There isn't really popular groups on campus but many people are involved in the arts, mainly through singing and dancing, and these performances are highly attended. Students at Brown often care more about guest speakers than athletic events, often lining up in the mail room 2 hours before tickets are released. The weekend at Brown often starts on Wednesday and continues to Saturday night. Fraternities and Sororities do exist, but the frat parties often have lines onto the quad most nights and these parties are often not free.

Solomon

Typically at Brown, the two most popular types of activities are the arts and political activism. Brown has the most a capella groups per capita than any other University in the US, and it shares a very close relationship with the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), which gives students access to courses at the design school. There are also many dance groups on campus that are all student-run, and the new Granoff Center for the creative arts has opened the way for students interested in acting and performance to further cultivate their interests. With regard to political activism, there are frequent protests on the main green that make a student sometimes feel like they are at Berkeley in the 1960's. Greek life does not have a very strong presence on campus, with only eight fraternities and two sororities on campus.

Ana

The largest student group by numbers on campus is probably the Queer Alliance, because it's composed of quite a few smaller groups. Other popular ones are the Brown Daily Herald (our newspaper) and all the sports teams and fraternities/literary societies/houses.

Brown students drink a lot and most of the social scene is dorm related. There is a definite campus bubble and it is easy to spend most of your time on college hill.

Jonathan

There are so many clubs that there will be one that will interest you. The dorms on campus are generally good for first years (all doubles, no bunk beds), but don't get much better. Most seniors live off-campus. Some of our dorms are in desperate need of renovation. The housing lottery will screw over a small part of the rising sophomore class into summer waitlist limbo where they won't know where they live until a week before the fall semester. The social life is what you make of it, you can party all you want if you want, or you can not. Greek organizations make up only 10{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body and don't drive the social life here, except on Spring Weekend and for first-years for the first few weeks of school.

Jimmy

House parties dominate the scene. The greek scene exists and can be fun, but is a joke compared to what greek life is like at "greek" schools. Athletic events are exciting when we're in the playoffs, but I never went to a single homecoming football game. Guest speakers are people like Gorbechev, Clinton, Nader, Scorsese--basically huge names and amazing learning opportunities. The dating scene is... non-existent. Everyone just sorta hooks up or ends up in relationships, but dating is doable if you put effort into it. 2am on a Tuesday I'm at the falafel truck, if it still exists, or hanging out with friends and chewing the fat, shooting pool at Phi Psi, or studying if there's an exam coming up. We party pretty much every weekend in some way shape or form, many events don't involve drinking. Saturday nights without drinking would be snacking on Thayer street, wandering downtown, laying around with friends in the dorm, playing intramural sports, or supporting friends at shows/concerts. Off campus has very good food and a great music scene. Most people spend the majority of their time on campus--for good reason. There's always something to do.

There are TONS of clubs/organizations on campus, and most first years are exposed to this either during the Activities Fair during ADOCH (A Day on College Hill) or their freshman orientation. This doesn't mean that you HAVE To choose what you want to do at those points, I'm going to be a sophomore in hte fall and I'm still trying to find a few activities that I'd really want to stick with. It's really easy to meet new people, especially during orientation, but it doesn't just stop there -- there's are just so many activities during the school year that you're bound to meet new people, which is great. I personally met my closest friends on the second day of school when I moved in and was finding someone's room. I looked inside one room and commented on the nice windows, haha, aaand now the people who live in that room are some of my best friends! I'm not so much into the party-scene, and didn't drink so much my freshman year. Frat parties are genreally held every weekend, but start dwindling during exam weeks, but then they go into full bloom especially when the frats are doing their rushing events during spring semester. I'd usually hang out with my friends on Friday / Saturday nights in their dorms, play board games, watch a movie, or just hang out. It's very possible and easy to find soemthing to do on a Saturday night that doesn't involve drinking. Other partying options include Fishco and Kurrents (both clubs) near Wickenden street. It's a bit of a walk but people usually go there on Thursday / Fridays. The biggest party weekend at Brown is definitely Spring Weekend-- for some people it's just an excuse to drink from Thurs-Sun and totally kill their liver, but usually a few bands come and perform, and it's just a whole lot of fun, especially when the weather is nice. Then everyone is so just laid back and chill :)

Steph

On weekend nights, lots of students (underclassmen in particular) go to events thrown by student groups (a cappella, improv, sketch comedy, theater....it's endless). Frats comprise only 10 percent of the student body, but their parties are also very important in the underclassmen social scene, even though the big parties charge an entrance fee.

Emily

I love Habitat, it's something I always wanted to do and the trips are a lot of fun and great experience, in Keeney doors were always open and it is an extremely sociable dorm where you could always wander around and find someone looking for company or time to kill, loved loved loved going to soccer games- men's team was awesome this past year and lots of school spirit, went to a few other games (football, tennis, hockey, etc.) which were fun but not as much, always concerts or lectures going on that are interesting and fun, downtown is great, bars are really lax with id's and where most of the weekend nights end and every wednesday at fish co is a good time, greek life if there but not prominent- def not necessary to join if its not your thing, they have parties that are usually ok, sports houses have better and are free entry and drinks unlike frats, themed parties=awesome

alex

Campus life is active, although parties are relatively tame. There are plenty of clubs and teams to participate in that provide an outlet for boredom. Greek life is slightly unconventional, being less rowdy than most schools.

Alex

All i have to say is that there is something for eveyone and that if your house, your place does not yet exisit, there is plently of land to build upon.

Alex

My main involvement at Brown was with the Alpha Delta Phi society, a coed literary Greek organization. We have tea parties weekly, and charity auctions to support literacy . Everything closes at 2AM by law, which totally blows. Some people party more than others. Its not the only way to be involved in Social life. You can be a social person at Brown and still go to bed at midnight.

Felipe

Brown has a lot of organizations, clubs, sports teams, and other group affiliations on campus, and they're always introduced to the students in the first week of school during orientation. The social life at Brown is extremely vibrant. In my first year, my whole floor and I got along really well, and all freshman dorms are broken up into units. These units are organized by a residential counselor, a womens peer counselor, and a minority peer counselor, whom are sophomores or above. They help you and keep the dorms organized, student-wise. Although theft was extant, it wasn't uncommon leaving your door open while in the room. Outside of dorms, it was hard not to meet new people every day, and cafeterias and events were prime for meeting new friends. Athletic events aren't as popular despite the huge school spirit, but like mentioned before, there's always something to do around campus, and you'll never really find yourself bored. There's a party essentially every weekend, and the dating scene is alive. I'd say it all depends on the person, but parties are great for meeting new people, haha! Fraternities and sororities, as well as the other themed houses, hold the majority of the parties. Going off-campus is also a popular decision, some 18+ clubs are open on Wednesdays and Fridays, and, of course, the weekend.

Michelle

Greek life is not that big (about 10-15{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students join, I believe), but I decided to "go Greek" and I love it! The people all have diverse interests and talents, and aren't there to just sit around all day and party.

Tate

Theater is GREAT here. Some weekends there are 3+ shows going up and you have you to struggle to see them all. You will always have a way to be involved in whatever you want. You have plenty of opportunities to get good experience onstage or off. There is a little division between the musical theater/mainstage kids and the ones who do more student-produced stuff, but still... Whatever you're looking for, Brown's got it. You could be in 6+ shows a year. Granted, you'd be running yourself ragged, but it's for the sake of the art, right? If you're just into seeing shows, then you will have your pick. Most of it's free and the rest of it is cheap (under $10). Don't forget all the comedy groups on campus. Some of them are pretty darn good. A cappella is a big presence on campus, or at least it feels that way to me because I'm in a group. There are eight main groups, along with a few other specialty ones. They're hard to get into, even for talented singers. They provide great entertainment year-round, often a mix between music and comedy. Frats are minimal, but just enough for people who don't throw their own parties. There are multiple events going on any weekend. You can either pay cover or pay for drinks. It's usually a hit or miss kind of scene, and you'll want to hop from place to place as the night goes on. People mostly party Wednesday-Saturday. W & Th are more nights for the two main clubs (Kurrents and Fish Co). Drinking is not a must. I don't drink, but consider myself quite social. You can go out to parties / clubs, but probably will want to leave before people start falling over around you. There are all kinds of non-drinking events. The university has a "late night fund" that sponsors 'dry' events. Go to them! They are fun and a great way to meet people. Brown also has quite active ballroom and swing dancing clubs. Some people compete, and a lot more take lessons and go to weekly social dances.

Harper

I met one of my best friends at the activities fair the third or fourth day at Brown. It was orientation week and she said, "I like your purse," and then we started talking and we've been friends ever since. I usually meet good friends through other close friends. There are pretty much always the same people or familiar faces at the parties I go to. At 2 AM on a Tuesday night, if I were awake (which I probably would be), depending on my workload I'd either be drinking wine with 2 or 3 close friends, or writing a paper and studying. There are several activities at Brown. I am part of the Brown Relaxation Project (trained to give back rubs to students and faculty at organized events), Brown Concert Agency, and WORD! (Brown's spoken word group). You can definitely find something you like. There are also a lot of groups for your ethnicity/nationality. For example, there's a half asian club called "HAPA" and there's also the Filipino Alliance (FA). It's easy to get off campus. You can either walk, jump in a car, ride a bike, take a taxi... You can also use your Brown ID Card for free transportation via bus and trolly.

Dani

There is everything, everything, everything as far as the social scene goes at Brown. There are always frat parties, dorm parties, organizations or clubs throwing galas or parties. There is always a play or an a capella show. There are concerts almost all the time, especially downtown, and there are several bars basically on campus or within a 15 minute walk. And you can party any night of the week, although heaviest partying is from Wednesday (Fishco nights) through Sunday. While the partying probably doesnt reach the "wild" level of a state school, our parties never get broken up, no matter how big they get it seems. While my friends and I do drink, and I definitely partied very hard before coming to Brown, I've found that there is simply SO, so much to do around here at nights that I actually don't end up drinking every weekend and still have the best time. In the middle of the week there are always events going on - from guest lecturers to film screenings, from food festivals to self-help sessions - you'll never not have something to do.

Rich

There is a great array of extracuriculars open to all people. definitely important to have an interest in being engaged in the community to really get the most out of it. A large healthy portion of the campus drinks not at all or lightly on weekends, so numerous activities are always available from performances to dances to hanging out with friends. Greek life plays a small role, but is there and available for students who want it.

jess

yes we are an ivy league school. no we are not all nerds. brown offers tons of activities to do that does not involve an all-nighter in the scili. there are clubs and teams for everything imaginable; and those that do not exist are just waiting for the next leader to create them. there is a fun bar scene, but that does not mean that you have to drink to have a good time. trivia night is popular among the students where drinking is not the main focus of the night. spring week(end) is also epic here. in short, here the deal is work hard, play hard. while trying to change the world here, students also know when its time to kick back and have fun.

Jenna

There are lots of student groups to join. There are club sports too. There is an activities fair where the clubs and activities at brown come together and show what they have to offer. Go to that! I haven't tap danced in 4 years and I luckily brought my tap shoes to Brown; I went to the fair and found an awesome tap dancing group called What's on Tap?. Athletic events are fun to go to. The athletes at Brown play a sport to represent the school and spend many many hours doing that sport - go show your school and fellow classemates some pride! There is a social life at Brown, even though we are "nerds". There are frat parties and parties at the athletic houses. People are really open and friendly, so you can walk into someones room, if the door is open, and talk for a bit and become friends!

Victoria

There are a few sororities on campus as well as frats. I am in a sorority. They are great. There are also off campus ones. If you are awake at 2 am on a tuesday, you ought to be studying because everything is closed. Yes students leave their doors open but not me. Athletic events are very popular. People party a lot..it is excercizing in pretty clothes. Last week end I was watching movies in my room. There are a lot of activities that do not involve drinking.. i mean A LOT!!!and you are guaranteed to have fun. I go to the mall a lot!! and to the restaurants downtown.

Brett

Brown has a rich mixture of activities that are particularly strong in dance and a cappella. Drama here is quite good as well, and the art department seems very strong. If one really wants, one can really find a huge amount of activities to while away the extra time they have from taking that fourth class pass/fail.

Reese

I have no idea what is the most popular activity here. I would say organized protest lol.

Jerry

Make your own club or join one. Anything goes at this university, from pole dancing clubs to improvisation music clubs (where they take regular toys and turn them into instruments) to your jock-filled football team - we've got it all.

Emily

Brown has so many varsity and club athletic teams. Athletes do not just hang out with themselves, but they definitely become close with their teammates. THere are 5 frats, which throw parties, and 2 sororities. Greek life isn't huge, which many pledges like because it doesn't consume their life but is a good way to make friends. usually on weekends, my friends and I go to dorm or house parties, maybe a frat party, and usually end up at a bar. Very easy to use fake IDs. Theater is great. Many guest speakers, but mostly liberal.

Caitlin

Brown Democrats are one of the biggest student groups on campus, but there is a group for everyone out there, from student radio to tae kwon do, to ARR the pirate a capella group. It's awesome. There's usually stuff to do on weekends, from our late-night non-drinking fund which sponsors activities like contra dance, board game tournaments and nail painting, to frat-sponsored parties with nasty-ass "punch" and loud hip-hop. Improv groups and a Capella groups perform, there's a lot of student-run theater too, which is always good. Basically there is a place for everyone here, and whatever interest you have, there is probably a group for it. If not, you can make one.

Eliza

Brown gets lots and lots of guest speakers (some really great ones, and some not so great) - there is something for everyone. There isn't as much school spirit as I would like, but there is still a decent attendance at major sporting events. The dating scene is a bit odd. It seems as though students are either 'married' or just hooking up drunkenly. Few in between, though it can happen. I met my closest friends in my freshman unit, and also through my boyfriend. Social life is good. If you want to party, you can ALWAYS find one, either off campus or on. Brown sponsors some pretty raucous parties throughout the year. There's also stuff to do if you don't drink - movie screenings, theatre, games with your friends, club sports, study breaks (lots of free food!), guest speakers, etc...

Rory

the social life is quite good here. a lot of frat parties on weekends and if that's not your scene then there are a few bars in Providence or clubs in NYC and Boston which are not too far away. Students here usually stay up late as work takes forever to do since you're always chatting with your friends.

Ben

Many people find freshman year to be the best opportunity for making new friends. Brown Band and BOLT are just two activities I'm involved in that have helped me network at Brown - activities are the best way to make new friends, especially because your freshman "unit" will not exist, even in spirit, beyond freshman year. People party as much or as little as they want, especially because the university isn't out to turn over its students to the cops. If you have a bad drinking night and get taken away by EMS, you won't get in trouble, even if you are underage (the first time). Most people like to drink with their close friends on the weekends, although the frats, sororities, and program houses throw large parties every weekend. Brown has a sizable population of stoners, too, and the administration generally looks the other way when it comes to pot. Spring Weekend at Brown is simply epic: everyone comes out for the concerts, drinks and smokes openly in public, and gets to have a good time before Reading Week begins. Social life at Brown, for most people, is very enjoyable.

Michael

The clubs are great, there are a lot of them, and they're really really fun. People are pretty friendly. THERE IS NO DATING SCENE. If you don't illegally imbibe substances, you don't get to hook up with the wasted strangers, and if you don't hook up with the wasted strangers, then you're either one of the cute little Asian people in sub-free (awkwardly holding hands with one of the other ones!) or utterly alone. I met my closest friends because they live across the hall. We smoke pot pretty much EVERY DAY. We are by far not alone, but we are still clearly in the minority there. Most people wait until Thursday to start the weekend, but once it starts, IT FUCKING STARTS. Last weekend...I can't remember anything about last weekend. It was 4/20. Duh.

Gabi

Athletic events are not popular with the general student body, but the athletes form their own community where they support each other. Guest speakers are always very popular and there is usually one big name on campus per week talking to a packed auditorium. People as party as often as they want, you can find a party almost any day of the week. You have to put an effort to escape parties on Fridays and Saturdays. Very active theatre department with some sort of production running every week and oftentimes overlapping.

Tate

What are the most popular groups/organizations/clubs/teams on campus? There are frats, sports teams, a cappella groups, minority groups etc. Brown has like 1000 student organizations or something · Do students in dorms leave their doors open? Mostly · How popular are athletic events? Not popular enough!! Brown should have more school spirit. Go Bears! Guest speakers? Theater? Yes and yes! This semester only we've had Spike Lee, Martin Scorsese, Tom Brokow and Evo Morales (President of Bolivia). There are always some theater production going on, they're quite good· Tell us about the dating scene. You mean the hook-up scene. I don't really want to · How did you meet your closest friends? In class · If you’re awake at 2am on a Tuesday, what are you doing? Studying. I mean, it's a Tuesday. If you said Wednesday I'd say FishCo · What traditions/events happen each year? Spring Weekend, SexPowerGod, Starf*ck, 4-20, Relay for Life, probablly a lot more that I can't remember · How often do people party? There's something going on every night. On weekends usually a lot going on · How important are fraternities/sororities? Not as much as in other schools. But they're there · What did you do last weekend? Lacrosse game, two parties, some work · What can you do on a Saturday night that doesn’t involve drinking? Work at the library, movies, shows, there's always something going on not everyone drinks at Brown (although most people do) · What do you do off campus? Tutor in the public library and in a school. Go to the mall. Shop on Thayer st. Go to clubs and bars downtown and on Wickenden st. Take long walks. Waterfire.

Gregory

Like most schools there are numerous groups on campus ranging from Brown Democrats to gospel choir. I'm on the Brown Ski team, which tends to be like a group of brothers. We go up in January to a mountain in New Hampshire, and live in a house together and ski every day. In general, friends are easy to come by at Brown. Kids leave their doors open all the time, and friends always just walk in. It sometimes makes doing work difficult, but if I have work I really need to get done, I just go to the library. The dating scene is present, but not over present. Basically, you can theoretically get whatever you want. If you go to parties, the girls there will run the entire spectrum. Most parties are at frats, but Brown frats are not like animal house, and tend to be pretty mundane. Not everyone drinks either. You can go to a party and not drink, or you can go out to dinner, or around Providence on a Saturday and just chill with friends.

Tessie

There are two kinds of people on campus: the athletes and the non-athletes. At least, that is how it feels sometimes. The sports here are DI, and it is a big commitment on top of trying to handle an Ivy-League education, but the people are amazing and it is well-worth the experience. Beyond that, people in general know how to have fun. even without drinking. There are always plays and a capella performances to do on the weekend. Both my roommate and I don't drink, and we always have fun when we go out dancing.

Maria

Work hard, play hard seems to be the motto here. Students definitely study and get their work done, but they also know how to kick back and have a good time. The weekend starts on Wednesday night, since there are bar specials in Providence. There are frats and sororities on campus, but they don't rule the social scene. Only about 10{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students are involved in one. Brown has so many different clubs, activities and intramural sports teams that there is easily at least 5 clubs that any person would be interested in.

Natasha

Everyone is involved in so many different things, I think that it would be difficult to say what the "popular" extracurriculars are. Everyone is pretty friendly, and the party/social scene is nothing to complain about -- there's something for everyone. The guest speakers here are great! Last week, we had Spike Lee, and last night, we had Tom Brokaw. Those are probably the best attended events. People don't really care too much about athletics, except as opportunities to tailgate. People party Wednesday through Sunday... work hard, play hard. About 13{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students are in the greek scene; it's not huge. Dating is practically nonexistent. You're either hooking up randomly, or in a serious relationship.

Royce

i'm a fraternity pledge so some of the kids I'm around tend to party a lot more often than the average Brown student. fraternity scene isn't huge, but is visible and fun. athletic events aren't too popular. guest speakers are great (spike lee, valerie plame, tom brokaw, scorcese...all just this year). spring week(end) is amazing...everyone goes all out. there are plenty of dance shows and other performances to attend for entertainment if not partying.

Andy

-you honestly don't have to drink to do something over the weekend though it helps -our student government is kind of a joke -we get really good speakers on a wide range of topics: it's up to you to find out when and where they'll be -parties start as early as wednesday or thursday night -the naked donut run gives people donuts during reading period before exams: probably one of the most "liberal" things about brown

Kristin

Dating sucks. people don't date. athletes pretty much hook up with athletes. You can always find someone to do something with, or attend any event on campus. I have done everything from athletic events to plays to frat parties and speakers and enjoyed all of them. I drink a lot. and I have lots of fun. I sit in the library all day so i can go out whenever i want. like a monday to play trivia against my friends at a local bar. my best friends lived on my hall freshman year.

Alex

As a straight-edge, I was concerned that the campus would be a social mismatch. Yet, You can engage or disengage from those things as much as you like. Frat membership is around 10{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} with a far lower sorority percent. So they play a role in the campus life without dominating it like at Penn where closer to 35{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of men rush. The transfers really add to the Brown experience. The campus has tons of activities everyday. If you were to take full advantage of the activities, you would have to lighten your academic load or your sleep. To make the most of your Brown experience, you must be open to new experiences and perspectives (socially outgoing is a plus too). Brown is what you make of it. If you want to go to a hockey game, call your friends and get them out of the library for a bit. Most people are quite happy.

Jonathon

Im involved in MEZCLA, the best goddamn performing arts group at Brown.

Tristan

Students leave their door opens since it is encouraged by the RCs.

Jacquelyn

In my own experience, most of the social events that I go to are hosted by athletic teams/ former athletes. Social options are very open, and I had a wonderful freshman year spent mainly with friends in my freshman dorm.

Emily

Brown does a fabulous job of hosting interesting and accomplished speakers, there is always someone speaking on pretty much any topic. The dorm life is great, there are dorms on campus that are more known for different things, like partying or quiet, etc. but anywhere you are you have independence and freedom to move. On a Saturday night, you can go to a movie on Thayer St., go out to dinner on Federal Hill which is delicious Italian food, go to the mall.

Emily

dorm doors usually stay open and people congregate in halls or common areas to drink, watch movies, hang out. athletic events are somewhat attended, football probably the most so. there are tons of guest speakers and theater shows. people can party all throughout the week usually and the scene varies from bars on thayer street to house parties to cocktails at frats. off campus, the mall is very close and there are great restaurants. a few bars, like mcfaddens and rira are popular and kids like to eat on wickeden street where the sushi restaurants are b.y.o.b.

Alex

Dorm doors are always open, and people in dorms always become friends. Dance groups are very popular and so are fraternity parties.

Andrea

frats and sororities are not a big deal at all. there are two main bars on thayer street - liquid and spats, and then one main club named viva. sometimes a lot of people dont go out due to school work or home work

Tristan

Athletic events are popular when we are winning. Spring Week(end) is the best time for socail interation. It's the total bacchanailan 3-7 days (depending on how much of a partier you are) of concerts and parties.
