I love the people that I’ve met at CNU, but overall kind of wish I had chosen somewhere else. Most of my professors (especially in my department) have been amazing, but the upper administration is very lackluster, especially during the pandemic. You are required to live on-campus for your first 3 years where you get absolutely no privacy as RA’s are basically allowed to search your room whenever they see fit, even when you are 21 and there is no reason for them to do so. The dean of students has sent out multiple passive-aggressive emails to students blaming them for the spread of the virus, but continued to have in-person classes of 50+ people “socially distanced”. I would also consider this school very conservative politically as far as colleges go, so keep that in mind.
Overall, I have had some of my best experiences here at CNU. Interpersonally, I've made some of my long-lasting friendships here and feel greatly supported by faculty. Because the university size is so small, the close connections you make are so much more meaningful and helpful in the long run when you leave CNU. Networking will definitely come in handy. There is unfortunately not much diversity in terms of race, particularly when it comes to academic courses, the overall campus atmosphere, and visible campus organizations. As CNU grows hopefully this is something that is improved.
CNU is a great school that has a faculty and staff that cares for its students! The atmosphere is friendly and open - there is truly something for everyone!
CNU is a warm and welcoming school. The beautiful campus and friendly atmosphere makes getting up for those 8am classes not so difficult. If you want professors who care about you, very friendly staff, and a more than approachable President (not to mention his loving wife, Rosemary Trible), this is the place for you!
CNU's academics are very top notch. However, being a smaller D3 school, football games are not our thing. However, the tailgates before are! And intramural sports are huge! Greek life is very popular and probably half the student body are involved in it. The classes are hard, and the housing lottery and registering for classes will be your biggest nightmares! However, after those are over, you will have so much fun. Everyone is really good about balancing partying and school, we only party on the weekends and you don't have to party - or drinking - to have fun!
Christopher Newport University is like its own little world. We truly are one big family and the campus does feel amazingly safe. The lights academic buildings stay on during the night and there are other lights so you're never walking in the dark. While CNU can become boring when you are looking to have a little fun there are always chances to get involved with all of the clubs. You just have to go to meetings and speak up so people notice you. At first glance it doesn't seem very diverse on campus, but I promise once you actually become a student and you start meeting people, your definition of diversity will stretch and you'll see just how diverse and pretty cool CNU is!
My professors were amazing. The actual location of the campus is really boring and there's little diversity in the student population.
Christopher Newport University is the perfect place for someone who is looking for a smaller, homey college. CNU is known for many odd things, including the plethora of columns around campus and the perfect manicured and always green Great Lawn, but is also well known for their amazing staff, small class sizes, and the wonderful sense of comradery between students. Whether you are a freshman or alumni, you are a captain and thus part of the family. CNU is a school that focuses on the individual student as well as the university as a whole. it is very hard to become just another name on a roster, even in the biggest of classes. Professors work hard to get to know each student and are always available for extra help or even just as a friend. Additionally, each student is given a Core Advisor during their first year, whom will help them until they receive their major specific advisor junior year. Core Advisors help to significantly simply the processes of choosing classes and are also there to help advise in all other academic aspects. Study abroad and community engagement are strongly encouraged, and the offices dedicated to each are very helpful.
Outside of classes, there are hundreds of clubs, inter-mural sports, and all sorts of other activities. You will never be bored on campus. CNU is by far one of the best universities in Virginia and is an absolutely amazing place to call home.
Christopher Newport University will give back to you what you put into it. There's always something going on for everyone and President Trible surely know how to celebrate anything, there's fireworks and all kinds of cool things on the Great Lawn. The classes are smaller after you get through the 100 level introduction ones and getting in touch with professors is so simple, everyone truly wants to learn!
Do not come here hoping for help from financial aid or expect housing. The offices aren’t of much help, but the only thing redeemable are some of the classes for majors. As a computer science major, some classes are hit or miss but others are infuriating due to unreasonably restricted class sizes. The school is great, but don’t expect help when needed.
This university has a variety of ways for students to get involved. Whether you're into varsity sports, intramurals, artistic clubs, student government, etc., there are tons of opportunities to find students just like you. All staff is incredibly encouraging and professors are available to help!
This school is a wonderful place to go. The classes are very engaging and interesting, and are taught by professors that are passionate about the subjects. There is always things to go to on campus. It is very easy to get involved in sports, clubs, or volunteering
Overall a decent school, definitely has a metropolitan vibe to it. If you aren't into the metropolitan thing, though, you might get annoyed quickly here. Introverts have a more difficult time here because most people are very outgoing/very social constantly. Professors usually are very helpful, I have had more great ones than poor ones. The facilities here are outstanding, and generally people are friendly.
Christopher Newport University is the perfect university. The atmosphere is unlike anywhere else. Though you may not know everyone there, everyone makes it seem as if we are all one big Captain family. The people there and genuinely nice people and very hardworking in all they do. The housing is better than any other school. We have apartments and suites. The food is delicious and taste just like a home cooked meal, except better, because it is buffet style. The classes and professors are amazing. They work directly with you and the small sizes make it very easy to form relationships with the professors who actually care about us students.
Overall, CNU is an incredible university. From the staff, to faculty, to the administration, they all have the best interest of their students at heart and want their students to succeed not only as an undergraduate; but as a graduate in the real world. The amount of effort that the university puts forth for its students is astounding. Nearly all professors perform research outside the classroom so they may better understand what they teach, all the while making themselves available at nearly any time with office hours or personal meetings. The sense of community that has been established here is palpable even to those that are simply visiting, which speaks volumes.
I've only been attending Christopher Newport for a year, so I don't have all of the information yet to make a very informed judgement, but so far, I really love the school. The atmosphere, the people, the academics, etc. makes you feel welcome and at home.
Love every minute I'm on campus. Small campus means it's convenient to get everywhere, no need to catch a bus or shuttle like on larger campuses. There's always stuff to do on the weekends both on campus and off. Anyone can bring a car, so there are always ways to get off campus and head to the beach (only 20 minutes away) or Busch Gardens on the weekends.
Christopher Newport University is such a great place to get a quality education, the staff cares about every student experience and puts our future above all else. An extreme amount of thought is put into everything, including roommate assignments. The overall atmosphere is friendly and inviting.
As a sophomore, I have had an overall very pleasant experience at CNU. I have found that the atmosphere they raved about on tours was accurate. People here are driven and caring, always ready to be involved. While not all professors or classes are stellar, I have found great fulfillment and support in my academic career. There is plenty to become involved in, and students may find that it is the norm to be almost over-involved on campus. CNU is a great place for students looking for a genuine college experience, academically motivated, and willing to serve the community.
It is an amazing campus to be on. Everyone is friendly, its a welcoming environment, and the campus is beautiful. The classes are small so the professors are able to communicate effectively with students and it is like a private school, but at a public price. The surrounding areas are full of things to do, if you have access to a car, but the area isn't the best so you have to be aware of surroundings.
Christopher Newport University is an excellent school. I love that the campus is small because I am able to connect with all of my professors in a great way. Everyone is so sweet and caring. We have many clubs and love coming together as a community. Finally, the campus is absolutely beautiful. Everything is new and a lot of money was invested in CNU to make sure it is a beautiful. Overall, CNU is the school for me and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else :).
The first thing you notice when you enter CNU is how beautiful the campus is. One of the reasons I applied to CNU is because of how recent and upcoming the university is. Everything, and I mean everything, there looks so gorgeous. The campus takes pride on how the university looks and manages it well. Besides the atmosphere, CNU is also know for their AMAZING marching band. There band always plays with such energy and excitement that you can't help but smile when they take the field. Overall, CNU is a great campus to go to if you have a small university, with a wonderful atmosphere, and an awesome band.
CNU has an incredibly welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds. This is a small, safe, and spirited campus. The staff is very friendly, the students love to be here, and the dining halls are marvelous! We are very serious about involvement as well as being well-rounded in academic learning. There is plenty of study space, and sitting outside on a nice day would suit you just as well. It is an excellent place to learn and grow, and I am proud to be a Captain.
Christopher Newport University is not only my school, it is also my home. I greatly enjoy the campus, the students, the staff, and the overall atmosphere. The students and staff center around kindness to all students. There are a lot of involvements for students throughout the year as well.
Overall Christopher Newport is a wonderful school academically; however, the school is not very racially diverse and could be more culturally sensitive. One of my favorite aspects of this school is its class sizes. There are some lecture hall classes that have nearly 100 students, but the rest of the classes usually have less than 30.
Christopher Newport University is a great school to attend. There are many activities to participate outside of the classroom and academics are great as well. The dorms are fantastic and are a great place to live. My favorite part about the university is the welcoming atmosphere and the other people who attend.
This is a fantastic school. Like everything there are small issues but they are constantly trying to fix them. Paul Trible is an amazing President. He will listen to all of the students complaints and will try to accommodate as best as possible for the student.
It is a very well rounded school.
It is a great school and many people would love it if they gave it a chance. People don't give it a chance because it's a small school and fairly new to the area and people think that employers won't even bat an eye at you if you put in on your resume.
Overall the professors are great and truly care about their students. Most upper level class size is small with an exception to many biology courses. One change I would prefer to see are more places to study. Currently the library is under construction, so hopefully more spaces will come of that.
Christopher Newport University is a great educational facility. It is a smaller school which I prefer. The classroom sizes are small and the professors know you by name. There are an abundance of opportunities for extra curricular activities and internships. I believe if you are looking for a great experience you will find it at Christopher Newport University.
This school has a very warm and caring environment. Everyone there, from faculty and staff to the students, is very nice and encouraging. The professors are very understanding and helpful. They always respond to your emails. Some may even respond to your 1am email right away! The students are caring. One can always know that if you forget a scantron, there'll be at least one student willing to give you their spare!
It's a fantastic campus filled with wonderful people and professors. There are a lot of science classes (I'm a science major, so those are mainly the ones I look for) at a variety of times which makes it a bit easier when registering for classes. If you're having trouble, it's easy to go see your professor during office hours for additional help and/or advice. I highly recommend this university to graduating high school seniors.
When we first met I was instantly infatuated
Little did I know what miseries awaited
Like a fly to a flower - this was no mishap
Except I discovered a Venus fly trap
Your sweet, lovely aroma had lured me in
But later that changed to the smell of kingpins
Strawberry vapes and exploding meth labs
Cockroaches, scabies, and rumors of crabs
A PWI, this school needs more culture
Apartment residents attacked by vultures
The accomplishments of men like MLKJ
Unrecognized they are- go to school that day!
Though in Virginia where hurricanes hit
If school is missed, weekend classes you sit
While classes are small, and the food looks appealing
Instructors are rude and you're sick after eating
A professor admires Justice Brett Kavanaugh
"If what I did got out, I'd be fired- HAHA!"
They claim they will help you with all of your problems
But your quickly abandoned, your heart left to harden
If you can help it, go somewhere else
If you decide to come here, your spirit will melt
Christopher Newport University is a great Virginia university that is growing each and every year. Students are encouraged to get involved in any way they can and Faculty are consistent with their office hours. The campus is small but everyone is very nice, welcoming and extremely helpful in any situation.
Very progressive liberal arts school. Campus is contuing to grow and provides plenty of space to be out and about. The school's size is small enough where you don't feel overwhelmed and can engage with your professors yet big enough for you to feel like you have your own space. Beautiful campus, fun loving people, the president has an open door policy for all students. I loved my time at CNU.
I enjoy the campus size as well as the class sizes. There is definitely a serene and orderly atmosphere on campus during the week, but on weekends there is a lot of activity which creates a perfect balance of the work hard, play hard attitude most college students have. Most classes are open to discussion and students and professors are respectful of one another's opinions. I have yet to have a professor who I felt that I could not approach with a problem and I am happy with the availability of resources for academics and guidance that are offered on campus.
Christopher Newport is a beautiful school. All academic facilities are impeccable; there is never any trash or dust. The lighting is adequate and there is electronic projectors, white boards and/or promethium boards in all rooms which aids in catering to all type's of learning styles. Many of the professors have the highest degree in their field and demonstrate their passion for their subject through their teaching and eagerness to students who seek additional assistance with understanding concepts. The dining halls have at least one dish available that everyone will like. There are various options being served simultaneously and the second dining hall serves entrees entirely different from the other, on the same day, which students seem to appreciate the choice. There are not as many vegan or vegetarian options as some would probably like. Most dining staff are very friendly; which is a pleasant start to the morning. The overall atmosphere is welcoming and I always feel safe on campus, even walking out of the library at 2 AM back to my dorm, nearby. When coming to Christopher Newport University, it is to be expected that you will be known by name by your professors and have many opportunities to become involved in extracurricular activities.
Christopher Newport University is a university that I truly believe is one of a kind. One of the biggest things that drew me to CNU was the friendliness of the people on campus. Everyone wants to see you succeed, and they will walk beside you as you go through your four years as a student on campus. I have loved my experience at CNU, and I know without a doubt that I made the right choice in choosing to attend this school.
The campus is very beautiful and the class sizes are small, so that everyone has the same amount of time with the teacher. There are many things to do around the campus, that everyone has to choose what they want to do so that they aren't straining themselves in doing multiple activities. Overall, CNU is an amazing school.
I am very happy with my decision to attend Christopher Newport University; I was drawn to the low number of students, small class sizes, small, compact campus (it's not spread all over the town such as Longwood, Old Dominion Univeristy, or Virginia Commonwealth University) and overall accepting/friendly southern hospitality of the place. We could definitely stand more diversity as we are a PWU, however we are kind and accepting to all races, ethnicities, religious beliefs, sexual orientations, etc. The staff around campus are absolutely sweet people to talk to and get to know. This is a great university!
Christopher Newport University is an amazing school with professors who care about their students and are willing to help them whenever they have questions. Students are friendly and always hold the door open for others when entering into buildings no matter how far away that student is.
Christopher Newport University is a close-knit community filled with people who truly care about each other. This is not only representative of the student population but the the staff and faculty as well. Opportunities arise everyday at Christopher Newport University, giving everyone a chance to be involved and invest in their future.
It's the most amazing college ever!
The academics at CNU are unbeatable, the professors are dedicated and passionate. The environment here is really helpful to maintain your grades and keep up in your studies. The staff are friendly and accommodating, and the services are nice. There are plenty of on-campus jobs.
My overall opinion about Christopher Newport University is it's a beautiful school! As you walk on the campus of Christopher Newport University you observe that it's a lot of diverse people attending the school. The buildings are charming and very clean. Also ,they have very competitive sports teams.
The atmosphere at Christopher Newport is amazing. As soon as I stepped on campus I knew this was place I would be able to be my nerdy, shy self and people wouldn't make fun of me for it. I feel very safe and welcomed at this school. Everyone is willing and will talk to anyone else they pass or meet. The doors are held open. There is a lot of activity and a lot of things that you can or might want to get involved with.
Christopher Newport University is an engaging campus that encourages students of all races, genders, ethnicities, and backgrounds to be involved in the on- and off-campus scene. The school provides a safe learning and living environment that takes into account all of its students. The students are well taken care of and there is always help available no matter when or where.
At first I was not sure I would like it, but out of all the schools I toured this one the only one that made me feel at home. This is my first year at CNU and I could not be happier. There is always something going on and they really try to make everyone fit in. I am very excited to finish out my degree at Christopher Newport. There is something for everyone between clubs and Greek life. The staff at Christopher Newport wants everyone to succeed so they are extremely helpful with anything you need.
It is a close knit school that makes you feel at home.
