What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Inna

I have been in college for almost three years and i love going to school as education wise and school environment. I feel great about myself when I am at school. College experince thought me a lot of good stuff like having a positive outlook for the future, great connnection with great people, learning something new everyday and just feel good about myself in general.

I am a single mother of two beatiful children so I know how important education is. I have been attending school for three years now and I met so many wonderful people where some of them became my close friends in life and people who i can rely on in difficult situations. I would recommend for everyone to go to school and get their education. College is a place to be not only education wise but friends, college athomoshere, environment and meeting new people.

Setting goals gives me a long-term and short-term motivation. It also gives confidence I need to achieve higher and more complicated goals. By setting and constantly reminding myself of them, I feel as I work harder to achieve them. In order to succeed I believe setting goals is very important. I have set many to myself, some of them I have accomplished but many of them I am still working on. I graduated Pueblo Community College with AGS(Associate of General studies) with 3.75 GPA and transferred to Colorado State University to continue my career in Business Management. This is my second semester at CSU where I met new people. Being a single mother of two children i know that without some kind of education its? hard to achieve the skills needed in the world. By setting and achieving goals for my family make my life and my children?s life a lot more fulfilling and meaningful.

The Most important thing I experienced from the college I attened, was how important professionalism was and no matter where you go the first impression is the lasting impression. So no matter where you go or end doing make sure you try/ do your best because someone is ALWAYS watching.

A sense of accomplishment that I haven't felt from anything else that I have done. Confidence, Job security. Use the skills learned to volunteer and help others. Knowing I can take care of myself and be on my own during college; friendships, great memories. It has given mean a higher education which has been is highly related to my citizenship and family values. The greatest benefit would be the completion of a long term plan/goal. Realizing because of college that there are a lot of things I can accomplish if I want to. Through my studies in high school, I have learned many valuable lessons. Understanding the importance of working toward a quality education is the most important life lesson I have learned. My academics should come first and foremost because that will determine my future and how well I can support myself. As a holder of a graduate degree, I would be ble to take advantage to choose from a variety of job offers.

I got alot of stuff so far out of college, I think the main thing is the education that i been getting. Ya it is kinda difficult at times but I find ways to get throught it. The other thing I got out of college is great new friend. Being 16 hours away from home its kinda hard to see my old ones but I meat plenty of new ones. And the last thing is being out on my own, it is teaching me on how I can no longer depend on my parents but mainly on myself.

My first year into college and i am already in love with the college life. Going to college is for sure going to be one of the best things i have ever done because i am learning so much already and i cant wait to continue my studies through the rest of the years to come and beyond. Two hundred words is not enought to describe what i have already got out of college. The professors and even the people who keep this place running are fun to talk to and be around. CSU-P may be the "small town" college of the colorado but its doing far better than the rest of the colleges in the state and its because the classes are smaller in size and you can actually talk to the teachers and get to know them. By doing so, the knowledge gained here and the connections are truly worth the time spent in hard study.

Ricardo

College gives you the opportunity to open many doors through life and it will provide you with the required tools to be a successful person. Do not work just to "get the job done" but work "doing your best". Your GPA after graduation might be just a number but it is also the reflection of how hard you tried throughout your college experience to be fully prepared for a professional career and to differentiate from everyone else. If one day you feel like you cannot stand classes, homework, or exams anymore just keep going forward and remember that big rewards are waiting for you at the finish line.

Traveling back in time would be amazing, because the choices we make in highschool seem to reflect our choices as college students. Being a college student, I often reflect on my senior year of high school and wonder what I could do differently. Attending three different high schools did help me to transition. However nothing could?ve prepared me for the new experiences of being a college student. Going back to senior year, I?d tell myself that I shouldn?t worry as much about the people and fitting in. I would state that our parents were right when they said no one cares how cool or popular you are in high school, but everyone likes you for what you do and the personality you show to others. High school is great, and I know I?d say to enjoy every minute, but college is just a new experience knocking at your door. One of the biggest facts of life I?d like to tell myself is too never procrastinate. Not on scholarships or school work, because those things will be the biggest stress factors on your life and if you continue it, than your future will be very grim.

If i could go back and talk to myself as a senior in high school i would tell myself that college is over hyped. Dont get stressed out about being by yourself and falling under different influences. To look for more grants and scholorships because they have taxes for every little thing. And last to fully check out the schools, Their location, student to staff ratio, and dorm rooms.

Many words of wisdom come to my mind on what I wish I could have told myself in high school. Put more time into scholarships, volunteer more, and to keep up the good work. I worked hard my senior year of high school striving to get good grades and to pass the hardest english class I had ever day. I should have told myself to go help out others, I did a little volunteer work but not like I could have. In this world there are much worse off than myself. I would have told myself that I needed to save more books are expensive, and that my dad can not afford to help. Tell myself to stand on my own two feet and not rely on others because after high school so much changes. I have learned one thing since leaving high school that I can do it if I put my mind to something I will succeed with flying colors. I am glad I learned so much after leaving high school but it would have been much easier if I could have told myself what was ahead of me, that real adulthood life was coming very fast.

Chelsea

I would of told myself to take more college classes and concentrate more in my studies because high school prepares you for college and college is waht determines your life after you graduate. Also I would of told myself to get more involved with the school and the community, not just be in a couple of clubs.

Justin

Given the chance to go back and talk to myself my senior year, I would definately take the opportunity. In all honesy, I like the way my transition went, but I could not pass up this opportunity. I would tell myself to not be scared at what was to come, because no matter what was ahead of myself, I would accomplish it with my work ethic. Coming into college was a big step for me in becoming an independent adult. Though I was a bit scared of what I was facing, I was able to succede in the transition, which is why I would tell myself that there is no reason to fear the future.

There is always time to change your mind. Don't ever think your stuck at one university or in one major. Life happens and things change. Take your time with school. Grades follow you forever and do your best in every class. Also take college level classes in high school, don't think just because your a senior you can take it easy. The more you get done in high school, the less you have to worry about in college. Scholarships are worth applying for. It takes time and energy, but college is expensive. Even if you get scholarships or any other kind of aid, don't waste money on unnecessary things like partying and eating fast food. Not only will you gain a lot of weight, you will also struggle to pay back loans and pay necessary living expenses. The last and most important advice is to HAVE FUN! You will never be young and have this kind of freedom again in your life!

heather

When I was a high school senior, college still seemed far away in the future. While I always knew I would go, I had just transferred that year to a new high school and was more focused on making friends and trying to do my best in school to really think to much about college. I only applied to a few colleges and those were rather last minute. Also, I had very good academic standing so I had the frame of mind that scholarships would simply find me, instead of looking for them myself. The advice I would tell myself, therefore, would be to really focus on my college options, find one I want to attend the most and the requisites, and do everything within my power to apply for scholarships and not give up on looking. I would tell myself, too, that college is great and it will be one of the most rememorable and rewarding experiences of my life.

If I could go back to talk to myself as a senior in high school, I would tell myself to stay in school,, and that no matter what misfortunes come before me, during my twenties, everything will be just fine. I would tell myself to concentrate on my academics instead of boys because dad will come around to say he loves us and that he's sorry for abandoning us. I would tell myself to be nicer to mom because she will be diagnosed with primary lateral schlorosis and in a wheelchair. I rwould remind myself that no matter what I do, my family would always love me.

Ashley

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior knowing what I now know about college life I would have pushed my self to work harder and try and take college credit courses when possible. Scholarships have become one of the most important things in my carrer as a student besides doing well and graduating. There were so many recources at my disposal that I did not take advantage of that could have helped me apply for more scholarships as well as maybe taking a few college credits over the summer to help furuther my education. So many highschool students are unaware of all the information at their finger tips as high school juniors and seniors. Some are even unaweare of options outside of college. It is important that they take advantage of these resources! I missed out on so much information. We need to aid our future America as much as we can!

Lindsay

The advice that I would give myself is to not worry, don't stress over which choices you should make, and not to be nervous. When I first started applying to colleges I was really worried about which colleges I should apply to, and what would happen if I didn't get accepted anywhere. It is a very stressful experience and if I hadn't started worrying about acceptance letters I think I would have applied to more prestigious colleges instead of taking the safer route. I should'nt have worried because I had good grades, good test scores, and I had a good chance at getting in anywhere that I applied. This affected my choices because I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what kind of colleges to apply to. I also debated a lot about going in state or out of state. I love Colorado and I decided the best thing for me was to stay close to home in the state I grew up in. And last is not to be nervous about starting college. The movies about the mean girls and hazing is'nt true and everyone is really friendly and welcoming.

If I was able to talk with myself one year ago as a high school senior, I would definitely have to give myself a reality check. Back in high school, I graduated with honors and I don't remember it ever being a huge struggle. I didn't buy my college credits when I took college courses. I didn't apply for scholarships as much as I should have. I didn't ever really realize how much college would take from you. Only after I entered college did I realize that it isn't a walk through the park. I ended up having to pay out of MY pocket and take loans because I didn't take the time to apply for scholarships. Now, I fully understand the importance of applying and making the most of myself. Also, it wasn't a piece of cake in my classes either. I had homework every night, and instead of going to the movie night, I was in my room studying. It was definitely a reality check for me; I just wish it had been earlier. Thus, if I could tell myself anything, it would be to take my college career more seriously.

Christina

If I could go back and tell myself what I know now, I would recomend starting your college search early, find money, and get into the work part of college right at the start. If you find a college early the more likely you are to find scholarships and get better deals on school resources. Also, try to find scholarships on your own through companies and clubs. The more free money you have, the less you have to pay back. Finally, start off getting your work done when it is assigned, you have a better chance of remembering it and getting a better grade. Waiting.wont get it done and when you do go to do it, the work may not be as good.

Donyelle

I would probably tell myself to start and find different scholarships and grants so I wouldn't have to pay after I would get out of school. Also figure out what I would want to do for the rest of my life and what kind of job I would want to have.

Joseph

If I could go back in time, I would tell myself to be more outgoing so that I could have more friends at the University. This would have benefited me a lot by being able to call my classmates if I had any questions on the homework given in class. Also, I would say to be prepared for every class by getting enough sleep, study when I have the chance, and just to have fun in every class I take because it will only benefit me in the future.

?Hello,? I stared at my former self. The young boy was listening to music so he didn?t realize that I was their or that I acknowledged, well, myself. ?I said hello, and how are you?? The younger vibrant but still confused past form of my self stood up without a comment. ?Come with me. You look like your not doing well and I know exactly why.? A flood of new memories flew into my mind as I was consumed with mixing with the balance of time. I sat down and began to speak, not letting my past whisper one fragment of a word. All Cam needed to do was listen. ?I am here to tell you that the girl that you are currently dating will dramatically change your life. As she corrupts your mind try to stay cognitive and continue to do well in school you much not let her take hold of all the emotional content she is obviously after. High school is just a small pebble in a world of knowledge that will come afterward. Don?t let all the negative energy devoid of self knowledge.? I stood up and looked began to dissimilate. ?See you soon.?

Kaitlyn

I would tell myself not to listen to dad, don't go to techinal college go to a four year college you know what you want, just go for it and don't let anybody get in your way.

Alexander

Let's see. Hm. I think I would tell myself to PLAN AHEAD! True that plans don't always work out, that's fine, make them flexible. Just plan ahead. A lot of unecessary things have happened because I haven't planed ahead. Writing weekley - or even daily - schedules will save you time, expense and stress. Including homework into this schedule would be wise, you may even end up with extra time! Another thing I would tell myself would be to apply for as many scholarships as possible. You never know when tuition, fees, and other expenses will go up. Better to be safe and taken care of than to go into impossible dept with student loans. Thankfully I haven't had to do this yet, but I know plenty of people who have. Making a lot of friends is also a good idea, you never know who might be able to help you with something.

Derek

I feel that I have made the right decision for my first year of college. to attend a small university in my home yown. Looking back now, I wish I would of studied in High School like I do now. I am more focused and I really enjoy my classes. If I could, I would of applied for scholarships when I was a Junior, I waited until my senior year.

Regina

MAke the most of your time and hard work will bring the most gratification

Tina

College is totally different. Have money saved, do your work and don't procrastonate, make sure you exercise instead of drinking and get plenty of sleep. Eat well and don't starve yourself. Stick with it through the tough times, I swear it will get better. These are the best years of your life, cherish them.

Heather

To learn better studying techniques and remember a lot of the stuff learned in High school because it comes in handy later on. I never thought that I would take chemistry, so I wish I would have remembered a lot more of it.

Kiera

Knowing what I know now I would tell myself to take the ACT more than once. Do more research so that the college I go to meet the needs of my major. I would also advise myself, to either work before I go or try taking my basic /general classes at a Junior college then transfering to the four year college that met my goals. Last I would advise myself to get out of any class that I wasn't connecting with the style of the teacher no matter how much I liked them as a person ; find, talk to some students who had already taken the same course with a different teacher and get there take on the teaching style.

Natalie

I would make sure that I knew it is not as hard as it seems and that I should have picked the first college I wanted to go to instead of settling. I would also tell myself to do better with money that summer so you have more for school. Another thing I would tell myself was to make sure to be super active your freshman year. Being active the first year helps you to make a lot of friends and get in good with the school.

Karisma

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would make sure I went to Colorado State University of Pueblo right out of high school. When I graduated high school in May of 2006, I did not start college until January 2007 and went to a community college. When I decided to go to CSU in August of 2008, not all of my credits were accepted and I was considered a freshman again. Not only would this be advice for myself as a high school senior, but also advice for anyone who would ask and my future children. Starting at a university as soon as one graduates would keep one caught and one would not have to worry about what will transfer and what will not.

Heather

I would give my self the advice is to not be afraid of what is to come in the next few years because you will blink and realize that is all gone again just like it was in high school. Also to not worry about what your going to do with the rest of your life and just worry about what tomorrow will bring. You dont have to worry about what you will be for the rest of your life because you have the rest of your life to figure it out. Life is not something to fear but something to embrace so that things arent missed.

Jane

Apply for as many scholarships as possible in my junior and senior years, volunteer more and stay in school through college while I was younger.

Gracie

Study hard, do well, pay attention and have fun

Cydnee

Find a college that delivers the classes you want at the times you want. Find a school that makes you feel comfortable and at home.

Jishirll

Finding the best college for you or your child can be hard. I would say visiting and talking with the profressors, administration, and other on campus staff helps; but talking to the students that acutally know what it is like to be an athlete, in a club, involved in the school activities or just going there because thats what works is the most important. Students tend to tell you what they go through exactly and if you get enough opinions then you can make the best decision for you.

Mackenzie

Choose a place that you are excited to go to! Don't choose based on your parents wants and needs. It is you who is attending the school and in order to succeed you must love the place in which you are enrolled.

Thomas

Finding the right college is not about where all your friends are going. Sure it is nice to know people before you get there but sticking closing to friends you already know may limit your new friends. So do not be afraid to pick a college that is not what your friends are picking.

Staci

Quality and cost were my two main priorities when I was looking for a college. I chose a college that is close to home and reasonably priced for the education I have received. I also looked for what type of class sizes my college offered. I believe it is hard for students to learn in a class with 200 people in it. Small class sizes are defiantely a good thing when it comes to academic success. School is a place to learn not only in the classroom but also what kind of person you are. The world is full of people who are different from you and I, and finding a school that offers diversity is very important so that students can get first hand experience with people who are different than them. College is place where you discover yourself so come discover Colorado State University in Pueblo, Colorado. It is place where big dreams become reality and friends are made for a lifetime.

Shealynn

Visit the campus and sit in on classes.

Parents and/or students need to know that finding the right college will take deep consideration of the opportunities that the college offers as well as the way in which it fits their personal learning style. For example, I knew that going to a college with large class sizes would not enable me to be comfortable in asking questions and would not allow me to develop a professional relationship with the professors. Therefore, I knew from then that a smaller university was where I needed to begin my search. As far as making the most of the college experience, students need to stay informed by reading and keeping up with various campus resources (i.e. website, newspapers, bulletin boards, etc.). Another great avenue to get the most from college is to join clubs and/or committees. Such groups not only allow the student access to campus activities, but also enable one to develop a great network of friends.

Krista

I would recommend visiting every college you are interested in attending and even ones you are not interested in. You may never know about that one college you did not check out before you except the first exceptence letter you recieved. Leave your mind open to anything.

Sammy-Jo

The best advice I have to students finding a new college is to pick the college that feels right. Not the one all of your friends want to go to, not the one your parents want you to go to, but the one that fits you. If you do not feel like the college is right for you, more than likely it is not and you will have a hard time enjoying college and doing well.

Andrew

For students, figure out what you want to do before you go to college. Plans may change, but this will help you find a college that isn't based on aesthetics. Don't go to colleges because you're liberal, conservative or because you want to become either. Consider your interests and how the campus can satisfy your needs. Some institutions provide opportunities that give you a sense of fulfillment as well as something to put on a resume, and those institutions may not be nationally recognized. Make sure your decision is made with two things in mind: your comfort future. Finding the right college can be easy if you don't consider reputation. For parents, don't support any particular college before your son or daughter decides. Your opinion can sway your child to choose to attend a school that may not fit him or her. Allow your child to decide where to go before you put in your opinion to assure that your student's decision is solely their own. It may or may not be your money going towards the education, but there can be a middle ground between your expectations and the student's personal aspirations.

Shae

If there any advice I can give to parents or students it is to start your search for the right university early. During the junior year I would start looking at colleges you are considering. Most importantly when searching for a college make sure they have programs that will benefit you and fit your career plans. Once accepted into a college and accepting their offer make sure you get to know the faculty and your advisors, after all they are your key to success! In order to make the most out of your experience it is smart to meet new people who can help you in classes, help you get into clubs and programs, and most importantly never lose focus on your goals, dreams, and aspirations. Every indiviual is unique so this may not be what will fulfill every students need to feel that their college experience was the best but this is what has worked for me.

Joseph

Ask current students what they think of the college. They know the best about the college and will most likley give a non-baised view. Visit the colleges and compare what they have to offer. Take care of the financial aid situation before the start of the semester. There are way to many students that are freaked out when they find out the owe the school $4,000 because their financial aid didn't go through. Do not pick a college based on where friends are going. Statistically, students do not keep their same friends in college. Find a college that is involved with students!

krystal

To research each college that you have selected and see what the differences are and if it suits your needs to succeed.
