Brandeis University Top Questions

What is the stereotype of students at your school?

Sam

The stereotype of Brandeis students is that they are a bunch of awkward Jews from the Northeast. The awkward stereotype is true for some people, especially for the Freshman. People tend to grow a lot socially at Brandeis because they are around people for the first time who share their interests and quirkiness. However, Brandeis students are not socially inept. The stereotype of Brandeis students all being Jewish is incorrect. Brandeis is a VERY diverse place, with people from a wide variety of backgrounds. As well, many of the students who are considered Jewish, are either not religious, or come from families where only parent is Jewish. Anyone who tells you non-Jewish students get ostracized or are made to feel isolated Brandeis are flat out wrong. White Christians are definitely a minority at Brandeis, since there are so many Asians and African American students, not to mention the sizable International population. I have noticed there aren't too many Hispanic students, but I could be wrong about that. The stereotype of Brandeis students all being from Northeast is partly true. The majority of domestic students do come from the Northeast, but there are people from all over the country as well. Thankfully, the large number of International students give the school a worldly feel. If you aren't looking to be exposed to a variety of different cultures and people, Brandeis isn't the place for you.

Stacey

- everyone is Jewish - everyone is ugly - Brandeis awkward!

Harper

Jewish, socially awkward, smart/overachievers

Adam

Brandeis students are often typecast as awkward, stuck-up, and square. We don't know how to throw parties, or attend them, and so we don't. Since our school population is by majority made up of people of Jewish descent or religious background, we are out-of-touch with mainstream Christian America, and spend our Fridays at prayer and Saturdays in our dorms wishing people wouldn't turn the lights off in the bathroom. And because Brandeis is a University of high academic standing, we generally draw the wealthy, socially-retarded, entitled types.

Susan

That they are all Jewish and awkward...

Anne

Everyone knows that Brandeis is a place for Jews. The stereotype is that all Brandeis students have dark curly hair that they can't manage, large noses, poor social skills, tiny hats, and very specific rules about food.

Rachel

Rachel

Jewish, liberal, rich, nerdy, socially inept, pro-Israel, ugly.

Laura

Arielle

Apparently, everyone at Brandeis is wicked unattractive. I don't really see it-- there are attractive people everywhere! You just have to know your type. Another stereotype is that everyone's Jewish. We do have a large contingency of Jewish students, but there are tons of different religions represented at Brandeis.

Most of the negative stereotypes about Jews are also applied to Brandeis students in general: nerdy, quiet, awkward, and (it pains me to say it) unattractive. There are also some Brandeis specific stereotypes, like being overcommited or overworked.

Nelson

Jewish, nerdy, never go out drinking/partying, awkward, the girls are ugly.

Awkwardness, no learned social interaction skills, everyone at least double majors, it's a "Jew school" Ex: How do you tell an extrovert from an introvert at Brandeis? They look at your shoes instead of their own.

David

JEWISH. Awkward: people tend to joke that awkwardness is born at Brandeis. Smart, but not party animals. Plenty of JAPs (Jewish American Princess) and rich kids. Just below the Ivies in terms of ability: most kids who go there, only went because they got rejected from Harvard. Very friendly, but a bit strange.

Caroline

There is no party scene. Brandeis students are incredibly socially awkward. 9 out of 10 Jewish girls are pretty, and the other one goes to Brandeis.

Charlie

People say Brandeis is home of awkward. They also say the only people who go there are Jewish. I've also heard it said that at Brandeis, marijuana is the alcohol-- meaning that it's the most common way of getting un-sober.

Jesse

Brandeis students are thought to be generally awkward and socially confused...people don't usually think of students as good looking over all. Students are also extremely into their academics and clubs, and are very intelligent, hardworking individuals.
