What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Danielle

Being in college is very stressful. If i can go back in time and sit down and talk too my high school self, I will tell her college is a different ball game from high school. I'll let her know classes are harder and is no joke. Being in class and on time is very important, if your late too class you'll miss out on important announcements / information and you dont want too miss that. But if you dont attend class at all your missing out on alot things but most important your missind assignments. When you miss assigments in college its hard too catch up. I'll also tell her too apply for scholarships, its very easy too apply and the money you'll receive can really help you out during college.

Going back in time to my high school days, I would tell myself to excel in my classes and study hard. Having a good educational foundation and background will help me to advance professionally as a student. I would also advise myself to take the SAT's seriously and prepare months ahead of time. Excellent SAT scores open doors to financing education. Lastly, I would make myself aware that there are thousands of scholarships available, and to start searching for them at the end of my Junior year, so I will have enough time to polish my applications to perfection.

I WOULD PAY MORE ATTENTION TO WHAT MY TEACHERS AND COUNSLERS WAS TELLING ME. I WOULD HAVE TOOKEN SCHOOL MORE SERIOUSLY AND GOT BETTER GRADES.

I have got a since of importance out of my college education. With college you cant get very far in life. I want to attend college to better myself and my family. I want to make the myself, my family, and the world proud. College is one of the greatest things that was created. Getting an education is worth the hard work, the staying up late, and the stressing. Everything will pay off in thre long run. Without and education you cant get very far in live. You can get a good job, you cant take care of a family, let alone yourself. You have to make yourself known you to the world and to the work community and there isnt a better way to do it. Ye ofcourse your going to have to take out some loans but in the end it will all pay off. I wish everyone would take the extra mile and make there dreams come true. I know I am. So in the words or Barack Obama "YES WE CAN" and i know "I CAN".!

I have made some life long friendships. I have experienced living away from home which is helping me transition into being on my own. I have made some very important life decisions. And am on my way to becoming a very responsible adult. College has helped me to become more responsible.

My college experience so far has been challenging, I have been struggling financially because I am an out of state student. What I've learned so far is that coming to college is an eye opening experience. You are on your own and there is no one here to hold your hand. You have to take the initiative to see about your finances and make sure that you don't take out more loans than you can pay back. It will be the time when you have to grow up really fast and start taking responsibility for your education and ultimately your future. I regret not staying in state for my first year of college, thats what I've gotten so far out of my college experience.

Amber

What i have gotten out of my college experience is the feeling of independacy and hands on learning. I feel good that i made it this far to be able to get into college because i have had so many obstacles trying to stop me from getting ahead and i just pushed through without giving up. Me being the first one in my family to attend college is a dream that has come true. I feel as though it was not only my dream but as well as my mothers dream. God rest her soul but i am going further and further to make her more and more proud of me as she looks down at her 1st child setting an example for my younger siblings. College is tough but its worth it because my award at the end is to recieve my degree and have the career in the feild that i am passionate about and that i enjoy doing. I mean, who doesnt enjoy meeting new people and making people feel better and handle situations. The main reason why i want this career is because i know i have been through so much and i can help someone.

I got a degree out of my college experience and it was valuable to attend because I am able to help other students and children through academia.

valerie

My college experience was absolutely rewarding, Not only did I have the opportunity to enhance my knowledge of Psychology and Education, I was able to also experience professors who went above and beyond to assure that their students learned and were productive in their respective fields. Internships and student teaching opportunities were also a valuable part of my college experience.

Immediately after graduating highschool, I attended a university to pursue a bachelor's degree in nursing. I completed all of my prerequisities and unfortunately, i was not accepted. I then proceeded to retake some courses to raise my GPA. As a result, i still did not get in. An advisor suggested a technical college in the area offering an LPN program. It was not my original plan in mind but i figured i'd give it a shot. 16 months later, i am now graduating with a greater knowlegde of nursing than i had ever had before -- I even got accepted into another accredited college to pursue my associates' degree in nursing to become a registered nurse, like originally anticipated. This is experience has taught me that if one continues to fall, he or she can always revive themselves with determination and hardwork. Even though i applied twice to a previous university and did not get in, I refused for that to be the determining factor for my future.

Various students worldwide do not get the opportunity to attend and experience college. Attending college is a priveledge and an amazing thing to do. I believe everyone should attend college to further their education and gain more knowledge. It has been very valuable to attend college because getting an excellent education is very imperative to my family and I. Although I am only a Junior and my college experience is not over yet, I have recieved alot out of my college expereince. I have learned how to live and mangae on my own, Improve my public speaking skills, and social skills. when It was time for me to apply to colleges, most of my choices were instate. I realized by me staying at home and going to school I was going to remain sheltered and not spread my wings. When I say spread my wings i mean meeting new people, experiencing living on my own, and seeing what the world has to offer. Since I have been in college I have really matured into the intellectual young woman I am today. I would not trade my college experience for anything in the world and I truly valuable my education.

Some of the experience that i have gotten from this school is to be proud of my race and who I am. There have been great people to come from the African American community and I am one of those people. When i look around there are faces that look like mine and it is different than the high schools I attended in my earlier years. It shows me that there are other African Americans that also believe in bettering themselves and that a higher education is that way to go about it. I have learned that I do not have to fulfill a horrible stereotype or statstic, but be part of a rarer group.

Latasha

If I were go back into tim time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself to know or have a good idea about where I see myself in the next five years, collect all the information about the college your interested before you attend, seek alternatives, and always have a back-up plan.

Natasha

The advice I would give myself would to prepare all the financial aid and living arrangements well ahead of time before school starts. There is nothing worse than to have to do last minute running around making sure that everything is taken care of. Also, enrolling to take summer classes after graduation from high school can he very helpful. Not only will it put me ahead of the other first time students academically , but also socially. The transition from high school to college is tough. Going to school in the summer gives you a aheads up of what to expect once the fall semester rolls around. Another thing would be to believe it when someone tells you that the friends you come into college with will not necessarily continue to be your friends during college. You may grow apart and meet new people.

Shanneka

If i could go back in time to when i was a high school senior, i would tell myself to actually take the time to research and visit the schools that i applied to. Also, to take the time out to apply for scholorships. Coming to my current university, i was surprised at many things i discovered. If i taken a little more time into my college application process, i would have known exactly what i was getting myself into.

Tyreese

If i could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell my self to get it together because you are about to take a big step in life and theirs no times for games. you will have to be on your A game this is not high school no more u are on your own, no more mommy and daddy. This transition you are about to make will determine the rest of your life so don't take nothing for granted. And when you get there you will have to ba a hard worker and dont slack. Be up on time for classes, have time management , don't get caught up in the parties, and continue to follow the road to success cause you can do anything you put your mind to!.

Nicole

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior I would tell myself, if I haven't already, to begin to develop a mindset of focusing on the reasons why I am choosing to attend college. I would tell myself to be comfortable with the schools that I have applied to, make sure those schools are MY CHOICES and not for anyone else. FInally, do not get caught up in bad habits of peers that will ultimately affect your performance., partying, drinking, poor study habits, etc. Once you begin to fall into that pattern it is often extremely difficult to correct it, leaving a student feeling discouraged and then either dropping out or failing out of school. Stay focused and encouraged because there will be tough times ahead of you but if you just stay the course I promise you, you will NEVER regret it. Surround yourself with positive peers, carefully select extracurricular activities but most of all..know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel....PUSH ON!!!!!! U CAN DO IT!

DARRELL

If i could go back and talk to myself as a senior. I will have to say that I am doing it. I am so proud of myself. I used to listen to my mother speak as a single parent, how bad she wanted to send all of her 3 sons to college. I used to wonder, how will she do it on just her income alone. I must say that GOD has a way. I didn't think it would be possible when i was in High School, but now i see that dreams can come true. I have paved the way for my younger brothers and I just want to say I am proud of myself. I look back at that young man that was sitting in High School, taking exams and wondering where will he be next year. Now I see myself and i am thankful. Thank You.

The advice that I would give parents and/or students about finding the right college and making the most of the college experience is that when you get accpected to a school make sure the finiancal situation is cleared and good because some universities mess up and might say that you owe alot of money and you really don't. Also, when you start school its nice to meet new people but, you have to remember that your there for on reason and one reason only and that is to get an education. And manage your scheulde. Meaning, if your in any activites and any clubs you have to put some time aside to study and get a tutor because it wouldn't hurt to get A's your freshmen year. Good Luck!

Michole

Just to choose the college that YOU want to attend..... Not the one everybody else THINK you should attend....... Stay focused and graduate on time..........

Shannon

Always stay on top school work. Never think you do not have to study for test or review your work after class. It's always good to stay on track with school.

Manoucheca

i would say find a college that has a lot of scholarship oppurtunities, academicaly strong, and a carrear service center. a college that is very diverse and also a good fitness center.

In order for the parents of the new college student to feel the most comfort out of the college that their child has selected, would be to visit the college with your child and to take in what the college has to offer. It helps the parent when they are able to be hands on and see that this college is an excellent choice for their child. For students, in order to find the right college do your research, that is extremely important. Make sure that you are happy with everything on campus, and do not be afarid to ask questions. College is a different experience then high school, it teaches you responsiblity by being in an mature independent enviornment. Make sure that when you pick the college of your choice you enroll in activities so that you take pride in the college you plan on attending. Being involved gives you school spirit and helps you to grow to love the university that you plan on going to.

Armstrong

Early preparation is the best way to start.

Je'Nai

Visit the Colleges you are interested in and talk to the students there. Be sure to try different activities and get invovled. Talk to the professors and staff members, they will help you out when you need it. Don't forget the values your parents taught you . Take classes outside of your major, and try new things. Talk to career services and get an internship. Have fun.

Adeyemi

If you have a dream never give up, because education is not expensive at all.

Deirdre

Make sure you the college has the academic programs that you are looking for. Make sure that they have scholarship opportunities available. Visit the college before you decide to enroll. Once enrolled, utilize every resource that is available to you.

Ayonna

Before selecting a college to attend I advise parents and prospective students to research the school to gain knowlege of that University. Do not limit yourself when choosing a college. Have at least a few colleges to choose from. Take college campus tours to get a better idea of what your academic and social experience will be like so you can make the most out of your college experience. Ask students that may already attend a school that you are interested in about that college. Get different opinions about your financial package from various colleges so you will know who sponsers the the best award to fit your budget and financial needs. Lastly, choose wisely to make the most for your future endeavors.

Chelsey

I would say before you make a decision of whatever school you pick that fits you best do as much research as much as you can look for campus life, financial , majors, etc anything you can of picking the right school for you. Also as far college experience I can say do your best at school make good decison, hang out with the right people, always do work and concentrate, and never anyone come between your study and work habits and always manage your time.

Clarence

When looking for the right college, visit the college campus, tour the dorms and buildings, talk to current students, talk to current staff. If possible, find alumni and talk to them about the school as well. Consider the tuition, but also remember that even though college may be expenisve think of it as an investment into yourself. When you find the right college for you, remember to stay focused and determined. College is one part of your life that can make or break you. You may come into college not nowing exactly where you want to go or do in life, but make it a point to find out what it is that you would love to do, not just the first thing you find that your good at.

Sean

The advice that I would give to another student & or parent about finding the right college is think about everything that the university has to offer such as housing, scholarships, class size, location and the ability to get to places that you need (grocery stores, & hospitals), campus activities, diversity & opportunities for jobs & internships as well as other opportunities that one could rely on to put them where they need to be. Additionally I would tell someone to look at what kind of teachers are teaching at that college because you do not want to be taught by a teacher who barely knows what they are talking about. If a student were to ask me advice on making the most of their college experience I would tell them that the key is communication. Also, the more opportunities that you take advantage of on campus the more well rounded you will become.

Avery

The best thing that i would tell people is to make sure that the school feels right to them. That has alot to do with how a studend does in school. I would also make sure that the school has majors that the student wants. Also the school needs to have a strong job placement program as well as intership fo students through major companies. Campus should not be boring on weekends there should always be something for students to do.

Ziani

Become a part of your campus community. Meet as many people as you can from as many different backgrounds as you can. Get to know a few professors and take classes outside your major. Attend seminars and don't make your life revolve around your school; Join some clubs. Go to class, every class, every single time. Sit near the front, its easier to pay attention. Study hard and belive that you can and will be sucessful. Congratulations

As a student who is dealing with the right funding for school, I express the importane of earning good grades in high school and being very active in high school. Most scholarships come from being an athleic or having very good grades. My grades were not the best in high school and I wish they were, becaus eI would not have the problems Im having now. I would let parents know that it is important to support their child in every desicion made in life espically when it comes to college. A child's dream can be destroyed faster by a parent then by a friend or someone else. Prayer and Faith is the number thing to help people with anything. Right now I have to find 10,000 to retuen to Cheyney, with my mom by my side and all thne faith and prayer I saw this opprutunity to win a scholarship. It is also important that just becaus you may not be able to attend the school of your choice, does not mean that your college plans are over. Be strong and never give up.

Danielle

I would tell them to talk to other students on campus if they could just not the ones the college appoint to talk to you. Also you are paying for your education or using loans that you have to pay back so you should utilize all the resources available, participate in activities, get invlolved. Volunteer. because out there in the work world they are looking for ambitious people, people that are serious and are able to work and love to help. and are not lazy. Always ask questions and aim to be a master student because in the end the reward is Good!
