Colorado State University-Fort Collins Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Jay

The best advice I can give an incoming student it to find a club or activity to be a part of. Club sports, greek, academic clubs, there is something for everyone. You will become a part of the CSU community and it will enhance your college experience and life in ways you never imagined. So get involved, any way you can, you'll be glad you did.

Allison

ASAP puts on a lot of good productions, bringing speakers, bands, poets, artists, etc to campus. Pre-vet club is pretty popular. Frats and sororities are not that important on campus, you can avoid them pretty easily if you want to. I haven't met any really close friends, but you meet a lot of people in the dorms, and also in clubs and sometimes in classes.

Meredith

I don't like any of the fraternity's or sorority's. All of the students in them think they are better than everyone else on campus, and really their just a bunch of losers looking to buy their friends.

Iris

CSU is not the type of school that completely disregards the fact that students drink, which in my opinion is much more efficentive in moderating academics with a social life. Instead of telling everyone to completely stop drinking and/or partying, CSU has taken on the goal of encouraging students to be balanced when drinking. There are "catchy" advertizements all through out campus that tell students to be balanced, 4 or less drinks, which is much more realistic than completely soberality.

Torry

So much to do... all the time. Intramural sports are a blast, especially when you get a team of friends together.

Torry

There are sooo many extracurricular programs at CSU - it is truly awesome and amazing. There is an outlet for every breed of person. All the programs seem to have a strong pride in what they do- which makes them that much stronger as organizations. It also helps to make a 25,000 student campus seem less overwhelming and shows each student that they can still have quite a strong part in their school and community.

Emily

I don't drink, so for me its easy to find other things to do on the weekends. I like to go bowling, especially on college nights (wed) because bowling is super cheap. Also, I enjoy going to movies or playing Frisbee golf when the weather is warm. Rollandmoore park is a hot spot to play volleyball or on the intramural sand court too. My friends and I enjoy having game nights where we go back to our childhood and play boardgames all night long. Oh, and its really fun to get all dressed up and go out to dinner. Fort Collins has tons of restaurants to choose from so you'll be sure to find any genre of food you're looking for.

Andy

I'm involved in Greek Life on campus here. I am part of the Chi Omega Sorority and am so glad I decided to do this. Athletic events are pretty popular, but would probably have better attendance if our teams were better. If I was awake on a Tuesday at 2am I would either be studying or partying, depending on what I had to do the next day. Most likely, I wouldn't be awake though. Fraternities and sororities are important to me since I'm a part of one, but I would really like to see Greek Life grow over the next few years to become something admirable.

Stephanie

The CSU recreation center is a great place to go workout and it is already included in your tuition that you pay. There is all kinds of stuff to do there and there are group fitness classes there for free that are also awesome.

Emily

Most girls in my hall are very friendly. I was lucky to get an awesome RA, Mary Bowen. She interacts with us and we all have a really good time together. Dating scene for me = non-existant. Majority of friends I have I met on my hall. People party a lot. It's a good time--why not? Saturday nights ususally entail a lot of studying/sleeping/net surfing. I mostly just ride my bike a lot and study.

Jacob

I live off campus and am still getting used to the transition here and do not have a lot of time for organizations and clubs.

Paige

I am not too familiar with the clubs and/or organizations on campus. Being involved in cheerleading on campus takes up a lot of time to be at practices and games but it is such an experience. I met my closest friends through the cheerleading program and through my dorm. Fraternities and Sororities aren't of great interest to me probably because of the stereotypes that pertain to them. On the weekends I usually cheer at games and hang out with friends.

Tyler

Social life at CSU is pretty good. Always something to do and somewhere to go. There is a lot of drinking and partying, but there is also sports to play and other activities. Frisbee golf, volleyball, longboarding, croquet, flag football, lacrosse, rugby ect.

Dylan

I live in the dorms, its quite a friendly environment. Yes we do leave are doors open most of the time. On weekends im mostly with my friends hanging out, we usually go to dinner then a movie or go bowling. Sometimes we even go to Denver or Boulder.

taylor

intermural teams are really big. im involved with alpha phi omega which is a co-ed fraturnity that does communtiy service together. we dont live together but we get together several times a week to do community service and sometimes hang out and watch movies together! its great for me because i wanted to be part of something but i didnt want to have to live in a sorority, plus it looks great on resumes. people party every weekend, thursdays are usually when they start! frats and sororities are not important to me. technically i am in a frat but its not associated with greek life whatsoever which i like, theres too much drama with that scene.

GET INVOLVED!!! I'm in a professional business fraternity and believe it to be the best college choice I have made. Drugs and Alcohol are not forced on you or very visible but can easily be obtained if you want them. The rec sports are GREAT and VERY FUN

Erika

i know that campus organized and sponsored events are a huge hit. they are highly attended and encouraged.

Erika

I feel that most events that are school sponsored are highly attended and encouraged.

Kelly

Dorm life is big, everyone is friends.

Allison

The biggest thing on campus would be CSU football games. Although we had a rough last season, games always have high attendance and pretty rowdy Ram fans. All other sports also draw attention which means there is always a sporting event to watch and Rams to cheer on. The dorms are where people meet most of the friends that they will have for the rest of college. Dorms vary from being very quiet and studios to being loud and partying, either way groups of friends tend to form within them. Greek life is pretty prevalent on campus, but has been put under a lot of scrutiny in the past few years due to alcohol. Fort Collins' Old Town has a great restaurants, shopping, and night life and most students can be found there when they aren't in class. Another popular place to be when the weather is nice is either Horsetooth Reservoir or the Poudre Canyon; both offer plenty of outdoor activities.

Monica

Greek organizations seem to be fairly popular on our campus. They are not overwhelming but they are a good way for students to get involved on campus, meet a lot of new people, and have community involvement. I am involved with Delta Sigma Pi, which is a co-ed professional business fraternity. We learn professional skills from interview skills and resume writing to professional dress and communications skills. Everyone in my hall left their doors open and went to several athletic events, usually football or basketball (depending on the semester). Guest speakers and the theater are not very popular. My closest friends lived on my floor freshman year, none of us knew each other before we moved in but we all got really close that year. If i am awake at 2am on Tuesday I am most definitely studying.

Ryan

The best activities on campus in my oppinion are intermural sports. I enjoy being able to put down the books and play any of the dozens of intermural sports offered here. This spring I am on a flag football team, a soccer team, and in the sand volleyball tournament. and everyweek creats a new game to look forward too.

Matt

Greek life is a big part of CSU social atmosphere. There are many sororities and fraternities on campus. However, several of them have destroyed the Greek life image through incidents concerning alcohol and vandalism of property. They've been properly dealt with and some have lost their charters and are no longer recognized as a chapter at CSU. Dorm room doors, at least during the time I was there, were always left open and people made an effort to talk to one another regularly. Athletic events haven't been as popular recently due to the poor performance by teams. Partying is a regular occurrence around campus. You can ALWAYS find a house party to go to, or a group of people to hit the bars with.

Elizabeth

There is Horsetooth Resevoir, Poudre River, and of course Old Town. All of these are landmarks for Larimer county and they all have their own unique characteristics that make them an attraction to the local residents as well as visitors.

Anna

I think the snowriders club is probably the most popular. Other than that, people mostly party.

Lauren

As a freshman living in the dorms, I can say that my hall is very social. We almost always have our doors open and are out in the hall talking to each other or hanging out in someones room. However, I do know that some floors are not as social and aren't as close with each other. If i'm awake at 2 am I am most likely studying in the hall or watching a movie in someones room.

Maggie

Fort Collins is a great community to get involved in. CSU seems to have SOOO many different clubs and organizations to be involved in. There is literally something for everyone here. Football games are very popular to attend, as are basketball games. I would like to see more promotion for club sports such as rodeo, lacrosse, hockey and baseball. These atheletes aren't always recognized as much as they should be and they are probably better than the football and basketball teams...just saying.... Depending on what group of people you choose to hang out with will depend on how much you are exposed to partying. I do agree that a lot of people at CSU party and there is a lot of underage drinking going on. If you want to distance yourself from it, that's your responsibility...no one can make you drink or go to a party. CSU is no worse and no better than any other college...it's a college, kids are going to test their freedom just to see how much they can get away with.

Vance

I am in Sigma Phi Epsilon fraterinity. Sig-ep is a fraternitity based on gentlemens, scholars and athletes. I belevie it was my best choice in life other than attended CSU. I love sports and we are required to play atleast 1 intermural per semester. While im playing 3-4 it gets others who arent so athletic involved. The dorms are another great place to hang out. Everyones doors are open and people are always doing something entertaining.

Tate

Students in CSU don't accept the students who are not like them. For example, they don't accept the international students.

Kayley

The most popular groups would have to be the athletes because they are praised by the people. I am involved in a number of different athletes along with some of the study groups for classes. In our floor we always leave our doors open. Right now our athletics are not doing so well but I always went to a basketball game or football game because they are fun. I met my closest friends through my golf and in study tables. We have numerous things in common and actually did some projects together which made us laugh. I am on plane home from a golf tournament. There are numerous ram welcome events for incoming freshman and everything. People here party any and every night because they can. Fraternities and soroities are not that important yet many people join to feel a sense of community and find friends. I was in Tucson playing golf for the CSU women's golf team. I am usually traveling for the golf team or going home to see the family. I golf off campus.

Amanda

Athletic events are very popular and a good time to go and enjoy. Dating scene and close friends.. not so much. i know friends from highschool and through randomly meeting them.. I do not talk to anyone on campus and I have not met many people at all.

Reese

Social life is great in Fort Collins because this is a college based town, so everyone is basically a student. Meeting people can be pretty easy.

rachel

Delta Sigma Pi is a Professional Co-ed Business Fraternity that really helps you network with other students and business leaders. Alternative Spring Break is a great way to use your break as a time to give back. Athletic events have been popular until now when our sports teams are pretty bad. If you're awake at 2am on a Tuesday you're either studying or at the Sundance. People party probably 1-3 days per week. I studied, played outside, and went to a Business Fraternity social event last weekend.

Sarah

The dorms at CSU are awesome! I live in Corbett Hall and I think that it is very sociable and fun to live in. Everyone parties a lot. There is a lot of things to do off campus especially since we are close to the Rocky Mountains.

Chelsea

I honestly am not really a club type of person. Most dorms leave their doors open, i live in Corbett and most people do. Athletic events are pretty popular, especially football, even though we kinda suck. It depends what crowd you hang with but my group of friends party a lot, you can pretty much always find something to do any night. Frats and sororities are not that important.

Jesse

The fashion clubs seem to have several events going on during the year. I've seen two phenomenal fashion shows and another one is coming up.

Andrea

i think csu football is probably the biggest thing even though they didn't do too well. the volleyball team was also a ton of fun to watch and they were actually winning most of their games. i would like to see basketball a bigger part of the athletics. all of the intermurals and club teams associated with the rec are popluar. volleyball seems to be a bug activity. when it is warm everyone plays on the sand course. my team actually took second in the tournament! i haven't heard much about a dating scene, there is a party scene however. the parties and bars replace the whole dating thing. there are people who party every night and there are people who never do. it's not a big deal though if someone doens't go out every night. frats and sororities are not very important at all. last weekend my friends just got a new house and i went there for a house warming party. it was rowdie and fun. i also saw stoploss with a big group of friends. if you don't want to drink, there is always going to old town, seeing a movie, seeing a show at the aggie, or anything outside really.

Marissa

All of most closest friends I met in the dorms. It is mandatory for all freshman to live in the dorms...there is a good reason for it, because it helps establish a social network. Fraternities and Sororities have a presence, but not a strong one. If you are interested in joining one you can, but if you don't, it's not like you won't fit in. I spend a lot of time doing stuff for my business fraternity, last weekend we had a progressive dinner and this weekend we have a retreat. Old Town has some great bars and every so often I go to Denver to go dancing.

Brett

Awesome activities to participate in, if you are bored, then you aren't leaving your house

Austin

CSU provides so much it is difficult to be apart of it all, but I have done ok...so far...involvement. But the programs I have been involved in have provided networking with people in high places, as well as students I continue to keep in contact with today. The family atmosphere among the campus and town, mentioned earlier, makes the social life a bit easier...meeting new people.

Kevin

Although our recent athletic endevours have not met my personal standards I still am a proud supporter of any Ram team. Going to my first ever college football game was quite an experience. As I mentioned I joined Delta Sigma Pi, I talgated with them at Mile High before the CU game and I had a great time. Laughing and taunting CU fans is one thing I will never forget. My socail life has really grown here at CSU and I am very happy about that. Another great thing about college is the parties. I usually go out at about 10 and come back at about 3. This is certainly not an experience I had in high school and agian, I love it.

Kate

I'm not really involved with much here at csu although i wish i was. I really want to do the dance team because i love to dance plus i was on the dance team at my highschool for 3 years, however i hardly have any time. The weekends are pretty fun. There is always a party to go to, or you can go to a movie or clubbing!

Bailey

If I am awake at 2am on Tuesday, I am most definitely doing homework. Spring semester has been extremely tough.

Taylor

I'm involved in Delta Sigma Pi, it's a professional fraternity that belongs to the business college. It's an organization that is betters students professionally, personally, and fraternally. We put on events like fundraising, community service, and social events to promote brotherhood.

Chris

You can always find the frat and sorority people on campus. They are always decked out in they appearal representing what they are proud to be a part of. CSU has a frat or sorority for anyone to get involved with and to participate in great events with.

Amy

I've noticed that sports clubs are the most popular thing to do here, a lot of my friends do dodgeball, and sometimes they even play volleyball and tennis. The majority of the people in my hall do leave their doors open, and i think that is a great way to invite people to socialize, as for the people that leave their doors shut, I don't really talk to them.

Jenn

Dorms are seriously the best way to meet people. You just have to leave your door open or walk into someone else's and introduce yourself. It's something I didn't exactly do too well, and I regret it big time. The student government always puts on all sorts of events like movie releases before the movie comes out, and craft night, and the rec center is always offering some kind of great workout or activity. You can't be bored if you look for something to do. Last weekend I went to a surprise birthday party for a girl at work, and learned how to play quarters. I met some great people there just asking the rules of a game they were playing, which made it that much better to be there. Plus it was a luau themed party so everyone was all decked out in swimming suits and leis and coconut bras. It was a blast. Most weekends you can find something like that to go to if you know enough people or are on a sports team. Frats and Sororities really aren't that important. It's cool if you are in one, but I just hear so much drama goes on between the different groups that I don't know if it would really be worth it to be in one. But if I had to choose, I would probably rush for ZTA, just because they seem to be the most diverse sorority- they don't jsut have the girls with the great looks and designer bags.

Liz

Well... football games are very popular, but i do think our team sucks. I hope that our new coach can help get a plan together so we can start winning some games. I think it is rediculous that football players can be on scholarship, get special treatment in classes, and not win a game all year. There is lots to do in terms of outside social life. I often go to the gym, or hang out with friends. Chippers lanes bowling ally usually has special college night and its cheaper than other nights,... there are lots of things for people to do.

Christina

I'm not particuarly exposed to the most popular groups/etc on campus, because the Theatre dept works so closely with itself. Fraternities and sororities are certainly prevalent, Pre Vet and Pre Medica are large (due to the high support for science and medicine on campus,) and the Intermural sports program is very popular. I'm involved with Alpha Psi Omega (honors fraternity for Theatre students) and Young Producers Org (a new organization for students interested in producing and production management.) Traditions/events: Ram Welcome, painting the A, CSU/CU football game, and graduation. People party almost every weekend, sometimes starting Thursday night. They calm down by Sunday. Fraternities/sororities are very important to the students involved in them, but mostly scoffed at by the other students. Last weekend, I stage managed rehearsals, worked backstage and load-out crew for a Dance Festival at the Lincoln center, and worked as asst. lighting designer at a light hang for an upcoming student thesis show. On a Saturday night, you can see a movie, see a theatre/dance show, go dancing or out to eat in Old Town, hang out at the Alley Cat coffee shop, watch movies with friends... Off campus, I work in the CSU theatre and other theatres in the community, go out to eat, or visit friends who live off campus.
