Colorado State University-Fort Collins Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

David

The student body is diverse more than I thought coming out here because my previous school only 1/3 were americans.

Paige

i think that gothic type people would feel really out of place at CSU. i've really enjoyed the programs that have been put on by ASCSU promoting diversity.

Rachel

Not interested.

Charlea

I love the students here, i have had no bad experiences. I believe that almost anyone could fit in at CSU because its students are accepting and very welcoming. Most of CSU are from Colorado.

Meagan

There are a lot of different groups here. While them majority of students are white, they come fromvarious backgrounds. Different types of students are always socializing with other students, and there does not seem to be just one group of people.

Becca

I don't have a LOT of experience with groups on campus....I ignore them a lot when they're on the plaza cause I usually have to get to class, but it seems like there are a lot of good ones out there. You can really get into whatever you want here, my ex roommate got really into the swing dancing club and I have another friend who does sports for KCSU. There's a lot of opportunities for that stuff. Everybody is cool though, I mentioned that before, and I meant it. You could probably strike up a conversation with 10 random people and find you liked talking to 9 of them. Everybody, no matter what they're into or what they look like, for the most part, seems pretty grounded and normal here. And you've got a lot of people from in-state, and a definite fair amount of people from around the country. I have lots of friends that fit into both categories. You really do get all types, but I've found that its a good thing.

Chris

I haven't had any time to explore the different clubs/groups on campus or even know anything about the the student government. However, I will openly say that I disagree with certain clubs that don't seem to bring any positive aspects to the campus.

Dustin

I believe that a muslim student would probably feel pretty out of place at CSU. Other than that there is a great diversity of religion at CSU. The only problem I have had with religion is the people on campus who try to get you to convert to their religion. I believe different types of students interact, but just like anywhere else people from different backgrounds usually feel more comfortable around each other. I believe there need to be more minorites, because CSU is defintiely almost all white, and in terms of race there is very little diversity. Most people at CSU come from pretty well off families, although there are plenty of exceptions, and most college students no matter how much money their parents have are usually in a little financial trouble.

Tiffany

I like the people on campus. There is a variety of different diversities which makes campus interesting. Most students wear jeans and a tshirt to class. However i would say college is like high school on steriods, there are still cliques.

Parker

Everyone wears CSU gear to class. Its weird.

Stephanie

The groups on campus are all open to everyone inviting to all and fun to join and be a part of. Students seem very aware in all the programs and signs they make. Students always talk to you and are always friendly

Vanessa

I am not sure exactly how the student body is....Like stated before I talk to some of the kids in my classes but then I head home right away.

Robin

Csu is not ht emost diverse campus, but I have never run into any problems. Most students were jeans and a sweatshirt. Normally something relatively comfy. Not super formal. most students are in-state. Most students come fom middle to uppermiddle class. Money isnt too big of an issue- in terms of paying tuition and stuff. Most students are conservative.

Kyle

Interesting.

Alex

I don't think that CSU is very racially diverse, but I know a number of friends of different ethnicities who are not discriminated against in the least. I also have a number of gay friends who are open about it, and not descriminated against. CSU is a pretty accepting place for the most part. I would say most of the population is upper middle class and christian, but I don't think that there is discrimination toward people from other back grounds. I wish the student body was more politically active, but there are some students who are.

Gene

What do the president and vice president actually do??

Carly

I do not think that our campus is diverse at all. I think everyone who is not white would probably not feel like they fit in more than people with different religious views, because you cannot see the difference. I think most students are from CO then TX, CA, MI.

Josh

The people at CSU are really cool. everyone is realy friendly except for the strange guy who works at the lsc who collects the trash but other than the people are awesome

Caitlin

Good diversity when it comes to student body. I have made a lot of great friends that i could not have found back home. The politics at CSU are great, giving everyone a chance to be heard.

Troy

For the most part CSU is a very accepting student body, compared to that of CU. Here if someone doesnt know you they will at least make an attempt to talk to someone they dont know, where if you were at CU if they dont know you they wont even talk to you to seem friendly. I know from past experiences to go hang with friends at CU, that they really are arrogant and dont know what its like to be accepting of all people.

Melissa

I think CSU does a really good job at implementing diversity onto campus. There are clubs for every race, women, gay/lesbian group you can think of. CSU is not cliquey at all, unless you are a part of greek life. Everyone is accepted and treated equal. Financial backgrounds might be important for financial aid but it is not an issue on campus at all. No one talks or brags about that stuff. In classes, students usually wear sweats or jeans. It's a very casual atmosphere here.

Daniel

As I said earlier in the survey, the student body was kind of a big shock to me. I expected huge changes from high school in the maturity level of students but realized very quickly that college was just a fifth year of high school basically. Also, CSU advertises that they strive for diversity on campus but if you look around, it is till a predominantly white campus. I happen to live in Braiden and be part of the key academic community which houses a good deal of black students, but other than at Braiden, there are very few blacks or latinos compared to whites. And unfortunately, the black students tend to all stick together almost segregating themselves from everyone else and therefore several negative stereotypes are used on campus.

Shannon

I think people are pretty fair on campus about race, but not religion. I swear you can't walk to the clark building without being harassed about religion. I think since it is a college town, anything goes. I would though have to say the type of person that I don't think would necessarily belong is free spirited hippies and such. Most students wear hoodies, jeans, flip flops, uggs, and north face jackets. I would have to say a lot of different people interact with one another. Most of the population of CSU is from Colorado. The financial majority background is middle to high class. I would have to say that surprisingly a lot of kids I associate with are politically aware. I would have to say that most kids in a college town are fairly liberal. I think everyone wants to make loads of cash, or else we wouldn't be in school anyways.

Torry

I think it sucks that the student body is not more diverse (racially etc.) I wish we had more of each group represented on campus to make everyone feel more belonging.

David

The students that go here are awesome, they are all the same kinds of people.

Jennifer

most of the CSu students are from colorado. i think that this is good becasue personally i enjoy knowing people and also i think that it makes the world smaller and more tie togetgher for me.

Tate

Just perfect!

Leah

Unfortunately, there's still a lot of bias toward minority groups on campus. I think there is a lot of ignorance among individuals, and there are a lot of clique type groups on campus. People will stay within what they know and are most comfortable with, so you tend to find a lot of people that will hang out primarily with people they know from high school, with people they know from their dorm floor, or within their specific major. I've noticed a large trend of wearing whatever one slept in to go to class. It's a lazy trend, one that I don't personally agree with. CSU students range from all over the country, and the world, but a large portion of the students I've met hail primarily from Colorado. There are groups of people on campus that are aware of what's going on in the world, and are even active in political groups. Then there are groups of people who are only aware of the recent drama in their circle. I suppose you'd get that anywhere.

Frances

i'm surprised to see so many students at CSU driving brand new hummers, audi's, bmws and so on. first of all i can't believe parents would spend that kind of money their college student, what is a student to learn about life if every material object they could ever ask for is handed to them whenever they want it.

Emily

There is a very diverse group of students up here. There are constanly groups that share their experiences with whoever would like to know about them. Students are very laid back and nice up here. It makes the enviorment very easy to live in. The majority of CSU students are from Colorado, there are alot of different states in the US that students are from and other coutnries also. The students are alwasy very active. There is countless actvities that they are invovled in.

Harper

I think CSU is very equal in their views of other races and religions. Unfortunately, there is not much diversity here at CSU. But no matter what the race or religion, CSU most likely has a group or club geared toward them. In terms of financial background, it ranges from lower income to high income backgrounds. The students who are out of state typically have the higher income background due to the high out of state costs here at CSU.

Bobby

The only thing that kind of sucks about the student body at CSU is the lack of diversity. It's almost an all white campus which I think is hard for a lot of minorities coming in.

Maggie

I have not had many experiences yet because i have not been on campus lonb. Most CSU students are from colorado and there are not many from out of state. I don't think many students are politically aware.

Sam

Student body seems well diverse.

Adam

The student body is diverse and non-racial. I am an african american attending this school and i have not ran into anything racial and i also have not ran into any altercations with anyone.

Cameron

We have a fairly diverse student body. We have kids from farms, more liberals from the Boulder area, city kids, and also a group of international students. I feel like in trying to embrace that diversity, parts of the university have gone too far in trying to be politically correct and end up frustrating and discriminating against other groups. Res life is absurd with the things they mandate throughout the university, for example not being able to call a romantic comedy a "chick flick." We have lots of advocacy groups for GLBT, African Americans, women, etc. all trying to raise awareness for their cause. I feel like in light of all of this there is some reverse discrimination going on against conservative people.

Brynlie

CSU has a lot of student organizations pertaining to many different ethnicities. CSU has many different races, but I sometimes feel there is a lot of middle easterners. I think that most students comes from middle class families.

lisa

there is a wide range of ppl that go to csu. i have mostly come across kids from colorado, with pretty stable backgrounds financially. everyone seems to interact.. there is obvious clicks.. but there is everywhere. and overall id like to think everyone is intellectual, although those arent the conversations that i usually hear.

Christina

CSU has a great diversity. Just walking through campus you can see a variety among sex, race, ecomonic status. I think that CSU also has a relaxed campus and everyone is here for the same thing, to better educated themselves. If there were four tables in the dining room you could see so many different type of people. At one table you would most likely see jocks, football players, basketball players, etc. Another table you would probably see the studios kids, studying. At another table more of the "preppy" kids, in nice "in" clothes. And at another table, probably just the average college students.

Shannon

SWEATPANTS! common dress on campus.. and I must say I love that!! I feel like there are a lot of students that are from CO at CSU

Miranda

Coming from a large criminal town to call it Fort Collins and the college together make it where i can feel safe at all times. many peoples background come from a good family some hard times everyone mostly thinks on the positive side of things and tensds to enjoy life a little more than experience back home.

Caitlin

In my experience I do not feel that CSU is a diverse school when it comes to looking at race and ethnicity. While everyone is diverse in their own way, the majority of the students are white. Most students wear jeans and sweatshirts to class and in the spring students will wear jeans and t-shirts or skirts and shorts. I don't feel like I need to dress up when I am going to class, which is nice that I can wear sweat pants and not feel out of place. The campus is even as far as politics are concerned. There are two strong active political groups on campus and each has their voice heard. I do feel students are politically aware. Not everyone will be, but I feel the majority of students know what is going on, who is running, and what each candidate is saying.

Corey

I wouldn't say theres like a equal split of races but theres definitly a mixture of people and it creates a good atmosphere. Everyone's so friendly, i don't ever feel threated or worried for my safety anywhere on campus. There;s a bunch of people from all over colorado, some from kansas, lots from chicago and cali but everyone finds people that they can get along with.

Nicole

I don't really have an experience with groups on campus. I did see a workshop put on by LGBT which was really interesting. I learned a lot especially about myself! I don't think anyone would feel out of place at CSU. there are so many opportunities for people to get invoved and you need something like 5 people to start an organization, so if there was something someone felt was missing, they could start it. Most students are from instate. Mostly business students are the only ones that talk about how much they'll learn.. them and construction management.

Ian

There are a lot of groups on campus, and I personally am not too thrilled about them being on the plaza campaigning all the time for their cause. Most of the time I don't mind, but the religous folks that ask about "Are you going to Heaven when you die" or the young democrats inflatable donkey or the abortion pictures are obnoxious.

Shannon

I would say students generally stick to their group of friends, and it is rare that people really branch out. There are events on campus, and organizations that try to focus on bringing diversity together, but I do not think they are very successful. Students dress pretty casually on campus, unless they are involved with organizations or work on campus.

Joe

I feel like at this school, if you have the motivation and ideas to make a contribution, there are many ways you can go about doing that. Students are pretty understanding as well, and in reality, I feel like there is a lot of equality here among peers. It does have a more conservative feel, so organizations like LGBT or racial diversity groups don't necessarily get all that much attention. But I don't really hear a lot of racial remarks and negative statements toward gay people, so perhaps it is more a sign that people here follow the "live and let live" philosophy. Religion is a different story though. We often get preachers on campus in the plaza that catch a lot of attention.

Amy

Most students wear 'regular clothes' to class. By this I mean that I have seen people wear jeans, t-shirt, workout gear, hats, pajamas, khakis, dress slacks, overalls, dresses, coats, sweaters, and tank tops. There are many different styles also, from comfortable, to hip-hop, to the most popular, to goth, to very professional. I think that anyone could feel comfortable wearing whatever they would like.

Lindsay

Coming from such a small town, CSU seems diverse to me. In high school, everyone was the same. Up here, people are not afraid to be who they are. I had never met someone who considered him/herself a "hippie" before CSU. I know that many people say CSU is not diverse in terms of race, and that's true, but we still have diversity in the likes, qualities, and activities of students.

Alex

Most students wear either jeans and t-shirts/sweatshirts to class or baggy sweats and a hoodie. From whati have heard, most CSU students are from Colorado or the Springs, Denver, or from around Ft. Collins. I have met very few students that are out of state. Ofcourse people cant wait to graduate and they talk about how much money they will make one day, thats most likely why they are attending college in the first place.
