College is not like high school with a bunch of cliques and stereotypes. Much of your friend base is from your freshman dorm and what clubs you're involved with. If you're willing to meet new people and be friendly, you're guaranteed to make friends as everyone is welcoming.
"poly-dollys" =snobby, selfish, blonde barbie dolls frat boys-always wear the "bro" tanks
I would say we have a lack of diversity at my school. The students have this stereotype of being smart, especially since the majority of our students are focused in science and math. The sad stereotype is my school tends to be seen as just white. There is very little diversity and minority groups are not represented. And for those minority groups that are on campus, they are seen as either Asian nerds or African-American athletes.
A lot of students think that the engineering students at Cal Poly don't have time to be social or have a life outside of school. While engineering students often are busy with schoolwork there are plenty of engineers that get out and enjoy themselves and are involved on campus.
A common stereotype of students at Cal Poly, SLO is that a large part of the population is "cowboys." I would say that although there are probably more agriculture students than at most other colleges, it is by no means a majority of the population. The agriculture students are just one part of huge Cal Poly student community.
Stereotypically, Poly students are conservative white kids, a mix of nerdy engineering guys, shallow hot girls and ag kids. Since being here, I can see where the stereotypes come from; we are a mostly white school, so although every ethnicity is represented, if you see ethnic diversity as being an important part of your college experience you may want to look for a different school. However, the type of people that come here are a lot more diverse than what our reputation lets on – the campus is kind of dominated by nerds, aggies and an astounding number of blonde pretty girls and bros, but it seems that everyone is able to find a place to fit in. There are frat kids, hipsters, geeks, cowboys, theatre kids, churchies, stoners, musicians... pretty much a little something for everyone. I will say that it is a fairly conservative school, but as a liberal thinker I have not had any trouble finding people who share my views.
Engineers, Business, and Agricultural majors all fit into their own stereotypes. It is a lot different than high school, people are categorized by their majors and tend to socialize more with people in their majors. Engineers are more of the geeks, although some of them are pretty awesome. Business majors tend to party A LOT and never seem to have class on Fridays. Agricultural majors often wear cowboy boots and hats to class and all seem to have huge trucks.
I can't really think of any stereotypes that go with Cal Poly... We are a pretty good school all around (especially for some of our engineering programs like Civil Engineering). The school has a pretty good distribution of men and women (although the majority of women are not in engineering majors).
