What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Jennifer

I wish I had known at the beiginning of this survey that it ended 3 months ago.

Paul

Get you 4 year degree now

Angela

Don't put off going to college no matter your upcoming trials and tribulations. Continue to work hard and always stay in school to continue equipping you with skills and education to further your career and family lifestyle.

FLoyd

Stay in school. Dont let 25 years go by and chase a dream that might not come true. Dont date ugly women and marry for money. Always believe in yourself and never give up. You can achieve more that what people think you can but you have to work hard and ask questions along the way.

Linda

The advice I would give myself is to continue your education and get your degree. It has been taunting me for years to go back to school and get my accounting degree, but I thought working was more important. I worked two jobs for over 30 years, raise my daughter alone. I have wanted to go back to school but chose to work instead. If I could go back I would have enrolled in college and got my degree years ago. My dream is to be a CPA, now I have my Associates and plan to continue for my Bachelor's and on to get my CPA.

Brandon

Dear self: I'm writing this note two years after you've read it. I am a college sophomore, and you’re a high school senior. Soon enough you’ll decide you want to pursue computer animation as a path of study. That’s something you’ve always been interested in, right? It’s a very interesting field, and I developed a great appreciation for it. However, that is where the difference between YOU and ME comes in. At this moment in your life, you’re involved with the school plays. You love doing theatre more than anything, but you know that animating at a technical college is where you belong. At this moment in my present—your future—I am no longer at the same school as where I started. I no longer spend hours on tedious computer work. Allow me to let you in on a little secret: you changed your mind. You have discovered that you were meant for the stage. The “theatre bug” has bitten hard. So before you make too quick of a decision, think about what you love to do, because you’ll want to spend your life doing it. Choose carefully, my friend.

Lencola

The most important advice I can give my younger self is to always focus on my school work. Every grade that you earn in high school matters to shape your college education. Also it would have been benefical for me to have taken more college courses and more advance classes. To prepare myself to become a more driven college student and graduate sooner with high honors. To always be prepared for the unexcepted and that work ethic and dedication will always will be a wonderful asset to have to suceed through all obstacles that may be unforseen to the eye of the beholder. You can acheive anything that you put your mind to through prayer, understanding and excepational study habits. Remember that time waits for no one and always try your best to master the mind of the unknow.

Tatiana

Dear younger self, Your second year of college is almost complete. You transfer next fall. It's one of the scariest feelings. It's also one of the most beautiful. You have completed something and are on a path to greatness. Be proud. But here's what you should know: You're only human. You will get your first art history exam back. It will be a "B". Get over it. No, seriously. Let it go. Embrace your mistakes and come to the realization that what will matter will matter, and you are still breathing. So it's not that big a deal. Take the classes you need, but also take the classes you love. By this time, you can speak french adequatly. Don't hesitate to register for that class. It's one of the best things you have ever put yourself through. It's hard, but worth it. Love college life. Love climbing the steep stairs to the top of the hill twice a week. Love the lack of sleep and the late night donut runs. Love the homework. These are the kinds of things that make college life great. Dont you dare forget. Sincerely, your older self.

William

I would have advised myself to continue my education immediately. I got my GED in high school and didn't really attend school for another 3 years. I enrolled in a community college and still didn't give it my all. 11 years later I am enrolled in Colorado Technical University and I wish I had continued my education from the moment I received my GED.

anna

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would have told myself to concentrate more on my homework and maybe not so much time on what people thought of me. I would have also mentioned that saving money to use for college would have been a lot better then always going out to eat fast food or buying clothes. At that time I actually had no interest in attending college and after taking care of my grandparents while in high school and working dead end jobs for 2 years after, I realized how important it is to continue an education. If I could say any one thing to my high school senior self, it would be, "Think about your future and your past. You wouldn't want your future children to go through the struggles that you did. So prepare yourself for college and know that even though it may be stressful and difficult, the future is bright and rewarding.

Jacob

Don't bother joining the Navy! It's great for some people, but not so much for you. Go straight for college, and never stop learning.

Lisa

Don't stop, complete your degree! Study!

Sereena

The advice i would give myself is to stay focused and do not let anything come in the way of my success. Take all the opprotunities and information possible whether it be field trips to many different colleges or applying for scholarships with the help of teachers. Listen to what people say about college because they actually know what they are talking about. Especially all of the teachers and administration. Do not let your friends influence you in any way, whether they be faults or positive sitiuations, because your friends are not always going to be there and all of your actions with determine your future. Now that i have taken a half a year off and I have absolutely no extra money to pay for college, it is a lot more difficult to get back into school. Although I do not regret anything of my past, I do still dwell on the poor decisions I've made on not starting college right away. It is ten times more difficult, and now, I am doing it all on my own with the guidence of my own eyes. It is never too late to go to college, but the simplicity changes.

Melany

The best advice I can think of, is to GO TO COLLEGE! Then, if you do go to college, finish it while you are there. I finished high school and started college full time, but decided to work instead, mistake. I should have finished college and gotten my degree. I spent 6yrs part time to finish my Associate's Degree in Business Administration. I would have told myself to stay in school for Nursing and have job security for a lifetime! Instead I chose the business path. But in retrospect, it all worked out. I became a paramedic and loved the work I did, and now hope to help run some type of health care organization upon completing my Bachelors in Health Care Administration, with hopes to get my masters. You know, looking back, I don't think I would have changed anything! I love my life where it is and wouldn't be here today if I hadn't made the choice's I did, so I don't have any advice to my high school self, except enjoy life wherever it may lead, it was the path made just for you!

Thomas

I would tell myself to enroll in Running Start, which is a program that enables highschool students to take college courses. This allows a student to aquire their highschool diploma and achieve college credits at the same time.

Henry

Never give up, always keep your focus on the goal that you have set for yourself, and stay determined. Vow to not let anything or anyone deter you from your goals.

Patrina

The advice I would give myself is to seek many scholarships & bursaies that applies to you. I also tell myself to talk to other college students and ask about what things to be prepared for when entering college for the first time.

Ginger

Ginger, you need to open up your mind to the future and listen to what those around you are saying. As you grow and change, so will the world around you. It could be that today you may not need a college degree to build a career but tomororw the world will change around you. You have to stay ahead of the curve Ginger, or you will find yourself behind in life. While you may not realize what today has to offer you may feel the pressure of what you missed later in life. Move forward today and your dreams wil be realized.

Carol

Working hard for my 4.0 GPA has made me a more confident person. Taking care of a disabled husband, a child, working full time, and going to school full time has forced me to make sacrifices unthought-of before. This has made me stronger and more able to control my future. I have learned a great deal toward an IT degree and am sure that I am capable of working in upper level management in this field. CTU has empowered me with the curriculum necessary in my field to succeed. I have grown into a self-assured, vibrant person able to take on the world.

Amy

My college experience has provided me the begining of a new life. I have epilepsy, which has made it next to impossible to obtain a degree. I have always wanted to go to law school; however, felt I would never be able to achieve such a dream. Attending CTUO gave me the opportunity to succeed at my educational goals, inspite of my health condition.

amanda

I believe that the most valuable part of my college experience was learning about new cultures and schools of thought. I believe that the deeper understanding of human nature, social conditions and cultures, and my own personal limitations gave me the basis for accomplishing things I initially believed were beyond my reach. My college experience taught me that every individual can make a difference, for better or for worse, and that choosing not to participate is still a conscious decision. Social development and betterment is everyone’s' responsibility, and investing in your community builds a more cohesive and functional society. The social issues we face today do not necessarily affect everyone at this point, but failure to act on them as a society will eventually lead to a polarization of socio-economic classes. Higher education is a huge part of empowering individuals to take action, not only to change their circumstances but also to get involved in bigger issues by investing in their communities. Invested individuals are empowered individuals and are the glue that hold neighborhoods, communities and societies together. They fight ignorance and intolerance and serve as examples and role models to future generations.

cathy

Well I have to say that since I have been going to school on line I foun d that I enjoy the online experience, it gives me the statifaction that I can complete an assignment and that once I have completed it I know that I did a good job and I am proud of what I have accomplished. In going to school online I found that I have met many different people and they have taught me different ways of thinking about a question or a project that we were working on in class, Each person had a different way of taking that question and giving an answer that best fit the question at hand. Learning from different people and there wayts of thinking has broaded my horizion on learning and I hope that I will be able to continue in the future so that I can have the goal that I have set out to achive for me and my family. Colorado Technical University Online is one of the best schools that I have atttended that I have learned a great deal from them and I hope that I can in the furtue. Online schooling is excellent

james

I'm starting next week so I cant answer that.

Katlin

Starting college was a big step for me to accomplish my dreams of owning a spa. Fortunately I have an amazing advisor to assist me thru the process. CTU has been valuable to attend because the online school helps me have a balanced life as I earn my business degree. As I move on through the courses assigned to me, I will be better educated and the value of a better education is priceless. After I graduate from the university my income will raise and I will be that much closer to making my dreams a reality.

Linda

Valuable experience is exactly what I have received from attending college. I have waited for twenty years to go back and finish up my bachelors degree. I am fifty four years old and I had to quit my job to go back. My husband is the sole provider now. I have learned more about economics and I thought I had a great grasp in this field. Business systems and the essentials of orgainzational behaviors. I had no idea these kinds of learning classes were available and how important they are to management and companies. Learning is so important to me as well as the degree to go with it. I am looking for a degree that can take me anywhere and Accounting is something I think will be my answer. With todays job market one has a choice but to attend school to make oneself valuable and desireable in the market. But on the selfish side of the answer: I just wanted to go back to school for myself before I started collecting Social Security. I wanted to be able to say I have a Bachelors degree.

matthew

I have gotten a great deal of knowledge. Made a great deal of friends. Being a shy person, being around people of the same feather really does help to learn and grow in todays world. How to become a team leader when I didn't think I had it in me. It taught me how to study and really get the job done. If I failed I was able to talk to a teacher or just keep working on the problem till I found a solution. I may not be the best student ever but I love to meet new people solve problems and help them solved their problems too.

Laura

I am a returning student after 23 years. And what I have discovered is that the information from the classes I had taken previously were never lost. I have integrated everything I have learned into my career and into writing books. And now that I am ready to take my career to the next level, I see how important it is to have an education and to act on it. Without a foundation from education, there is a cap on what I can achieve and the impact I can make in the world. My college experience has given me a foundation for my life from many different perspectives, historically, mathmatically, philosophically, psychologically and given me models for creating systems and structures that will support long term success. My experience of learning is so different now, because rather than just trying to get a paper saying that I have completed something that my parents wanted me to do, I am going to school for myself, for the thirst of knowledge and how I can utilize what I have learned to benefit others.

Jessica

It has taken me 27 years to complete my bachelors degree. With the detours that life threw my way as well as starting a family, completing my degree took a backseat. When my children became self-sufficient, I returned and finished my bachelors degree in March of 2010. Now, I am moving forward at Colorado Tech University with an online Masters program beginning in August of 2010. My educational experience has been a long and bumpy one, but the important thing is is that I finished. I am looking forward to completing my Masters in the the field of criminal justice, a field that I have worked in most of my adult life to better my skills, knowledge and salary. I want to show my children that no matter what life throws your way, you should always finish what you start and do not let anyone or anything stand in the way of your dreams and goals.

Reginna

By going back to school as an older person has been very rewarding. I did not believe in myself when I was younger and my parents never talked to me about going to college. I learned at later years in my life that a good educaction was very important in life. This school has made it easy and they were very helpful in me getting started in college at my age. The value of my education will last a life time and will reward me for as long as I live and then some due to me being able to talk to my sons about how important a good education is to being happy and successful.

Tamara

I actually start classes in two days. I did just complete the schools workshop. I did get alot of useful imformation for using the schools website over my course of study. Since I'm just starting I 'll express what I hope to get out of my college experience. I am a single mom that just got out of an abusive relationship. I feel that this is a new start for me. I am currently a cashier and am wanting to get out of the "dead end job". I didn't graduate High School. I do have my GED. I don't want my daughter saying in a few years,"You quit school . Why can't I ?" I want her to know how important an education is. So, in close, I hope to not only gain the skills to shine in the Health Care field , but to reach some personal goals. Thankyou for your consideration.

Pearl

I have gotten the chance to start over again. My high school years were turbulent and my grades were at an all time low. But thanks to colleges and univesities, I have been given a clean slate. I am trying my best to maintain my grades and achieve a secure employment once I graduate. I have proven to not only others, but to myself how self-discipline and determination can be paid off.

Jessica

BAM! Flash back in time to my senior year, which was not that long ago. Peaking around the corner I see my year younger self and pull her aside. I would tell myself, ?Work harder.? I know that sounds so generic, but it?s so true. I worked so hard, but I should have pushed harder. Reason being I?m realizing now that if I would have worked harder to be my schools valedictorian, studied harder for my ACT?s, or even took the initiative to do my SAT?s things could have been different. Now that I?m in college I?m looking for ways to pay for it, and after doing some extreme Googling I have read that there is schools that will give you free ride if you?re the top of your class! After doing some more research I realize that once I change my degree to pharmaceutical I will owe around 200,000 dollars in college debt. So younger self work harder so you can get a free ride to college that way you can focus on school and not on the massive amount of debt your building.

Carol

First of all, I'd like to say that after you graduate from high school, you feel overwhelmed and excited that you are finally finished with school!

Pamela

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, know what I know now about college life and making the transition, I would tell myself to decide what I want to do before continuing on to college. It takes too long and too much time to go and be undecided about what I want to do. Once you start a family, too, it gets more difficult to finish. Once you start, stay with it until you are done.

Victoria

College life is better than high school because your fellow students are serious about their education and not there to just have fun. Being a college student requiers a great deal of studying and research; however, with technology advancing the way it is research is easier done and actually a lot pleasurable to do. Not getting a degree will lead you down the path of flipping burgers, which is hard on your body. I would rather have a career that keeps my brain moving and not falling asleep.

Bill

If I could go back to when I was in high school, I?d have a lot to say to myself. I would have to say that first off, college really is not all about how much fun you can have. If you look, you will always find something that is more fun then class, more rewarding then that paper that is due. You think that you know everything now, just because high school was so easy, you?ll have no problems sweet talking the prof to let that week late lab report still get full credit. Just don?t sweat any of that small stuff, because you know it all. I mean why really even go to college? When it is all done and over, it is that piece of paper that does open those doors. Don?t take half your adult life to finally get it right.

Tori

I would tell myself to never give up on whatever you set out to achieve in life. Don't let no one tell you that you can't excel in nothing. Believe that with the lord's help you can do whatever the lord blesses you to be able to do. Things will happen along the way that may try to throw you off course, but just stay focused on what you set out to do and you can make it as long as you never give up. Trust God and always keep him first in your life and he will lead and guide you in what youn should do in your life. Focus always on whats important in your life and always keep that in mind. Stay rooted and grounded in God and always trust and believe in God no matter what. Remember always that God always have your best interest at heart.

Sabrina

If I were able to go back in time my advice would be to contribute more time my studies rather than hanging out in the arcade. Research college programs for seniors in high school to get a jump start on your college education. Avoid credit card offers at all cost. Save money whenever you can and stay away from junk food. Leave the partying for some other time and stick to your studies. Understand the career goals you have in mind and stick it. The most important advice I can give is get some sleep and never drop out, whatever the reason, never leave. See your college education through to the end and then go back for your Master's. If finances are an issue, find employment to finance your education while still going to school.

karol

To stay in school and think about your future and what you want to do with it. Education is a good experience and it is best to start college while you are young instead of waiting until your 60 years old like I am doing.

William

First, I would have tell myself to straighten up and decide what I wanted to do with my life, because it's not easy out there in the world. The choices I made were not conducive to my abilities or what I wanted out of life. Second, I would explain that college isn't as bad as I think. That I need to prioritize what I should do and not what I wanted to do. A college education is more vital to my future than I could imagine. That without this education I can only go so far in life before I run into road blocks. So take some time, research some schools and get with the program of self -improvement and higher education. Become an effective and efficient member of society.

krystal

Krystal the road to sucess will be extremely hard without a proper education. You may want to have fun and party now but life will soon set in. When you graduate go to college immediatley. You will still have time to have all the fun you can. Once you have your degree and have a career everything will fall into place. You will be able to own things and start a family. Things you will not be able to do without money. The econonmy will one day take a turn for the worst, and you don't want to be stuck anywhere. you need to go ahead and stabilize yourself now. Some people say don't put off tomorrow what you can do today. If you don't make the right choices now you wil find yourself in a rut in your future.

DeAnna

Dear DeAnna, It is time to move again. No, not to another foster family, out on your own now, off to your first year of college. You made it girl, now keep going. I thought I would give you some advice on what to pack. There is no need to over pack . Take what you need, what will be of most use to you. Here is my list for you: 1. Pereserverence - you've overcome obstacles before, keep believing in yourself at school. 2. Pack all the good things you've learned from all the wonderful people you've met along the way. Anything negative needs left behind. It's too heavy and ugly. You'll need the room for your determination. 3. Your heart - I know it's big but it's also very usefull. There might be others who will need you to share. 4. Pack your dreams, they will keep you working toward goals and any future ambitions you may have. I know you will do well. I believe in you. There are a lot of people out there that love you, but remember, I was the first.

Nathan

If I could go back and talk to myself as a senior I would of told myself to focus on the future. Too often we get caught up in our daily grind and we forget to look ahead at goals we have set. Each day we step forward in life our past becomes longer and opportunties are missed. Maybe this is knowledge only gained with experience but the future is not as short sighted as it seemed in high school.

MARGIE

I would say Margie, let's get motivated this is the biggest opportunity of your life and there are so many great colleges out there waiting for me to explore and get an education. Education is a terrible thing to wait on and to put on the back burner. Learn all you can and play later and take trips and long vacations later in life. College is something you need to pursue now and tell all of my friends to get started and get focused because we are the future and we can make a difference in the world. Here in America we have a chance and with an education we can travel to some of the finest countries in the world to follow our dreams. Friends you will meet along the way but lets not forget to aim for a degree and not get lost with friends staying out late and drinking your semester away, make the grades, make a difference and become the best at what you choose in life and teach others to strive and stay focused and get motivated and get high off of college life and feed your brain with some of the best knowledge.

Ashley

If I could go back to myself in high school and know what I know now; I would tell myself to buckle down and got to college after high school. You have to grade and you need to do something good with your life. It is very hard to return to college after you have been out of high school for a few years.

Lenda

The best advice would be that if you or worried about fitting into college life that today college life comes in different ways to educate you. If can be on-site campus or online campus experience. Not all people can handle the load of on site campus studies due to other life committements, but there are educational advisor who can help find the best way for you to continue with your education and fit it to your current life schedule where everyone wins.

Brenda

Take your classes seriously and do not procracinate. Take good notes and study. Become organized so that you can get your assignment done and handed in on time. Grades are important no matter what the class is, so try to get the best grades you can get. All classes are important because it prepares you for college and what it entailes, so do not take high school for granted.

Johanna

The advise I would give myself would be to put the hard work into college right out of high school. Life goes by so fast and there are so many things that you have to worry about as an adult and having a good and stable career in place already would help you in so many aspects of your adult life.

Sandra

Stay focused and realize that the choices you make in the next few years will affect the rest of your life. You are determining not only your financial future, but whether or not you will enjoy what you do to make a living. A very wise man once said,'Find something you like doing, figure out how to make money at it and you'll never work another day in your life.' You may only have one shot at this, don't blow it. As for your financial future, I can only say too words about the financial struggles you will face without an education or some type of training....IT SUCKS!

Kelsie

Get to college as soon as possible, and instead of the associates degree, I would have considered the bachelors degree so that I could have graduated when the economy got better instead of graduating at it's worst.
