I love the people that I’ve met at CNU, but overall kind of wish I had chosen somewhere else. Most of my professors (especially in my department) have been amazing, but the upper administration is very lackluster, especially during the pandemic. You are required to live on-campus for your first 3 years where you get absolutely no privacy as RA’s are basically allowed to search your room whenever they see fit, even when you are 21 and there is no reason for them to do so. The dean of students has sent out multiple passive-aggressive emails to students blaming them for the spread of the virus, but continued to have in-person classes of 50+ people “socially distanced”. I would also consider this school very conservative politically as far as colleges go, so keep that in mind.

Overall, I have had some of my best experiences here at CNU. Interpersonally, I've made some of my long-lasting friendships here and feel greatly supported by faculty. Because the university size is so small, the close connections you make are so much more meaningful and helpful in the long run when you leave CNU. Networking will definitely come in handy. There is unfortunately not much diversity in terms of race, particularly when it comes to academic courses, the overall campus atmosphere, and visible campus organizations. As CNU grows hopefully this is something that is improved.

Clare

CNU is a great school that has a faculty and staff that cares for its students! The atmosphere is friendly and open - there is truly something for everyone!

Alexa

CNU is a warm and welcoming school. The beautiful campus and friendly atmosphere makes getting up for those 8am classes not so difficult. If you want professors who care about you, very friendly staff, and a more than approachable President (not to mention his loving wife, Rosemary Trible), this is the place for you!

Small class sizes are Christopher Newport University are both a curse and a blessing. While allowing better interaction with the professor and improved class discussions, it makes getting into specialized classes very competitive. Enrollment in classes is decided by your year and whether or not you are in the President's Leadership Program. It can be frustrating to see PLP students of a lower grade level enrolling in classes you need before you have the option.

The most frustrating thing about my school is actually a toss up between the crowding in the dining hall and the small number of clubs (compared to a larger school). However, for a small school, they seem to do the best they can.

Greek Life is huge on campus. Although the statistics show that a minority of the campus is involved in Greek Life, if you consider alternative Greek organizations and the number of students around campus that you see wearing letters it would seem that statistics grossly underestimate that percentage. Religious campus organizations are also very popular such as InterVarsity and CRU.
