Colorado State University-Fort Collins Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Carly

I think that athletic events are fun to go watch and the shows put on by ASCSU, but that is all i really do. I think that you can find a party any night of the week. I don't think that greek is that important I think it is kinda silly compared to greek at different campuses. Last weekend I watched The OC and went to a party. On a Saturday night you could go bowling, dancing, ice skating, or just to a friends to chill.

Josh

some of the cool clubs at csu are the snow riders. and the social life is amazing.

Caitlin

I am in the design and merchandising leadership team and an officer in fashion group international. I also have a 9 hour a week merit work study with some of my fashion professors. I personally stay up very late to make sure my homework is done well. Everyone is friendly and i look forward to coming back next year.

Troy

Well football is the most popular sport here at CSU, even though they really arent good. I think we spend to much money on getting players to CSU only to have the worst record in NCAA history, why cant we put the scholarship money into other sports like baseball or hockey where the players are good, and they actually win championships not losing records.

Melissa

The most popular groups are the sororities and fraternitys. They do a lot of stuff together. I am currently involved with Fashion Group International which meets every tuesday to talk about fashion, community service, and just to have a support system. I am an apparel merchandising major so it's a perfect fit for me. This weekend I went to washington's bar. It was an 18 and up night it was so much fun to dance and hang out at a bar even if I couldn't drink!

Emmerson

I am not involved in these at all. I like to get away from campus as soon as class is over.

Daniel

The social life at CSU is overall pretty decent. People seem to like to get involved with sports or organizations on campus. There are always people playing pick-up games on the intramural fields when the weather is nice. As for the school sports, unfortunately this year most of our teams were terrible which took away from the attendance greatly, especially with the AWFUL football team. I believe that with a little better athletic program, the attendance would go way up. As for the rest of the social life, there are parties almost every night of the week if you are looking and most are rather welcoming. The town itself is pretty hopping but mostly if you are over the age of 21 because there is quite a big bar scene.

Shannon

I am involved in Fashion Group International (FGI). It is a group majority of fashion majors around the world becoming involved in fashion works and such. Yes, students in dorms leave their doors open. I would have to say another reason people think our school is a joke is because the athletics suck. I met my closest friends from parties and the dorms. If I wake at 2 a.m, I am probably studying or eating. I would say I tend to party one or twice a week. The greek life here is 8{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the population, so i would say it's fairly irrelevant. I worked everyday last weekend and went to an art convention in Denver. I can't think of anything to do on a saturday night, but drink cause Im a raging alcoholic. Off campus I drink tons and go to movies and such.

Torry

There are sooo many extracurricular programs at CSU - it is truly awesome and amazing. There is an outlet for every breed of person. All the programs seem to have a strong pride in what they do- which makes them that much stronger as organizations. It also helps to make a 25,000 student campus seem less overwhelming and shows each student that they can still have quite a strong part in their school and community.

David

SNOWRIDERS baby bad ass. also the downhill mountain bike team is sick. I met alot of my friends through the clubs on campus.

Jennifer

yes students in the dorms leave their dorm room doors open. granted i am in a great dorm and an even better hall. i am in a sorority and it is a fairly popular part of CSU.

Tate

We need more international events rather than just women at noon or thw health and wellness repeated activities

Leah

From my point of view, the most popular organizations and teams are Greek life and football. Potentially basketball, when they're doing well. Football always has a large student turnout, but that may be from the pre-game tailgating that's allowed. At the beginning of the basketball season, we saw more students, but since both men's and women's teams had a poor season, student turnout dwindled considerably. Guest speakers, depending on the topic, usually have a large crowd as well. You can typically find a party on any given night, with exceptions of finals week. People will party around here for any reason. Homecoming is likely the most popular tradition, as well as the Furry Scurry run held annually.

Emily

Sports are very popular. But if you can't play for the Varsity teams you can always play an intrmural sport or join a club. Key Service is a group I'm involved with, it is a comunity serive oriented group. It is a good experience and very fun. My good friends that i have met are from classes that I have taken with them, or peopel I live with in my resident hall. Whatever you'd like to do on the weekend you can do it. There are so many options and there aren't just parties or people aren't just staying home. If you want to have a movie night with friends and stay in one night or go to the club and dance you can. People are always doing different things and there are a lot of options

Harper

Seeing as that 95{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of our sports teams aren’t very good, no one sport is more popular than the other. Greek life is very popular here at CSU and i feel that our Greek life has a pretty good reputation compared to other schools. If I'm awake at 2am on Tuesday, then it means I am up working on homework for my CIS150 class because probably like the week before I underestimated how long it would take me.

Bobby

Before I was 21 there were always parties going on everyday of the week. And now that I am 21 most people go to the bars rather than house parties. Football games are a big deal. Tons of people tailgate and go to the homegames. I know there are a lot of students involved in intramural sports and other various student groups around campus.

Maggie

I am invovled in a sorotiy and enjoy it alot. I wish that the greek life was more popular on campus thoug. In the dorms students do not leave there doors open very much so it is hard to get to know them. If I am awake late it is because i have homework or just want to watch some TV. I think people party on the weekends but not as much furing the week.

There are no real popular groups usually the fraternities or sororities are popular but only 8{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of csu students are greek. The same with sports they dont have supreme popularity over anyone else.

Cameron

Greek life is pretty prevalent, but I was never involved in that. The agricultural clubs are big. Parties can be found most nights of the week, but my closest friends and roommates are from an on campus ministry from a local church. If we are awake at 2am on a Tuesday morning, we are most likely hanging out at my house, drinking hot cocoa, making pancakes, and singing worship songs.

Brynlie

I am involved in CSU's Golden Poms Dance Team, NSCS Honors Society and I hope to either join a sorority or CSU's Student Government next year. I think that CSU provides its students with great activities that will enhance the college experience! It isn't a huge partying school but if you want to go out and have a good time you will defiantly find somewhere to do so!

lisa

well i am not one to be involved with anything besides classes and graduating at csu.. so my social life is friends from the dorms, and people that i have been friends with since high school. id day ppl party a lot.. and i often wonder how they stay in school.. but if they can have that balance then more power to them. if i was awake on 2 am on a tuesday i would most likely be drunk.. i dont study that late.. haha! and i guess you can do any activity that you can think of sober on the weekends.. if you choose to.

Shannon

I feel like people are very into intramural sports which is awesome, my dorm hall did not leave their doors open, our athletic teams struggled this year hope for some improvement next yr!

Miranda

With living in the dorms it has helped alot with my social life. hanging out in other peoples dorms is mostly what happens on week nights and then during the weekend Fort collins most all the time has something that is going on.

Caitlin

The most popular organization on campus us SAC, which is Student Alumni Connection. This group works with alumini to market CSU and give current students opportunities to meet with alumni in their various majors. One group I am in involved with is Wellness Club. Wellness Club works to promote healthy lifestyles and wellness around CSU and Fort Collins. We help disabled students in sporting events, we work with nursing homes, and we help with the 9 News Health Fair. Students will only leave their dorm room doors open if they are home, this is a safety reason. But for the most part when students are in their rooms, the doors are open. I met my closest friend in the dorms. She was my freshman roommate. We clicked instantly and we are still best friends today. Greek life is only 6{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body. It is not necessary to be in a sorority or fraternity to feel involved on campus, which I think is wonderful. One thing to do on a Saturday night is go down to Old Town and listen to local bandsm go to a fashion show, or see if there are any events going on around campus. We have guest speakers come all the time to talk with students. Last year Jane Goodall came to campus and actually gave a free speach to all interested students.

Corey

Frats and sororities aren't that huge, like people do it but its not that big of concern to most students. Being a freshman, i party pretty much all the time ha living in the dorms is kind of crappy in the party aspect because r.a.'s are stupid but you'll meet people and know people of places to go. don't get me wrong tho the dorms are pretty fun too, there's always something to do.

Nicole

Since there is such a small percentage of people involved in Greek Life I can't say that those are the most popular, but I would say probably football. Just the fans/followers in general. Football and tailgating are a huge thing at CSU and there is a sense of pride associated with it (well there used to be before the football team went downhill). I met my closest friends in the dorms. the dorms are an awesome way to meet people! I'm still friends with some of them and even live with a few. I think that living in the dorms is neccessary to your college experience, I honestly believe it could shape who you are the rest of your years here. People party pretty often, I'm not 21 so the big thing is house parties. And not everyone does that scene, but I think it's a part of college.. and you have to go to at least 1 party!! They're a lot of fun and a great way to meet up with friends and unwind from school. As long as it's not constant and doesn't get out of hand, I don't see the problem with it. On a Saturday night you could go to the movies, the hooka bar, or a funky coffee shop. There's lots of things to do around town!

Ian

Greek life is getting a lot of flak on campus due to groups like PIKE or other stray fraternities giving it all a bad names. I am involved with Delta Sigma Pi, the professional co-ed business fraternity which is a great networking and business organization that I landed my first post-college job with. Thre are a lot of other events that you have to attend. Homecoming game, the Bonfire, Moby Maniacs etc. I am also like a lot of others here in the fact that I am working along with school, and while it is a time constraint, it helps me prioritize as well as have a little more spending money for extra stuff like concerts, trips etc.

Shannon

Events on campus really vary in popularity. Some events will sell out immediately, and others you couldn't pay students to attend. I have seen that for a lot of sporting events sometimes students receive free stuff for attending, and I do believe that that increases the attendance and interest. Greek life is not that important on campus because it is such a large campus and proporotionally not that many people are part of it.

Joe

Obviously the most widely recognized groups on campus are fraternities and sororities. They are even bigger at this school than I expected, though there is a bigger variety and the stereotypes about them are, for the most part, not true. I don't think fraternity or sorority students drink any more or less than the overall student body, so that stereotype is pretty inaccurate. Partying is huge though. College is the time of life when a lot of students feel free to really experiment and try things out. Sometimes it goes too far, and people end up dying from alcohol poisoning or other things. As a person who doesn't drink, not going out and partying with peers certainly does make me feel like an anomaly and I miss out on a whole different side of the college social scene. I don't think people shun me for that, it's just that I spend my time doing other things. Other students do respect that a lot though, and I don't feel pressured to conform or fit in.

Amy

I met my closest friends at work. Because we spend so much time there we were able to really get to know one another and were able to become friends.

Elise

I'm involved in the professional business fraternity- Delta Sigma Pi. This organization is so great- it gives me professional experience and out of classroom lessons. It has helped my public speaking (speeches for elections) and also my business etiquette. Every guest speaker that comes in teaches me something new and I love the people who I would have never met if not for this organization.

Lindsay

I'm not into the drinking/party scene, but my life is never boring! I have many close friends that I met at my Bible study and Fraternity. We have lots of events that range from scavenger hunts to progressive dinners to formals. I also do a lot of volunteering on weekends.

Alex

Most popular team: Football Team If i were to be awake at 2am on a tuesday: i would probably be studying My closet friends i met at my high school, Loveland High Last weekend i hung out with freinds, and worked Saturday night with out drinking would involve maybe a dinner and a movie What do i do off campus? work and hang out with freinds that dont attend CSU

Riley

Students in the dorms do leave their doors open which is nice and accomodating giving people a better feeling of togetherness and compatibility. Athletic events are fairly popular, but I have experienced a slight shift of people not wanting to go to athletic events because we rarely win. I like to play ping pong with my friends at the dorms when there is nothing to do.

Hannah

The dorms are a very fun place to be, because there is always someone to talk to. For the most part people leave their doors open as long as they aren't doing homework. My closest friends are my roommate and other people who live in my hall. The athletic events are popular, especially football games. If I'm awake at 2 am on a Tuesday it's because of the loud people next door. I don't normally stay up messing around that late but a lot of people do. Off campus there is bowling, shopping, and restaurants. On saturday nights we like to go to movies, and even go to parties but not drink.

Christine

I'm involved in Snowriders which is the ski and snowboard group. I have met some of my really good friends through the club and the trip we went on over winter break to Jackson Hole was probably the best trip EVER! We had so much fun with everyone riding and all the powder we got. Joining the club was probably the best decision i have made at CSU. People tend to party any night of the week. I know I definitely have but its not like an every night think. I drink on the occassion school night and pretty much every Friday and Saturday.

Tom

It has a great social life aspect.

Molly

There are so many different types of clubs on campus that anybody is allowed to join and is welcome no matter what major. I am in a group called FGI that is a fashion group that loves spending their time doing volunteer work. I love attending the meetings every week because it keeps me updated on current events in my major and also keeps me active in the community.

Megan

Being a freshman and living in the dorms has been a great experience. I live in Corbett Hall and I love the people I live with. In my hall, our doors will be open for the most part, especially Thursday-Sunday. We enjoy socializing with one another and having fun living so close to each other. My closests friends are the ones in my hall that I spend the majority of my time with. We all have classes together, work out and eat and hang out with each other. In my opinion, people usually party every weekend, unless something special comes up during the week. Fraternities and Sororities are for some people, but not everyone. I think they are a great way to meet new people and makes adjusting to college life easier for many, but you don't need to join one just for those reasons. There's plenty of other ways to do that!

Julie

A lot of sorities and fraternities exist on campus but not in relation to other universities. Right now I am only involved in an organization called Delta Sigma Pi.This is a business fraternity on campus. Unfortunately I have not gotten involved as much in that organization as I would like but I found it to be a positive experience overall. School is always my first prority but I would like to learn how to balance my life better. A lot of people here on campus already have boyfriends and girlfriends but at the same time it is a good place to date. People seem to be very open and willing. My closest friends up here are my roomates I got to know them by partying. I would say I party about twice a week and that is pretty consitent with other CSU students. One could also visit Denver which is what I did las weekend. A person would also be able to find many sober activities.

Brynn

I'm so glad fraternities and sororities are looked down on my CSU students.

Andy

The most popular group on campus would have to be the football team. Everyone goes to support them at games and they are well known around campus. I think CSU students party a lot, but no more than other colleges in the nation. If I am awake at 2am on Tuesday, I am either studying or talking to friends.

Mason

I currently am involved with one club and a professional business fraternity. They both are directly associated with the College of Business and provide a number of leadership, community service, and fundraising opportunities. When I'm not at school, I am at home working on web design projects for my business or meeting with students for a junior high youth ministry that I lead. The way I get around is either by car or motorcycle. Fort Collins is a perfect town for a motorcycle or scooter, especially with all the free parking in town. You can park up front every time without having to spend hours fighting and stalking people for spots. Parking passes for CSU are over $100 and a motorcycle is only $50 for the whole year. They're very practical.

Cody

Social is fun. Most Saturday nights are drinking and partying. Most people are firendly but like many campuses we have drunken rude frat boys too

Bevan

There are lots of things to do in Fort Collins that don't involve drinking. Even when our teams aren't winning, going to football and basketball games are really fun. We do have some club teams, like baseball and lacrosse who are pretty good and fun to watch. We have a student organization called ASAP that puts on events for the univeristy. Last night I went to see the movie "Forgetting Sara Marshall" for free, two weeks before it was released thanks to ASAP. Fort Collins is a great city too. Old Town has lots of restaurants, concert venues, and a cinema-cafe to keep us entertained on the weekend.

Matt

The first month of campus, every door was open and it wouldnt be considered weird to walk into a unknown room and start a conversation. but these days, its a little different. i do enjoy Sundays because everyone relax. doors are re-opened and everyone just kicks it, whether its watching a movie, playing video games, talking about the weekend or what ever. its a very relaxed environment. If i'm awake at 2 in the morning on a Tuesday, i'm probably doing something random, spontaneous, or new. I love it. Whether its playing ultimate frisbe with strangers, sledding down hills on lunch trays, or something else, its most likely different and fun. I believe that Greek life is a great opportunity for students who live in a different state than where they go to school. its a chance to meet lots of people, make a lot of friends, and get involved with the campus life.

Kim

I ma involoved with Navigators and Pi Beta Phi. People in Corbett are very social. Our hall is very close and our door is open pretty much every day. Athletic events are popular at the beginning of the season, then we start to lose everything and no one comes anymore. I am hopefully not awake at 2 am on Tues. But if I am, I am with people in my hall hanging out. I do a lot of activities off campus through my sorority. There are many things to do bsisdes drinking. I dont drink a whole lot.

Kristen

When I went to UNLV and lived in the dorms, I was more active in school activities because the events that took place on campus were the easiest ones to get too. Now that I live off campus I tend to only come to campus for class or to study. - The dating scene in Ft. Collins is pretty good. A lot of people in the same age range that can mingle at selected bars. I dont find that sororities or fraternities are ever important, to me they are just another way to get you to spend your money on something you don't need. I think they feed on peoples insecurities, on coming to a new town, state or leaving your everyday friends behind, and then reel them in with promises of friendship and sisterhood in exchange for a monthy sum.

Sam

I like to go hiking in the mountians.
