in them because like a business, schools will try to reel you in with the prettiest HD pictures with everyone sitting on the grass having the time of their life. Then you see all the SAT words inside the brochure and all that stuff. With that, even though it must have been said a billion times in brochures, Babson is a diverse school. Babson is diverse in the sense that a nice chunk of the u-grad population is international (20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}). As far as race goes with the American population, it can see more improvement. I do give Babson credit though for really stepping it up by admitting more African-American (like myself) and Latino-American people into the school. I hope that maybe more Indian or Native American people will apply to the school because I would like to see more of those faces. All in all I never felt excluded because of my race and who I am as a person (heck, I never felt excluded haha). Again, like I said before, if you are a mute/ complete introvert then Babson is NOT the school for you. For one thing, class participation is a HUGE aspect of your grades and if you don't know how to make yourself present to professors your grades will suffer. In terms of social life, people won't intentionally knock you out because the people are really nice here, but no one is always going to chase you down to do stuff. If you are two-faced this is NOT the school for you just because most of the people here are really blunt ( blunt but nice haha) and don't cut corners with stuff. Next is fashion. This one is interesting because even though Babson is a business school you do have to stay savy and dress well. Just a little side note for potential students, you have to dress down in business attire for your classes sometimes. I guess since people have to dress up, people learn to care more about their appearance here. From the times I went I do not recall seeing anyone walking around in sweats or just really casual period. You don't have to be a supermodel, just be presentable. Last point, some people come here for the sole purpose of making money in the future. So despite their love for the school, you will hear some people say "I want to make $1,000,000 at Chase Bank" (idk something like that). It's something you can brush off though. Overall, I think Babson people are pretty awesome because they are serious achievers, yet they are laid back and don't rub their success in your face like an Ivy League student (and trust, I've really seen Babson people succeed more than students from Ivy Leagues simply because there is a lot more dimension to them then "I went to Harvard"). Not knocking the Ivy's down because I admire what they do and a lot of my friends go to their institutions. The motto here is "Work hard, party harder."

Students at Babson tend to be very driven and hardworking, but we are generally very business minded individuals. Most students wear casual clothes to class (jeans and sweats are common) with some students opting to wear business casual, often due to jobs on and off campus. Our student body is involved in a number of activities and groups (more than 95 in total on campus) including athletics, Greek life, theater, the Babson Dance Ensemble, racial and cultural groups, religious groups, LGBT groups, and a number of others. We have an incredibly diverse student population with roughly 25{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of our student body coming from outside of the U.S. and with most students coming from outside of the New England area.

Keith

If I walked into trim dining hall I would see a wide variety of people eating. The first table that I looked at would be a group of kids sitting at one of our long cafeteria style tables that fit about 20 students. The students sitting there have just come from sports practice and our enjoying a meal together as a team. Everyone is wearing sweat pants or shorts with an extremely sweaty t-shirt They are all girls, but you can tell each one comes from a different background and none of them look the same. The next table I would see would be a similar style table, but instead it is filled with kids from one of the frats on campus. Frats/Soriorities typically have manadatory dinners together on Mondays night. The table would be decorated with table clothes and all of them are dressed up for the dinner. The third table would actually be one of the booths by the windows that fits four/five students. At this table, you would see a completely random mix of four students. There are two juniors sitting there with a freshmen and sophomore. One student comes from Mass, another from India, another from Cali, and the last is from China. They are all talking about what happened during the day and any lastest gossip. The last table that you would see would be a group of professors, staff, and students all enjoying lunch together. The Dean might be eating there, the office of campus life staff, your finance teacher, you and your friends. You are all talking about different events in your life and joking around. It isn't very formal and no one looks nervous. The last thing that you would see is everyone walking around going up to the different tables to say hello, because everyone knows each other. You might see girls from the sports team get up to say hi to the professors, or the kids in the frat going over and sitting with the kids in the booths. Typically, students don't stay at the same table for long and will move around, or they will try to sit at the longer tables where everyone can sit together.

Babson is one of the most diverse campus I have ever been to. There is a place for everyone on campus. And because it is just at the right size, you can feel confortable, and be yourself.

Toby

Babson is so diverse you will literally meet people from all over the world. You'll always have someplace to stay no matter where you are in the world!

alison

The Student body: yes its pretty much rich white males...with internationals thrown in the mix. However, almost anyone can fit in here. (PS. Babson IS NOT ALL GIRLS. everyone thinks we are...for some reason people think that and I'll never understand why. We used to be all Male til the 70's) Most Babson Students are from CT...(and thats a statistic I believe) but really, they're from ALL OVER the US and plenty from Asia. Obviously students come from wealthy financial backgrounds since our school is 48K a year. Course, there is Financial aid, and so don't assume that you can't afford babson.

Jess

People are generally nice to each other. We have groups based on race. Black, Indian, Asian, Latino, White. There are definitely distinct groups, but each group I feel genuinely respects each other. Everyone tends to know everyone else. If you see someone you don't recognize chances are they don't go to Babson. We're a small school, so we just see the same people more, but we also do so many group projects that you end up working with a lot of different people and you never want to be anyones enemy because they could end up in your next group. I think we have distinct groups, but everyone has friends in each group so it feels connected.

Jesse

Mostly American students, but a large population from Latin American nations and the Middle East.

Walter

Racial minorities: Not many. But everyone gets along great! Out of place: computer science types. There's a lot of talking and BSing going around (after all, this is a business college) so it may prove to be a challenge if you're introvertically inclined, at first (as I was). But there's still a lot of quiet types, and you shouldn't ever wind up feeling lonely or out of place. 4 tables? 1. The jocks - always wearing their sweatpants and backwards hats, just in case 2. The frat boys (and sorority chicks) - wild, spontaneous, always drunk/buzzed, outrageous clothes, and you want to run them over with a car. Varies greatly (some are cool, some are...not) depending on the frat/sorority - 3. The quiet kids - not really quiet, they certainly talk to each other, it's just that they're completely overshadowed by the boisterousness of the first two groups. 4. BISO- Babson International Student Organization. 25-35{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of your class. Smart, good-looking, rich beyond belief, and always speaking in a langauge that isn't English in small groups in front of the library and smoking fancy cigarettes.

John

Babson is generally split into three different cliques: the athletes, the B.I.S.O.'s (Babson International Student Organization) and people in Greek life. This is mainly because the best places to party are in the athletic suites (where most athletes go), the clubs in Boston (where most international students go), and in the fraternities (where most people with drinking problems go). Recently there has been much more of an overlap between fraternities and athletic teams than there has in the past but the International students don't mingle much with the other groups as they tend to move off campus after their first year. The student body seems very diverse because of all the international students but is really mostly made up of suburban students from the New England area. Despite the many different backgrounds at Babson though, eveyone seems to get along very well with each other.

Ryan

there is a lot of diversity on campus...which is a good thing...the only students that would feel out of place at babson are democrats (like myself)...liberal arts people...and those who have a working conscience and won't screw someone else over for money (like myself)... many different students interact...although fraternities/sororities are formed of nearly identical people....plus clubs like christian fellowship...italian club...black student union...bapsa etc are alligning people of similar backgrounds to be honest a lot of international kids keep to themselves...but that's because we americans (especially the spoiled rich ones at babson) might not be too welcoming... i guess the 4 tables would be 1. frats/sororities 2. sports teams 3. groups of friends/roomates 4. kids sitting by themselves most babson students are from rich environments...some poorer kids receive scholarship money...but most kids are well off....and let you know it...most of babsons students are holier than thou republicans....so far right that it's wrong...most of them don't even know politics and have no position talking/debating politics (i've given up arguing with the republicans at babson) and yes...students talk about how much they think they'll earn in the future...

Jerry

-haven't really come across people who are very religious (though there are student groups on campus like hillel for the jewish students) -there are many people who've been living in a bubble in suburbia for all their lives so when they come to babson it's their first experience getting to live/study with other people that are different from them. some of these people can be very open minded while others are not so. it just depends on who you come across -there are students who are LGBT but not many (and if there are people on campus most likely don't know about it). it's not that it's looked down upon but there are many students, who again, are not very open minded so there are many stereotypes -a very punk, goth person would feel out of place, many who are openly 'out there' -if there are 4 tables of students in the dining hall, they would be: one for the jocks/athletes and the girls who get passed around by all of them, the kids who do theatre and are always in the plays and musicals, the 'ghetto' kids, and the kids who are quieter more on the loser side. -there are a lot of students from ny, ma, many from different states across the country, different countries, large portions of indian students, and some asian, mostly white students -most financial backgrounds are VERY wealthy, upper class , middle class, very few are lower class (emphasis on very few) -students are politically aware, some are active, alot are into business news (finance) -students DEFINATELY talk about how much they'll earn one day. it is pretty much the only reason why they are currently at babson

Samantha

Babson has a fairly diverse student body. There is a large international population, which I did not realize until I arrived at freshman orientation. It is not out of the ordinary to see students walking to class in business attire. Most of the students at Babson, from the U.S. or international, have a lot of money. It is very obvious who is at Babson with a scholarship group and who has had a personal college fund since before they were born.

Madison

The students are pretty competitive, and many are borderline alcoholics. A significant amount have no sense of reality because they grew up in very wealthy, sheltered families. However, as in any place you can find a group of friends that you connect with. Very few people are outright mean or nasty, it's just a matter of having something in common with them.

Tristan

If you are sensitive about racial jokes, please don't come to Babson. The administration tries to push against it but it only fosters it more. The stdents will make every racial joke known to man. The difference though is it is difficult and other racism besides that. The students here see evryone pretty much equal across the board. I think that Babson is comprised of 45{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} international students has something to do with it. And the racial jokes are only told to the people that they make fun. There is little behind the back talk when it comes to that. You will find the racial students separate into different groups though. Indians will be with indians, asians with asians, and all across the board. There are no cliques and the students don't refuse to be with other racial groups, its just the way the student body is formed.

John

I come from San Diego, California and believe there's a more popular Northeastern (and especially business) belief that often tomorrow will be better than today due to things like a snow storm or the simple fact that you aren't rich right now. I prefer the California mentality of every day is awesome! I'd say at very least 35{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the students grew up somewhere within 4 hours of the school and can relate to each other more so than outsiders though this disparity will diminish as more students have sent more time in the area. I like the international diversity, approx 18{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body, and if you really get to know these people you can learn a lot about different cultures. The majority of students will become clicky however.

Nicole

Babson student body is united. Most students dress nice to class. I wear sweatpants, it really doesn't matter. We are all here for one reason, to better ourselves and get an iducation. Everyone interacts with one another. Babson is mostly group work. One table in the dinning hall has the athletes, one has the greeks, one has the freshman and the other a mix of people. Most students are from new england area I'd say, and are wealthy. Students are VERY politically aware and active. Students do talk about how much they will earn and I personally hope to be a millionare by the age of 23.

Rafael

A lot of people stick together by race. Asians with asians, indians with indians etc. But its not because they don't like other people but only because they can relate to them. They have tons of other friends from all over the world. Its just the main group they hang out with is usually the same race as they are. A lot of people are wealthy but they are modest and humble so you wouldnt know.

KJ

Babson students are a mix of all backgrounds. A decent amount of students are from the East coast and come from middle to high class families. Another large group are the BISOs (international kids who are ridiculously rich and own nice cars and smoke a lot and wear huge sunglasses). Athletes are a big clique at Babson because so many people are involved in sports and the Beaver Nation has created a strong fan base for those sports. There are so many different groups but the groups all mix so much that it isn't an issue. Also a lot of people are involved in 3 or more groups which unites all the cliques.

Torry

It is too small, with too many men. everyone knows each other and is completely segregated. the women on campus are not worth dating, go to BU for that.

Taylor

Babson is a very diverse place. I was fortunate enough to go to boarding school before coming here but it still was a huge culture shock because of how many countries are represented here at babson. I do not have a hard time at all because I am very open to experiencing different things. The only bad part is that because it is diverse it is usually very cliquy.

Melissa

-very international -a lot of students get dressed up for class -internationals and americans are friendly -a lot of students come from well-off families -students are politically aware -yes students all want a least 6 figures after leaving here

Charlie

Babson tries to be very diverse. If there is an organization that a student wants to start, they are more than welcome to. Students wear a variety of apparals in class. It is up to you to dress how you want to. Dining can be a bit tight because most students do have small groups since Babson is small. There are a variety of financial background among students. Some students come from very afluent backgrounds while others are on scholarship. It really doesn't have a big impact because normally people wouldn't talk about their finances.

Sarah

The students at Babson are very job conscious, and are always focused on doing well so that they can get a good internship and job after college.

Cameron

Babson loves Diversity, we have a lot of foreign students including me..I love being i Babson, people appreciate you for what you are, your unique talent is appreciated..you get a lot of opportunities to show your talent and be a part of student run organizations.

Lauren

The Babson student body is extremely diverse. There are people here from all over the United States as well as hundreds of foreign countries. Students here tend to be somewhat wealthy and preppy, but not everyone. You will see the sports teams hanging out with their teammates, sororities with their sisters, frats with their brothes, different clubs hanging out with members, but you will also see everyone interacting. I am on the cheerleading team and in the sorority Chi Omega, but I have made friends with every sports team and people in all of the different sororities and fraternities. Also, you see students from every year hanging out together. As a freshman, I have several friends who are seniors which is something you do not see at a lot of big schools. The sense of community is unreal here. Everyone knows everyone and generally acts very friendly.

Laura

the average babson student is from the new england area, comes from a private school - lots of boarding schools, has a lot of money - a friend with a trust fund is common. drives an iller car than any professor, and maybe your dad. conservatives are in the majority. how much you make when you graduate is a topic of class and lunchtime conversation. people get uuber dressed up for class - if you're not in designer duds you're in the minority. there is not a whole lot of diversity. babson works to bring in many different kinds of people, but the fact that this is a business specific school there is only so much that can be done.

Rory

A lot of international students and about 25 different languages spoken as you go into the library. All of the international kids drive fancy cars and live off campus and smoke. There is not much diversity in respect to how people dress or act. if you are from california it may take a while to adjust to the "uptightedness" of the Babson student. Most students do not wear sweats like most colleges. A lot of students come dressed nicely or business casual except the sports teams. Most ethnic groups tend to clique together and are always in groups ther is not much interactions socially between the different ethnicities. only for group projects. The pakistanis and indians are big rivals with the cricket matches but it is all friendly, and they are the most fun on campus to have around. Most students are from the new england area (mass, CT) Politics are not a big thing here at babson, but most i presume are conservative but there is not much action going on in regards to politics.

Joseph

There is not a ton of socio-economic diversity on campus. The campus is fairly diverse with its politcal beliefs. Our strongest asset is our large international population (almost 20{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c}).

Stephanie

The Babson student body is extremely diverse. There is a large amount of international students which provides a great atmosphere as well as opportunities to learn and experience other cultures.
