What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Nestor

Entering a 4 year university is going to a big change for you and what you need to work on is your time management. You are going to meet someone in a month and you will start a relationhip with her which will change you as a person. Things are going to get more time consuming. You are also going to be part of the greek system, which will also keep you busy. You will have to focus on time manange from going to school full-time, working full-time, participtaing in the organization and spending time with your girlfriend. It is going to be hard but priorities things that are important. First, school is the most improtant because after you graduate you are going to be interested in attending Grad school, Second, the girlfriend is going to help you grow as a person and you will find love with her, but also know when you need to move on. Third, work even though it is the income you get don't worry so much about it. Finally, the organization will develop long term friendships, who are always going to be there for you. Make decisions for yourself!

The advice I would give would be as follows: Don't wait to go to college. The longer you wait, the harder it is to go back, because you will put other priorities ahead of school. Take the time and put in the effort to get as many scholarships as you can. don't think you can just breeze by in school. You need to study and work hard to get good grades in order to fulfill your dreams.

If I could give advice to my high school senior self, it would be to have confidence. That is one thing I wish I'd had back then. Though I did have hope for the future, I didn't have much belief in what I wanted to do or that it would even work out. Moreover, I hadn't yet realized that I would need to set the goals that I truly wanted, outside of others' influence. I wish that I, as a high school senior, had put more faith in my own ability to handle the elements that would affect my future - I spent a lot of time hiding or stifling my biggest dreams for fear of others thinking that they would be too extravagent. When I reached college I started to learn the reality of things; that my initial "goals" truly weren't a good fit for me. Though I had support from others in the prospect of accomplishing them, I didn't have the passion for them within myself. So, I changed my path. College is when I took control of my life. I wish my high school self had believed that I could.

I owuld tell myself not to stress out as much. College work may be more difficult than high school but just applying oneself gives you all the materials for success. Also, don't worry about being away from friends and fmaily, you can always call them or use video chat. As well, meeting new people up here is easy, especially while being involved on campus so there will never be dull moment in college.

Let yourself explore every chance you get in extra curricular activities and scholarly activities. It will help you in the long run and in the short term.

I haven't been at Northridge long, but I already have come to appreciate the large diversity and and amount of knowledge that is available to me. Having always lived in California I have always been surrounded by diversity, but at Northridge I have access to it 24/7 seven days a week. You will never have a class her full of one race, ethnicity, or gender. Being at northridge I also notice that there is information everywhere about everything. Whether your in a classroom or roaming around on campus, there are always oppurtunities to learn something. The teachers are great, the people are great, and the weather is great; what more could a person ask for?

From my college experience I have gotten a chance to actually take charge of my learning. I have gotten the opertunity to meet people, professors, and friends who I will never forget for as long as I live. I have read books, seen films, heard concepts, and been utterly moved by things I never would have even heard about in a different school. I have gotten a chance to live in the wonderous Northwest, a place where I will most likely spend the rest of my life. I have gotten an edge on the competition in the field of Nursing, which I plan to a proud member of, because I have gotten tailored by classes to teach me what I need to be the greatest nurse possible. And I have the honor of calling the Evergreen State College my college and my home; And I value that most of all.

Brittany

I've gotten a sense of pride and confidence as far as being a full time student. College is so much different from high school, and better in so many ways. I've gotten the joy of wanting to study, and the pleasure to meet great people. I have the freedom to make my own decisions and learn to live with them. I've learned the value of a dollar, most of all. I come from a single parent home, and my mother was layed off recently. Money is something that I thoroughly understand moreso now than before, luckily. By attending college, I'm saving more money than I would be if I were still at home living with my mom. I've made friendships that has built me to be a better person. I joined organizations that I have great value for such as American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, and the National Society of Black Engineers. This experience so far has been surreal, and this scholarship will continue to keep me in school, and reach my untimate goals.

After being laid off from my career in banking of 10 years due to outsourcing, I took an interest inwater quality after watching a documentary. To my suprise the best school in the country for water and wastewater science techonology was right in my back yard here in Colorado. After taking tours on my own to a water and a wastewater treatment plant, I talked to the head of the program at Red Rocks Community College here in Lakewood, CO. I was very impressed and enrolled into introductory classes followed by hydraulics and calculations classes. I have gained a lot of knowledge about the water industry in my last two semesters while pursuing an Applied Science degree. I have formed several new friendships through attended college that I would have never had the oppurtunity to meet. Several of us meet together to outside of class in the pursuit of gaining more knowledge by attending seminars that will lead to full time employment in this very interesting and exiting field. Had I never been laid off, I would have never given a thought about returning to college and pursuing a very valuble skillset that will benefit society as a whole.

Amber

It has been valuable to attend college I have gotten self awareness out of my college experience. I have learned to be a responsible young adult and being able to handle my obligations without the help of my parents. I have realized that I have to take school seriously and not get sidetracked by a partying, which is why I took Friday classes to keep myself busy. The professors that I had so far were great because they were there to assist me and wanted to pass the class with a better understanding of what the class was about. I love living on my own because I get to learn more about myself and set my own expectations for life and learn how to deal with other people like roommates and floor mates. I also learned who my real friends are and who just befriended me just for their personal needs. In general my first semester of college has been an experience because I’ve gone through so much but also gained valuable life lessons that I need throughout college and my career path.

College was a time when many experiences and responsibilities were learned. I learned that prioritizing and time management is very important. As a freshman undergraduate student, I felt I was invinsible being away from my parents and finally having control of my own life. I will embarassingly admit that my priortize weren't straight at the time. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from University of Northern Colorado, I found a job working with Dietitians in a hospital. I enjoyed meeting patients and it gave me a self-fulfillment in helping and caring for others. The desire of wanting to have more interaction and communication with patients made me decide to go back to school to become a nurse. Having to go back to school and have a second chance for a new career is very important to me. This time around, I have the motivation to get exceptional grades and am focused in acheiving my goal of becoming a nurse. This scholarship will greatly help me financially in reaching this goal and minimize the amount of student loans I already am paying from my undergraduate degree.

I've grown up in a middle class family, an only child, mommy and daddy always here for me, so I've been EXTREMELY sheltered. College hasn't turned me into a party animal or anything, but it's made me more independent. I went to college away from my hometown, away from my parents, away from my friends that I've known all my life and basically had to start over. It was hard at first, freshman depression and all, but after I was able to move past it, I realized I'm much happier being on my own and independent. I'm home now for Christmas break and it just feels so strange to me to be that little daughter again instead of the young adult I'm becoming. Bottom line: college gives young adults the confidence they need to grow and succeed in life. :)

Being I third-year at Cal State Northridge, I feel more prepared to enter the business workplace with each semester. When I was a freshman, I had no idea what I wanted to do and decided to major in Business Adminsitration, since it seemed to be the most practical and broad option. I quickly became more aware of my options when I joined a co-ed professional fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi, that was exclusive to business majors and learned how to stregthen my professional skills and expand my social network. Being involved Delta Sigma Pi and going by my college's academic plan, I've finally decided to choose an emphasis in Business Law. I am also employed on campus to work in my college's internship office, where I assist in helping my supervisor secure internships for students. My boss has also been an invaluable resource by helping me find internships, as well and providing advisement on my career plan. Right now, I'm preparing to take the LSAT and hopefully get into law school by next year. All in all, Cal State Northridge has given me confidence and a noteworthy experience to discover my opportunities.

Jade

From my experience with college, the experience gain with knowledge for my life. College helped me to learn balance my life between social, education, relationship, family and financial that will affect my future life after I finish with my college. I met some incredible people that I have learned so much from and have been good for my life. They taught me life lessons. For example, one of my professors once said to me, "You have 24 hour every day. Use that time wisely." It's valuable to attend college because we walk out of college with all the experience and knowledge that college provides. Our knowledge helps the community come together, helps our family and each other, and inspires others to go to college as well. I'm sure going to college will help future generations to have a better life, because of advances in technology, education, and social life that we learn

Chris

I gained a sense of approaching problems without knowing I have the right answer. I gained a sense of logic and test taking skills that I did not have before. I feel more prepared when faced with an unexpected problem, and confident in myself to know that I will conquer the task at hand. I gained motivation, and a strong learning experience that I feel will prepare me for the world. My strong work ethic has come from failure, my ambition and drive has come from wanting to be the best. College has helped me gain a drive and hunger to be great, and it showed me that hard work does pay off. Failure is a step higher than not trying and that what I told myself every semester to help motivate me. I am not the same man I was when I first arrived at college. I feel like a new person, one with a better head on his shoulders, and that can control the stress that often comes with school. College in a sense even brought me closer to God. I prayed more, and asked that I not get an "A" but to not be alone.

Melanie

At first, I didn't take college so seriously. I thought college was going to be just like high school: quick and easy. Little did I know, that everything I did (studying habits, attendance) affected how and what I learned, as well as my GPA. I currently have a GPA of 3.2 and I know it would be higher if I took it more seriously when I began. I've come to realize that some teachers really do care if you succeed and don't only treat you as a number and I really appreciate meeting those teachers. I've learned a lot, from management skills to how the human anatomy works. I've grown both academically and emotionally being at a community college. Since I'm still young, furthering my studies has become the most important goal to me now, and having college experience has helped me put my priorities in order. I truly believe I have matured with the responsibility of being in control of my classes and direction in life. I will get my A.A.S. in Accounting in spring 2011 and I plan to transfer to a 4-year university by Fall 2011.

Yasmine

I've learned what it is like to be an adult. You have to make good responsible decisions. It is valuable to attend because it has an excellent Nursing program that I've been trying to get into.

Sofia

As I am writing this I have only completed one semester of college however I can say that this semester has change my way of seeing certain things in life. I have learned that we have not been prepared enough to go out into the world and experience such a diverse society. So many cultures and traditions we are completely clueless about because we are usually all come from highschool in which we only see classmate and teachers that are just like us. We truly cannot vaule the beauty of life and the wonderful lesson it has to teach us. Once I stepped on campus my mind became a sponge I absorded everything, I have meet great people and I will keep meeting amazing people who will help me cherish these memories forever. I cannot imagine how I would have turned out if I never decided to attend college, I would probably never keep broken out of my shell and explore the lives of others. I can really say that this semester has been life changing.

Teresa

I recieved an excelent education, and developed into the person that I am today.

The first year of college I lived in the CSUN dorms. I was assigned to live with three strangers, that I eventually came to know well. I was nervous and afraid they wouldn't like me, even before I met them. What CSUN didn't tell me was that my roommates were all Deaf and communicated with American Sign Language (ASL). The experience was valuable to me in that I was exposed to a completely different culture, a culture of which I was eventually accepted into but was still very much an outsider because I was hearing- the term used by the Deaf community for people that have no auditory impairments. I had never met a non-hearing person before this, let alone a group that communicated exclusively nonverbally. This experienced helped me to address preconceived notions I had about groups of people and guided me to seek higher education in social work. I thank CSUN for ommiting vital information about my housing, because had I known my roommates were Deaf I may felt it would be more appropriate for me to live with women who I could communicate with verbally. I may not have had this experience.

Jennifer

So far , the college experience has been eye opening to me. I have learned that college relies highly on self dicipline. Time management is solely on our hands and it is up to me , to balance everything equally. Homework can pile up , as does our knowledge. Every class we take is a new experience because it is an opportunity to learn and master a subject. College is far more serious than high school was and it is the stepping stone to a brighter future. If one plans on succeeding in life, one must be dedicated to their education and not take the opportunity to learn for granted. College is valuable , because our futures depend on it. The more we accomplish , the farther we will get in life.

guadalupe

out of my college experience I've seen how I've grown up and where i am at. I am really happy to be where i am at, at the moment. I've experienced so many things from hard work, to actually making my own decisions in life and in school even choosing your own schedule what ever tends to accomodate your time. Throughout college even though it's my first year i know i will continue to experience wonderful things that will lead me to sucess. It has been valuable to attend and have the opportunity to attend because I am experiencing something new, something I've never experienced before. Throughout my college years i hope to gain the knowledge i need in order to be someone in life, and decide where I will be headed to and what I will be in life.

Emily

I feel that my college is wonderful. The people here really make you feel welcome and they want to make sure you succeed with your goals. The teachers are wonderful. Each teacher has their own style of teach and their own personality; there really is some one for everyone. So far every teacher I have had wants go get to know each student by name so that they can better assist us. The teachers are helpful and supportive, but they also maintain discipline and keep students motivated through out the entire process. I believe I am getting a wonderful education for a great price.

Alexandra

I've learned a lot of new material and I have learned how to think through a different perspective from many of my professors. My professors always teach me to analayze, question and think about all the information we've ever known to be true.

Kimberly

I recall not having a educational or career goal in 1995 because I was so close to dropping out of high school, however, thanks to a few good individuals that God placed in my life at certain times in my life who encouraged me to further my education and career goals. I went back to school and obtaining my high school diploma in 1997, my associate degree in 2005 and currently working on a bachelor degree from Wichita State University. I hope one day to obtain a master degree in psychology and then hopefully a doctrine to assist single mothers and their children with understanding the importance of a higher education. My career goals have also changed through the years from waiting tables at Pizza Hut in 1995, assisting elderly individuals as a CNA from 1998 to 2000, to assisting elderly individuals as a home health aid from 22001 to 2005, then an outcome data coordinator from 2005 to 2006, and from 2006 to current as an addiction counselor, assisting adults who are struggling with their own substance abuse issues

Rachel

I have gotten alot of experience on things that I never knew about and others that added to my education. I gained alot of skills, not only in lectures, but also in actual settings that match my major. My time in school is valuable to me because it provides me with the means to a brighter future. I also see it as a step foward in providing for myself as an independant and also for my children if i decide to have any in the future. I love to experience knew things, and my education will broaden my horizon. I gained life long friends and connections for later in life for which I am greatful for their support.

Daniel

I do not come from a privileged background. We always had food on our table, but by no means were we wealthy. My father is an immigrant to America and got his GED. My mother only finished high school as she got pregnant just after graduation. Going to university was a big priority for me, as well as my parents. Only six months after I was accepted, an earthquake ravaged my school, CSU Northridge. We had to study in trailers and even at other universities. I was on the Dean’s List for the first three semesters when the Study Abroad program at CSUN notified me and asked if I wouldn’t want to travel the world. That changed everything in my life. I studied music in London, England and that started my wanderlust. I moved to Japan where I spent nine years teaching English and music to children. I traveled to over 30 countries in that time, from Europe to the Middle East to Asia and North America. I am now back in California trying to get MORE education, so that with a credential and Masters degree, I can once again travel the world and teach what I love.

Kathy

I always thought about college in high school and what a scary thought it was. I had no idea everywhere I went, there was a resource that would be able to help me. Anything from financial aid advisors to tutors for all the subjects I am taking, I find all the help I can get to be extremely valuable. They are advisors that will even help with a sucessful path to the ultimate goal: graduating. There are even places like the Women’s Resource Center at my school, where anyone, man or woman, can go to for any question or to even do homework. After figuring out there are so many people at school who just want students to suceed and will help along the way, attending a college is not a frightening notion.

kendra

i have learnedthat education is everything in order to have a great life for my son and I. I am ready to finish my degree and have a career in the health field and help people/ I enjoy it so much.

Dana

My college experience has been amazing. I absolutely love the school I am attending! The teachers are incredible and the class size is so small, which makes it really comfortable and easy to learn. When I first decided to go to a community college I was a little hesitent just because I felt like I would be missing out on the typical "college experience" . However, I have fallen in love with my school and my classes-- I am so happy with my desicion. I feel like the first year and a half of college so far, has just got me more excited for my future. I am really begining to learn what I like and what I do not like. I have discovered so much about myself that I never really knew before. I think it is so important and valuable to attend college because it is such a great learning experience. The better educated you are, the more likely you are to get the job you want and the happier you will be. College provides students with important resources and tools to better their education and life.

Hailey

I had been homeschooled for most of my middle school career and my high school years were spent in a limited contact school, akin to a study hall. The first day I walked onto my college campus my heart was beating so loud I feared others may be able to hear it. Due to my limited interaction with people my own age, I felt that I would never fit in. I thought the only reason I was going was to gain an education and I most assuredly received it, not only from my wonderful professors but also from my peers. In college I have learned more about people and the real world than I ever knew before, I have learned the basic human nature is being adamant in one’s beliefs and the spirit is truly strong. It was in seeing this strength in others that I felt my own swell from the bottom of my heart and I know as long as this strength remains that I learned in college, I will be able to stand by my own beliefs as a author and as a human.

Brandon

College is an experience that has helped prepare me for life after school. At the community college I attended, I decided the classes I would be taking, paid for my tuition and books, and went to class on my own. I also balanced school with a part-time job so that I could afford going to college on my own. Now I am at a private university and I am living away from home. This has helped my realize a little more what life is like on my own. I do not have anybody watching over my every move or telling me what to do. Attending college has also been valuable because I am learning things that are going to help me in career and in life in general.

Millie

I have gained so many knew friends from different walks of life, but we all attain the same goal of higher education. It has been valuable to attend CSUN because I have been able to further my education with all of their resources made for the student's benefit.

Patricia

Besides the fact that CSUN has a huge diversity of ethnicities, what I have gotten out of my college experience is independence. Before college I was in high school where there wasn't as much responsibility, as there is now in college. Now that I turned 18years old, I don't have to rely on my mother to sign papers for me. Also, in college the proffessors are more strict and are not much of a babysitter when it comes to deadlines or learning something that is not taught by them. But now, I feel more responsible, more like an adult. It's been valuable to attend CSUN because I have recognized that I have reached a goal. A goal that has been setup since middle school, which is going to a four year college. Although CSUN wasn't my first choice, I am glad that I attend this school because I feel very pleased, satisfied, and at home.

Garran

The college experience has taught me to be independent and to be true to myself. THe independence factor of college is amazing, you need some type of motivator in order to simply go to school on time or even show up to school. This is the reason that i need to rely on myself to make the right decisions, to go to school, and to try new things. In the long run it is very important to attend any college. Although people do not know this but college can lead you to a better place, even better then they are in at that present time. College is a tool to put people to the path of success and stability, it molds people to what they imagine themselves to be. Thats why i think its important, because you can better yourself by attending and by succeeding.

Cindy

In college I have learned to be more open-minded. My environment consist of very diverse people. In high school, the majority would rule and many people would follow what was "in ". However, in college I have learned that everybody is different. Everyone has their own style and they come from a different background. With this in mind, I have been able to accept more beliefs and customs of other people. I believe that this experience is very valuable to me because I am able to open up more and not be ignorant. I no longer only accept with what I grew up with, I am now open to more options and am able to make my own decisions. I believe that peer pressure is no longer a big problem on campus, due to the fact that many of us are too different from each other. Although it is comforting to find a crowd that you can relate to, a diverse group of people is also very welcoming and interesting.

Olivia

So far, my college experience has provided me with independence and an open mind. I have found that if I want something, I have to go and get it. Life is easier if you are open to opportunities and experiences. Although I am only a freshman, I have learned that college is a solid ground to start establishing who I am as a person. It will give me the knowledge and experiences I need to successfully achieve a healthy, prosporous life. College is one big, open door. What is held behind it is important and easily attanable. It will always be open and I will always be able to leave and come back. College will help define me. I will help define me. Through my experiences, I know I can achieve greatness.

Marilyn

I have become more aware of how things work in life i have also become a better person for my self.

LaQuisha

I've gotten a great education. As well as made life long friends. It is something I feel everyone should experience because you learn a lot about yourself. You have to gain responsibility and become accountable for your own actions. It helps young adults to mature into mature young adults. As well, I've met people with the same interest as me. They are some of my best friends and I am glad to have met them. My life would be much different without them. Therefore, everyone should experience college life. You meet lots of people, some you like and some you don't. You learn to be an adult and take a hold of your own life. Lastly, you learn who you are. You figure out what you want to do in life, and who you will be in life. I've learned that I want to become a teacher and I've learned that I am independent, quirky, and weird. Luckily for me, I've found people similar to me, thanks to college that is. In conclusion, college life is the best thing that's happened to me thus far.

Rony

In just four weeks atteding a four year university, I have learned so much about life in general. how to not depend on people, be myself, help my community, get involved and help people in general that are going through the same issues that i am facing as well. Living life as a college student can be tough because you leave your house, you become a new person because we all change and change is something that we cannot avoid or run from it's always there and it will be there. It is a great opportunity to get to figure out who you truly are by embracing new life opportunities and learning that every dream that we posses can become true if we put our mind and heart to every activity we do in our lives we will be successful.

Adriana

Ive been here for about three weeks already and I have learn so manythings that took my a while to learn in high school. I have learn how to be open to different point of views other than myself. I have also learned how to manage my time wisely and keep up with my homework due dates. Most importantly I have learned how to not procastinate towards due dates, its something that is very hard to do when you have a job and homework due on different days of the wreek.

Jenny

My college experience has provided me with many things from skills, resources, and networks to the ability to advance to other things such as pursuing graduate school. My college experience has allowed me the opportunity to try various interests and narrow my goals. College has provided me the avenue and the opportunity to grow as an individual. It has also offered me the time to realize my capabilities and limits. College has been a valuable time for me because I have been able to learn important lessons. I definitely feel that attending college was a valuable experience for me because it gave me the tools to succeed in the future. It gave me a chance to figure out my strengths and weaknesses. College has given me the confidence to continue my education. My only regrets are that I wish I had known from the start, what I wanted to study and do. College is a time to start learning about life, shaping who we are as individuals, and who we want to become. College is a great way for someone to learn and become adjusted into going out into the world.

Te'Jon

Well I haven't started yet but im sure its going to be a wonderful experience.

Janyne

Attending college has made me a better person. Also, I've learned just how important it is to be involved, get to know my professors, network with professionals, research, find out what it is I want to do in life and sticking with it, and making the most out of my college experience. At the end of the day, when I look back over my life, I don’t want to regret not taking chances and opportunities that were offered to me, I want to make the best out of life and be happy. My success will be defined by how happy I am not how much money I make. Now I have something very valuable I can always keep with me, and that’s the vital lessons I’ve learned from my years at CSUN. My college education will be so valuable towards my future, because in the field of Psychology specifically, you have to have a Ph.D. to practice. Also, researching so many jobs, the priority goes to those individuals who have degrees. It really shows how dedicated a person is to becoming succesful in their field, when they continue their education on to college and beyond.

Destiny

Always check back, make sure you complete everything explicitly and thuroughly, and keep track of date and names. Aslo Ask for help, and the most effective and resonable ways to complete even the most trivial task, it cane save much trouble and frustration.

i am an incoming fresman.

Both of the colleges I have attended have been entirely different; one regular classroom education and the other vocational trade. In my current trade school, the teachers have been so much more interested in "me" than just being a number or a person in a classroom they really did not know. Many times they did not seem to care about me or want to take the time to help me. Now that I am attending my trade school, the school is still very big, the classes are many, but the teachers have made such a difference in how I feel about school and my self-worth. They are very encouraging and take the time to get to know me and help with anything. That has been very important to me and has increased my GPA to an "A" since I left the junior college I was previously attending. I enjoy school very much now, am doing very well, and I have much respect for my teachers. The students also seem to help one another more than in the other college I attended. I have made many friends, some of which I feel will be lifelong friends, which is awesome!

Dalia

When I started my freshman year in California State University of Northridge I was very eager to find out what was coming up next in my life. I was at a point in my life in which I was not sure what I really wanted for myself; fortunately during my first year in college I figured out that my passion was in radiology. I discovered radiology when I was assigned a research paper about radiologists. Thanks to college I now I know what career path I want to peruse. During my time in college I also learned how to be more independent. I have learned how to manage my own time. Time management is essential in college because you have to manage your class schedule, study time, time to eat and time for yourself. The most valuable thing I have received is my education. I have more knowledge now than I did when I first started college.

Guillermo

I Finally understand the value of a College education. I now know first hand the cost of a College degree and let me just say this its not an easy price to pay, especially in the rought economic times we live in today. Even though its hard I vaslue my experiences as a student and hope that it will all pay off in the long run.

Loyda

I have never been the girl that was alone. I always had my parents with me to help me out whenever I needed help, or my friends at school. All of this changed in college. All of my friends attended different schools and I was the only one that came here. I felt lonely and like an outcast. Little did I know that while not having the distractions of my friends I got a lot done. I had more time for myself, my homework. I learned that being alone is not bad at all. I also learned that without having my parents next to me I learned to be independent and I watched out for myself. I also learned the responsibility that my attendance and my work are in every class. The professors did not check up on my work, or urged me to keep up with my work. I had to do it all alone. I had the responsibility of turning in my work on time and making sure I knew when my next assignment was due and when I had my next test. It was my responsibility to take care of my work and my life.
