College of Saint Benedict Top Questions

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Emily

The best thing about St. Ben's/St. John's is the community. You truly feel at home, as cheesy as that sounds. I think my school is the best of both worlds. It is definitely a smaller school, but with the partnership between St. Ben's and St. Johns, it seems bigger because of the two campuses, but still has a small school feel. We have tons of school pride. Johnnie football games are awesome. The tradition is really strong and it is cool to see all of the alumni come back to cheer on the team.

Emily

I absolutely love everything about CSB. The professors are fantastic, the food is great and the people are wonderful. If anything, the link busses between campuses can be tedious at times.

Lauren

College of St. Benedict and its partner school St. John's University are truly amazing places. The coordinate partnership is very unique, where women live on the College of St. Benedict campus while men live on the St. John's University campus, but take classes together on both campuses. One of the best things about this school is the community. Both the students and faculty want to help each other achieve and there are many opportunities to do so. Furthermore, the Benedictine tradition stresses the importance of community. The College of St. Benedict is located in a small rural town, but the conveniences of the city are close by. It's a perfect combination. Additionally, the academic life is fantastic. The classes are challenging, but the professors are very helpful.

CSB/SJU is great becasue the people are so friendly, and there is always something going on. If you want to be busy and involved you have every opportunity to do so. If I could change anything ti would be having tunnels so during the winter it isn't so cold. I think this school is the perfect size, it's not so big that you will never see the people you sit next to in class. But it's not so small that everyone knows everybody. it's that perfect size where you are small enough that a lot of people you meet will know someone that you know, so you have someting in common with pretty much everyone. When I tell people that I go to CSB/SJU they are generally impressed, I get a lot of wow, that's a great school's from people. And it makes me feel good that they are so impresed with where I go to school. I spend most of my time on campus either at the gym/weight room, or in one of my friend's rooms. The city of St. Joseph is very accomodating to college students, and around the college it seems like the entire town is composed of students sometimes, but the community is very supportive of our school, and especially our sports. You see a lot of local students at our games. I think the administration at our school does a great job of getting us national recognition by bringing in some of the best teachers and doing things like getting rid of bottled water on campus, which brought us into national headlines. There is so much school pride here. A big reason is that we have so many athletes here, and chances are you are going to know a couple of them, so games are really big here.. I'm a big sports fan if you can't tell. :) But there is school pride in other ways too, even if you don't play sports or aren't into that sort of thing there is such a sense of community here that you want people to know where you go to school. I would say the most unusual thing about this school is that we have an enormous amount of land, the arboretum is huge, and we have several lakes just on campus. If we had a DMV we could be our own country! One thing I will always remember about this school is all of the random things I do with my friend when we are hanging out late at night like building a snow family at 2 am in front of the freshmen dorms, or setting up a kitchen table by the bus stop, midnight swimming at lake sag. The most frequent student complaints are about missing the bus, getting up for an 8am on the opposite campus, Gorecki (the dining hall) not having apple crisp, and feeling like theres not enough time in the day to get everything done.

Kori

I love St. Ben's! Being on an all girls campus is fantastic in the mornings when you want to go to breakfast without doing your homework, but you only have to take a short bus ride over to St. John's to find a campus full of boys. The dorms and food are amazing. Everyone you meet here is extremely nice!

Amanda

It's a great school! It's just the right size. With 1,000 students a class you don't know everyone, but can always find a friendly face.

Caroline

The College of St. Benedict is unque to any other school because we are an all women school, but have a brother school just down the road. We are able to use resources and attend classes on both campuses. CSB is in the small town of St Joe and is a bit more modern, where SJU is in the country and has a sense of tradition. The size of our schools combined is perfect. You are able to know professors and other studends personally, but are still able to meet new people. The professors here care about your success. They are very helpful and are always pushes you to do better. The school pride is like no other, not only among the current students but also among the alumni. Any time I tell a past Johnnie or Bennie that I am a current student, we have an instant connection. The only complaint here is that the time spent at CSB/SJU goes too fast.

This school is amazing. Everyone is so welcoming and we are like one big family.

Anders

St. John's is a place unlike any other. Many colleges boast the stereotypical beautiful campuses with large trees, green lawns, and ivy covered brick buildings. If that is what you are looking for St. John's can offer you that, it has the most beautiful campus in the state of Minnesota, hands down. But there is something intangible about St. John's and its students. The environment is warm and the community is close. Students don't think of each other as accquaintences or friends, but rather brothers. St. John's builds character unlike any other school, it creates a genuine well rounded man.

Emily

The best thing about CSB is the incredible sense of community. You can walk up to anyone and start a friendly conversation. CSB has great class sizes. I have never been in a class with more than 30 kids and that class was a biology course. When I tell people that I go to St. Ben's. I usually have to follow it up with saying that I go to St. John's because everyone knows SJU and apparently, nearly no one has ever heard of CSB. I spend most of my time in my room and hanging out at SJU with my boyfriend and his friends at SJU. I have heard some very upsetting rumors about changes that our president is trying to make, such as separating the campuses completely. I don't like the rumors I have heard floating around and I would be very disappointed if I found out that they were true. There is definitely a huge amount of school pride. No one is embarrassed to say that they are a Bennie. One thing that I would change is that you must have the unlimited meal plan if you live on campus because I certainly do not need to pay $2300 for a meal plan that I hardly use. What a waste of money!

Bridget

I absolutely love it here. The people here are fun and nice, and it's a really accepting environment in general. The campuses and surrounding areas are beautiful, and because the campus is in such a small town, the campuses are vibrant. The small town setting is a drawback though, it's hard to go anywhere off campus without a car, and there aren't a lot of fun things to do right outside in st.joe. The school does get small too-you see everyone everywhere. This isn't always bad though- I can walk into the cafeteria and find someone to eat with almost immediately.

Kellie

Saint Bens and Saint Johns offer a wonderful learning environment that also allows for students to grow outside the classroom. Seeings that CSBSJU is a small school, you will know the other students around campus, the teachers that see you in class, and the whole campus. There is pride in knowing that you are a Bennie or Johnnie. There is an unusal sense of community and a sense of accomplishment. Saint Bens and Saint Johns is a fantastic school.

Nicole

I love being a Bennie and going to the College of Saint Benedict. We are an all women's college that houses only women dorms but we are uniquely partnered with a boys school, St. John's University, which allows for all co-ed facilities and classes. The best think here is the opportunities it provides for its students. We have academic opportunities, athletic opportunities, leadership opportunities, and spiritual opportunities. People really get the sense that we are a community here. Most people spend time on campus during the weekends and there is always a variety of events to attend. Though we have our fair share of fun, we also take academics serious and anywhere you look on campus, you can find a student studying. Our academics are serious, but worth it in the real world.

Melissa

I love csbsju its not to big its not to small, it is such a fun college town, our teachers are so helpful, there is so much school pride and tradition here

Samantha

I love this school. I cannot imagine going to a different one. The best thing about this school is that everyone is for the most part very accepting of others. There isn't a lot of judgment. My school is small, but that is why I like it. Some people may think it is too small for them...it is a personal choice. I enjoy seeing familiar faces around campus (St. Ben's and St. John's). I also love the small calss sizes because it allows me to get to know my professors on a name to name basis. The unusual thing about my school is that I also go to St. John's University. We have two campuses. Women live at St. Ben's and men live at St. John's, but during the day, we all have classes on both campuses and we share all of the facilities (cafeterias, work out centers, gyms, buildings, libraries, ect.).

Garrett

Saint John's University is an amazing school. I find that the best thing about Saint John's is that we are a tight knit community and that we are willing to help everyone out. I also find that the professors are amazing at helping you out and being there for you when you need help, all the professors want to to strive. Saint John's is a smaller school, but it fits me just right, Football games here at Saint John's are probably the most fun activity there is here. On Saturday afternoons, everyone is at the football game to support the Johnnies. I wouldn't change a single thing.

Tish

The best thing about CSB is the feeling of community and being welcomed. I know it sounds cliche, but its true. When on my visit to CSB I immediately felt welcomed into the community and like I was apart of the school before I had even applied. CSB literally feels like a family; it's like a second home here. Another thing I really like about CSB is the size of the school. Its small, but its not too small. Its small enough where the average class size is 20-22 and the cap size is 35, but big enough where you can definitely meet someone new everyday. Students are known by name and are able to get the individual attention they need.

Ashley

My overall opinion about this school is that I LOVE IT! The people here are outstanding and wonderful, the atmosphere is what drew me in. You can look all around campus and there are countless groups of people walking around or conversations going on. Being that CSB/SJU have such small campus's and classroom sizes it really helps to meet alot of people that you have something in common with easier. Getting to know your teachers is something that you won't have to question if it will happen, because you will. The school pride at this school is incredible, especially when it comes to Johnnie football! The games are such an excitement to go to, and alot of the student body participates. An experience that I will remember was my first Tommie/Johnnie football game was at SJU and the stands were packed with a record number of people there ever. It was insane and I will never forget it. One most frequent student complaint I would have to say is the requirement for CSB students to live on campus for all four years. Which really does suck, I have to be honest. I don't agree with it at all, especially when there is a perfectly good town to find a house to live in. But overall CSB/SJU is a fantastic school, so happy with my choice to come here!

I LOVE the College of Saint Benedict. Everyone is outgoing and friendly. We are such a unique community in that we all really bond together and support each other. So when something goes wrong, we are able to hold each other up. For example, a student's parents died and there was a prayer service held and an email sent out to the student body to make them aware of this. The size of the school is great because you know a lot of people, but it's not like high school where you know everyone, so there is still that chance to meet new people every day. I think the other great thing about our school is that we aren't a "suitcase campus," meaning everyone stays on campus during the weekends. This is great for me because I live 6 hours away and can't go home every weekend. And because of all of the groups on campus, there are always concerts to go to and other events on campus to go to so you are never bored.

Colleen

I could not have been happier at any other college or university. This school has opened TONS of doors for me for future job opportunities. I have made life long freindships with genuinely nice and motivated people. St. Bens and St. John's challenges students academically, and opens doors for students to get involved social justice.

Autumn

I am in love with this school. The best thing is the sense of community throughout the student body we have here and the high drive and expectations from teachers. If I could change one thing, I would make sure the school paid more attention to promoting the school itself and their academics, because they really have a very good academic record, but while applying I hardly heard anything about it. My school is just right for me. It's small and intimate, but it's set only a few miles away from Saint Cloud (a large city) and only an hour away from Minneapolis and Saint Paul, so if I ever feel the need to "get out", it's very easy. When I tell people I go here, they don't know where it is. On campus I spend a lot of time everywhere. Probably most of my time in the science building (Ardolf Science Center), because that's where most of my classes are. Outside of class time I'm always with my friends, or working out, or going to ballroom dancing, or something fun like that. We're definitely located in a college town. Saint John's is a town in itself! I love the school's administration. Both schools administration officials really make an effort to make themselves known and present around campus, and even as a first year I can recognize both the presidents of the campuses if I saw them around. The biggest controversies on St. Ben's campus is if we should completely cut out selling plastic water bottles on campus to achieve our "green" goals for the future, and if our diplomas should only say "College of Saint Benedict" on them, or "College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University" (since the two are so interconnected). There is an EXTREME amount of school pride. I believe the students here truly consider this one of the best schools in the nation. Something unusual about our schools is that we have such a unique partnership with each other. It honestly is one of a kind, and I don't think there's any other like it. I will remember the entire experience of being at this college forever. Something that sticks in my mind is the first time a Johnnie gave up his seat on the bus for me. I was so extremely flattered, and I didn't even know men did that anymore! The most frequent student complaint is probably that we can no longer buy things from the book store and charge them to our tuition account using our student ID.

Stephanie

Our school is the perfect size, we are still diverse but you could have someone in a class your first year and have four other classes with them before you graduate by chance. You recognize faces. The biggest recent controversy would have to be the sex scandal with the Abbey. Some monks from the prep school (which is on campus, but separate from campus, so we don't see much of the prep school) were accused of molesting students like 20 years ago. That is usually a big problem for some people looking at our school but it really isn't a problem. There is a lot of Johnnie pride, not so much Blazer pride. This is probably due to the fact that the Johnnies are far more well known. Johnnie football is unbelievably huge, everyone goes to the game and we were even rated as one of the top ten places to watch football by ESPN right next to schools like Purdue. An unusual thing about our schools are that they are reportedly haunted. Supposedly we are on a list of the top ten haunted campuses or something like that. There are plenty of ghost stories to tell. It's probably just because our campuses are so old (SJU est. 1857 CSB est. 1914). One experience I'll always remember is the Tommie Johnnie game my first year. It was here and it was not only Tommie Johnnie but it was homecoming, it drew a crowd of over 16,000. It was a close game all the way through, we ended up going into overtime. Tommies scored and made the extra point, we came back and scored... the ball was kicked for the extra point, hit the post and bounced out. We lost the game by 1 point. It was the first Tommie Johnnie game we've lost in a long time and the first homecoming we've lost in 50 years (or something like that). We all just stood there in silence, watching the Tommies storm the field and planting their flag on the 50 yard line, right in the middle of the huge SJU in the middle of the field. Worst. Day. Ever.

Ali

I love my school so much! I am a Biology major with a minor in Pre-Pharmacy. The classes that you will take are very challenging but with a good amount of studying and preparation you can do very well. One thing that I highly appreciate is that our professors are very willing to help you in class as well as outside of the classroom. If you are stuggling they want to help you get right back on track. The community feeling of the campus is one my favorite aspects of the college. Having a boys and a girls campus seems to be a negative at first, but it is great to have 2 of everything (libraries, gyms, classrooms). There are plenty of clubs and organizations to get involved in no matter what your interests are!

Amy

As a Biochemistry major (Pre-med intent), I feel that my classes are challenging me, yet I am not becoming frustrated because I can't keep up with the class. All of my Profs are approachable at anytime and are willing to help if I ask. Here--I am not just a number--and all of my teachers and classmates know my name. The science department is overall very challenging and provides a great education. This school also competes at the D3 level so I am also able to participate as a member of the Golf team. I will also be playing in the Symphonic Band and a member of the Pre-Med club. Whatever your interests, you can get involved with as much or as little as you like.

Kaycee

CSB/SJU is just the right size school. It is small enough that professors can build relationships with their students and understand their interests, but big enough that our institution has the opportunity to offer a wide range of courses, activities, intramurals, etc. Our school is known for its tight kit community--everyone looking out for each other.

Katherine

First of all, CSB is THE BOMB! I love it here. I'm from Upstate New York and I hardly get homesick because I love it here so much, I can't even imagine going anywhere else! I don't even think that I could pick just one aspect and name it the best. Some nice things are that we have two of everything here. We have two libraries, two gyms, four places to eat on campus, and this is all for a small liberal arts school. Tell me where you can find that! Another "best" aspect is definitely the people! You won't find better people anywhere else on the face of this earth, I can tell you that much! Everyone is so nice and welcoming, I call this place my home now! I can't imagine not having the friends that I have now. Even people who you may not even know will come up and say hi, just because they want to! It's such a great place to be in and it's such a positive atmosphere! I love it!

Brianna

I am a St. Ben's student born and raised. Coming from a mother and father, brother, sister and whole crew of relatives who attended this school, one may think I was destined to come here. I however was convinced otherwise, I refused to even look at the college initially because I wanted to do something different and do my own thing. However, in the college search it all came down to comfort. I realized this is where I felt at peace, I felt comfortable. Beyond that I realized that even having a history of family attending these schools I still can create my own path and be known for me and who I am and the things I have and will continue to accomplish. I love both of the campuses and there are a variety of places to study, meet friends and just hang out. There is really a club, group, sport, team, or activity for everyone if they choose. I love the atmosphere and the overall feel, walking around you see people you know and it's always nice to see a familiar face.

Jenna

The students and faculty form such a supportive environment to learn and grow. Its such a gift to find such a perfect fit of a college for me with the moderately small student population, the amazing reputation, the community, the beautiful setting, and the challenging academics. There is not one thing I would change about this college and I LOVE IT!

Xai

It is one of the best private Catholic college in the nation! It offers a wide variety of resources to lots of great opportunities. The people are great and embrace the comfort of the small town community aspect. The education we get is great, for it compells us to become better and an inspiration for others. It is a great fit for most people and will challenge you intellectually and spiritually!

Maggie

I absolutely love school here. I can't even say it enough. My favorite part about CSB/SJU is the people. I've met many life long friends who have made the experience wonderful. The professors are top-notch as well, helping in any way that they can. They definitely go above & beyond their job description. I have had SO many opportunities here as well. Studying abroad in London was a once in a lifetime experience and I gained so much knowledge and independence while abroad. I feel confident with my options in the future because I know that the strong network of alums will help in any way they can. As a senior, I am relieved to have Career Resources on campus because they have helped with my resume, interviewing skills and more. I will definitely turn to them when I start thinking about job options in the near future.

Stephanie

I could not imagine a better fit for me at my school. I LOVE everything about this school. As a tour guide, I am often challenged by the visitors' question of "What don't you like about your school?" The only thing I can say is that I don't like the way one of the science centers at SJU looks. I would just change it so that that building and the library are the same red brick as the other buildings on campus. I love this school for many reasons: the core curriculum/ liberal arts education, friendly and helpful faculty, small class sizes, the strong sense of community, the connections that you receive going into the job market, but most of all the ENDLESS amount of activities that our school provides. There is never a dull moment here. I also love where we are located in St. Joseph! It's got a lot of cute shops and is a friendly community. My friends that go to other schools say that I'm too "obsessed" with my school but in reality, I just think that I am enjoying my college experience to the fullest!

Ivette

The best thing about the school is the partnership with Saint John's. This means that we have two of everything; two libraries, two main dinning halls, two recreational facilities, three science buildings and two of a lot of other things. My school is just right; it's small enough to see familiar people and have small classes, but it's big enough to where you can find people you have never seen before. when i tell people about my school they talk about our football and are curious about the unique partnership between Saint John's and Saint Ben's. I spent time everywhere around campus really. There is a lot of school pride; this is shown during football games, we have an average game attendance of around 8thousand. Our school size is 4thousand, so a lot of the extra attendance is by alumni and their families. I don't have any complains or haven't heard any from other students.

Chelsea

My overall opinion of CSB/SJU is very positive. I have such a love for this institution and what it has done for me. I have flourished into the woman I am today because of the opportunities I have been given. The best thing about this school is the community. I spend most of my time at the clemens library on campus. The experiences I will always remember are the friends that I have made.

Madolynn

CSB/SJU are great schools. The campus's are beautiful. The students and faculty are great.

Kelsey

When I tell people I go to St. Ben's, they often ask me why I would go to an all-women's school. I guess I technically go to a single-sex school, but it never feels like that. If St. John's wasn't here or we were seperated institutions, I would not be here. I love our two campuses and the people they attract are the reason why I am here and can call this place my home.

I love this school. My favorite parts are the students, staff, and the community aspect. My school is the perfect size. I'd change the visiting hours and off-campus options if I could. People respect the fact that I go to CSBSJU. Most of my time is spent on homework and class related activities. St. Joseph is definitely a college town. I spend most of my time in academic buildings or libraries. Big recent controversies have been the bottle-less CSB policy and the new off campus policy at CSB. Lots of school pride. The unusual thing is the dual campus partnership. I'll remember all my friends. I'd say the most frequently complained about thing here is the visiting hours.

Breann

The best thing about CSB is the community - everywhere you go, people smile and say hello. The professors are extremely dedicated to the students, and the campuses are gorgeous! Sometimes, the school seems too small, but starting a new semester makes you realize how big it is when you see new faces around campus. Most of the time, it is just the right size. I spend a lot of time in the library, dining area, work-out center, and hanging out in the dorms. St. Joseph (the small town St. Ben's is located in) is definitely a college town. It is close to St. Cloud, so it is super easy to go to Target, mall, etc (there is even a bus that runs there on weekends). There is a lot of school pride, especially at football games. The Johnnie football team always does really well, and it's so fun to wear red, go to the stadium, and cheer them on!

Emily

Girls live with girls and guys live with guys. It's not that big of a deal, but you do have to make a bit more of an effort to make friends with the opposite sex. Plus, the girls' dorms are way nicer than the guys'! I think that the attention to gender is very interesting at our school Both the Women's and Men's Centers host very interesting speakers and I've enjoyed learning about this. In my time at CSB|SJU, I have traveled to Kansas City, Chicago, Dallas and just returned from a semester abroad in South America. There are so many opportunities to travel and see more of the US and the world, it is hard to not take advantage of at least one of these experiences!

Christine

Best thing: the people One thing I'd change: we don't have a cheerleading squad of any kind or a figure skating club Size: about 4,000 total including Bennies and Johnnies Reaction to me telling people I go to CSB: Where is that? Oh, is that Catholic? Didn't your dad/sister/uncle/cousin go there? Where I spend most of my time on campus: the libraries College town: St. Joeseph, Minnesota. It is TOTALLY a college town. St. Joe has a population of about 5,000 and thrives on our college community. The town comes alive on weekends. Largest recent controversy: the 4-year residency plan. The administrations recently decided that, starting with the class of 2014, students will be required to live on campus all four years. Is there school pride?: YES! we live and breathe red. Come to one of the Johnnie football games and you will be blown away by our spirit and instantly hooked. Anything unusual: well, only the girls live at CSB and only the guys live at SJU. We also don't run on a Monday-Friday schedule. We have a 6 day schedule; this results in every week being a little bit different Experience I'll always remember: orientation, first year formal, the fruit-at-the-finish triathlon, everything

Lindsey

Csb is truly a community. Everyone is friendly and courteous and very helpful! St.Joe really supports the college.. the businesses really love all the kids. When i tell people in the midwest that i am from st. ben's, they are very excited, i have even met some alumni who are extremely proud of their school and genuinely interested in other people that attend.

Charlie

When people ask me where I go to school and I say St. Ben's, usually after the blank stare I receive I explain that it's the sister school to St. John's. "Oh, the school with the great football team?" Yeah, that one. But while the connection to SJU is awesome and I love Saint John's just as much as St. Ben's, CSB is more than just that connection. The two best things about St. Ben's are the excellent professor/student relationships and the amazing sense of community the school provides. I love St. Ben's and have never regretted my decision to go here even though I'm funding my own education.

Maria

The best thing about CSB is the sense of community we have with each other. Everyone at St. Ben's gets along and are nice to each other. The class sizes are small and the professors are very personable.

Mary

CSB is an incredible school! From the people to the location to the education to the relationship with St. John's University, this was definitely the school for me! While CSB is rich in traditions especially those traditions from the nuns who founded us, we also have the greater traditions in CSB and SJU. It is always fun to see nuns around campus, at mass, and in classrooms. The campus has such a welcoming feel! Everyone seems to say hello to one another and no one is afraid to chat. The College of Saint Benedict is truly a unique school and I am glad to call it my school!

The best thing about CSB/SJU is the community aspect of the school. It is like one big family, where everyone cares about each other. People say hi to strangers when walking on campus and open doors for a fellow classmate. CSB/SJU wants more than an education for their students, they want their students to learn community living and being a good person. The school pride at the school is amazing. Football games are always packed, however it is more than just current students. The alumni have a huge presence in the school still. There is the saying... "once a Bennie, always a Bennie."

CSB is a liberal arts institution in coordination with SJU. CSB offers small class sizes and a personalized education which is hard to come by. Professors flexibility and willingness to help any student is amazingly helpful. Furthermore, the community atmosphere on campus is unique. Everyone, including professors, students, and of course the monastics on campus are incredibly friendly.

I love CSB. It is a college for women, but we are partnered with St. John's, so classes are on both campuses and are co-ed, just like all events and clubs are. From the first day of Orientation I felt like a member of the community at CSB. The size is perfect for me; having around 2,000 students means that my professors will get to know me as a person, not just a number, yet we have the resources of the big schools. I felt at home at CSB the first time I visited and that hasn't changed. The members of the monastic community on campus are so friendly and welcoming. They smile and say "Hello" to anyone they pass and they are always available to talk. My fellow classmates are so diverse in their backgrounds and interests so I have no problem fitting in and finding people to have fun with. If I could change anything, I would move the school a bit closer to my home. CSB is about ten minutes from St. Cloud and buses take you there on the weekend so I can shop at the mall, grocery store, Target, or catch a movie, which is great. CSB is located in St. Joseph, which is a very cute town. It is a small town but I like it because I don't get too distracted by things other than my studies.
