What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Marcus

I would strongly suggest joining greek life. A fraternity was the best choice I ever could have made, I have made a lot of friends and gotten a lot out of it as well. It really helped when moving here and not knowing a single person.

Anthony

First, college is important and deciding where to go and why needs to make sense toward an individual's future goals. Gaining a higher education should be an extension of working hard early on in life and choosing a school shouldn?t be about following old friends, but making new ones and making good decisions. All things considered, financial needs, location, academic offerings, and availability are important things to look at when choosing a school, but ?what? do you really want from college? Successful students are confident in their choice of school because of desire to be there, and this is a more personal choice than just for the reasons previously listed. Secondly, getting most out of the college experience is entirely reliant on a person?s own aspirations and ambitions. School isn't ?all? about academics, but also friendships, life experiences, service commitments, and giving back. All college campuses offer opportunities for students to get involved and to be part of the community is important to grow as a person. Life after college will require participation in a community dimension in the working world, and college is the place to learn how to be part of the team.

Jeff

Choose your college not solely based on academics, but also on extra curriculars. If you do not enjoy your campus/social life it will be that much more difficult for you to enjoy and strive in your academic life. A healthy and happy person will learn easier than one that has other concerns/problems to worry about.

David

I would tell both parents and students who are looking for the right college is to do your research. Go online and find out all that you can. Go beyonf that and visit the campus. Talk to current students, professors, and alumni. Knowledge is power. Knowing everything about where you want to continue your higher education is the best tool you can have.

Kelly

The first thing a prospective student should look for is a school that supports their interests. If you don't know what you want your career path to be, then look for a school that has a very diverse curriculum. Next you need to take into consideration what sort of financial package you can obtain. This is important because you don't want to overextend yourself working full time to support yourself while going to school. You need to also look into how involved your school is with the business community and how interactive they are in giving students a chance to experience different career choices. Lastly, pick a location and local that you will be comfortable in. If you are a beachy, don't go to school in Alaska.

taylor

My advice is that there is always an oppurtunity and options for financial help and aid out there. Don't let a school's cost get in the way of you pursuing your dreams. Dream big and reach farther.

Roy

When selecting a college visit the campus to evaluate if the potential student likes the atmosphere presented by the campus, but the student to be should visit more than one so he/she has somehting to compare. An enjoyable atmosphere allows the student to more easily balance leisure and academics. A happy student is usually a successful one. Remember schoolwork should be a priority, but there are other things the college experience provides. There are numerous social, cultural, and fun events that schools provide, so take advantage of them. Once a school is chosen, take it seriously. GO TO CLASS. Going to class is an essential part of the education process, Proffesors often time test on material that was only available in the lectures they give. If you have ot miss class ask the Proffesor for an out of class meeting to see what you missed. Lastly make time for some fun. As mentioned before a balance is the key to a happy and successful person/student.

katie

make sure that the school has an appealling environment and academic program that fit your specific needs.

Adam

When finding the right place to truly find yourself in the library, sports field, and thriving city in your mind one should always put on the shoes of the higher learning campus they desire and wear them in a little. After a second, minute, or even weekend a person can really know if something fits. Its a primal instinct that we all possess and just make sure you can find your classes, can relate to the people to walk up to an meet, but most importantly be able to live with yourself in your own skin. The hard part abour graduating from college in the economic depression we now find this vast nation spiraling down in is not always the financial burden. It's being able to find a place were you can go out in the community and feel safe laughing with others, and being able to have time to finish those tought math assignments and ten plus page essays. It all really comes down to where can you not be afraid.

Lacee

Advice I would give to anyone who's looking at college is don't jump right into it. There's nothing wrong with going out and getting some life experience before getting into college it helps you make the "what you want to do with your future" question a lot easier to answer.

Rebecca

Make sure they have their priorities straight.

David

Make sure it is a school you want to attend. Cause it will be home for 4-5 years or even more.

Casey

Finding the right college is hard, especially when you have no idea what you want to do with your life. I would suggest picking a college that has many opportunities for you to experiment with different majors and decide which one is best for you. To make the most of this experience, try a variety of classes that interest you. Once you find subjects that you can relate to, take more classes on that subject. For example, when I came to college, I had no idea what I wanted to be. I started out by taking different core classes. All the classes were interesting, but i ended up loving my Child Educational and Psychology class. The class was an intruduction to learning and teaching. It was after this class that i realized I wanted to be an elementary school teacher. My advice to students about making the most of their college career is to never give up. College can be very frustrating, but with persistance, determination, and a lot of patience, it can help you figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life and become successful doing what you love.

Kamille

As far as choosing the right college I would make myself aware of the degrees available from the college. You don't have to know exactly what you want to study in college but just making sure that the college has lots of programs that interest you is important. I would tell students to make sure and get involved on- and off-campus, and don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone to meet new people. Of course you also have to consider the cost because being stressed about how you are going to pay for college can distract you from the real reason that you are in college, which is to get an education. Also, just remember that "what you don't know, you don't know" and, especially in college, you are responsible for finding the answers to your questions. There are always people on campus willing to give some guidance and help but it is your job to seek them out. Overall, if you work hard and just have fun with your college experience it will all fall into place.

Emily

Don't be afraid to ask all the questions you have and explore every college you have an interest in. There is no such thing as a bad or dumb question and it is impossible to pick the right school if you don't know enough about it. You may need to think about calling the admissions office and asking if you can sit in on a 100 level class or touring the campus as well as the surrounding area. Don't be afraid to ask if the campus is known as a party school or if the alcohol consumption is relatively low. It's also important to talk to the financial aid office and make sure that you will be able to afford to attend the school of your choice. They may know of scholarships or grants that you're elegible for that aren't necessarily well known.

Elizabeth

Advice to give parents and prospective students looking for the right university is to make sure that university has a good reputation with the education and studies that student is wanting to study and is concerned about the student's future and experience at the university.

Eli

I don't know what college is going to be right for you so If I have any advice concerning picking your college I would say that you should start looking in advance so that you can plan for tuition, housing, and other costs. I started too late and now I'm stuck working nearly full-time and going to school full time simultaneously which has made the experience more difficult than it needs to be. The only other advice I would give would be on the academic level. Don't start college if you aren't committed to it. I see too many students taking classes that have no idea why they are taking them. These are also usually the students that get the worst grades and end up taking classes over and over again. Even though college is a great way to get ahead and seems like the next logical step after highschool if it doesn't mean anything to you personally it's a waste of your time and money. You have to take college seriously to do well.

Jessica

Always ask questions!! Even if they do not seem that important still ask them.

Casey

College it very intimidating and can be very overwhelming. I would have to let the parents and the student of any future college know that for the parents it's time to let your children move on to bigger things and most importantly life. Don't worry if you don't hear from them every week, it's not like they don't love you anymore, but in all reality they are coming to the realization of how much you really did for them, and have most likely gained more appreciation for you. For the future student it's okay to have fun at college. It's not a race to see who can get in and out the fastest. It's meant to be fun and exciting but do remember why you are really there. Overall it will be great times. You'll then look back and see that college was some of your best times and that you made life time friends and connections, that's the way it should be. Finally Enjoy yourself, you're not grown up yet.

Peter

Make a choice that is financially smart, as well as academically smart. Don't decide what you want to major in too quickly, take a variety of classes and delve into a couple more advanced classes in the area(s) you are thinking of before you make your final decision. Don't be afraid to change if you decide it isn't what you really want, and don't feel forced to go one way or abandon what you really want to do just because of how much money you can make. If you love what you are doing, then you will find a way to make it work. Lastly, apply to more than one school and aim high by applying to one or two that you don't think you will be accepted into. You never know...

Julie

It's hard to say what a senior coming out of high school should expect at college. You really hold the fate in what happens in your college career. The best thing to do is get involved in any way that you can on and off campus, doing this will open up your doors ominously.

Nathan

Do not expect the college experience shown in movies and tv programs.

Trent

Let the student pick what they want, even if it doesn't turn out to be the right one. It is all a very good experience, even if the school isn't right for you in the end. Money can always be found, don't let it get in the way.

Candice

Know what you want from the university, beyond the degree.

Amanda

I would suggest finding a college that fits your personality in regards to location, student activities, and degrees available. I make the most of my college experience by being involved in my classes and the extra-curricular activities that the college offers. There are so many student activites that go on and business that give discounts to students that offer a great deal of activites to do throughout the school year.

Matt

My advice would be to look for an environment where the student feels like they are worth something. If they feel like their presence is valued then their feeling of self-worth will increase. If students feel appreciated and feel like they're a part of something great then great things can happen both on an individual level and a university level. I attended a different university before choosing Boise State where I felt that I was just another number. I felt like there was a lot of pressure to fit a certain mold and in the end that is what pushed me away from that university. At Boise State I feel like I'm wanted and that means a great deal to me. I feel like I'm free to be who I want to be and do what I want to do. So my advice is to go to a school that's going to give you the liberty to accomplish your dreams and give you the help you need to do it.

Kija

When parents and/or students spend time reviewing choices of universities and colleges available, it is imparative to remember that no matter what school you decide upon, it is up to the student to make that school theirs. If you begin your college career with feelings of regret for your choice, it will be even harder to deal with that choice after your get into it. But if you decide on a school that is realistic for you, appropriate for you and most of all, appealing to you, then you will have made the right decision.

Bethany

Buckle your seatbelt, highschool is over and college is beginning! If you need to take some time off after highschool, do it. Too often students rush into college not knowing their life goals. But when the time comes...take your time choosing a college, four years out of your life is a long time. Consider location, quality of academics, and price of various schools carefully. Then, after you have begun your college career...be dedicated and self-motivated, homework never does itself. Begin assigments as soon as they are assigned, it is better to hand in assignments early than late and you will save yourself much stress doing so. Respect your professors and fellow class mates while enjoying every minute with them, the best classroom experience is one in which there are friends. Get involved with campus activites, they are a fun way to aquaint yourself with the school and make friends. Ride your bike to campus, a healthy dose of exercise will give you precious energy for those hours in class. The college experience is incredibly unique and a great privilege so enjoy it!

Megan

The advice I would give other students and or parents about choosing the right college would be to visit the school of interest and see if it is an environment that is comfortable. That if you choose a school and community that is comfortable for you other things like making friends, meeting teachers, school work, school activities, community activities would be easier to adapt to. To get the most out of the college experience is to do your absolute best at all of the things that interest you. May it be school work or clubs or activities you are involved in. Just put 100{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} effort into everything that you do.

Anne

If I could give advice to prospective students I would stress the importance of finding a college that makes them comfortable and can provide them with all of the skills and knowledge to suceed in their lives. Students should try and visit the colleges they might want to attend to be able to experience them first hand. If some aspect of life is important to the student, such as sports, making sure they have opportunities for them is also important. To make the most out of their college experience students should focus on their academics. Social activities are important by allowing students to have a broad range of experiences that can enrich their lives. However they should not distract from the main goal of college which is gaining skills and knowledge. Perhaps it is hard for some students exiting high school to realize that what they do in college will directly effect all aspects of their lives. They should know that they have everything to gain, and nothing to lose. Students must apply themselves and put all of their effort into acquiring the skills and knowledge that will allow them to enter the field of their study as professionals.

Nathan

Get involved. No amount of talent or studying will make your college experience as satisfying and fun as being linked to the university and the others who attend it. Being apart of the activities around campus gets you connected in a way that is more meaningful than just going to class each morning. Making friends and meeting new people in this manner lets you find people who you likely would never talk to otherwise, and it gives you one more tool to be able to deal with tough times with class or just life in general (and believe me, some times will be tough). But most of all, the more involved in the school you are, the more control over its future direction you have. Nothing is quite as empowering as knowing that you have a part in your schools destiny, and by extension your own.

Heather

go to that college and take a ture during the semester for the day.

Becca

Look at your pocket book. Which school best fulfills your financial needs? College is meant to launch you forward in life not hold you back by debt. Second discover out of the school you've selected which one/s will help you obtain your degree. What?s the point of going to school if your not getting a desired education out of it? Lastly make your final decission based on the campus atmosphere. What school will make you feel them most comfortable (at home). I know I do much better in academics if I'm happy in my personal life and fill at peace in my surroundings. It's you life make the most of it!

Tyler

Take it seriously to all those freshman coming in. It's not high school anymore; you come here and do nothing but come to class, and you will fail. You need to apply yourself, focus and pay attention in class. I know my first year coming in here, I used the same techniques in high school. I learned real quick to change my old habits.

Daniel

The best way to begin college and have a true ?college experience? is to have purpose. Without purpose, college can be a big waste of time and money. Purpose gives rise to motivation, which in turn will give rise to success.

Zane

College gives you the opportunity to have a successful career and life. Whenever you are thinking about college, don't be close minded about what school you will attend. Go and visit campuses and make a list of pros and cons that you can see at that college. Parents, remember that your kids don't have to graduate from the same college that you did. Encourage your children to look at many different options, and prepare them by putting an emphasis on academics and a strong work ethic. While enrolled in a school, be involved in your work and campus activities. Students need to place academics before recreation, but it is important to have a mix of the two. Get rid of any stereotypes you've imagined about colleges and their students, because almost all of those stereotypes are wrong. Parents check up on your college students, but don't harass them about school and grades. Remember, your college students are becoming adults and leaving adolescence behind. Recognize their independence and encourage them whenever you can. College can be very rewarding, but also demands hard work in return.

Melissa

I have found that it is important to stay busy during college. That sounds crazy but if you have too much time on your hands, you are more likely to procrastinate because, "I can just do it later". When you only have a designated time to get something done, you get it done because that may be the only chance you have. You learn discipline and time management. Staying busy may mean working while in school-even if it's part-time or maybe just volunteering on the weekends. But don't over extend yourself, you'll get burnt out and it will be hard to enjoy school. Discipline and time management is very crucial for a college student since there is a lot of reading and studying to be done. Get involved with on-campus activities and sit in the front of the classroom!

Sherry

Start with and advisor that is directly experienced in you area of study and visit them before enrollment each semester, call when you have questions!! Utilize the financial aid office resources and definitely go to any orientations. This is not a process that you can navigate alone.

Jonathan

Diversity. The world is shrinking every day due to increasing international markets, travel, and communication. Interacting with other cultures, social groups, races, and ethnicities is a truly broadening experience. These interactions increase your perspective from one point of view, your own, to many. The saying is that hind sight is 20/20. This is because in hind sight we have the ability to look at an experience from any angle. At the actual moment of making a decision, we are limited to our own perspective of the choices. The more diverse the experiences in your life, the broader that perspective is, making it all the more likely that you will be able to see not only the obvious possible outcomes of whatever choice you make, but the subtle likelihoods that are often missed, and often turn out to be the most important aspects. If I were to look for a school again, I would choose the one that would offer the greatest number of chances for me to experience things that I never had. Not everything can be learned from a book, some of the most important knowledge, comes from other people.

Christina

Explore as much of the college experience as you can. As you get older, it's harder to find the time to enjoy campus activities, especially if you are trying to work while attending college. Figure out what you are passionate about and join a group of like minded individuals, get involved in your community and be a vehicle for change.

Antoinette

I think the most important thing to think about when going to a college is to allow yourself to have an open mind. One of the most important things I have learned thus far in my school career is that I am not always right, and not only have I learned this, but I welcome the experience to have conversations and learn new things.

amanda

make sure you have enough financial aid and explore the school before you attend

Matthew

Make sure that it is the college that the student truly wants to go to and give them positive reenforcement on anything that they tell you.

Zane

Have an open mind about everything. Don't go into college with assumptions about how it's going to turn out, because odds are those assumptions or expectations will be blown out of the water. Sometimes it's for the good, but it can also be for the bad.

Jeff

work hard

sarah

I would tell them to live on campus for the first year no matter what. It is really difficult to make friends and connections in school if you do not have easy access to the social circles. My school is a commuter school and I chose to live off campus, I know have to work very hard to socialize with people in my classes just to try and make friends and even then, I usually only end up having those friends till the end of class. It makes college a lot easier, more enjoyable and fun if you have a group of people as your buddies through out the whole experiance. I know sometimes I hear people say what I said, that they don't want to live on campus because the dorms are small, overprices and not private, but I would have given up those luxeries of living at my own place to have a better social network now, and for the rest of my college life and maybe more.

Karina

Find a collage that works for you. Just because your best friend is going there or your parents graduated from it doesn't make it the best collage. Just find one that works for you and has the classes that you can take. Also one that is in your budget because it sucks to take out student loans.

Troy

Research it before you apply. School is expensive and you will want to be somewhere that fits your beliefs and isn't too liberal or too conservative.

Gib

Perhaps the best advice I could give anybody about to choose a college is to know one's self and know how the colleges being considered can cater to your wants, ambitions, and personality. Know why you are going to school, and try to get of an idea of whether or not you can be happy there. If a person cannot be happy where they are, then they won't deliver in class the way they should. Overall, the key is the research of one's self and the place they plan to plant themselves in.

Tim

Look for a school that gives you enough to do outside of school to be able to relax and take your mind off of your studies from time to time.
