Cornell University Top Questions

What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Erin

Activities are fun, and when compared to other ivy league institutions it has an active social life.

michelle

There are so many organizations on campus that it is hard to say which is the most popular. Whatever a student wants to get involved in, they can generally find it here. In the dorms, residents always leave their doors open, and I met my closest friends just by walking down my hall.

Josh

Lots to do besides drink, but many people take it too far.

Katie

There is lots to do on campus, no matter what your interests.

Matt

The greek system tends to dominate the night life, however there are a plenitude of campus sponsored concerts, speakers, and events.

Kate

There is ALWAYS something to do around campus. Every week there are a variety of bands to see, a handful of fraternity parties, an uncountable number of club events, dance or theater shows, a capella concerts and sporting events to go to. Cornell Cinema offers at least two movies per day for only a few dollars. People party all the time, but there are tons of other things to do that don't involve alcohol.

Andy

greek life is HUGE yes, my dorm is very social i met the majority of my closest friends on my floor if i am awake late on a weeknight, i am doing homework hockey games are big on the social scene people party on average, two times a week

Sarah

I'm involved in Cornell Bigs, which is a subset of Big Brother, Big Sister. The organization of the club is not good. I enjoy being able to help though. I met my closest friends from my dorm. My floor is extremely social. Most of our floor gets along and we hang out together. I live in an all-girl dorm. Therefore, I have not been able to meet many boys. I wish there was a better way to meet boys. Frat parties are not a good way to meet quality boys. I go to sleep early. On a Saturday, you can go to frat parties, go to the movies, play games in your dorm, or do some stupid activity that Cornell has come up with. The options are not good.

Julie

The most popular organizations on campus is the Greek life. They are very popular because of social reasons and long term friendships.

Kelly

There are tons of frats and there is always a party to go to on the weekends. Slope Day is the biggest party ever - drinking and music on the slope.

Jessie

The most popular team on campus is, i think, the male ice hockey team. I am invovled with Up 'til Dawn, Association of Students of Color, Cornell Alumni-Students Mentoring Program, PATCH, Cornell Health International, and Cornell Global Development Club. In my dorm, espcially on my floor, a lot of people leave their doors open because I have a very social floor.Athletic events, especially cornell ice hockey, are very popular. I think guest speakers are pretty popular, too, if they are popular to the general public. I don't think the teater is that popular at cornell. I met my closest friends from pre-orientation program (POST) and also from my floor in my dorm. I am always awake at 2am, doing work/studying. People party a lot, if they are greek system, but for people who are not tend to go party once in a while, after pre-lims. Greek sytems are pretty important at cornell, as it definitely affects the social life, but I don't kow how important it is in terms of academics. I worked a lot last weekend. I can go for a movie, go shopping, or wacth movie with my friends in my dorm on saturday night without drinking. I go shopping off campus.

Jordan

Greek life is a huge deal at Cornell. Around 30{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the population is Greek, but it feels like a lot more. Being in a sorority is very fun. There are always parties to go to, and by joining a house, you make connections with hundred of new people. In addition, it gives you a place to stay your sophomore year.

Brian

Social life depends largely on where you are on campus. Engineers tend to be entrenched in their rooms working hard on their courses. Many athletic events are important, most notably hockey.

Phoneix

Fraternities are the only means of nightlife at Cornell due to the extremely rigid and excessive rules about noise in dorms. Cornell tries to hold many "alternative" activities to do on weekends, but they are normally quite unsuccessful.

Bethany

I met some of my closest friends through the dairy program, my sorority, and my club gymnastics team. What I like about sororities is that you find a tight knit group of people that you can always count on. Some of my favorite days during the school year are when I am walking around campus and I see some of my sorority sisters, some of my dairy friends, and some of my teammates. Surprisingly enough, there are days where I will see someone I know everywhere I go. The three clubs that I am involved in have made this campus seem so small. It is very comforting walking somewhere and seeing a familiar face especially during my freshman year. When I do not go out with my sorority, I find time to hang out with my teammates, or just hang out with some of my sorority sisters that happen to be staying in. My favorite night staying in this semester was going out to eat, doing a little work (but not really), making a salsa dip, and than watching the cutest movie. Sometimes you have to be creative to try to find something to do when you do not feel like going to a party but those can be some of the best nights.

Cornell

The frat parties are definitely well-attended every weekend. Hanging out with large groups of people without alcohol can prove to be difficult, but it is done by more people than one might think.

Sarah

Greek life is very strong here, and the most popular thing to do on a weekend is go to a fraternity party. There are about 4 bars in collegetown, and everyone only goes to one of them (The Palms), but it's a lot of fun and you can forget a purse on a table and go back the next day and get it with everything still in it.

Charlie

I currently live in a very anti-social dorm, so no, people do not leave their doors open here. When I visit my friends in other dorms, things are a lot more social and people interact with their hall mates a lot more. I met my closest friends through rushing my sorority. In this process I was able to find a group that I really fit with and could better understand what my friends were interested in. People party a lot here, and I feel like the fraternity/sorority scene is a major factor in this. These parties make up my weekend, and people who are not a part of Greek life often feel this way too.

KC

Athletic events involving the hockey team is very popular. Some dorms are more social than others.

Rose

I live off-campus, so I do a lot on the Commons. Some of the guest speakers have been amazing - I saw Sandra Day O'Connor, John Ashcroft, Mike Huckabee... I'm very active in the marching and pep bands, so I see a lot of athletic events, the music departments here are pretty good too.

Tristan

EVERYONE DRINKS!!

Christina

I'm the Outreach Coordinator of the Sustainability Hub, which is a really great environmental group on campus. This year I've been working with them on a campaign to raise awareness about how unsustainable bottled water is. My closest friends are my roomates - I live in a townhouse, with three other girls. None of us knew each other beforehand, but we are all pretty much best friends now. We definetely have lots of speakers come, but unless they're a big name, its hard to get people to come becuase there are so many different speakers, a big deal is not made and most people don't know about it. Its very easy to party a lot here - you could find a party every night, except probably during vacations/exam weeks.

Fred

There is ALWAYS something to do around campus, as the plethora of student groups on campus are always holding meetings or events that attract many people. First, people like to make friends, which usually occurs in dorms. In my smaller dorm, people felt comfortable leaving their room door open, regardless of their presence in the room. Second, people venture outside their dorms to participate in activities suited for their interested, which often forms another circle of friends. This may be where students spend the majority of their time and social life, as it may be sports, interest groups, frats/sororities, and the list goes on. Oh, and parties, frats are always throwing parties. Go parties!

Ally

There are always activities going on. As for sporting events- hockey is huge, along with basketball and lacrosse. We have great guest speakers, from comedians to political figures, and amazing concerts! About a third of the campus is involved in Greek life, but that dominates social life even for those not in a house at least freshman & sophomore year. The seniors and juniors go to the bars in collegetown.

Catherine

Greek life is very unique at Cornell. As far as the Panhellenic Sororities there is no hazing. Greek Life is a great way to meet people, and pretty much the only way to party at cornell; especially your freshman year until people get apartments in college town, or go to the bars, but let's be honest, who wants to pay for alcohol when you could get it free at a Frat. Also, No, greek life isn't for everyone. But everyone should seriously rush. If you don't you will most likely regret it. At least give it a try. There is a sorority or Fraternity for every type of person.

Stefanie

The greek system is definitely the ultimate social "group" on campus. Since 1/3 of students are a part of this group, they have a strong influence on the student body. Cornell also has many traditions, some of which are more celebrated than others (SLOPE DAY).

Joe

Some students at cornell seem to have no social life and just study all the time. others party constantly. there are some p eople in the middle. the greek scene is the most social and is very important for making friends and meeting people. most students seem uninterested in music/dance/theater groups, except a capella. athletes are well regarded, but for most sports, the student body doesn't really care how well they do.

Sarah

There are always social groups, and activities going on around campus! The social life is amazing as well always parties always a good time out there to be had.

Brett

Greek life is definitely a major part of Cornell's social life. Without them, there would be no parties, and I would say that most students here go out at least once a week. Even though partying is not good for one's health, students see it as a way to de-stress and forget their studies for a night. In general Cornell is a very nice place. All the people are friendly and it's not hard to make friends or get involved. There is a club for every possible thing.

Morgan

It's like pulling teeth to get people to come to my a cappella concerts... but maybe we just aren't that good? Too bad I spend so much fucking time working to make our sound perfect and people just blow us off, not even caring.

colin

hockey is by far our biggest sport and the games are intense. we also have a kickass inter mural waterpolo team. You cant throw a rock out here without hitting an acapella group. We also have a good theater department and an amazing list of guest speakers which include John Stewart, Steven Colbert, Bill Nye, Janet Reno, Salman Rushdie, Mary Robbinson (ex-president of Ireland), Sandra Day Oconnor, Maya Angelou, and john Cleese.

Ashley

The social life can be lacking at times, especially since bars close at 1 am in the morning. Frat parties, however, are often raging until the late hours of the morning and can be really fun. Greek life is incredibly important at Cornell. Essentially, you cannot have a life if you're not in a sorority/fraternity, most people find this out the hard way, after trying to crash numerous greek only events.

Aviva

social life is centered around greek life for the most part. everything involves drinking.

Sarah

I think that a lot of the social life on campus is dominated by Greek life. I think there are positive and negative aspects to this. I think one thing it does is help people become socially involved and make friends, but it also excludes people who are not involved in Greek life. I really do wish there were less frats on campus because I don't think they add many positive things to Cornell.

Alice

Acapella is pretty big on campus. Some freshmen dorms are more social than others. For example, I hear in Donlon, students leave their doors open all the time. I don't think athletic events are very popular especially for sports like tennis, swimming, soccer, etc. If I'm awake at 2 am on a Tuesday, I'm probably studying in my room or at hte library. People party every Friday.

Joelle

The a cappella groups are extremely popular and the hockey team, of course, is adored by all. Frat parties are huge from Thursday night to Saturday night, but there is also other things going on like plays and concerts and speakers, which get a considerable turnout, too. In my dorm, students leave their doors open and I think it is a great way to meet people, especially since the schoo is so big and you may feel overhwelmed at the beginning. I met all of my friends first semester through my dorm and I've meet my other friends through my sorority, which I love.

Rachel

the greek system is incredibly involved in. its a very tight-knit community cornell hockey, basketball, and lacrosse attract very high attendance and athletes are a very big presence students tend to leave their dorms open when they are in the building people party thursday-saturday night last weekend FIJI had their big FIJI Island party (day and night) and it was incredble, completely packed, excellent music greek life is veryyyyy important on cornell's campus with over 40 frats and 12 sororities

Ally

sororities and fraternities are prevalent and you hear a lot about them a lot of people like to get drunk at frat parties and hook up met closest friends through dorm and sorority and classes if i was awake at 2am on a tuesday i would probably be doing work always parties going on friday and saturday nights, some people party a lot more than that, a lot of people ddont party at all

Melanie

I love my sorority, but sometimes I wish that there was less of a Greek life presence on campus, because especially freshman and sophomore years, it pretty much dominates the social scene. Sports teams are definitely very popular and events are fun, but I'm sure they're not as fun as at a big ten school.

alex

lots of drinking, but also a million other things from sports and music to DDR and anime

Jeff

Fraternities are pretty huge at Cornell. I don't know what I would do if I didn't have a fraternity to hang out at. Overall I would say this is a pretty antisocial school. There are a lot of people that like to sit in their rooms or study. People I know usually only party on the weekends, but I think certain majors with less work party more often. Fraternities are key for partying. RAs are too much of a pain in the ass to party in the dorms. I wouldn't want to consider spending a weekend without drinking. It's what people do here if they are not studying. That is the way Cornell works: Working or Drinking. I don't know much else about the social scene. I tend to stick to my room playing computer games. I live with 5 people that are pretty social, but even they are in their rooms most nights studying. I don't go off campus because it requires walking up hills that would tire a Sherpa.

Bevan

Greek life is HUGE. Students in freshman dorms leave their doors open to meet new people. Some athletic events are popular--lacrosse, hockey and homecoming game. Awake at 2 AM on a Tuesday--either studying or relaxing with friends. People party at different times--mostly when there isn't too much work to do.

Ashley

join a club sport, a club, greek life, join something!!! North campus is really great, its where all the freshman live, you get to meet everyone really quickly and there is always a familiar face around. greek life is pretty big, between 30 and 40{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of all students are involved. there is a house for everyone.

Liz

greek life is really big, a really good social network, can be really stereotypical and catty at times though. lots of couples on campus, also lots of random casual hook ups. lots of partying, always something to do all the time on campus, collegetown and ithaca are nice outlets to the campus

Sarah

I am part of a club called Colleges Against Cancer, which holds events throughout the year in order to make the Cornell campus aware of various methods of cancer prevention and exams that can be done in order to make sure you are living a healthy life. In collaboration with Ithaca College's Colleges Against Cancer, we organize a 12 hour Relay for Life, which involves participants walking and running around a track in order to raise money for the American Cancer Society. At the event, there are various fundraisers and entertainment. This past year, we have raised over $220,000.

Josh

Social life is great. Frat parties and house parties every thursday through saturday.

Dana

All sports teams are good. Hockey is HUGE! I'm on the crew team and love it. I am also part of a sorority. Greek life is big but not mandatory or too big. If you want to go to a party, you always can...if you want to stay in and watch a movie, you can always find someone to do it with you.

Rosie

Lots of different scenes on campus. On any given Friday, there's at least 5 frat parties, 10 bars in Collegetown in Ithaca, 3 cultural events, 28 house parties, and an acapella concert. Pick and choose. There's a ton of clubs... The best thing is to pick one or two and get really involved.

Julia

Greek life is pretty large--with 40-something frats and 12 sororities, it makes up a big part of social life on campus. This is great--always parties to go to and free drinks. Many frats don't fit the direct "frat stereotype" because there are so many on campus, so it's pretty easy to find people you're comfortable with. There are also a lot of great programs on campus if you don't like drinking: skate nights, movie nights, free food, and many other events are always available.

Erica

Greek life is very prominent. My best friend from high school and I both came here -- I joined the greek system and she did not. We still see each other regularly. She's a dance major so the dance dept is like her sorority. If you find your niche, you do not need to join a house. For boys it makes your social scene a lot bigger, for girls it doesnt matter whether or not you join. There are always lectures, club activities and events, and other things going on. No matter what time it is you can find something to do. Last Saturday I went to a break dance concert, rented bikes and biked around Cayuga Lake, went to a frat party, went to a brunch downtown, went to a philanthropy soccer tournament etc. There are so many different things to do all the time.
