What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

If i could go back and talk to myself as a high school senior there are three things that i would want to tell myself; i would tell myself to never give up, stay focus, and most of all hang around the right group of people. as a high school senior i gave up on a plethora of oppurtunities that would have helped me further myself and grow but now I have learned to never give up on your dreams and goals and to never let anyone stop you from doing what you love to do. Another thing that i would tell myself is to stay focus; while in college being focus was the number one thing for me because college has alot of distractions. Most of all hanging out with the right people is a must while in college because college can either make you or break you and I choose to be someone who makes a difference in this world.

The only advice I could give to myself is, know you are going to come across many bumps in the road and obstacles to over come but these obstacles will only fuel your passion to succeed. College is not just about getting a degree and going to classes every day, it is about building yourself as a person. Being in college makes you think about things in a different way, it forces you to go outside your comfort zone and you become more mature as an adult. A college degree shows potential employers that you are ready to do whatever is necessary to be the best you can possibly be and you are ready to tackel any challenges given to you. The biggest lesson I learned is sometimes you need to take time off after high school, work dead end jobs to realize how important college and a degree are. Had I not worked dead end jobs I would not have a college GPA of 3.73 because I would have not known the true meaning of what a college degree is and what it is worth.

If I could go back in time to senior year, there are many important things I would tell myself. First and foremost, I would tell myself to stick with my insincts. I was between 2 schools, one that had name value, and UNC, a school that had offered me money and the best music education program in the state. I was wary to go to a school that didn't have a lot of name value, but ultimately UNC was a fantastic decision and I am very glad I made it. Also, I would tell myself to ignore decisions of others. Choosing a college is very important, and it is a completely personal decision to make. Factoring in the decisions of others could have led to my demise and picking a school that wasn't correct for my needs. However, if I could speak to my younger self, the most important thing to mention would be: do not be afraid of losing yourself. I would remind myself that I am already a strong, confident, established person, and college will ultimately not be as scary as I thought it would be. Overall, I am happy with the decision I made.

jaqari

If I can go back to the in time and talk to myself as a high school senior. I would tell myself, " Yo Jaqari what are you doing. You need to get your grades up, study and stop kidding around." Im telling you this because when you get to college you are going to have lots of assignments and tests. Missing class is not going to do you any good because everytime you miss a class you miss out on a class lesson and that leaves you behind the whole class. I know you are a hard worker and you have good memory and most of the time you don't have to study but in college you have to study because it is so many topics and points that you have to explain in the lesson. Please study hard and stop being lazy. Good luck!

THE ADVICE I WOULD GIVE MYSELF AS A HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR WOULD BE THAT I SHOULD OF TOOK HEED TO THE INFORMATION THAT MY HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS WAS TELLING ME ABOUT COLLEGE.I WOULD OF TRIED TO GAINED MORE SOCIAL SKILLS AND PULIC SPEAKING, BECOMINGE MORE OF A PEOPLES PERSON. I WOULD OF BEEN MORE INVOLVE IN AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITES SO THAT I COULD OF GAINED MORE STUDY HABITS BECAUSE STUDYING FOR COLLEG EXAMS AND TEST ARE A LITTLE MORE COMPLICATED.I BELIVE THAT AS A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT I SHOULD OF LEARNED MORE ABOUT MY MAJOR AND MY FIELD OF STUDY BEFORE I CAME TO COLLEGE. ALSO IN HIGH SCHOOL I WORKED THE MAJORITY OF THE TIME AND IF I COULD GO BACK I WOULD OF LEARNED HOW TO MANAGE AND BUDGET MY MONEY IN A BETTER FASHION. MY REASON FOR SAYING THIS IS BECAUSE AS A HIGH SHOOL STUDENT YOU HAVE MORE FREE TIME ON YOUR HANDS OPPOSED TO BEING A COLLEGE STUDENTS ALL YOUR EXTRA TIME YOU SHOULD BE SATUDYING AND WHEN YOU GO IN A S A FRESHMAN YOU HAVE TO GET ADAPTED TO THE COLLEGE LIFE AND STAY UP ON YOUR CLASSWORK AND STUDY HABITS.

Angelo

Angelo, you are about to begin life in the real world. There are different ways in which you can prepare yourself, but there is only one way that fits you best. You have the choice of listening to others, seeking guidance from your school, or you can make you own decision; you choose the verdict. Here are some tips of being successful in college: be prompt, be respectful, listen, keep in touch with you counselor, keep you home (area in which you live) organized, ask your professor questions, and always make the best of choosing your peers. This is your chance to experience the real world and you have to make the best of it; failure is not an option. You have many people depending on you. You community needs your assistance mentally and physically. Angelo, you will be whatever you mold yourself into now. You can do it!

Assuming that I could go back to my high school in time and talk to my self, and knowing what I know now about college life, I would tell my self to stay focus on my work. Dont worry about just trying to get out of high school but to set a goal and try to accomplish it. I would tell my self that I need to be aware that I need to set a high standard for my SAT and ACT. I need to work on getting my grades up. Do not settle for a C, just because it is a passing grade and that it will get me by. Also I will tell my self that I need to fill as many scholarships as possible. Also I will tell my self to study more. Its never enough to know more.

Are'Yanna

I would tell myself to score high on all ACT and SAT tests; and instead of playin around my freshman year in high school I would have got straight A's because that is my capability and I would have graduated at the top of my class.

Marquese

I would tell myself that being a college student is a serious job. Your gonna have to pay alot of money to go to school so you can't give anything but your all in every class, I know you can do it!

Shavonne

If I was able to go back in time to high school i would tell myself to focus and work harder. I also would have told myself to maintain a GPA of 3.0 and higher. If i had a higher GPA, i would have been elgible for academic scholarships that probably would have paid off my whole four years of college. Secondly, i would have told myself to aim for a college that is not as expensive. Also, I would have told myself to prepared myself for the real world. Unexpectedly, i am more so independent. Financially, I am all on my own here at Benedict College. In conclusion, I 'd tell myself not to let my emotions get the best of me so frequently. It hurts to try to move foward only to feel like im getting push back a few steps. I know that my past is is not something i can just go back to and relive. I appreciate my past mistakes . Genuwinely, I learned from them. I am a better person because of them. As of now, I would continue to tell myself, "No matter what, reach for the stars....even if it seems impossible."

If I could talk the my high school self, first I would tell her that college is the best time of her life, but it is something she will have to take it seriously. She might have been able to get away with procrastinating during high school, but that is not going to cut it when you later on. She is going to have to work hard and attend all her class everyday because the difference between going to class now and going to class in college is one has the choice on whether or not to go to class. I would tell her that all because you made A?s before does not mean you will now. You are going to struggle and it?s going to be hard; that you will fail. But that is when you have to stop and wonder exactly why you wanted to attend college in the first place. I would tell her that she is going to realize that this is about her and that she has to step up her game if she wants to achieve her dream because no one else can do it for her, only she can.

Jeneece

I would tell myself that going away to college helped me much more than being at home. Being at home and going to school was too much work for me and I had too many outside school issues interfering with my academics but now that I live on campus and away from home my grades are improving and I'm learning how to prioritize school, work, play and finances.

When I was in high school, I was a good student. I had high honors awards and was at the top of my class. But towards the end of my senior year I began to get relaxed and blew alot of things off, and was in danger of losing my scholarship to school. If I had the chance to o back in time and talk to myself as a high school student, I would tell myself that everything I do in high school is goin to affect me in college. I would tell myself to stay focused and not fall into any tempations such as; females, friends, and becoming too relaxed in my school work. I would tell myself that even though things may be coming to an end, stay strong and finish everything out. I would improve my attitude and not be so arrigant towards my work in thinking that i knew everything that was going on. I would also tell myself not to blow things off until the last minute. My main problem in high school was that I became too arrigant with my intellegence and it caused me alot of problems that took a while to fix.

I would prepare myself while I am in high school for the college life. I would tell myself that when you attend college on-campus you are an independent student and are basically on your own in the world. I would tell myself not to get caught up in the many off campus activities that are going on in this world today. I would tell myself to study hard and be committed to being an obedient, proactive and independent student due to when you are in college you have yourself to depend on. I would also tell myself to try to find a mentor while I am in high school that could lead me on a path of achievement when I do attend a college. I would prepare myself academically, sociably and spiritually for the experience yet to come.

Kyle

If I could go back to high school I would tell myself to stay focused on more than just graduating. Although graduating is important education does not stop after high school,it continues on to college. So I would of told myself to start applying for scholarships because it causes less stress on you and your family about your finances. Also if I could go back and tell myself to get involved with my community a lot more to add it on my resume' because it looks really good to boards of admission of the different colleges you apply to. Finally if I could go back to myself as a high school senior, I would have told myself to take as many college coarses as a senior as I could because it creates less credits you have to take as a college student.

Shaylyn

Pay more attention and really know what you want to major and stick to a plan. I mean still have fun but be focus!

Dorian

I would tell the younger me to date more in college. Keep your standards and values high. And get Julius (the finest guy on campus) to fall deeply into love with you. Dont be afraid to stand out and stand up for your causes. Be friendly and more social. Your first year is all about you, not the neighborhood, the church, of the family. YOU- and your happiness comes first. I know you won't do anything I wouldn't do. Be good and be happy.

Parents don't choose your child or children college let them make there own choice it is there life to live not yours. Students choose your school wisely and know what you want to do in life and make sure that the school that you choose have your major.

Aleah

When searching for a good institution you should search for a school that one, will not bring a weakness to your studies. You must know yourself to a degree, because is a learning environment not only in the classroom but with self, and must be able to function in the classroom as well as balance your social life. As well as know if your able to handle the large classroom setting or a more one on one personal setting with your professor. Your selection should also be geared for your major a school that well encourage post graduation employment, internships ,etc.

Jessica

The best advice I would give to parents and/or students about finding the right college is to keep your options open. Don't just go for the college that gives you a full-scholarship, go for the school that you think you will fit better in. I would definately encourage you visit the colleges before applying.

Dana

I would just say make sure you do your research on the school he/she chooses to go to, and make sure to visit the campus to make sure the school is right for your child and the student likes their choice also.

My best advice to parents and students about finding the right college would to be to take your time. I would suggest that students make a list of exactly what they are looking for in a college(population, sports, academics, clubs, tutoring services, career programs). Once they have made their list they should start looking into different colleges. I would suggest that they try to look at as many as they can. Students should start looking as early as sophmore year of high school, so they can assure that they will enough time to explore different colleges. Parents should also pay close attention to the amount of tution at each school, to assure that their child is recieving the best deal for the price. Making the most of the college experience means to enjoy each and every year of college. So if you like the beach look for a school in sunny florida. If you are one who loves the cold look in chilly New Jersey. Most of all find areas where you will feel comfortable. Look for schools with lots of people or find one with a smaller population. Remember these are the most enjoyable years. Good Luck

College is a huge experience in one's life; therefore, it should be of ones desirable choice. When an individual [both students and parents] search for a college, they must make it their duty to grasp a full understanding of what that college has to offer. Keep in mind that a college that may be suitable for someone elses character, may not be suitable for your own. Individuals must keep in mind that during their stay at any particular college they will need to beable to learn and live comfortably. With this said, students and parents should answer some very valuable questions while searching for the right college. I would recommend students to look for a college that not only offers a degree in their targeted field, but courses in their ?dream? career. In addition, I would recommend students to Look for a college where the professors can teach you integrity by their actions as well as the skills you will need for your career, most important, look for a campus that has both a positive and encourageing environment. The college you choose will lead you to success !

Brandon

Apply for college your junior year in high and make sure that the student know what he/she wants to major in. Also make sure they apply for scholarships while still in high school.

kristina

when trying to find the right college I would consider that you always do your research on the campus life and the school its self ypou don't want to get locked in to some place where you wont be happy

Whitney

Learn how to manage your time wisely while you're in school.

The advice that I would give parents first is please, please, please prepare your child by telling them the perks of not having them around, being responsible on their own, and making the right choices. Their is always a possibility that your child might make a mistake or be push because of peer pressure on doing something out of their character but on preparing them will give them least pressures on campus life. Another advice would be on finding the right college and making the most of the college experience is looking into the distance of the school and what that college could offer your child. You would want the best for your child and want your child to have the best college years he/she will have. For the students that is finding the right college make sure you visit the college/university first don't go by how the brochure might look go look for yourself. Also be sure to choose a college area you will be comfortable in and know your way around it. College will be the best years of your life on peparing you for the real world. Make the right choice.

Jasmine

I believe that a student should go to a college that fits there personal needs along with there wants. For instance dont just got to a college because all of your friends are going there and don't just go to one because you hear that they have the best parties. You should got to a college that will help you better yourself in the future, by providing you with help to persue your dreams and not everyone else dreams. Also when choosing a college don't choose ones that you hear the most about with the most things going on if you are looking for a smaller student professor ratio. Yes they are good schools but if your not ready for a larger class room setting those schools want be best for you. Finally the key to finding the perfect college for you is to do research.

TifanyBell

i would say to let the student pick the college because the student would feel that the parent would focus more on the aspects of the college instead of the learning environment of the students decision. Slos i would say that college is very important and that some parents should enjoy the thought of the student trying to go somewhere is life and not doing anything harmful to anyone or anywhere. I would also say that college is a key to excellence and should be pursued.

Lamar

Start the hunt for the right college money. The college that offers the most money isn't always the best college. Make sure you visit the campus and take tours and get to know as much about the school before enrolling.

Joshua

I would tell parents and/or students that when picking a college make sure the college is for them. As well as academics and how the college life is. Also how the faculty ratio is to students and that college is big difference than high school. For students I would also tell them that don't just pick a school because most of your friends are going there but choose wisely about what school you choose because they have to go to that institution and not there friends or there parents.

mitchell

I would tell a parent are a student to spend a day on campus walk around too class and take notes off your likes and disslikes.

ANTHONY

i think u should always select at least three colleges of your choice, u should visit try to all three but definitely the one u select as your first preference, to see the living conditions, check out security and eating conditions also go to the financial aid office and definitely find out about your financial aid situation. Ask about your classes, whats expected of you as far as how many credits your first semister. Find out if your are eligible for any scholarships. And any work study programs they may have. If your parents can pay for your college titution with their eyes close then just pick the school of your choice that offers your major and go for it. but if your like me you look for a school that will back you academically and financially and stick nose to the grind stone and work hard at it.
