What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Melissa

I have only completed one semester so far but I have learned so much already. I have learned about myself, the people around me, new habits, and what I want to do with my future. Attending Central Michigan has so far been very valuable, it has led me to so many different experiences I would have never considered. Living with strangers to majoring in computer science as well as graphic design are some of the things I never would have imagined myself doing. College has taught me responsibility, time management, and to pay attention to the fine details. I am growing as a person because of this opportunity and I expect to continue to be open to new opportunities and learn as much as possible while I am here.

Samantha

In college, I have learned, like all students, how to live by myself. I have learned that it is very important to keep track of your time with homework and social life. College has definatley allowed me to have the space away from my parents to grow up. Being in college helps you develop many social skills too. You are in a place where at most you know two percent of the college's population. I have gotten the chance to meet so many new people and descover who I am. It has helped me be me. I think college is a very valuable part of life because you get the biggest oppertunity to grow as a person. I was very fortunate to get the chance to experience life away from home. Its important to be able to discover who you are for yourself. Not only have I had the chance to discover who I am, furthering my education is a blessing. A lot of people do not get to further their education. I get to have more job opportunities. I am very fortunate and I think college is an exprerience that everyone should have.

Coming out of high school, I was not certain I wanted to attend a university. After being here four years, I am so thankful that I have. The lessons I have learned these past few years cannot be measured. They are priceless. Each semester I feel I am becoming more and more capable to succeed in my field. I feel that I am gaining the expertise and knowledge to be a good leader and worker for my career ahead, and I am getting more and more anxious to graduate and change the world by enhancing the quality of life for those around me. But college is not only giving me the tools to complete a job I am passionate about doing, it is also teaching me life skills, like the ability to relate to people who live and think very differently than I do. One thing I will take away from this college experience is that I will never stop learning from those around me. It is the people who are the most different from us who we learn the most from. My name is Bethany Juen, and I am a Commercial Recreation major at Central Michigan University.

Nicole

I am currently in the process of transferring colleges. I was attending a four year university as a major in elementary education. When I finished my first year, I realized I was not satisfied. The classrooms were big, and we were lectured at on a daily basis. There was very little, if any, individualized attention. At the time, I was also experiencing problems at home, which didn't help my school situation. I finally decided to switch majors to general studies, and just take general education classes until I figured out what I wanted to do with my life. I started looking at transferring to other colleges, but was still unsure of what I wanted to do. Then I discovered Brown Mackie College - Fort Wayne. I took a tour and had an interview, and was accepted to study to be a veterinary technician. I have never been more excited to attend school. Animals are my passion, and being able to help them is my life-long dream.

Ashley

Entering college has been a whole new world. It has taught me how to become a better student, learn to live with people, and break out of my comfort zone. In college, you must make sure you do the reading and learn what is necessary for the class. I have learned how to manage my time between classes and the best ways to study to ace my classes. At home, I always had my own bedroom and bathroom, and after moving to the dorms, I had to get used to sharing a small room with another person I had never met before and sharing a small bathroom with three other girls. It has been really valuable to learn how to live and work with other people. As for breaking out of my comfort zone, it can be scary meeting new people and not knowing anyone in class. College has helped me open up, talk to new people without having the comfort of my high school friends, and join clubs and organizations to meet new people. College has really helped me become a more independent person and helped me overcome real life challenges. It has been a great experience so far!

Monique

I have met great people during my college experience so far. There are many people that are willing to help you. There are so many resources to take advantage of in order to succeed. I learned that you have to study harder and actually known the material. This has made me more dedicated to my work and to learn. It has also made me think more about my future and what my major will be. College has turned me into a better student and a independent individual.

Jordan

I have been attending community college since my sophomore year in high school. Doing so has shaped me in many ways—not just on an educational level, but from a personal perspective as well. I've always been self disciplined and driven to achieve my goals, but taking college level courses has made me more aware of what those goals are and what type of effort it takes to achieve them. It has allowed me to become more organized and independent when it comes to my school work and has taught me quite a bit that I am confident will stick with me throughout the rest of my life. As I mentioned, I feel that the college experience has shaped me from a personal standpoint and has molded me into a more self-aware, motivated young adult. I'm a believer that each experience we go through in life shapes us into who we will eventually become and I feel that the opportunity to attend college has definitely been one of those experiences. Thus far, it has been valuable to me in many ways and I know that it will continue to be as I push farther in my studies.

Brandon

In high school I was torn between attending a community college and a large university; basically a decision, in my mind, between saving money and having fun. But now that I'm here at college, I found out it's not only fun that college has to offer. My old chemistry teacher always responded with a certain quote when we told him something was unfair: recognize, adapt, and overcome. Thus, the most important thing I've gotten out of my college experience is learning how to do these three things. By that, I mean I have been tossed into a building with 300 other teenagers I don't know and been told to get along with them, study hard, have a social life, get a job, clean up my own messes, do my own laundry, and a million other things. My time so far at college has just been a giant learning experience and I continue to learn every day. I've gained valuable life experience, common knowledge (and a little academic knowledge), maturity, personal skills, and decision making skills. The things I've gained from my experience in college are the most valuable part of my life so far.

Joanna

I think that college is vaulable to attend because without a college education you can not get a good career or make decent money. College is one of the most important things that a person can do, without a degree a person can not do anything except retail or some other dead end job. With a college education you can have a career that challenges you and fullfills you. People that says college is a waste of time are just afraid to go to school and learn new things. If you want to be successful in life then you got to learn something everyday so that you don't stagmate.

Jacquelyn

Honstly to pick just one word to describe my college experience I would choose growth. I do not know the person I would be today if I had chosen a different univeristy to attend. I have become friends with people I may have never given the time of day in high school, I've learned what it is like to be living on my complete own, having to pay my bills. I have learned to adapt to other people, and live with 7 other girls for two of my years in college. I have experienced how to communitcate with professors when I need advice on something. I have matured tremedously over the past 3 and a half years, I can't find the words to beging to explain. This college has given me a sense of belonging and community that I know I could not have gotten anywhere else. This school has giving me opportunites and experiences that I will forever look back on and be proud of. I love this school and will forever be a Chippewa! :)

Stephanie

Throughout life, I have been told that college is different from what I know, it's extremely serious in the workload and my whole life’s success or failure is based on the passage of college. To some extent this is true however; college is more than books and essays. It's more than endless lectures and balancing classes with work and friends. College can't be taught on a white bored or online. If you think about it, from all that i have mentioned, college is not too different than secondary schools. Therefore, the experience and the value of attending college I have received has simply came from the ability to learn with those I live with and the ability to live with others before living on my own. The ability to make connections and form groups of voice and change that was not as strong or existent before. It’s the ability to become independent, make choices and become aware of bills as I handle situations like the adult I learn to be. College is still a choice. More and more people choose to pay for college, not just for the degree, but for this experience.

Melanie

There have been many things I have got out of my experience. It's been a long but very fast 4 years. I have made friendships that will last forever. I love my friends from home, but nothing compares to your college friends. It's almost like a different friendship meaning you living with these people, you party with these people, you go to school with them. You're constantly with these people which also helps you realize a lot of things. Living with people makes you learn patience and the ability to share experiences and feelings. You develop a very close bond with them. Also, college opens your eyes to the diversity and uniqueness in the world. There is so much out there that we don't know about and we need to know. Going to college, especially away to school, makes you experience situations that maybe you would have never experienced. Of couse, I also learned the value of an education and the value of money. Spending thousands and thousands of dollars may sound ridiculous but in the end it will be worth it.

Evan

WIthout college I wouldn't have much of a future. It helps me to achieve my dreams and form the life I want for myself. I want to be able to give my future children and wife the life they deserve. Most importantly I want to give my mother what she deserves for being there for me every day, helping to pay for my education, and giving me the chance to make my dreams come true. She is the reason college became a necessity for me. She stressed the importance of going to school and I'm glad she did. College has been a lot of fun and hard work. You meet mew friends and learn how to live on your own. You make decisions, good or bad, and live life. To me, that is what college is all about.

Tammy

I’ve retained a lot so far. Prior to me attending college I had a lot of questions: Why this? Why are things this way? Why things aren’t this way? College has helped shape my perspective of the world. It has also made me socially conscious of the world in which we live in. It has also strengthened my cognitive ability and desire to make a difference in the world. Far as value, yes, I would say very valuable. Although the accumulated debt that you inherit, sometimes out weight your paycheck, education is priceless. It opens your mind to think, discover and conquer.

Animals are the love of my life and always have been. Therefore, when I was in high school and was told to decide on a career, I picked veterinarian. During my senior year, I was in the Running Start program at Lower Columbia College (LCC). I took Intro to Biology with Carl Roush. He reopened my eyes to the world of biology. My mom and I researched what I could pursue in this field. That's when I found Wildlife Biology. Now, I am at LCC working towards a Biology degree. After I acheive a biology degree, I plan to transfer and continue studying biology. I love the atmosphere that has been created in all of my classes. The same people that I study with have become my friends and people I call when in need of company. We all have a similar goal. We just want it for different reasons. Teamwork is introduced and used everywhere on campus. Almost every class I have been in at LCC has had a team assignment. History, English, Spanish, Biology, and Chemistry have all been very instructive, well delivered classes with teamwork assigned. Overall, I really enjoy the LCC campus, teachers and experience.

Vanessa

So far my first year of college has been nothing like what i expected. My classes have been interesting and engaging. My professors have been available and ready to answer any questions that I may have. Along with great academic experience I have met so many new people that I would have never met if it wasn’t for my choice of attending Central Michigan. I will walk away with a large amount of knowledge and great memories.

Gerald

It has been 30 Yrs since I have been in school. I was afraid to go back to school, but once I got started at Intellitec, the instructor were very helpful. If I needed help writing an essay paper they would help me. I wish now that I would not have waited so long to go back to school. I was a C student in H.S. and am carrying a 3.9 GPA right now, so it has really boosted my self-confidence. It has shown me that with a little work and devotion I can succeed at something that I have had a desire for since I was a young boy.

Jenna

During my three semester at Central Michigan University, I have experienced the different between high school and college. I've realized that in college, I actually have to study in order to pass my exams and there are no excuses for not turning in work. Besides the school work being harder, I have met some of the most amazing people. My freshman year, my roommate and I became very close and are now best friends. We are still currently rooming together and next year, plan on living together in an apartment. By going to college at Central Michigan University, I will have great job opportunities in my future and will be a successful woman who will enjoy everything she does.

Nicholle

I have learned so much from just my first semester at college. I have grown more confident in my abilities to achieve the goals that I have set for myself. I am more able to talk and get along with new people who come from different bakgrounds. I have developed long-lasting connections with the people I have met on campus. Moreover, I have learned to push myself out of my comfort zone to experience new opportunities which I most likely would not have done without going to college. For example, I ran a 5K sponsered by my colleges's triathlon club. In addition, the classes which I am taking are preparing me well for graduate school. I am confident when the time comes to send in my application for graduate school, I will be accepted. My college experience has been unforgettable, and I look forward to furthering my education next year.

Rachel

I have become a leader. A bigger leader than I thought I ever could have been. I have participated in many conferences and leadership programs that have made me who I am today. Something unique about Central Michigan University is the Leadership Safari program. It is the first week before classes start where all the incoming freshman move in early and they are separated into groups that let you get to know upperclassmen early on in the year and your peers. Everyone is always nervous for college and Leadership Safari is something I think many more school should adopt on their campus. I currently am in the midst of starting another Registered Student Organization on campus for Love146, an organization to end child sex slavery and exploitation. Central's campus is so inviting to new leaders and it makes you want to get out and be involved with as much as you can!

Kristen

Out of my college experience, so far, I have gotten the chance to prove that I am a responsible and hard-working student. Because I am attending Central Michigan University, I am able to prove to myself, my family, and my friends that I am intelligent and are fully equipped to take responsibility for my own life and decisions. This is also why it has been valuable to attend. I have aquired great time-management skills, and feel as though I am a pro at handling the stresses of college life.

Allison

I have gained a better sense of independance and self-reliance. This is so valuable because I like to "pawn" responsibility onto others if I become too busy. I've had to learn when to say "No, I have too much going," and when to let others step up. As I am going into teaching, I have to account for my own actions and constantly keep up a good image because so many are watching my actions. I could lose the opportunity to become a teacher if I slip up once. I've also learned through this to prioritize. I realize what is important and what is just fun. College has helped to push me closer toward the person I want to become.

Tyler

So far my college experiance has been great. I have made a lot of new friends and I have learned a lot of new things. When coming to Central Michigan University I did not know that I would meet so many new friend and have so much fun while also getting a great education. It has been so valuable to attend here at Central Michigan University because the campus is the perfect size to where you can get to all of your classes by walking and there are alway people trying to help you out when you need it. We have tutors for every class and the tutors are students that excel in which ever subject you need the help in so they know where you are at because they have recently taken the class and they know what it is like. Attending Central Michigan University has been one of the most valuable things (If not the most valuable thing) that I have put my money into in my whole life.

isilia

First of all i have gotten knowledge of what college is and to manage it. Also, i have gained experience and have learned things i didn't know.

Ashley

So far out of my college experience I have gotten a good education and made friends who probably will be my friends throughout my life. I have become way more outgoing then I have ever been. I feel comfortable enough to show everyone who my true self is and they won't judge. I also feel I am growing into a stronger more independent person.

Andrea

I have realized who I am. I have changed my major three times now and I really should have just taken general education classes until I decided what I really wanted to do. I have finally decided on the major that I want to do but I am kind of glad that I did try out other majors too. If I had just stayed with my first major I would probably be done with college, but I would be miserable, I am glad that I got the opportunity to change my major. I have also made a lot of life long friends.

Ashley

I have gotten a whole new life. I used to think there wasn't much in the way of opportunity for me due to my disability. I felt like I might spend my whole life on SSI. I hated that thought! Going to college helped me see that with training I will be able to enter the work place at some point even though I cannot currently. I see a bright future for my little boy and I that doesn't include goverment assistance. This thought keeps me going even on the days it hurts to get out of bed. So if I were to use just one word to summarize what I've gotten out of college it would be confidence. I no longer feel "disabled" and like a burden that society will forever take care of. I've learned I'm valuable, capable and that I have something to give back.

I was in Towson University's Tiger Marching Band, or as we like to call it, the Towson University World Famous Tiger Marching Band. Being a member of this great band gave me a sense of pride. All four years of my undergraduate education I spent with the band. When I first joined in the Fall of 2006, we were just a regular ol' university marching band only making appearances at Towson's football games. Then something big happened. In the Spring of 2008 it was announced that we would be performing in the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade! News got around to the University and suddenly we were no longer just a university marching band. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade summed up the end of my eight-year marching band career on a high note (very high, like piccolos), with my head held high and my eyes with pride. Now, I have 200 great friends that I met through the Towson University Marching Band. However, the most amazing part is the sense of university spirit I gained by attending college which an incredibly valuable experience and a connection I will always have with my alma mater.

College has been the biggest transition for me thus far. As a freshman, I am still getting acclimated to this new lifestyle and independence. College represents a significant investment to me. Not only does it allow you to compete for your place in society but it aids you in finding yourself in the process. My education will lay down the foundation for my future endeavors. the opportunities I have been presented would have never been an option without college. I have a variety of things that I want to accomplish. Some of them include becoming the first African American woman U.S. press secretary, establishing my own PR/ Advertising firm, obtaining my law degree and masters simultaneously, becoming a CEO for a fortune 500 company, and even working as teacher at my high school to reach back. I know that achieving these goals cannot be accomplished without the proper education. College to most people is an option, but to me it is a priority. With college, I will be able to service others. College allows you to acquire knowledge, obtain insight and experience, meet diverse people from all walks of life, and to solidify your future.

Wow, when i started at Sinclair i knew nothing. I was taught about textiles, fabrics, how they react and hold up to light, fire and ware and tear, i can identify many different types of textiles as well. I was taught terms that i will use on a daily basis in the real world, and i learned how to work with a team on a project. That was something different in itself because before we were only given assignments to complete on our own. I learned how to draft by hand drawing and draft drawings on the computer in Autocad, the computer system that allow you to do so many different things quickly and efficiently. I learned all about shading, whether it was precise drawing or sketchiness projects from my teacher. I learned so much but i still have much to learn. My brain is still thirsty, and the more i learn, the more successful i will become.

Fernando

Once I entered college, I was able to realize that college life is totaly different from high school life. In college I was forced to become independent from my parents, who have done literally everything for me. I was never dependent thus I had a rough start the first days of my college life. What I know is that I can make a living on my own without the help of my parents, but when I need them I know they will be there.

Frank

I attend Cuyahoga Community College and right now am pursuing an associates degree of applied science in Human Services. What I have gotten out of my college experience is not only growing up and maturing, but also the knowledge to create the future I want to give to myself and hopefully to others. To have empathy and an open mind for others is something I think I had but the proffesors I had/have made it come out more by showing me how to express it and what I as an individual can do with it to help someone . Not only the professors I have and continue to meet, but also the people I have met that I have classes with have become not only friends but probably long time connections to helping me help others. The reason why it has been so valuable to attend is simple, its because I want a future, and my future starts with attending college. When I learn something new I can't wait to try and implement it in real life. It is valuable to me because I get to know that I get self satisfaction as well as satisfying and helping others

Sara

College is THE resource to get a job, hence it has been very valuable to my life. I have grown as a person as well as a student. I am going into the psychology field after graduate school; so everyday in class I learn how to help people. I think that's an amazing skill to have and be able to do in life. I want to better other's lives by understanding them and being able to help one in his or her situation. This is what Central Michigan University is helping me become and teaching me how to influence other's lives for the better. I know that I will not be able to touch everyone's lives that need help but being able to help at least one individual makes me feel good about my career choice in life. Central Michigan University is helping me get closer to my career goals each and everyday.

Tyler

I think the easiest way to answer this question is to say that I learned how to live on my own; independently. That would be easy but not sufficient. It's not a specific enough answer. It doesn't give anyone a good sense of what I learned at college. So, while attending college I learned how to manage my money. I had to do my own laundry at the laundry mat, pay for my own food, and pay for my own gas. I couldn't take a spring break trip or buy the next great video game because of what I really needed the money for. I also learned how to get involved. I've done two community service activities and got involved in campus activities to get out there and break my inclusive shell. I've met some interesting people and experienced some great things, such as comedians, leadership camp, and siblings weekend (as a non-sibling participant). I also attended an interesting "My dog knows calculus" presentation. Yes, I learned how to live on my own but it's more than that. I learned valuable life skills, broke out of my shell, and learned money management.

Alyssa

My college experience has encouaged my growth in acedemic, social, and financial areas. In acedeme, my classes at Central have been very discussion orientined. These classes have forced me to think through problems and not only understand facts or possess opinions, but also develop strong reasoning skills to answer questions and solve problems. In the social wold, Central has provided me with countless opportunites to experience something outside my comfort zone. I was abe to participate in Leadership Safari, walk in a Martin Luther King Peace March, attend Slam Poetry competitions, and even experience a Drag Queen Show. All these new experiences pushed my limits, introducing me to new people and new opportunies along the way. Attending college has also introduced me to the world of finances. Paying for college has been a definite challenge and has taught me the value of money and the hard work it takes to make it. College has helped me grow so much in the past year, I can only hope the next few years are as life-altering as the first.

Shara

I have a lot of goals and I see college as my gateway to achieving those goals. i have a strong passion to get involved in psychology because of the personal challenges that I have gone through. It is important to me that childeren have love and stability in their lives. But there are many that don't I want to show the underprivilaged chileren that there are people out there. Just like my teacher in high-school showed me. I have not yet attended classes yet. I will however be moving on campus by the 14 of August.

Tiffany

What I have gotten out of my time at Central Michigan University is a lot of leadership experience. Being involved in Central Michigan University's Leadership Institute as a Leadership Advancement Scholar, I have been subject to leadership camps, speakers, clubs and organizations, and even the faciliation of leadership events on campus. Protocol from my Leadership Advancement Scholarship requires that I participate in two or more Registered Student Organization's on campus, attend at least one leadership-related speaker per semester, hold a leadership position in one of the organizations or clubs I am involved in, as well as put on a leadership-related event on CMU's campus. Thus, involvement on CMU's campus is highly encouraged, even if you are not involved in the Leadership Institute. However, most students are! In fact, the Leadership Minor is the largest minor at CMU! Overall, CMU and CMU's Leadership Institute have allowed me to become actively involved on my campus, as well as improve on my leadership abilities.

Lindsay

The college experience has been wonderful for me. I came from a very dysfuntional home and had financial struggles my entire life, so coming to college opened my eyes to a world full of opportunity. I not only am aware of the infinite options I would have for my future, but I get constant support. I have learned to be responsible for my own actions and my good grades are a result of a newfound version of time maintenance. It has been very valuable, to say the least, to attend a University because I am developing the knowledge and skills I need to create a better life for myself. Since my father passed away following my junior year of high school, I was determined to take the most out of a college experience and do that seriously.

Lauren

My first year college experience at Central Michigan University has made me discover many new things including finding a new for the arts, making new friends, and learning how to live on my own. I feel that at any other university I would not have been able to learn and grow as much as I have. Central is a remote school, basically in the middle of nowhere, where many students all have the same belief that they wouldn?t attend any other university besides this one.

PETER

i have learn alot of things from my college and iam still learning. i have learn to give quality care to my patients at work. i have learn to value and treat each human being with dignity regardless of race, color or ethnicity. iam handling different cultures lifestyle, learning them in order to accomodate each invividual culture in my care. each human being has unique way of handling or dealing with their day to day crisis, i have been trained to to treat each person in ways that will make that person feel appreciated. i value what i have learn and my desire is to learn more.

Susan

My experience at CMU prepared me for a teaching career. I was on hiatus from teaching for many years, but am ready to return now. It was a wonderful feeling to discover that, although my degree is not as "fresh" as some, I was able to pass three Illinois state teaching proficiency exams with flying colors! I am still in contact with many people I met while I was a CMU student. I have wonderful memories of my classes, professors, and of dorm life. CMU helped me become a responsible adult with a lot to give.

rebecca

I have not had the privilage to attend college yet. I am trying to apply for scholarships and financial aid to be able to do so.

Grace

I've made friends at CMU who are like another family to me, supportive and fun. I've learned to have a more open mind, and accept and respect people who are different then me instead of judging them for their beliefs, race, or sexual orientation. I've learned just how valuable music education really is to our school system, which makes me even more passionate and excited to become a music educator! The experiences I've had both good and bad have taught me lessons, and shaped me into the person I am today; and I would not change that experience for anything.

Ryan

From the time that I started attending to now, I have grown so much in many aspects. I have found that at college one is not taught, but taught to teach himself or herself. Coming from a very small school with a graduating class of about fifty students, attending a huge university such as CMU was truly a culture shock. I grew up in the country and with such a small school, one could really get to know teachers and friends with little to no effort. College has taught me to be self sufficient and to also be efficient. It has been valuable to me because I know that in the job fields that I want to go into, I will be my own motivation. Not only will I have to push myself to succeed, but I will need to be efficient and do quality work. Dentistry is the field that I am interested in and the career that I am pursuing. CMU has many events that relate to diversity and expanding one's mind to new things and people. I feel that this is a very valuable experience and will help further my career goals.

Caitlin

I have learned self-disicipline and that if I set my eye on my goals, I can achieve them. My school has also taught me to never be discouraged my bumps in life and they will always be there to help through complications I may face while in college.

Sanya

I have received a great education and a life lessons. I can never regret any education, because it has taught me so many things I would not have taken upon myself on my own time. Life lessons, that just comes with the package. I have had the most stubborn, ignorant professors that have tested my patience and I have had the kindest, challenging professors that pushed me forward. I have had counselors that lead me in the wrong direction academically and I have had two advisors who got me out of the disaster that was created from the others. When most of us go to school, we're just getting out of high school, just learning our limits in life and how to grow up. It is a huge change for the better and for the worst...the journey is what has been important, not the destination. However, I hope my degree leads me to an amazing destination!

Valerie

My college experience has allowed me to grow as an adult and to learn many important things. I have become a better worker, learning to manage time more efficiently and by becoming more self reliant. I understand more about responsibility and why it is important to take charge of yourself and your goals. Things will not just happen on their own without you putting your best foot forward and working your hardest. College has opened my eyes to many new opportunities.

Brian

So far, the best thing I have gotten from my experience here at CMU is meeting the International students. I made many friends with them, one being my roommate, I learned a lot about their culture and also how similar they are to us. Many of them moved back after the end of the semester and it's been a bit different without them here, so they have made a huge impact on me and how my first semester started off. I still remain in contact with them all and will continue to do so in the future.

Carli

When most people look back on college they remember the great friends, the great memories and the great parties. But for me college was a place where I grew as a person, truly found out a lot about myself and began my life into adulthood. To finally be able to be out on your own and making your own decisions is a huge part of the learning experience at college. Being miles away from home you know your family is only a phone call away but you begin to rely more on yourself and the other around you to get through. College is the experience that has truly prepared me for the rest of my life in the real world. The responsibility, the lessons in communication with friends and also professors, it has prepared me for everything I have experienced since leaving school in 2004. Since leaving college I have learned to value all of my experiences that I had, they have all made me into the successful person that I am today.

The most valuable thing I have gotten out of attending Central Michigan University is a sense of worth. It is definitely not what I expected to gain from college, but the feeling is overwhelming. In high school nothing challenged me and I was bored, it was rare for me to really enjoy material I was learning no matter how challenging the class was. Now that I am in college I love my classes because I know it is helping me achieve my goals. I feel empowered and in charge of my future. I have even decided to take more challenging classes, including another foreign language, to make me accessible to all students. I also love how in college it is easy for me to get involved in the community through different groups that will help me in the future. I never expected to feel this way about college. I came into this school and was blown away by everything I can do for my future and am constantly trying to make myself better so that I can be the best special education teacher possible.
