Benedictine University Top Questions

What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Qamreen

Benedictine University is a small school which I prefer over the big school I went to for the first 2 years of my college years. I am glad I made the transfer because I have been able to interact with the faculty members and the students much more than I did in my big school. Everyone is always looking out for each other and are willing to help others out if needed. I value my college experience because there are places in the world where people can't even imagine of going to a college and pursing something they desire. I value the fact that I have the opportunity to be able to go to college and educate myself and become a well rounded person which will not only be educated in their field of study but also will be knowledgable in things surrounding our everyday life.

Not only was I fortunate enough to have a community college located just a few miles away from my home, but I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to be concurrently enrolled at that college during my high school years. I was able to escape the riffraff of high school gossip and drama and surround myself with other individuals as driven and serious in their studies as myself. These students were not slackers or drop-outs, but committed young people striving to make a difference in their own lives, and ultimately, in the lives of others. As a recent high school graduate, I now plan to continue my studies at Victor Valley College until I have decided on my major and am ready to transfer to a university. I am confident that my years at this school have allowed me to grow socially, mentally, and intellectually, and have successfully prepped me for life.

What I have gotten out of my college experience could be described as no more than priceless. Throughout my highschool years, I've often thought about what college would be like. Getting past (and now understanding) the application, registration, Financial aid, and scholarship applications and starting my first term was 10x better than I ever thought. I have a more mature peer group, I choose what days I'd prefer to have classes on, and my teachers were for the most part reliable, and fun to learn from. Meeting new people and making new friends only boosted my first time college experience! I'm studying to get my associates, so I can become a flight attendent to travel the globe. Education is truly the gateway to the world!

For me, college is where I have learned so much about myself. The real world really hit me, coming from a very small high school where you know every single person and going to college where you only know a handful of people,if that, is difficult. For the first time I felt lonely and it was hard but it's okay because that is part of life and it only helped me to grow stronger and break out my shell. I am a very quiet and reserved person with most people but going to college has helped me with that a lot because you have to make small talk with a lot of people, participate, and ask questions. You go to college to be edcated, to discover and learn more but in the process you discover yourself and you learn so much more about yourself and that is very valuable. I have only been through one year of college so I can only anticipate what will happen in the next three years.

Out of my college experience I have learned what it means to truely be on your own and what its like to be in the real world. I find it valuable to attend collge because thats exactly what you need to learn. It important to be independent because your own. You won't have parents their to baby you all day and to make sure you do your work. Its survival of the fittest out it in the real world. Its your job to survive in it by doing your work and to keep on working hard. All that hard work will pay off in the future. Thats why I find this information very valuable to me in college.

So far in my college experience I have had many valuable experiences. From meeting wonderful teachers to taking classes that expanded my way of thinking. Outside of the expected learning that happens in college I have also had some on the most phenomenal experiences possible. I joined our campus’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter, and became the VP of Publicity that year. This has taught me great life skills, including how to deal with conflict, chaos, scheduling and event planning. This year I am the VP of Finance and get to see what this new roll teaches me! Phi Theta Kappa introduced me to student government which has been a wonderful experience. I volunteered for the school year and got to learn a lot more about how my college works. This taught me all about student programs and opportunities. I ran for ASCBC President and received the position. Since becoming student body president I have had the chance to learn how our college works and what I can do for students. It’s been a wonderful experience to promote change and help students. The most valuable thing I have learned is to look for opportunities to excel and learn!

From what I have heard from friends, is that college is fun, but expensive. I am well aware that books are expensive, housing, etc. Luckily for me, my college is thirty minutes away, and my parents still provide for me. I am close to be 18, in less than two weeks, and I am beginning to realize what it is going to take to get an education. It excites me, rather than discourages me. I am excited to go through school differently than what I have been used to, being that high school was the same for four years. I can say that I am a little nervous, being that I will be in a different environment. When I went to register for my classes, I felt a little intimidated, because there were people who had already been through the process. I only hope I can adjust, even though it is a small college. It is valuable to attend to college, because I know some people don't get the chance to, and it makes it harder to get a well-paying job. It's important to get an education, which is why I am grateful to attend.

College life is an important part in anybody's life.Memories with friends and professors are inevitable part of the college. But most importantly how we become or what we learn in college plays a significant role towards building our career. My college experience has indeed been very different and outstanding. Growing up in a different country and coming to the United States as an immigrant family was already a newer experience for me. Moreover, English becoming my second language I was one of those quiet students in the class. However, my experience of meeting new people from different background made me see a whole, different perspective. Now I enjoy meeting new people and learning new things. College experience has broaden my knowledge on social life, career, and most importantly on what I want to become in my life. Ten years ago, I wanted to become a doctor, engineer as most kids do but now if anyone asks me what I want to be in my life, I could proudly say that I have set my goal to be an accountant. Thus, being a college student has become an important part of my life.

Education is the most important part in a person's life, lesson taught by parents. In fact, this is true. I have never thought of education as being useless. There are many reasons behind the fact of me being educated. First, I could have a healthy future. I could support my siblings in their effort towards their good future. I could support my children and fulfill all their needs. There always comes a time in parents’ life where he/she wants her children to be prosperous in their life. For that dream to come true, parents need to make sure that their children choose the right path to their success. Parents don't want to leave behind even a tiny effort for their children to be happy in their future. The key element in this dream is the education. Now, I am stressing so much on children to be successful because if parents are educated, they will be successful and they will support their children’s education and they can be a living example for them. I want to be an example for my siblings and for my children. Also, I want to make my parents dream to come true.

At the time I enrolled into North Hennepin Community College I was also attending high school, taking rigorous honors courses (IB) and working an intensive part time job. It was towards the end of my senior year on May 25th 2010 which added more complexity to the situation but also excitement; I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to become a Nurse and I would make every sacrifice needed to achieve my goal. I remember missing both prom and my graduation walk in order to be present in my Ethics class and my part-time job at Dairy Queen. Many would not have made that sacrifice but I did because college is important to me, it is a fresh start, and a great opportunity I will involve myself in for the rest of my life. Through is process I have also discovered that I am a multitasker and who feeds on stress, challenge, and work – and being a black gay male independence and sacrifice is not something commonly found, at least not where I come from. I am fighting for success as an mean to escape redundancy and college has given me the key.

What I have gotten out of my college experiance is that I need to take responsiblity for my life and cannot relay on others to get me the places I need/ want to go. College has showed me that I am the only one to blam if i fale and be proud when I succed. this is valuble learning experiance because it has helped me grow as a person and realize that I need to take responsiblity for me and what I do with my future.

My college experience has enabled me to grow in ways I never imagined. I didn't know anyone when I arrived at Benedictine University, traveling outside of my comfort zone and being forced to make new friends has changed me in many ways. I have a fresh perspective of life thanks to college. I have also discovered many things about myself as a result of moving away to college. I found my true passions in life and am now peursuing them. Going away to college has, in turn, made me a happier, more complete person.

Magdalena

At the beginning of my college career I have not spoke English well. It has been the biggest challenge to attend school and not understand too much in the class, not able to perform well on the exam, not able to properly complete the homework. Also, my parents pushed me too much to finish college. I did not understand their thinking and why they want me so bad to finish college. I thought I can do well without it. In matter of fact I was doing well without college degree. So I was proving them wrong. My philosophy has started altering when my son was born. My life turned around completely changing everything that I used to for so many years. Even though my life is more hectic then has been before I am more organized now. The main purpose in my life now - to be the best example for my son. Definitely I got lesson of life from attending, then quitting and begging college again. At this time though I am dedicated student with 4.0 GPA and getting closer to the finish line.

I have learned a lot of hands on experience about higher education. I now better understand the issues affecting higher education and possible solutions. This experience is going to help me better work as a team member with my colleagues and to carry our research in the areas of retention of minorities at institutions of higher learning. It has also trained me to be a better and all round administrator of a higher education institution.

Greg

What I have gotten out of my college is valuable. Before attending college I felt that school was not for me. I was a slightly above average high school student with out a care in the world. I felt strongly about attending the military. As far as attending college, that was the farthest option from my mind. The military option didn't work out for me. It took some time but I soon enrolled into my local community college. At first I didn't know what to expect but I attended anyway. As I made it through my classes I realize that it wasn't as bad as I once thought. I came across a few teachers that were passionate about their jobs in educations students. This was a change from my high school. As I continued through classes I recived really good grades which suprized me because I thought that I was just an average student. After my first semester I was as by teachers and staff to join the honors program offered at the school as well as to help other students along the way. This was exciting for me because I had never been as this before.

I hope to be welcomed and at home when attending BU. I hope to make as many "true" friends as possible and excel greatly at my studies.

julie

What I hope to get out of my college experience is the wonderful feeling of accomplishment. And also to have the ability to show my children you can accomplish whatever you want if you work hard enough no matter what other people expected of you. A nursing carreer will give me the opportunity to help support my family and make them proud of me. No one ever thought that someone who became a mother at the age of fifteen would ever amount to much but thanks to the support of my husband, we have shown them every step of the way that we will do what is best for my family no matter what.

Twenty years ago, I was full of excitement and anticipation for starting college right out of high school. I had dreamed of graduating from college for a long time, something no one in my family had ever accomplished. But due to some personal circumstances, those dreams never reached the finish line. Now, almost twenty years later, I am more determined than ever to finish what I had started. I went back to school two years ago on a part-time basis to test the waters, and then decided to go full-time last year, even resigning from my full-time career for the past nine years. Sad to say, now I am going through financial and marital challenges all over again. But if I stop now, I know for a fact that I will look back from the future and regret it, as I have been doing all these years... In my case, college life did not exactly turn out the way I had planned or expected. I can only hope that the rewards of all my hard labor will be realized. And if not, at least I can say, "I made it!". Finally.

Courtney

I have learned it takes more determination than anything to suceed; it takes the desire to suceed and when a stuggle comes along, enough courage to set as side your pride and ask for help. This gives the student a reality check to show them they are still learning and infact don't know it all, something most students walk around thinking they do. A student needs to be balanced as well. Sports and Extracurricular activities such as clubs keep as student's head out of the clouds or overstressed with studies. It also helps develop people skills that the student will need in the real world; as they work with a variety of personalities daily. It has been vaulable to attend Benedictine University because it helped me to realize my full potential; that I can be anything I want if I set my mind to it.

Danielle

I have gotten responsibility out of my college experience. Since being away from home, I have learned how to manage my time better, and take care of myself. I have learned how to seperate my priorities from the things that are not so important. I also have valued my education more because its something that I am financially responsible for, and it is up to me to get things done.

james

I just started A tech school. So far its great. Im learning alot, and it is A great way to start a new career.

Jennifer

The best experience I've had by attending college is preparation for the real world. I have learned that working hard will get you anything you want. It has been valuable to me to attend college because it has taught me that working hard will get you ahead. Whether my dreams are big or small, going through the process and working hard helps you achieve them.

Theresa

I am returning to college after a 10 year absence. Getting my bachelors degree has improved my self confidence, knowledge and ability to overcome obstacles. Going back to school will allow me to change my career to one that is more gratifying on personal, professional and spiritual levels.

Grace

I see going to college as the next step after high school if I want to be somebody in life. Going to college will help me achieve my career goal of becoming a doctor one day. It is valuable to attend college to learn what we need to know to become successful in life. Also, in the process of going to college I have made lifetime friends and gained new positive experiences. College is a time for independence, learning and a way to prepare oneself for the future. Having a college education will expose me to many different things and it will help me become more well rounded. By going to college, students will contribute so much more to society than they would if they don?t get a higher education. In addition, if they decide to start a family later on in life they can have financial stability. Finally, having a college education will help me get a financial income that is necessary to live in today?s fast changing world.

Think knowledgebly before taking any decisssion.

if i could go back to high school, i would advise myself to do several things. First, i would tell myslelf to take more college prepatory classes and exams. While i took several in high school, i truly learned the value of these classes when i enrolled in college. In addition, i would tell myslef to acquire better study habits as well as focus on getting a perfect gpa, which i believe is very attainable. in addition, i would convince myself to live on campus in order to get the the full college experience. last but not least i would tell myself to meet many more new people than i currently have.

Nadia

She smiled at her memory come to life, blue gowns exited the high school. She discovered her within that blue sea. Pulling her aside, she said to the gaping girl, ?I don't have much time. I'm the future you. Proof? You have an ear infection. Sad to have it on graduation day. But I need to tell you... A bit of a college crash course really: To get those A's, you have to study on your own. Your teachers aren't going to spoon feed you. Make a schedule of when to study. Don't procrastinate, do a little each day. Designate a specific place to study in your room and at school. Give yourself enough time by not wasting it on TV. Get involved in extra curricular activities from the get go. Experiences from these will make you a more rounded person. Experiences are what we all live for. But most importantly, breathe. You're young. Don't worry too much. Things usually work themselves out in the end. Remember: do you best, and God will do the rest. Enjoy every moment of what you have. No regrets. Carpe Diem...?And just like that, she disappeared.

Before college, it was truly my number one fear. I stressed myself out so much anticipating the change and unexpected sector that was quickly turning into a reality. The night before I left and was packing my car I began crying because I was so scared of the change that was happening and was afraid to embrace it. I am such a perfectionist and equally a diligent planner, and not being able to plan out my every move at a new school with new people took an overhaul on my mind and emotional status. If I had to go back in time I would tell myself to relax. Since college I have made the best of friends, learned more about myself than I had ever imagined I would, became more independent, and truly became comfortable accepting new possibilites and changes which may or may not happen down my life's path.

Gintare

Don't be scared or nervous. Professors are here to help you achieve your goals. They will assist you in anything you need. Make sure to be nice to them and greet them before every class. Classes are going to be a bit more difficult but you can set your schedule the way you want to. Make sure to study a lot individually because in class all details will not be covered. Teachers won't tell you what will be on the exams; it is your duty to pay attention and study on your own. No one will be calling home or giving you a detention if you are late to class. You are officially an adult and need to start acting like one. Just remember to take it easy and don't lose yourself. Meet as many people as you can and get to know them. There will be such a variety of different races, religions ,and cultures. Diversity will be all around you. Let your adventures begin!

Erik

If i could go back i would tell myself to mainly focus on my GPA and ACT to get into a good college than going for all AP classes in the IB diploma program.

Erika

College is what you choose to make of it. If you know you want to pursue a graduate school education, the most important thing in undergrad is to keep your grades up. This most likely means taking summer courses so that each semester load allows for sufficient time to study. School is a once in a lifetime opportunity, make the most of it!

Jennifer

Apply yourself even if you are not interested in every class required in the high school cirriculum. Get the best grades possible and talk to a career counselor of some sort to obtain some guidance on which career to choose. Start working toward a degree as soon as you figure out what you want to do with your life. Save the partying for later.

Stephany

If I were given the opportunity to go back in time to my senior year I could give myself many advice. To begin, I would tell myself to get involved in many activites. It's important to have a balance between our schoolwork and our social lives. I would also advice myself to practice successful studying habits since they pay off in the long run. It's also important to seek help from staff If any questions come up. Faculty and staff are there to help and want to see every individual be successful, they will guide you towards the right direction.

Lea

Do what makes you happy. Do not attend a college or university just becasue someone told you to or becasue a friend is going there, because if you do, you'll be miserable. Also, pick a major that you want to pursue and that will make you happy for the rest of your life because once you have that degree, you have to work with it. No matter what, enjoy yourself while at school; it's a time to learn and think and grow and play.....so do just that.

Jaclyn

It is very important to visit each college you are considering. Try to visit on a non-visit day to experience the campus as it is on a normal day. When you are there, don't be afraid to ask students questions to get a feel for the campus. It might be helpful to make a pro/con list of each school you visit to help make your final decision. Once you have gotten to the school of your choice, be open to new situations. Keep your door open if you live in a dorm. Go to as many events as you can. When you start classes, talk to the students around you. Form study groups for your tougher classes. Your college experience will be what you make of it. You are now on your own without mom and dad right there next to you. Go out and take what you deserve, be successful!

Lindsey

Explore your options. Don't limit your education to locations. You can find your best opportunites sometimes in schools that are far away. Always explore the possibilities for financial aid and scholarships. It is very easy to join fraternities or sororities to recieve a lot of grants and tuition reimbursment. Also, the most important advice I can offer is that of knowing your counselor or advisor. They will insure that you are taking the appropriate classes and aren't taking any classes that will not transfer to any other schools. Always check transfer credits before signing up for classes. This will save you thousands of dollars and perhaps years off of your college career.

Jennifer

Visit a lot of colleges, ask a lot of questions, and talk to current students

Kristopher

The decision to find the perfect college can be quite confusing and difficult. I tackled this process by first documenting my personnel expectations for what a college experience should consist of. Then I prioritized my list and placed in into a rating scale. Upon visiting each college I would take my list and rate each item to see where it ranked. I then added all the numbers up and divided to find which college best suited me. For example, one of my items on the list was quality of food. Upon visiting Benedictine I rated the food quality as a 10, the highest, because the food was quite tasty. Benedictine by far was the perfect match for me. I would say to make the most of the college experience, the second part of the question, you should meet as many people as possible. This has been the most rewarding part of my college experience thus far. Learning and experiencing different cultures and peoples is quite educational in and of itself. The diversity and cultural awareness has enlightened my whole being. It has made me become a more open minded and culturally sensitive individual. I thank Benedictine for that experience.

Jillian

College is all about making transitions and finding yourself. Find a college that will expose you to new people and different ideas even if it may seem scary at first. Your ideal college doesn't have to be the textbook picture of a university, it just has to feel like home.

Krystle

When choosing a college, be sure to visit different sizes and apply to several schools. It is important that you know if you want a big or small school, close to home or far away and ask lots of questions during visits. Don't apply to just one school and hope you get in, you need to have backups. Get to know your advisor when you finally chose a school. Don't blow off your freshmen year because it is the building block of the rest of your years there. Study hard and don't be afraid to see your professors outside of class; they are usually very nice. Go out places and meet new people, don't be shy because you may meet some friends you will have the rest of your lives. Time management is key, so set a time to study and a time to just hang out with friends so you don't get too stressed out. Finally, have fun because after your four years in college, its time for the real world.

Haley

It's easier to pick a college close to home and it costs less. Also colleges are willing to offer more money to people who live in the neighbor, get good grades, and high ACT scores. Pick a college that strikes you as comfortable right off the bat. When you get into a college become involved on campus in order to say updated about what's going on and meet new people. College is not all about drinking, it's about making all the years you went to school count for something and making the most out of life. When you pick a major make sure you enjoy it. If you're bored with the things you are doing in class then you need to switch your major and find something that excites you. Overall, just have fun in college while you can before you are dragged into the working world.

Mary

Choose a college that fits you best, but don't break the bank.

Sharena

I would say for students, because they are the one attending, to be as precise and sure as possible before choosing. It's extremely hard to change schools, and begin again. It's important to try to make the best possible choice for in a college that provides what you need/want.

Edwin

Visit different colleges and talk to students. Also, get to know the size and pace of the classes. If possible talk to some of the proffessors.

Roksana

The best advice to give to parents/students to find the right college is very tough. Each student is different in what he/she likes and best fits her. It is important to go and visit the college and if you feel that you are comfortable in the setting then it is on choice you can make. I would visit a college and spend a weekend there with a group or do some community service to see how the students are and how they like the campus. This way you can eat the food, see the library, and understand the different settings and activities the school has to offer. Most of all, do not pick a school based on where friends go. A student can always make friends and keep in touch with old friends. Know what is the best program for the school and if you wish to study that particular field, the best school would be with a strong program in that particular field.

JOHN

Choosing the right college is a challege for students all over the nation and the only way to accuartely dertemine what school will best suit you is by knowing what kind of a person you are. The right school is dependent on your personality, work ethics, and maturity. College is going to be the first step to adulthood and many people do not realize this until they are well into their college years. It is very improtant that you work hard and commit youself to a vigorous lifestyle. If you do not feel like your ready yet, the best thing to do would be to go to a local community college and see if you are ready for university level work. Along with work vigorosity, you should consider choosing the right school based on your personality. There are many school out there, and the only way you can choose the right one is by selecting one that best suits your personality. Also having the maturity of a college student before going to college will allow you to do much better in school. so finally, remember that when choosing the right college, look at your personality and work ethics and maturiry.

Anna

I would really recommend to do a pro and con list of every school .Write down the things that are most valueable to you about your education. Be very responsible for your actions. Study very hard and do not just study to remember because you will forget, study to understand and you will always remember. Be determined about your goals and never let anyone tell you that you can't achieve your goals. Always have a positive attitude about yourself and never underestimate what you can do. Always remember that the beautiful thing about learning is that no one can ever take it away from you.

Nilofur

When choosing the college, choose one that'll focus on two of the careers that you see yourself in. Make sure that your accessibility to your professors is as easy as they claim it to be. Never attend college because of all the parties that you hear happens or because your friends are going that college. It's all about growing, adapting, and most of all learning. Don't set yourself up for a disappointing college experience because you choose a college that many people you know will be attending or the majority of your race and such is attending. Broaden your knowledge and your tolerance. Never settle for anything less than what you think you deserve. Just because you think you will never get accepted to a certain university, do not not apply! TAKE THE CHANCE!!! You'll never know if you could get into a certain university because you didn't believe in yourself. Most of all, have fun. Work and play. You need a lil bit of each other.

Rene

Is it comfortable enough for you children.

Find one that you can actually afford!
