What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Rebecca

If I was giving myself advice I would have reassured myself more that college is a clean slate. Going to college means a new opportunity to invent myself, to go out and be who I want to be, and show the world all the wonderful skills I have to offer. It is okay to be nervous about starting college, but it should also be a very exciting time of your life. Stay positive even when life's challenges are thrown your way, don't let anyone define you but yourself, and always remember that your happiness starts within yourself. Push yourself to go outside of your comfort zone at times to connect with new people and form new relationships, and don't be afraid to try something that you wouldn't typically do. College might seem like a huge leap into unknown territory, but always remember that your education is going to get you to where you want to be in life.

Being on your own will be scary at first. The independence is incredible, but you don't have mom and dad to wake you up for class. You don't have mom and dad to buy your food, or make your bed, or to clean your room. You have to set your own alarm clock, wash your own laundry, get to class on time by yourself, and not complain when things don't go your way. The hard part about this that you'll see a lot of your peers struggle with (and maybe drop out because of) is that your whining and complaints don't have an surface to bounce off of but yourself. If something goes wrong then it will be your fault, and it will be your responsibility to make it right. There's nobody to blame for your problems, and when the shit hits the fan you'll only have yourself to depend upon. It's a harsh reality for a lot of people, but that's only because they make the choice not to live up to the consequences of their own decisions. Be an adult, take responsibility for yourself, and you'll be fine.

As a high school senior I was stepping into unknown territory. I was the first in my family to attend college so no one could offer advice. My advice to myself would be stay in the dormatory and do NOT move out into an apartment!! You will have a lifetime to live on your own and your degree needs to be first priority. Your grades will suffer and eventually you will be kicked out of school because your working too much to pay for your apartment. Also get out of your dorm freshman year! There is so much to do on campus, expand your friend base and enjoy this experience. One day you will wake up and turn 40 and realize you could of had your degree if you would of just stayed in the dorm!

The first thing I would say is DON'T PROCRASTINATE! Go into college with a go-getter attitude and be prepared to give much of your time. High school seems like it is tough but compared to college it is a breeze. Keep your pride in high school because in college you will have questions..LOTS of them. Do not be afraid to ask because most of the time it is not a "dumb" question at all. Make sure to become familiar with the library, computer lab, and the tutors. It will make your college life much better. Do all of your homework even if you find it irrelevant, and make sure you spend your homework time alone so that nothing distracts you. There will probably be days that you want to give up and throw in the towel, but trust me it is worth the struggle, and when you finish you will be able to throw your hands up in the air and be proud of all your hard work! Last but not least, Make sure you apply for EVERY scholarship that comes your way because college can be quite expensive!

If I was able to go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself to start preparing for college as early as possible. I would take as many college credited courses as I could to lower the cost of tuition and also to begin searching and applying for scholarships and grants. I would also tell myself to practice and try better studying habits. By telling myself all of these tips in high school, I would have bettered my transition and experience in beginning college life.

I would tell myself not to slack off and always keep up with my work. After taking some college classes I realized that it's not as easy as I thought it would be. College classes and High School classes are alot different from one another. Also the transition from High School to College is not always easy too.
