Interesting.

Christine

My classmates are very passionate about their values and beliefs and will argue adamantly for what they believe is right, even if there is opposition against them.

Ebony

In the same breath, my classmates can be frustrating, beautiful, intoxicating, revolting people. Brown is designed to facilitate conversation and (in many ways) it has proved to be the most uncomfortable conversations to have. However, they are the most rewarding, thought-provoking talks with the colest people I ever met.

For the most part, Brown students are intellectually curious, hard working, and accomplished individuals. A good number of Brown students are valedictorians and salutatorians of their high schools. In fact, 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students who got accepted for the Class 2015 are valedictorians/salutatorians. Indeed, many are from privileged and wealthy backgrounds and it will be hard for you not to come across someone who did not attend a college preparatory or private high school. With that being said, keep in mind that this "elitist" characteristic is just as prevalent in other Ivies. Nevertheless, Brown prides itself in TRYING to foster a socioeconomically diverse student body so it's quite likely that you will find students from all walks of life.

Danielle

Crazy, incredible, unique, diverse, and laid back, all at the same time.

B

Brown is a very accepting and open-minded environment. I don't know much about the LGBTQ community here, but it does exist and definitely plays a role in campus life. There's also a fair amount of racial and ethnic diversity, and it's always interesting to meet international students here. Some people tend to hang out with cliques of friends that are similar to them but there's a lot of interaction between people of different backgrounds overall. A lot of students are financially well-off, and people here in general dress well.

Kathryn

Enthusiastic, inspiring, passionate

Gabrielle

It is rare to find a student that feels out of place at Brown University. There are all different student groups, and if one searches the brown community, they will find a place that tehy love to be. Many students are in multiple clubs and build their social network off of these clubs, and will often integrate their social circles at gathering. Most students either come from New England or California, with many having graduated from prep or private schools. Most students are dressed up for classes on a daily basis although at times students will be seen in workout attire, usually after coming from the gym. Students at Brown are very politically active, predominantly left.

Solomon

Brown has a very strong LGBTQ community, and is notorious for its annual "Sex Power God" party which happens in the Fall semester, which is sponsored by a University group to help students discover their sexual selves. There is a good representation of minorities, but the school is mostly white. Asian students constitute the largest minority group represented on campus. There is generally a safe space for students of every ethnicity and religion at Brown whether it be the Third World Center, the Brown/RISD Hillel, the Machado international house, or the LBGTQ center, there is a place for everyone to meet people like them. About two thirds of the student body are on some sort of financial aid.

Ana

Brown is a diverse place. I'd like to think that no type of student could find themselves entirely out of place here. However, students tend to be liberal, accepting of diversity, and focused on education for its own sake.

Katherine

Most students are very open and interested about learning about other perspectives whether they be racial, religious, LGBT, etc. The only kinds of students that I think would feel out of place would be those who are super socially conservative. Most students (esp girls) are very fashionable which can be annoying to those who prefer sweats. :P There are many wealthy students and the socio-economic gap is at times obvious, but, as one on finaid, it has never been an issue in any way.

Aniqa

My class mates are open minded, liberal and friendly.

India

My classmates come from all over the United States and around the world, which makes our campus very diverse, and it is easy to learn about other cultures through students.

Jonathan

The student body is racially diverse, but not necessarily socioeconomically diverse. So it will be somewhat difficult for those from different backgrounds to adjust. But that's typical for the Ivies, and it's certainly much better than the rest of our peers. Brown does have resources available specifically targeted to underrepresented students of color, first-generation college students, LGBTQ, etc. There are many resources available. Conservative students will have their views challenged by most of the student body, especially if they are vocal about their views. But rest assured there are other conservative students on campus and campus groups that exist such as the Brown Spectator (whether anyone reads it is another question). Students generally lean liberal, but it doesn't mean they're politically active. Protests do occur a few times a year (especially during ADOCH, when admitted students visit), but are generally restricted to a small vocal few on campus (maybe around 200 or so). Unless a major controversy happens, which has not during my time at Brown. They will do obnoxious stuff such as use a ladder to try to get into a Corporation meeting.... The rest of the students are too busy with their lives.

Christine

At Brown, I am surrounded by an extremely diverse and open-minded group of peers with different backgrounds, interests, and beliefs who all share a passion for learning and pursuing their goals.

Jacquelyn

At times smart and inspiring, however there are the few arrogant/ignorant people.

Alejandra

My classmates all love to learn.

Sara

Grounded explorers looking to find truth in their own individual ways.

Vikram

Brown students are typically dynamic, open-minded individuals who make up for there slight social awkwardness with a high level of intellect in addition to a tolerant outlook regarding a wide variety of issues.

Scotty

My classmates all seem to be happy, friendly, and have the desire to make a difference in the world.

Andrew

Students at Brown are the kind of people who you meet once and think they're really cool and laid-back, and then a few weeks later you'll be talking to them and you realize that they're also really smart.

Annika

My classmates at Brown are very helpful, kind, and sincere; always willing to lend a helping hand if need be.

Rachel

Brown students are liberal, environmentally conscious, politically aware, friendly, passionate, independent, quirky, laid-back, competent, fun-loving, supportive, and enthusiastic.

Anna

My classmates are fun, open-minded, relaxed, diverse, and happy students who are naturally intelligent and good at a wide variety of things but are not too stressed and are loving every second at Brown.

James

My classmates are diverse , laid-back, intelligent, resourceful, artistic, fun-loving, cari.ng , passionate, and eager to learn

Sara

My classmates thoroguhly enjoy learning, they are all in the classroom because they want to be there and are interested in the subject matter. Because there is no core curriculum whatever class someone chooses, they choose it because they are actually interested in the class not because they are required to take it making the classroom a friendly, fun, and focused learning environment thanks to the students who fit all of those criterium.

Rebekah

Artistic, creative, liberal-minded. Can be a bit indifferent and mean. Most however are friendly and easy-going. People are under a lot of pressure because there is so much going on and classes are hard but no one is really competitive with other students unless in pre-med or science courses.

Anish

They are one of a kind hipsters.

Ashley

My classmates are intelligent, quirky, and socially awkward.

Jake

Mostly rich, liberal as all hell, hipster kids that are full of themselves but still very kind for the most part and a lot more normal and less smart than I had originally expected before coming here.

Alyssa

They are passionate, liberal students looking to make a difference.

malika

Brown students are very liberal.

Rosi

Some people are pretentious and others are down to earth-- they're all different!

Justa

Socially retarded, green, frothy-mouthed-ultra-liberal, naive, genderqueer, overprivileged, paradoxically borderline racist, ultra-feminist, annoying, whiny, guilted bastards who really have no idea how the real world works.

John

Intelligent, thoughtful, and opinionated

Justin

They're cool, friendly, artsy, and liberal.

Warren

My classmates are highly motivated, intelligent individuals who have a very bright future ahead of them.

Natalie

Curious, generous, and broad-minded intellectually and politically, but sometimes insular socially.

Sargon

My Brunonian classmates are self-aware, engaging, and wickedly intelligent students, who are as independent in their thinking and behavior as they are comfortable taking it easy or

Jimmy

Amazingly passionate--about something, or even everything! Our curriculum is completely open to your imagination, so it comes as no surprise that most of the students here are the ones who are self-motivated to pursue their own passions. The unsuccessful students are the ones who can't seem to find a passion. The culture is very supportive and open. Cliques exist, but they are extremely liquid, constantly morphing and melding and mixing. They exist only because you can't be friends with everyone on campus. Students are predominantly left, and only the most courageous right are outspoken--most conservatives hide their political affiliation. No one talks about how much they'll earn one day, but maybe that's because I didn't party with the investment bankers. Brown students are from all over the country and from all different kinds of backgrounds. Most have financial means, but there are a significant number who are on grants, scholarships, and loans. It is, after all, a need blind school. Everyone goes to class casual, dressing to impress only for the nicest of social events.

Sara

My classmates, though sometimes timid at first, are intelligent, inspired, and engaged, though sometimes I wonder if they just like to hear themselves talk.

Ashley

Friendly, Independents, quirky, caring, smart.

David

Very friendly and funny, they are all original. Genuine personalities and interesting stories are commonplace, and most are eager to meet new people. Sometimes they may seem a bit too out of the box, but there are always others like them. If you're a unique individual, or just open minded, and are searching for others like you or new ideas Brown University is the place for you.

Daniel

Wealthy, spoiled, out of touch with the real world, but, for the most part, academically motivated.
