Central Michigan University Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Megan

Our student body is very diverse. We have many RSO's and I think that every student can find their place here. From sororities and fraternities to a Harry Potter Club, each student can become involved and that makes the student body at CMU even better.

Alex

CMU's student body is extremely diverse. They are lots of student groups for just about any person with any interest level. I don't think any student would feel out of place here. Most of CMU's students are from the Detroit outskirts area (i.e. Plymouth, Salem, Farmington Hills, Sterling Heights, Birmingham, Canton, Rochester, etc.)

Jesse

This university has long been focused on student and apparently staff diversity. From the day I arrived here on campus I have noticed a diverse group of students, different in every way. This university has tons of interest groups. I feel like there is something for everyone here.

Chrissy

I don't think that religion, race, status financially, or other aformentioned "groups" should be a major issue for people in their decision to come to central. These are minute factors that if a person wants to be adaptable would learn to be comfortable in any situation. Preparing for a job means being comfortable in many different levels that aren't necessarily controllable so I will not discuss these beyond the fact that if they are a factor they do exist on CMU's campus.

Tina

It is not racially intermixed for the most part. Minorities would feel out of place. I wear leggins and uggs and a t-shirt. Some different types of student interact but not most. I dont know anything baout the four tables. CMUs students are mostly from MI. Middle class. No. I dont know. Yes they do.

Kim

Tons of opportunities to get involved~~250 RSOs...fabulous!

Brandi

Central Michigan is not really a diverse school, or maybe people don't portray it. I don't think any kind of student would feel out of place. Mosy students wear jeans, sweatpants, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. Many different students interact with each other. Many different types of students interact. It's not as cliquey at high school. CMU students are from all over Michigan. For the most part, I see that many students are conservative. Many students plan on being very successful.

Meghan

I feel there are certain aspects of central's student body that I have found dissapointing. One of these aspects is that many of the students in my residence hall are not open to new experiences or alternative lifestyles. I wish that students were more politically aware and tolerant of other's opinions.

Tara

I feel like no student would feel out of place at Central. While I do think there are a lot of kinks to sort out with dealing with diversity, I feel that Central tries really hard to welcome multi-cultural students. Most students wears sweatpants, and hoodies to class. I think that most Central students are from lower south, by Detroit and from the Grand Rapids area.

Amanda

CMU is a very open and understanding campus who does not want to take discrimination. It has all different groups on campus for help or support depending on your situation. The adverage student dress down for class, usually in casual attier. Most CMU students are from Michigan, but there are exchange students and from other states as well.

Erin

We are not very diverse... I believe we are more diverse than other colleges though. The african american kids interact with each other more than other people, and same with the Asian students.

Alex

Not a very diverse student body, if I had to say. Students are for the most part politically aware and active. Predominantly right. Students do talk about how much they'll earn one day.

Rachel

Central has so many oppurtunities for leadership. However, only about 10{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the campus take advantage of those oppurtunities.

Kelly

Central has diversity, but maybe not as much as other schools. There are always events being put on about diversity and awearness. Pride week is coming up here where there are a lot of events geared towards awareness about the LGBT community. There was Asian Heritage month, Hispanic heritage month, etc where groups on campus can come out and support events going on and get a taste of different cultures.

Chris

In morning classes student tend to wear sweat pants and comfortable clothes while later on in the day clothes are more casual or business casual. Most students are from the metro Detroit area which makes the school not as diverse as it is led on to be. Most students are from middle class families and fairly well off. Students that would feel out of place at central Michigan would be ones whom grew up in farm communities. There are a few religious groups on campus and segregated racial groups of people which is bound to happen in such a large school.

Shelby

The student body seems to not put a high value on academics. An example would be the high level of sweatpants wore to class. The students are mostly from the spoiled rich kid base.

aaron

CMU's student body is great - lots of diverse people.

Kaitlin

There are so many programs on campus that try to incorportate the student body; it is very easy for people to become invloved and the campus encourages this.

Barry

Awesome difersity and awesome student body.

Brett

If there were four tables at a CMU dining hall the first one would be for the greek community. The greek community on campus is really large and is a clique all of its own. At the second table you would have all of the foreign exchange students. They don't talk to anyone except other foreign exchange students. The third would definetly be the CMU sports teams. And the last one would be for everyone else because really no other cliques are that prominent.

Joshua

GENERALLY I have not seen discrimination or anything similar on campus. Most students go to class so they're comfortable, unless they are in their last few classes and should dress more professional.

Nate

A student that does not get involved will feel left out.

Kelly

I feel that CMU tries very hard to promote diversity on campus. However, the same groups of students attend all of these same events. The only other time that many people go is when they have to go for class.

Ashley

People seem to be extremely apathetic politically wise on campus- but i've never had problems with any racial or any other type of discrimination.

Lindsey

most students are relaxed around centrals campus, sweatpants and sweatshirts are always acceptable to wear to class, which is nice for most! the one bad thing is that the campus is not very diverse.

Alissa

CMU is a very diverse school that offers many opportunities to get to know students that are very different from yourself. I have enjoyed getting to know people who have cultures and views that are different from my own. I really don't think any person would feel out of place going to CMU because it is so diverse and welcoming to anyone. Students at Central are very laid back, which is probably the case for most college campuses but they are still very involved and dedicated to school spirit.

maryann

there are alot tof groups on campus that get involved in many charitys which is nice. i feel like they give back to the comunity

Mark

The majority of Central's students are from Michigan. I have met a decent amount of students that come from surrounding states such as Ohio and Wisconsin and very few that come from any where else. I know that we do have students attend CMU that come from abroad but I have not interacted with any of them personally. CMU has a relatively diverse student body compared to my high school.

Taylor

I like the students since they are all different. Everyone has something different to bring to the university.

Steve

There are almost no boundaries to what students wear to class. I have worn both sweatpants and suits before. We are very diverse in what we wear around campus. Most Central students are from either the metro detroit area, Saginaw, Grand Rapids, or the U.P. A student who would feel out of place is someone who is just looking for a degree. Someone who doesn't want to make lifelong friends, go to socials, meet people and have fun. They are strictly paying for college to get their degree and move on with life. At Central the students enjoy college and work to better themselves so that when they get out into the real world they are well rounded.

Todd

No real problems with any of the groups. I am a member of the LGBT community, but am not an active participant in it. I'm gay, but I don't let it define who I am. I am not one to fight for gay rights.

Jenny

I think we have a very good group of diverse students, I just wish we could meet more people without joining a group.

Ashley

There are a lot of groups on campus and I think they are good to have and well respected. I dont think any student would feel out of place at Central. A lot of students just wear hoodies and jeans to class, no one really gets dressed up. I think different types of students interact. Central students are from everywhere but a lot of them are from metro detroit and grand rapids areas. I think a good amount of students are politcally aware and I have no idea about predominately what side. I haven't really heard students talking about how much they'll earn.

Scott

I don't think that too many students would feel out of place at Central Michigan. CMU happens to be predominantly white, but there is a diverse mix of most races. Also from my experience at Central Michigan, Students happen to be very friendly and welcoming to any race.

Kristin

I think all types of students interact amongst Centrals campus. Of course everyone finds that certian group that they become comfortable with but I can't say that there is discrimination to any students. Most students are quite alike; all wearing sweats and comfortable clothing to class. A lot of the students here are from Michigan, and a lot from the metro detroit area, so I think that helps us relate to one another.

Joseph

The student body, I think is one of the best reasons to go to Central Michigan. There are so many opportunities to get involved in things on this campus. The people here are very accepting of you, which makes the experience ten times better than what it woul dhave been somewhere else.

jake

student body is very diverse, the students are segregated and dont have a lot of things to bring them together.

Christina

OUr student body is diverse. We have people from different countries and backgrounds. Many people are liberal and willing to learn more about other cultures around them. Some students pay attention to politics, but for the most part I think many don't. I know many did not even vote in our campus elections.

Tina

I think greek life has many stereotypes. People dont always give greeks the respect and credit we deserve. We do a lot most work than the average college student and I dont feel that that is always represented as so. CMU is not racially mixed. A black person or ethnic person would feel out of place. I wear leggings and UGG boots to class. For the most part, different types of students do not interact. I do not go to the dinning hall. Most central students are from Metro Detroit (or at least I like to think that). Most the people I know are well off finiancially. Mostly middle class i guess. No students are not politically aware or active. I dont know what that means L, R, or center. Yes, students talk about how much they'll earn one day.

Ryan

Central is really trying to promote ending diversity. There are multiple programs that offer information and education on other ethnic groups or religions. I dont feel like any student would feel out of place at Central. There are so many groups, that each person has at least one that matches their interest. Or they could at least find a group of people outside of those clubs to hang out with. In high school there are many sterotypes and cliques, once you walk into the doors at Central, all of that is broken down and the most popular girl in school could be eating lunch with a member of the band.

Chris

There is diversity on CMU's campus but it is not just racial. We have programs such as the Gay Straight Alliance to help reduce people stereotypes and teach students about different groups of people. There are cultural celebrations every month that focus on different groups, and there are cultural fraternities and sororities who work to promote diversity on the campus. There is a lot of interaction of people from different socioeconomic backgrounds as well as cultural.

Ryan

i believe that almost anyone would feel comofortable here at CMU there are many student organizations to get involoved with. every fall before classes begin we have what is called main stage this is an opertunity to walk through tents filled with booths of each student orignization. we have students from all over but i would have to say most are form within the state.

Ben

There are groups around campus. The athletes, the Greeks, the gamers, etc..Everyone finds their group and fits right in. If you dont, you arent trying hard enough. There are people of all backgrounds here. I would say most people here are pretty left sided in politics. I notice this because I am very right sided. I think Im outnumbered! lol

Lane

I think that everybody would feel welcome to come to CMU. They would fit in somewhere and have a great time. Yes, different types of students interact, i know i like to meet new people and try so see what their interests are. Students are from all over Michigan and other states.

Emmerson

The student body seems predominantly white, with some african-americans, and hardly any hispanics. I don't feel we are a very racially diverse school. I think when someone sees a black man on campus they think "oh he must be an athlete". I grew up in the Kalamazoo area all my life and my older brother went to Western Michigan, and they seem to have much more diversity on their campus than we do.

Katelyn

The student bods is very diverse you can get to know all different kinds of people as long as you are willing to open up. The financial backgrounds of the students here really varies, you can meet anyone from the rich kids from the suburbs to the inner city child.

Kristen

I don't go to central.

Nico

I think its pretty diverse and have a lot of different opportunities for students to get involved in different clubs/organizations.

Doug

The diversity on CMU's campus is amazing. The students usually know about politics, and respect eachothers views on things.

Alyse

Racial/religious/LGBT/socio-ec./etc groups are terrible. They're so radical and they give people a bad name. Different types of students interact, we don't need more crap pushed down our throats by the administration. Four tables: Girls, guys, girls and guys, the loner. Most CMU students are from Detroit/area (probably because CMU targets Detroit because they want a more "diverse" population). All financial backgrounds. Students are liberal (as is faculty/admin) and strive to give the moderate/conservative students a bad name rather than allow all views.
