The Colby classroom education is one of the best in the country. It is a predominatly jock and white school. Most kids are from 20 mins outside of Boston. The majority of kids who attend colby are rich and spoilt.

Colby students have raided the Freeport outlets, managing to gracefully mix Mexicali Blues with J.Crew finds. The typical student is preppy, with flamming liberal tendencies, and enjoys spending time outdoors.

Everyone thinks that students at Colby drink a lot because there is nothing better to do on the weekends in Waterville, Maine.

Justin

Of the many characterizations of Colby, I think that one college guide summarized our image the best as "A JCrew catalog with a hangover." Aside from that I think that Colby brings with it the usual small liberal arts college stigma: a small, academically strong school largely inhabited with white kids who all live ten minutes outside of Boston.

Peter

Colby Stereotypes: Preppy Rich WASP bad Waterville relations

Devin

Rich. Privileged. Outdoorsy

Andy

Work hard, play hard[er]! Most people are from either twenty minutes outside of Boston or halfway around the world; Colby has drinking teams with sports problems; you're either preppy or crunchy; you carry a Nalgene and wear a North Face fleece and/or jacket...

Kelsey

i think that really depends on who you're asking. my friends from home seem to think that we're all mainers, that we have a lousy sense of style (which i have to admit that is relatively true), that we're all outrageously environmentally aware. i think that if you were to ask waterville residents that live near colby students, they'd call us loud or perhaps a bit rude while intoxicated. if you were to ask waterville residents that don't live near colby students, i think they'd call them kind hearted and relatively informed.

Piper

That it is extremely homogeneous (ie white, upper-middle class new englanders).

Loretta

that we're all rich, snobby, and spoiled we think we're better than everyone around us (i.e. waterville residents)

Michelle

Some stereotypes about Colby are that we are preppy, white, rich kids.

Various stereotypes include the notion that all Colby students drink heavily, are affluent Caucasian students living 10/20 minutes outside of Boston, all go skiing on the weekends, their parents pay for everything (including parking tickets) and believe that racism and discrimination is not prevalent on campus.

April

That we are all rich, preppy WASPS from New England.

Caroline

preppy, outdoorsy

Evan

Drunk

Emily

I think a big stereotype about Colby is that people work hard and play hard, and I think this stereotype is very accurate. Students at Colby are highly motivated and enthusiastic about whatever they're involved with on campus- and are equally excited to participate in academic, extracurricular/social, and traditional events.

Dale

That we drink a lot and don't study. Also that all the students are hippies.

Christine

That we're either super-liberal, outdoorsy, vegan-types or the New England prep school, country club crowd.

Anuj

Colby students are usually said to be upper class, white, private school, cliquey students. The students here are often contrasted to the college town of Waterville, a poor historic Maine town, with a lot of character, but very little economic progression. The students have two other contrasting stereotypes as well: the students are said to be heavy drinkers, with a large population of the student body consuming alcohol every weekend; at the same time there is a stereotype that Colby students are always busy, have to get kicked out of the library after 1 or 2am, and run on coffee and redbull.

Jake

Either very preppy or very hippie, drink a lot, cliquey
