I called my dad multiple times a day. Phoning home was a part of my daily routine to tell my dad about all the awesome things I was doing at Chapman.
Yes I think that is too much. I talk to my parents about once a week, or more if I need help with something or need advice. You really won't come into your own and become your own person if you are talking to your parents every single day.
It honestly depends on your relationship with your parents. No matter what you should phone them after your 1st day, even if they won't admit it, they want to know how it went. If you have a relationship where you are super close once a day isn't too much, but I think you should at least do it once a week, more if you feel like you and your parents would benefit from it.
It depends on your family. If you're super close, two or three times a week just to check in is fine. If you family is busy, set up a once a week call. If your family has time, go for it, call once a day if you have something to talk about. Don't feel obligated to tell your family every little detail of what you're doing every second of the day though because if they wanted to know that, they would've been right there next to you through college
