Cornell University Top Questions

What is the stereotype of students at your school?

Rose

Premeds are generally assholes. They're the ones who walk out of tests and pull it apart, I hate being around them - they look down on everyone else. And you know they're only in medicine to earn a ton of money, they don't care about people. Greek life is too big here, and you can tell which girls are in sororities. Frats can vary, there are some decent frats and there are definitely decent people in frats or sororities. But "sorostitute" fits a LOT of the girls here. Hotelie girls are almost always sorostitutes, and very easy to tell apart from normal people. Hotelie guys are generally OK, though.

Tristan

They are depressed and have ugly girls.

Christina

That we are really stressed, that we are the easiest Ivy to get into, that a C can be considered a good (meidan) grade here but thats depressing for a lot of people who are used to A's all the time, that we party really hard

Stereotypes: Cornell students are nerdy, not very attractive, spend a lot of time working and in the library. There are a lot of Asians. They have a bad sense of style.

Erica

really competitive, suicidal, work hard play hard, Long Island

Ryan

Typical Ivy League stereotypes - rich, self-interested, stuck-up

Rebecca

I think one of the biggest stereotypes is that everyone at Cornell comes from New York (especially Long Island). Also, people tend to peg us as the "dumb Ivy".

Christine

We are a party school because of the predominant Greek life present on campus, we have a high suicide rate, we are the "easiest Ivy to get into, the hardest one to get out of"/

Kevin

Some stereotypes are engineers are super intelligent and dedicated to their work and also are very nerdy. Cornell has a large Asian population. Most students went to Cornell because they did not get accepted to the other Ivies. It rains every day in Ithaca. Cornell has no pretty girls. The life of a Cornellian is having their heads stuck in books studying all day.

carolyn

smart, nerdy, don't really go out or have fun, awkward kids

Alex

There's the common quote "Easy to get in, hard to get out." That is it's the "safety" for a lot of students who apply to all of the other Ivy Leagues, but after being accepted it's the hardest to graduate from. Students aren't necessarily smart but hard working.

Samantha

Study so much that they do not have any fun. Ithaca is a dark and gloomy city the entire year.

Zoe

that we are all "dorky" and depressed and have no fun and just work all the time.

Cathy

Some stereotypes about Cornell is that it is one of the easiest Ivy League schools to get in to. Yes, it is easy to get in to, but Cornell offers one of the most rigorous academics out of the Ivy League schools. Grades are NOT inflated here. You have to work hard to earn your grades. I'm sure people assume that, as an Ivy league school, the students are boring and just work in the library 24 hours/ 7 days a week. However, Cornellians work hard, but they also play hard to. The Greek Life is one of the biggest groups here.

Casey

We're always working, the weather sucks (Ithaca is COLLLLD)

Sarah

really intense, cutthroat. lots of suicides..

Jordan

They work so hard they throw themselves in the gorges, or they are so obsessed with grades they rip pages out of their classmates' textbooks.

Quinn

All depressed, all wealthy, all from NY, all Jewish

Will

We're all geniuses and we're all stuck up rich kids.

Kara

Pretentious, proactive, hardworking, work hard play hard, change the world

Andy

That the Cornell campus is full of bridges that Cornell students all use to kill themselves.

Dan

Nerdiness is a big perceived trait, I think - and it can be true. Everyone's a bit nerdy, but that doesn't mean anything negative here, I don't believe; it's just a part of a lot of people's personalities because it's a pretty intellectual setting. But most people you talk to have pretty diverse interests and a lot of great things to offer...there are bookish types but they tend to be incredibly motivated and the kind that will someday make millions from coding software. There's also a generalization that here, as at any private school (particularly Ivies), you'd have a lot of pretentious rich kids.

Alex

Engineers and architecture students have no life.
