What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Peter

I like the Greek community, we have a lot of fun.

Lauren

The most popular groups on campus i think are the fraternities and sororities and the sports teams. In the beginning of the year i think people in dorms leave their doors open a lot to meet people in their hall but as the year goes on there arent as many doors open. Athletic events are really popular, especially the football games in the fall everyone goes and tailgates and goes to the games. Guest speakers are popular sometimes depending on what the topic is about. I met my closest friends through my sorority. A tradition that happens every year is Central/Western weekend which is usually a big deal for everyone. I think greek life is important to people who are in a fraternity or sorority but I wasn't greek until my sophmore year and during my freshman year I didnt think that being in a sorority was that important but now I dont know what I did before being part of a sorority. Last weekend I went to my sororities philanthropy event, went to a social with delta chi and hung out with my boyfriend and sorority sisters. If you dont want to drink on a Saturday night you can go bowling, go to the SAC, see a movie, rent a movie with friends.

Thomas

There are a lot of things to do around campus that bring people closer together whether it is a hall picnic to a Fraternity or Sorority philathrophy event.

Chelsea

There are many ways to get involved on the campus. There are several registered student orginizations, I am sure there is one for everyone to find their nitch on campus and way to get involved.

Ashley

The social life at Central is amazing. Living in the dorms, you always have someone to hang out with, then by the time you move off of campus, you have made so many friends from living in the dorms, that there is always people to hang out with. Combine that with joining a student organization and you never have to worry about being bored. Thursday through Sunday night are nights for house parties or to go to the Pub or Wayside no matter if you are 18 or 21. On Tuesday's, if you are 21, O'Kelly's is the place to go. Besides party life, there is always events going on, pick up basketball games at the SAC or open mic night at Kaya (one of the local coffee shops) so even though Central is in the middle of the corn fields, life is always fun.

Megan

Last weekend was Mock Rock. The final event in Greek Week and I had the best time ever! Being able to dance in front of hundreds of people was great. It was one of the greatest weeks ever being able to socialize with all the other sororities and fraternities on campus in all the competitions.

Alex

Greek life is very big at CMU Some people leave their dorm room doors open Football games are very popular at CMU, not so much for other sports I met my closest friends through becoming part of the Greek community here and joining Delta Chi Every year we have Homecomming, Reggae Fest, Career Fairs, etc. People party quite frequently at Central Fraternities and sororities are very important at CMU. Our greek life is quite popular on our campus.

Jesse

Delta Chi fraternity is among the more popular groups, along with Sigma Kappa sorority. The towers residents often have their doors open. There are always great panel discussions put on by the Speak UP Speak OUT series. There is always a great list of events going on put on by the hall councils, that really appeal to those students who would rather not drink on a Saturday night.

Gina

Intramural sports teams and RSO's are very popular at CMU. Its rare to find a student not involved in one or the other. I met most of my closest friends in the dorms my freshman and sophomore year. My current boyfriend I met through a friend at a fraternity party last year.

Chrissy

I love being greek although this is not a majority on campus. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a great way to reach to kids Pre-Medical society really helps prepare you for med-school if you put the time in. There are so many different activities including sports teams, ethnic groups, theater, comedians, SAC, restaurants, coffee shops, and so many more things to do. Central sends out things that are happening over a list serve so you can be updated about things going on around campus. Plus, the news paper is always a good place to see what's going on!

Tina

Greek life. DZ. Yes. Only popular if there is a tailgate. THe dating scene is primarily the bar which isnt great. My closest friends are my roomates from freshman year and my sorority sisters. I am usually studying. Homecoming and CMU vs WMU games. People party of most of the week.. or only on weekends.. or not at all it varies. Greek life is very important. Last weekend I had Greek week. You can hang out in your apartment, lay in bed, watch movies, go to the movies, go out to dinner, etc.

Kim

I hang out with friends on weekends...I'm not pressured to drink because I make it clear that I'm not into it...

Brandi

The 'big thing' to do on campus is to go Greek. I am involved in a sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta. It gives me the opportunity to make new friends, network, and make the most of my college experience. In the beginning of the semester, many students leave their doors open, but not so much later because school gets very intense. Football games are extremely popular to go to. I met my closest friends from my residence hall and my sorority. Homecoming is a big event at CMU. At 2a.m. on a Tuesday, I would be studying. People party often at CMU. Frats/Sororities are a high part of the social scene.

Meghan

The social life at central is pretty active. I know that in my residence hall, every door leaves their room open and we all spent the majority of our time hanging out. There are many groups to get involved in and there is definitely something for everyone.

Tara

I am involved with Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. It is a social sorority. In the underclassman dorms, a lot more people leave their doors open. The more upperclassman dorms leave their doors closed more often. Football games are the most popular athletic events. Basketball and other sports are less popular. I think people party VERY often. Every weekend and occasionally those few that do during a few days out of the week.

Amanda

Some popular groups on campus are Greeks, On the Fly and program board, SAPA, etc. Some students leave their door open but it depends on each hall and floor. I meet my closest friends on campus from my dorm room

Erin

I love my sorority. They are my closest friends on campus. There are always a lot of parties going on, but usually only on the weekends. I am not a big partier... I do drink occasionally, but never a whole lot. There are many other things on campus that can keep you busy to avoid drinking every night.

Alex

Amazing school for activities and social life, everyone has a good time. Joining a fraternity or sorority is one of the best decisions you can make. But our own student life department (and the city!) seems like they're fighting as hard as they can to get rid of them. It's ridiculous, as everyone I've ever met from a greek organization, all say they have gained so many interpersonal skills, social skills, management skills, the list is endless on what you have to gain being in a greek organization.

Rachel

The campus is less than 10{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} Greek. However, I highly suggest joining a sorority or fraternity. Members not only develop leadership skills in their own chapters, but are also the leaders on campus.

Kelly

There are a ton of organizations on campus. There are a lot of pre- clubs, pre PA, PT, etc. There are leadership, diversity and social fraternities and sororities that make up a small population of campus. Football games are the main social events during the fall. People do party a lot, but people also do a lot of other things, like things to help the community and jobs, etc.

Chris

Greek life is pretty big at this University which is a good way to get involved with things and meet a lot of new people. With this University being located in the middle of nowhere and the student body being young and laid back the main activity is drinking. People party often on weekends or leave for home on the weekend. There are a number of interesting speakers that come to campus that I have been able to attend which has been enjoyable

Shelby

I feel that people party nearly everyday here. There aren't many on-campus events that students are interested in that would stop students desire to go out. There aren't many events that happen on the weekends that doesn't involve drinking.

Joe

Central Michigan University's student body needs to be more accepting of Greek life and not be so hung up on stereotypes and other annoying things that people always "uneducatedly" think about Greek life. RUSH and see for yourself!

aaron

GREEKS - I'm a Greek and I honestly say that joining a fraternity was the best decision I've made in college. Central has a great social life. I think it would help if the area had more chain restaurants though.

Kaitlin

Greek life isnt that popular, but i feel that they do benefit the campus and the community in a very positive way. The more students at CMU become invloved in greek life, the better their experience here will be.

Barry

Awesome activities for everyone and awesome greek life.

Brett

I don't think that a lot of campus sees the importance of fraternities and sororities, but honestly they are really important. They bring a lot of speakers and events to campus that otherwise wouldn't be there. They provide philanthropy's and help with other events on campus in large numbers. The campus leaders are in fraternities and sororities.

Joshua

Football games are definately the most popular. Phi Sigma Phi has definatley gotten me more involved in campus. I've seen more speaekrs, meet more people (including my girlfriend).

Nate

Phi Sigma Phi

Kelly

There are many different Registered Student Organizations on campus that are available for students to join. From leadership and service groups to Greek organizations to professional groups, there is something for everyone at Central. It is really important to get involved on campus because that is the best way to meet people.

Ashley

Central has a great variety of options and groups to join- i'm in a sorority, where I've met tons of amazing people. The campus is always bringing great speakers and entertainment to campus.

Lindsey

most of the time in dorms, if you are on a friendly floor the doors are open to get to know people but the best way to find your group on campus is by doing sports or going greek. I am in a sorority and i dont know where i would be if it wasnt for them. another thing a lot of people do is join organizations for their majors.

Alissa

Some popular groups that CMU has to offer are the greek life, IM sports, clubs that are related to majors and future careers and many leadership programs. A particular program that I'm involved in is Leadership safari which prepares students for success at the same time making them aware of what the real world is going to hold for them. I personally love this program because it gives new students a chance to look at their own personal image while creating bonds with other new students and also helps students become famaliar to the CMU campus. For the most part, athletic events are pretty popular with the most popular event being football. Weekends at CMU consist of studying and going out. In general, CMU students work hard to play hard. The people that i'm peronally close to live by that motto and to us academics is the first priority. Partying is a big aspect of student life but there is also so much more that CMU has to offer. A weekend can also be spent at the gym, going to the casino, hanging out with friends, going to the movies or theater, or going down town to just hang out.

maryann

i think alot of people are involved in greek life. there are many different activites people can be involved in and they are easy to find

Mark

Football is huge at CMU. It's the one sport that CMU is consistently enthusiastic about. We do have some interesting events that happen at CMU. I personally enjoy the comedic stand-up shows that come to CMU. This Friday I will be attending Jim Norton. In the past I have seen Jim Gaffigan, Stephen Lynch and unfortunately I missed Jim Brewer. Those are some pretty big acts relative to the comedy world. Though I have not been impressed with the selection of musical artists that have come to CMU in the last couple years (including Lil Scrappy and the upcoming One Republic/Fabolous show).

Taylor

I think Greek life is very popular on campus. They are very involved and always have different things for you to do.

Steve

Some dorms have the reputation of having their doors always open. I live in Barnes and we are relatively a small community of only 160 students and we have our doors open all the time. However when one goes to the towers, he or she will find that almost all the doors are closed because it is hard to get to know 400 people in your hall rather than just the 160. I am involved in Sigma Alpha Epsilon and it is a social fraternity. We are composed of the male leaders on campus and strive to be True Gentlemen in our daily lives. We are not the typical frat. and we are called a Fraternity of brothers because we are dispelling the stereotypes of greek life. We do not haze and have a no tolerance policy on this unlike some greek organizations here and around the U.S. People usually party thursdays and saturdays with fridays as their day of rest. However there are many alternatives to doing these activities. Many nights there are events around campus going on, video game tournaments, athletic competitions, contests or speakers that students can go to to have fun.

Todd

Football games and tailgating are a blast. So much fun and good times are had in that parking lot. Fraternities and sororities can play a major part in someone's college career. I think they are given a bad name, but in the end, it's something you will never regret. The experiences and moments you have with your brothers you will never look back on. It's just something hard to describe until you go through it all!

Jenny

Pretty interesting.

Ashley

I think that IM sports, club sports and Greek groups are the most popular, whether its social greeks or some sort of co-ed fraternity. I think a lot of students go to athletic events but they aren't as popular as they were in my high school, we have a lot of guest speakers, in classes and not in classes. Dating is big, a lot of people date within their groups, like Greeks date other Greeks but a lot of people also just date without a group. My closest friends are my sorority sisters and a girl from my leadership safari group. If I'm awake at 2 am on a tuesday I'm up talking to my boyfriend or watching a movie with him. People that do party I think party like a few times a week, not that much though. Sororities and fraternities are very important I think, I am in one and it helps a lot with everything. Last weekend I participated in Mock Rock for Greek Week and studied. On a saturday I stay in and watch movies with friends, go out to the movies, go bowling and different things like that.

Scott

I guess the most popular events are the football games in the fall. Central does not charge students to enter the stadium and watch the games. Central Michigan has a program called On-the-fly, this program is ran by students and is in charge of getting entertainment to come to our school, some of the entertainers they have got were, Dane Cook, Stephen Lynch, T-pain, Bobby Lee, Hypnotist guy, and many more.

Kristin

I am invovled with the Student Dietetic Association, which is a group for my major in which we go out amongst CMU's campus and help with nutritionally related programs. When looking at dorm rooms, I can tell from experience that the Towers is the most friendly and open place to be. Living in Carey my freshman year, everyone door was open 24/7. I even had people from other Towers just stop by to say hi and introduce themselves numerous times throughout the year. I have heard that some of the other dorms are a little more reserved, yet I think it is easy for any student to make friends as long as their is some effort. I met my closest friend here within my sorority.

Joseph

This is another great part of CMU. The activities that are on this campus are unlimited. Seeing how there are over 260 registered student organizations, there is a great opportunity to get involved in anything that best fits you personality. The importance of a Fraternity's and sororities on this campus, seems to be growing more and more compared to the earlier years, when they did nothing but party and haze people. Mount Pleasant in itself is a good smaller town. there are multiple things to do on and off campus during the weekends. Whether and program is going on, you go watch a movie, or you go bowling.

jake

im in lambda chi alpha fraternity. theres a good mix with in the greek community, but outside that theres no meshing of student body. the greeks on campus arent welcome by non greeks or administration/professors. they are very frowned apon and believed to be bad students and cheaters. professors mark you down or grade harder if they know your Greek.

Christina

Greek life is a big involvement on our campus, but it could be bigger. Drinking does play a huge role in our community because there is not much else to do at night in Mount Pleasant. Movies are very expensive and you can only go bowling so many times. Athletic events are popular because of tailgating. Most students don't even make it into the games. Our theatre is very small and most students are not interested in the shows. Sometimes, students will turn out for guest speakers, but most of the time, they do not. People party every day of the week.

Tina

GREEK LIFE. Just kidding I dunno. I am involved in a sorority. When I lived in the dorms we kept our door open (at the beg. of the year at least) Athletic events aren't that popular unless there's a tailgate. I like the comedians that come. My closed friends are my best friend from home, my roomate from freshman year, and my family tree in my sorority. I am not awake at 2am on tuesday or I am grumpy because I am studying and all i want to do is sleep. Greek week, thursday bar nights, st. pattys day, tailgate. It depends on the person- each person parties a different amount. Greek life is very important. Last weekend I had mock rock on friday, went out and celebrated. Sat I stayed in with my roomate and cleaned my room. On saturdays I can cuddle in my bed and watch movies, go to the movies, go out to eat, hang out with my roomates, clean my room, or do homework. Well I live off campus so I sleep, do homework, eat, shower, basically daily activities of life.

Ryan

Greek life at Central is growing every year. Most dorms are very friendly living spaces, who truly do leave their doors open. While walking to classes people will hold doors open for you and smile. I like to believe that Central is a very friendly campus. I met my closest friend at Central through my current roommates. It was kind of a fluke incident and we have been best friends every sence. There are many things to do at Central that dont involve drinking. All of our sporting events are free to get into and that helps to get students to go.

Chris

Sigma Alpha Epsilon is a social fraternity that I am a member of. With fraternity and sorority life there is a lot of interaction between groups in things such as IM sports, philanthropy, and socially. This makes it very easy to meet new people from all walks of life and areas of campus that you may never have met otherwise. Some of my closest friends are my brothers in SAE, and through them I have become better acquainted with campus and other groups.

Ryan

well i don't know if there is a more popular group, but greek life plays a big role in my life. when i joined a sorority i had no idea the impact it would have. it has caused me to blossom as my mom would say. i have had so many opertunities throught greek life that i would have never known about if i hadn't joined.

Ben

The social life here is awesome. There are always parties if you want one, groups to get involved in, the towers are a great place to make friends and so on. I believe the fraternities and sororities are very important. It is a great way to make friends and they can help the campus better itself. If we dont want to drink on a Saturday night, then go to the movies, rent a movie, workout, run, homework, play video games, be a DD (designated driver, someone will need one!), etc...
