It tends to be stressful and pressured. Courses at both Columbia and Barnard require a great deal of preparation and work.
There's so much to do that you can easily feel overwhelmed. In addition, sometimes it can get lonely being in New York City. It's just a part of living there.
The inflexibility of faculty to think outside the box in terms of students studying abroad. Barnard does not approve of domestic study leaves although they do approve of studying abroad. They don't look at programs on a case-by-case basis, but umbrella all domestic programs (in the US) as being not as good as Barnard, and not as culturally informative as any abroad program.
