What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Dear Past Self, All four years of high school you were wishing and planning for college. You have stressed yourself out to no end by the end of senior year. My advice to you is to stop worrying about the future to the extent you do. Life only comes once and time is a precious blessing, but unfortunatly is also a curse. Take your time with the future. Live in the present. College will come and as exciting as it is, it is only going to be what you make it. There are opportunities thrown your way, day after day. It is your responsibility to take them. Please take them. Do NOT let experiences slip through your fingers. Be alert and alive for it all. Your dorm bed and surrounding walls may be just a little bit comfortable, but step outside of that comfort. Everyone is in the same boat, so stop overthinking everything. Take a chance and get lunch with someone new. Building relationships with people is one of the most important aspects of college. Friends will help you adjust. Learn to love life and college will be amazing. Sincerely, Your future, much more wise, Self.

The most valuable thing that I have learned during my college experience is to incorporate the things that I value in to every aspect of life, including my academic work. Working towards personal goals is key to mantaining a possitive attuditude and completing work effectively. When I was in high school I didn't realize how much of an impact my mind-set had on achieving my goals. It was during my time at college that I began to see myself really excel in the work that I was passionate about. I also found I had a difficult time moitavting myself for assignments that I thought were irrelevant to my personal values. My advice would be to incorporate my passions and personal interests into as may areas of my school work as possible, including projects, assignments, and ectra curricular activies. I believe if you spend the majority of your time doing things that your value you will be both happier and more productive.

Linda

Always keep your door open, some of the best social moments were completely impromptu as someone was walking by. Join theatre right off the bat, and keep going.

Cabrini has just been the most perfect school for me. Everything is just right. The campus is absolutely beautiful and is what sold me on Cabrini in the first place. The only word I can think to perfectly describe its campus is nature. Woodsy areas surround the campus and wildlife is seen most every day. Countless amounts of deer and turkey roam the campus and it's awesome for someone like me who grew up loving the outdoors. Another wonderful thing about the location of Cabrini is that we are only twenty-five minutes away from the city of Philadelphia. This is great for internships, class trips, and other important academic experiences. I took a history class and we learned a lot about the history of the city and it was great to just hop on a train and see everything we had just learned about. Another important part of my experience was the opportunties available to become involved at Cabrini. I tried so many different things this past year, it was wonderful! I'm now an orientation leader, ambassador for the school and I also help out with CAP Board and student activities.

Through my experience at Cabrini College i have made special bonds with new people, being friends as well as factuly. In being a psychology major i have been able perform multiple research studies using my own research and analyzing my own data. This will certainly help me for graduate school and for any future job that i may have. Also, at Cabrini College faculty and staff strive to help students to succeed. Professors are approachable and are always available for any help that a student may need. In addition to this students are able to form a personal and close relationship with their professors throughout their time at Cabrini College due to the fact that Cabrini is a smal school and classrooms are rather small. Having professors who care about you as an individual and are always available to help their students succeed are valuable qualities that Cabrini College is proud to have.

If i could return to the past and warn myself about college i would not change to much. I would tell myself to prepare early foe college financially since i feel that i was not ready for the burden. I would also tell myself to have fun and meet new people. I would also say work hard and stay motivated because there are many thing that may distract you. i would also say have fun and enjoy your time.

Elizabeth

Not to worry college is honestly what you make of it. If you want to be lazy and fail then that is what will happen. If you choose to make a difference and work hard at Cabrini you can do extraordinary things!

Bridget

If I were able to go back in time and talk to myself as a highschool senior, I would not tell myself anything different than I told myself then: just breathe -- and everything will be okay; everything happens for a reason. I firmly believe that I chose Cabrini College for a reason and it has benefitted me in numerous ways, especially because it is known for elementary and special education majors, which I am majoring in. I appreciaite the opportunity that Cabrini offers in regard to student teacher at such an early age. The advisors, students, coaches and professors are extremely approachable and more than willing to go out of their way to assist me, especially my advisor and coach. I feel confident in knowing that I am a senior and will be graduating in due time; I feel that I will be able to make a difference in the schools in a positive manner. The teaching theories and approaches are more modern, which I feel is also to the students' benefit. The material, classroom management techniques and experiences of my peers are also reassuring in knowing that I am capable and will make a difference to students.

Angela

Always stay focused no matter what you are going through.

Elizabeth

Stand up for yourself and your belifs, and don't feel pressured to be a part of anything you are uncomfortable with. College is everything that you make of it.

Steven

Make sure that whatever college you go to they offer what you want academically, socially and you will stay there for the entire college experience. I went to college for an education and to play sports but I knew that if I decided not to play sports that I would stay at the school. Last fall I broke my ankle and was unable to play lacrosse but still participated and had a great time in school with my friends and studies. I found out that I did not want to go to Med School but wanted to go to Pharmacy school and my instructors are helping me achieve that goal. I am graduatingin 3 years instead of 4 thanks to the Professors at college who have helped me along the way. Make the most of your college education in all aspects and you will never regret your decision to attend the college you have chosen

Aisling

There are two colleges out there; one where you see different kids everyday on your way to class or seeing familiar faces and knowing people on campus on your way to class.

Meagen

Before deciding on what college is right for you, make sure you decide based on how well you think your education will be and how well your choice will prepare you for the steps following college. Going to a school based on the number of parties they have and whether or not your friends are going there are not good reasons for deciding on a school. A college should be a place where you feel comfortable in your own skin, can get your work done, and be surrounded by people who are striving to reach their goals like you. Be careful which school you choose and why, because the decision you make will influence the rest of your life.

To find the right college for you, visit different campuses. Finding a college is like finding a place to live. It needs to feel like "home". When visiting a campus, you need to find out what size the classses are, if they offer your major, what extracurricular activies are available, what transportation do you have access to, and what is the graduation/job ratio. Talk to people on campus. Ask what they like about the school. You need to remember that you are not just learning in the classroom. College is about learning about life and who you are and what you want to become . The right college will help you become the best you.

Chris

When applying for schools consider if each has a special emphasis on any area. Whether its sports, service, or religion if the school places a focus on a certain area it is likely to affect many other aspects. Be sure you enjoy and support what the school supports or you may feel left out.

justin

You can never look at too many schools and when you do ask the students how they like the school.

Charles

FInd one that you can call home, have fun but dont go to class drunk, you can not do homework better wiith a buzz, just be responsible and rember why you are there ...

Lauren

College is the the time when you learn to be independent. Do not run home when times get tough. Be tough and push through your battles. Make new friends, learn new information, and live a life of your own. At my school most students went home on the weeekends, I lived six hours from home. I was the only one left on campus over the weekends. Find a school with a diverse population. Make sure most students are from out of state. Your true college experience comes from what you learn through living on a campus. It is your first look at a society run by your peers. Make what you want of it, and never forget it.

Marie

My advice to parents and students who are seeking the perfect college is simple. When you walk onto the campus, you should feel like you are at home. This is the place that you are going to live at for the next 4 years, and it should be accomodating to your every need. You should be able to express yourself freely and comfortably. Talk to current students, faculty and staff. Make sure you are able to relate to them. If you look for these few things in a a college, the experience will be one you will never forget. Get involved, volunteer, and learn as much as you can--afterall, you are paying to be there. Most importantly--relax and enjoy!

Laura

You need to look beyond the prestige and the reputation of a school and find a place where you feel comfortable calling home for the next 4 years, with a school that has what you need and offers the support you need. For some people that might be a small school where the professor knows your name and what kind of student you are, and for others it might be a place where you can get lost in the crowd and learn on your own. College is about finding out and developing the person you are, not who you were in your past, not what you did, nor what people expected you to be. Find out what you're passionate about and go after it!

Nikole

Every college has something different to offer so do your research, visit schools and pick a school that matches you in all aspects. Ask yourself the following questions: What do I want to major in? Do I want to go to a small school or a larger school? How far am I willing to travel? Do I want to be a resident or a commuter? What is the college's reputation? How technologically advanced is the the campus? Once you choose a school, stay focused and don't procrastinate! You are the one ultimately paying for college so get the most out of your experience! Good luck!

Kara

The right college has to do with where you see yourself. Do you feel comfortable on campus? Does it feel like your home away from home? When I found my school, I knew it was a perfect fit. My college experience I wouldn't give up for the world because it really made me who I am today. My career and all of my job experience found me because of the school that I chose. Make sure to get involved in the college community because you only have four years. There is no experience like college that we are able to participate in. Find your home away from home with the right college for you.

Meghan

Deciding on the right college is not a decision that should be taken lightly. There are many things that need to be taken into consideration. First, consider the location of the school. Students need to explore the college?s surrounding area; deciding whether it is comfortable to them. Students must consider if the distance is adequate enough to meet their comfort level. Academics and extra-curricular activities go hand in hand with being successful and well-rounded. Students should consider the strength of the program they intend to major in. Also, the school?s extra-curricular activities should meet the student?s desire. Such activities can take one?s mind off of academics, helping one release their energy and frustration. Find a campus that encourages students to go out and get involved in the campus community. Being actively involved on the college campus ensures that you are happy by encouraging sociability, a major part of the college experience. College campuses are exceptionally diverse. Taking advantage of diversity expands one?s knowledge; gaining experience for the real world. When students make the most of their college experience, they become prepared for their career in the real world.

When looking at colleges, do not choose somewhere because your friends or significant other goes there. Visit as many colleges as you can. You will know the right one when you visit it. You will have a feeling that you do not get at any other school. You won't be able to explain the feeling, but you will know right away. Also, become involved during your college years. From my experience, the people who are unhappiest are the ones who do not get involved. It is an easy way to make friends and have fun.

Sabina

Visit all tyoes of schools. Make sure you get a tour at the school and look at all parts of the school. Also to the parents: do not nag your kids about getting college applications done. We know that they have to get done and we know that this is an important process. Nagging us just pushes us further away from doing what you want us to do.

Kayli

Dear Prospective Students, Enjoy your college experience because it will go by faster than you think. Some students think college is all about getting drunk and forgetting about classes, but it's not. You are here to get a great education and to do something with your life. So before you go and drink that keg of beer or take a shot of that vodka, think of your parent's money that is being spent on you drinking away your college education. You might as well just stay home if you are going to do that. So have fun!!! You can have a beer every now and then or on the weekends if you are of age, but don't do it on the weeknights when you have class the next morning. Being in college is to get the whole college experience, to get a good education, to somewhat party and live on campus and meet friends that you might have for the rest of your life. So enjoy it, but not to the extent to where you don't remember what you did last night!!!! Do your homework too!!! Good Luck!!! and remember HAVE FUN!!!

Sarah

Pick a college in a place you like. As for me I looked for a school just far enough away from home to drive a few hours, so that I could be home for a family event or just wanting to get away for a weekend. I also looked for a small campus I could not see myself in a lecture hall with 200 other students. This campus is rual and located in a very nice little city just a few minutes outside of Philadelphia. As most students and families do, I panic everytime I complete a student aid form and think is graduate school even possible.

Miguel

A student should feel comfortable with the school. If a student feels out of place all the time this will impact on them making friends and it will impact the most important thing which is their school work. Parents and students should visit the school in order to see if the right place for them both academically and socially.

Kallyn

When I looked at schools, class sizes and greek life certainly played a large part in my decision making process. I love how small my class sizes are - more interpersonal with faculty, etc - and I love that there is no greek life here on campus.

Shannon

When you're in the process of applying for colleges, the best thing to do is to visit colleges. Visit as many as you want; there's no penalty. Think about what you really want in your college. Some questions to consider are as follows. Do you want to live at home or away? Do you want a more academic or social atmosphere? When you visit colleges, ask the students there because they will tell you the truth. Choose what you want your major to be and eliminate colleges that don't offer that major. Don't just settle for the first college that accepts you and if getting money for college is important to you then negotiate with the college. When you're finally at school, make sure you take advantages of the opportunities they offer you. Making friends is a big part of experiencing college so put yourself out there and let people in. Join activiites you're interested in and get internships because ultimately the reason you're there is your career. College is a very significant chapter in your life so make the best of it because you only get one shot.

Jennifer

Don't go for the most expensive college, unless you can help your child pay.

tara

Be determined to go to school to learn, the fun will follow but focus on your studies and do not get too far behind. Also find the school that you will be happy at, don't just go there because of a boy or because of friends.

Samantha

The most important piece of advice for finding the right college is to know what makes the student feels comfortable. To make the most of the college experience the student should put themselves "out there". Make friends, join clubs and organizations, and generally keep up with the current events of the college.

Dana

Sit down with your child and have them imagine themselves on a college campus. Is it big or small? are the classes big or small? are there frats or sororoities? is it in a rural, urban, or suburban setting? how far away from home is it? what is their intended major? what kind of sports do they see themselves playing or watching? Take the list of answers and find the right college.
