College of William and Mary Top Questions

Tell us about the sports scene on campus.

W&M sports are... nothing to write home about. I am on the executive board for our student pep organization, the Tribal Fever, and we are working every day to improve the atmosphere at games. The best part about this? It's working. Even when we lose, students have fun at games. Football and basketball are popular, with free give-aways and theme nights, and we are surprisingly good at soccer and cross-country.

Sports at the College are not as huge as they are at some schools. I graduated from a high school with 2,000 students (William and Mary has nearly 6,000 students), and my high school's football stadium was larger than the College's, believe it or not. That's not to say students do not come out to the games. They definitely do, and there are always huge numbers of tailgaters outside of Zable Stadium where the games are held. If you're looking for a school with a pervasive emphasis on the sports, William and Mary might leave some things to be desired. But you’ll definitely find a substantial number of students who consistently show off that Tribe Pride in the stands, rain or shine, and the Griffin will always be there with a ready Tribe high-five!
