What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Lane

Most popular fraternities are Delta Chi, SAE, and Sigma Pi, for soroities there are Phi Sigma Sigma, ZTA, Delta Zeta, Sigma Kappa. there also numerous teams that are popular like the Football, Basketball, Baseball, Wrestling, Volleyball, etc. I am involved in Delta Chi, and it has been one of the best decisions in my life. We try to interact as much as we can with the community and try to raise money for our national philanthropy, Jimmy V Foundation. When i lived in the dorm, my door was always open. The most popular athletic event is football games. Alot of the students get really involved with them. I have seen numerous guest speakers. I would say a majority of our school parties atleast 2 times a week. Fraternities and Sororities are very important. They do so much for many organizations by raising money for them. There are atleast 2-3 events a month that pertian to this. Most of the greeks get involved in these events and help each other out.

One of the biggest aspects of my life is my fraternity, Delta Chi. I believe that the greek system here is, although small in numbers, a good greek system. We are all not just a bunch of "frat boys". That's what attracted me most about Greek life as a freshmen. Delta Chi is a social fraternity, and I have some of my best friends in there that I can see myself stayin in touch with for life. However, the fraternity has helped me tremendously academically. I have much better study habits now and my GPA has increased every semester. Tailgating is a huge deal at Central. It is much bigger than Michigan, Michigan State and Western Michigan. As much as we love to tailgate, I don't our athletics are that popular. Aside from football games, we usually don't have huge crowds at any other sporting event. I just think it's kind of hard to get real pumped up for MAC sports, unlike the Big 10 or ACC.

Katelyn

The greek life on campus is a pretty big thing, a lot of people participate and they have some events that make an impact on campus. But if you aren't interested or if it just isn't for you, don't worry there are plenty of other things to get involved in such as honoraries for your department or any of the other numerous groups on campus. People party a lot. You can almost guarantee to find something to do any night of the week if you know the right people. You have to be willing to put yourself out there and get to know people and you are certain to have a good time.

Kristen

I don't know anything about the social life at central.

Nico

I am involved in Delta Zeta and the we are pretty good with athletics ecspecially football so tailgating is always a good time. They also have a lot of guest speakers and there is soo many things to get involved in at central. there is never anything not going on that you can get involved in and it doesn't always involve alcohol.

Doug

There are a lot of things always going on around Campus, OTF Productions and Program Board always have something to go to, and they are all really good too.

Alyse

Greek Life is awesome. It seems to be a key part of CMU's campus. I'm involved with Alpha Gamma Delta, a social sorority. Students in different dorms have different feelings about leaving their doors open - in Woldt, we leave ours open. Athletic events are popular, guest speakers aren't so much I don't think and I think theater isn't very popular either. I met my close friends through Greek Life and by living with them in the dorms (and going to high school with them!). On Tuesday at 2am if I am up, I am calling the RA because the floor above me (Woldt 2nd) is being extremely loud and the RA's aren't doing anything so I'm probably freaking out, losing sleep and my grades are suffering. People usually party once or twice a week (if at all). Fraternities and sororities are VERY important. Last weekend I was participating in Greek Week and celebrating with our partner fraternity. On Saturday night I can hang out with friends, go to a movie, go out to eat, have a girls night in. Lots of stuff.

Eric

Sigma Alpha Epsilon, which I'm involved in, represents leadership and integrity within the Greek Community. The brotherhood represented by this group is second to none on this campus or elsewhere. Members of SAE study, party, hang out, and reside together in the closest of bonds and friendships.

Danny

The most popular groups on campus are the fraternities and sororities. Though they are the most popular RSOs on campus, I don't believe that the school shines enough spotlight on them. I know for a fact that my fraternity, the Delta Chi Fraternity, is involved in plenty and we do even more to give back to the community, to the students, and to the world.

Patrick

If you want to party, there is one out there for you. If not, then that is cool to and there are people who will have fun with you no matter what.

David

CMU offers a lot as a small town to make sure we have fun. There is of course the bar scene, but they offer a lot of recreational activities to keep students busy like rock climbing and bowling. The SAC is a great resource for working out. They have intramural sports any student can join. As well our tailgates are fun and we have a winning football team.

Shelby

It would be hard to select the most popular organization because there are so many that have large numbers. In the dorms most people do leave their dorms and it is very welcoming. If I am up late it us usually cause I am hanging out with friends.

Abbey

Central Michigan activities: party, tailgating, party! Okay not in all cases. Central offers a ton of options if you aren't into getting drunk every Thursday through Saturday (although there are places around Mt. Pleasant if you're into that kind of thing!). Activities are planned literally EVERY night so there's ALWAYS something to do. Guest speakers for you intellectual types, make your own rock pet for all you artists with senses of humor, etc. Personally, I believe you just need to get out and experience college for yourself. For me, it was joining a sorority. That way I get a taste of everything, parties, philanthropy, sisterhood, Greek Week. Whatever your cup of tea is, Central has it.

Timmy

Fun, engaging, something for everyone.

Melanie

Sororities and drinking is about it.

Danielle

I usually play intramural sports with people in my hall at the SAC. I really like being able to meet knew people, so I joined a few extracurricular activities, such as Pre-Physical Therapy Club and On the Fly Productions, where I have been able to meet tons of people. Most people in my dorm do leave their doors open because it is the leadership building and everyone knows each other. People party usually on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. We love going to each others rooms and hanging out and also going shopping around Mt. Pleasant.

Holly

I met my closest friends through being in a social sorority. We do a lot of things together such as attend sporting events and support other greeks philanthropies. I also met a good amount of friends in my major because I have class with them everyday.

Katie

I believe that Greek Life is very popular on our campus. I believe that it is important to get involved at CMU, that is what molds your college life. My sorority has really made the biggest impact on me. I have learned to build bonds with people I wouldn't have. I have learned how to work as a team, and I have truly learned the meaning of friendship. In the residence halls, I believe that most students leave their doors open. Especially in the towers, residence halls are seen as a social place. Athletic events are another thing that draws students. Students at CMU like to tailgate, which may actually cause more problems with rules and regulations. The dating scene here is okay. I haven't had a hard time finding someone :) I have been living with the same girls since my freshmen year. We all went in blind, and I could not imaging better roommates or friends. People party ALL the time. I have noticed, especially this year, that people party every day of the week.

Eric

Sigma Alpha Epsilon provides multiple activities. From philanthropy events to fundraisers to socials, there's never a dull moment.

Tony

Social life is definitely a highlight at CMU. Through Residence Life, Greek Life, and other clubs/organizations networking with students is easy and fun.

Josh

There are numerous activities provided by RSO's such as OTF and Program Board. These can vary from speakers to concerts. There are other activities involving Greek Life dealing from philanthropy's to partying.

Becky

People party here like they do at most any other University across the campus. Greek life is not as vast here as at other campuses, but the population is close and IS growing.

Becky

Dorm life is fun. Many activities to keep busy. Doors are left open most of the time. I met my closest friends in my dorm and at parties or some in classes. I party every weekend. I am not involved with Greek life. I did go out drinking but instead there is bowling or hanging out but there really is no much else to do.

Vicki

Social greeks seem to be the most popular but most hated organizations on campus. I have joined a social greek sorority and I absolutely love it and would not trade it for the world. The athletic events such as football to me seem to be very important to attend because everyone likes to tailgate before the game. In some cases it may not be true.

Whitney

To me I think the most popular groups on campus is the Greek life. Only because it's a huge number of people and it's a social organization so the people that are involved in the groups have a positive attitude about them since they choose to be in them. I'm very involved with my social sorority on campus, I was the VP of my new member class, the philanthropy chair and now the New Member educator, I have been very involved since my freshmen year. When I lived in the dorms I always left my door open but not many people on my floor did. The only athletic event I attend are the football games and even then I don't go to many. I met my closest friends through the social sorority that I'm in. If I'm awake on Tuesday at 2am I'm either leaving the bar, awake doing homework and watching tv. People party all of the time. I go out every Thursday, Friday and Saturday no question, and occasionally on Sunday and Tuesday. Last weekend I had Greek Week Mock Rock on Friday, was a model for the fashion show at CMU on Saturday and went out Saturday night. If I don't do something that involves drinking on a Saturday night I'm either home or DD-ing for my sorority. Off campus I volunetter.

Owen

popular groups are greek life, student government. How many doors are open in a hall would depend on where the location is. On north campus, where I live, students are really involved and are in the honors program. My closest friends are my room mate and the sisters of my sorority. If I were awake at 2 am on a Tuesday, I would either be studying or watching TV. Athletic events are popular. Some traditions are homecoming and some of the other holidays have certain events. Last weekend was Greek Week and formal. Off campus there is dining, bowling, skating, shopping.

Shelby

I'm involved with the fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon; this is a fraternity comprised of campus leaders.

Lauren

The most popular organizations are Leadership organizations and Greek social organizations. There are many professional groups and fraternities that are popular on campus as well. I have been in a sorority since my freshman year, and I have learned to be very involved in campus through this. We attend speaker sessions and I am personally bringing a speaker to campus in a few weeks on how to improve recruitment in groups. Last weekend was the end of Greek Week and my sorority's formal. I did not drink much, as I was so exhausted from the week before. On a Saturday night when I am not drinking, I like to watch movies, go out to dinner, or play board games with friends.

Bryanna

Students in my dorm always left their dorms open, but the majority of the students were enrolled in the Honors College. Football games are a must, especially tailgating. Central/Western weekend is huge (CMU vs. WMU football game). My closest friends are people from high school (not necessarily friends from high school) or people I met in my dorm my freshman year.

Allie

If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday it is probably because I just got home from O'Kellys, having enjoyed dollar pints all evening.

Ryan

CMU knows how to have fun. The night life is much better than people let on. There is always something to do and our school brings in great speakers and performers.

Jerry

Good community to have a social life.

Ali

It's a great place to meet new people. The greek life is awesome and other student organized groups are just as wonderful. You truly become close with the people you share many common interests in. There is always something going on.

james

im not really involved with any groups but ive hung out with alot of them and they are fun and they all bring something different to the table

Seth

Central is a very social and active campus. There is also some organization sponsored event going on around campus.

kelly

In my opinion the most popular sororities are: Phi Sigma Sigma Zeta Tau Alpha Delta Zeta Sigma Kappa The most popular frats are: Phi Sigma Phi Sigma Pi Delta Chi A lot of people go to the bars (Pub, Wayside/OKellys/Bird) I met all of my close friends either though the dorms or though Greek Life.

Samantha

I am part of the Delta Zeta sorority and I love it. I know a lot of other girls and guys that are part of a different sororities or fraternities and they love it too. On Saturdays instead of drinking you can go bowling or skating. There is a lot to do besides party.

Alex

The Greeks are popular on campus, and there are four strong sororities: Delta Zeta, Zeta Tau Alpha, Tri Sigma and Phi Sigma Sigma. Many freshmen dorms leave their doors open but in the upperclassmen dorms, they tend to stay closed. If I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday it's because I'm drunk. People usually go out Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Emily

Central michigan has a great social life, my objective might be scewwed due to the fac tthat i am in a sorority

Anja

Social life is alot of fun at Central. Being in a sorority has been alot of fun, there are many funraisers that you can attend for Greek life at CMU and its a great way to meet people.

Robin

Greek life is AMAZING!! I would recommend anyone to get involved in it!! Sigma Kappa is where it's at!

Amanda

Greek organizations would probably be the most popular. We have lots of sisterhoods, philanthropic events, socials, and fundraisers. Our athletic events are not very popular, the only athletic event people attend is football and sometimes we can't even get enough people to go to the game for attendance purposes for the MAC. Greek Life usually requires us to attend some speakers on campus and they usually turn out to be worth while. The hangouts up here are the bars. We have a downtown area that has a bunch of cute bars then we have O'kellys. Especially since I just turned 21, on any given night my friends and I will be at a different bar. A lot of people hang around main street as well. If we don't drink on a saturday usually we will just hangout at our house and play rock band, or go to the movies.

Kathleen

Many of the students who live in the dorms leave their doors open so that they can have the chance to interact with the people who live on their floor or in the building. I think that it is a good way to get to know people or to just say hello. One of the most popular things to do on campus is to go to the athletic events and to guest speakers when they are here. We love to show our school spirit and support out athletes in any way that we can. We also love when guest speakers come because it gives us a chance to learn about ourselves and others and issues that the world is facing right now.

Dawson

I am involved in a social sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma. Going greek was the best decision of my life, I don't know what I would do without my sisters. I know that all greeks say that but it is so true. We do so much stuff for the community such as raising money, raking leaves, collecting teddy bears for our annual teddy bear drive. We also participate in other fraternity and sororities philanthropic events, such as Lambda Chi Alpha's taco dinner, or ladies night, delta zeta's pancake breakfast...the list goes on. I met my closest friends through the sorority, you spend a lot of time with other greeks and you just have the time of your life. I came to college wanting to make friends and I'm leaving with the best ones of my life. When I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday there are so many things that I could be doing. One, working, two hanging out with friends, three at the bar, or four relaxing wiht my roomates having heart to hearts or laughing hystarically at some silly story. Getting involved in something on campus is the most important thing to do in college because otherwise you will get sucked into probably partying a lot. By getting involved you will have options to do on a Saturday night other than a party. You will meet people that are just like you with the same interests, you may go on trips, or particpate in volunteer activities. Getting involved and staying involved is my biggest advice for an incoming freshmen, you don't realize how important it is to stay busy because otherwise you will get yourself in trouble.

Kristi

I love the social life at Central. If you walk through a dorm at night, you are more than likely to find almost every door open and students interacting. Althletic events, speakers, and other programs are very popular because they are free of charge to any central student. Most people meet their new friends through living with them or being apart of the same group/organization. I am a part of the Delta Zeta sorority and I'll be honestly when I say that sororities and fraternities are not very important to those on our campus. Only about 3-8{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of our campus is greek.. and what most people dont know is that we contribute to over 70{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the money raised for the community. Most people think of us as just a bunch of people who party and don't realize how much we do for the community, or that we have to maintian a certian GPA and do study hours, or that we have socials with other groups to meet people who may not be the same as us and learn from them. We are extremely overlooked.

Kristi

Our greek i feel is one of the best in Michigan, its quite large, no hazing laws are strictly enforced and we have a chapter in my eyes that fits everyone. I also am involved with the volunteer center and love it. I also am in a few different Leadership activities in which are advancing me too.

Jennifer

Greek life is the greatest! It's a nice connection and a great way to know people. Sorority life leads to lifelong friendship and a home away from home. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made!

Alyssa

Sororities, fraternities and sports are the most popular groups on campus. I am a part of Delta Zeta and it has been an amazing experience being a part of this group. It has introduced me to many people and leadership opportunities. Some students leave their doors open in the dorms but not all. The athletic events are not that popular. Most people date people that they met at a party or at the bar. I met my closest friends through Delta Zeta. People party all the time. On a Saturday you could go bowling or to the movies for activities that do not involve drinking.

Maureen

I think that all of the on campus organizations are good because they get people involved and help build freindships and connections for life.

Chelsea

greek life is very popular on this campus. being part of a sorority, i think it is one of the best ways to get involved at cmu. there are certain nights that everyone goes out and has fun...tues, thursdays and the weekend. people party quite a bit and have fun.
