Cornell University Top Questions

What is your overall opinion of this school?

Katie

Its amazing. Classes are challenging but enjoyable. It has a good reputation. And is very exciting (has lots of activities around campus).

Matt

Cornell is really beautiful. The first month or two in the fall and the last month in the spring makes all the cold worth it. Students tend to hang out with their friends from freshman year dorms or student organizations they are involved with. The large size of the school is really a non-issue because everyone finds a group of friends

Kate

Cornell is HUGE and I wouldn't have it any other way. There are always different people to talk to so you don't feel penned in by a small group of friends. The community is very strong even though we may not be united. We have a thriving Collegetown where you can get anything from a bagel to a bike to a bottle of rum.

Andy

just the right size best thing about cornell is how beautiful the campus is the people here are so nice when i tell people i go to Cornell, they look at me like I am really smart college town is a great place there is a lot of school pride

Sarah

The best things about Cornell is the diversity. I love that my friends all come from very different backgrounds, and we can learn so much from each other. I would not be able to learn these types of things if I had gone to another school. Another thing that I love about Cornell is that all of my friends are in one of the top programs in their field. We have one of the top architecture schools, engineer schools, and hotel school. The other schools are all very good too. The school is a perfect size. It is small enough that I know people that other people who are not in my major know, but big enough to not know everyone you pass on the sidewalk. When I tell people I go to Cornell, they either say "Congratulations" or they have never heard of it. I don't know very much about Cornell's administration, which speaks poorly of it. I don't know what they are doing. The biggest recent controversy on campus was the "Juicy Campus" website. I think there is a lot of school pride, but I see students wear appeal of our competitors. This makes me sad.

Julie

The best thing about Cornell is that there is such a diversity of students, classes, majors, and extracurricular activities. This allows students to fit in somewhere.

Kelly

Cornell is definitely a work hard, party hard school. The gorges are amazing. Not many schools have waterfalls in the middle of the campus.

Jessie

The best thing at cornell is the large student large, which also means large student organizations and activities. It is such a great school where you can find everything you want to do and are interested in. One thing I would change is grading system. I think cornell has too harsh on grades, which depresses many people quite a bit. With better grading system, cornell would be a perfect college to go to. I spend more of my time in libraries......:( Also, I think the most frequent studnet complaints are about weather.

Jordan

The best part about Cornell is the atmosphere in general (especially in spring.) Most of the people I know are very friendly and everyone is always eager to learn. In addition, the party scene is phenomenal and there is always some type of event to go to. Cornell is the perfect school for me, and I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else.

Brian

Cornell is a huge place with incredible opportunity. However, to find the opportunity or to become involved one has to work to find it and become a part of it. Cornell pushes you to become the best of the best, to develop ambition, and work ethic.

Phoneix

Cornell is dominated by Greek life, as fraternity parties are the only parties that are legally allowed on campus. If they get shut down, there will be no social life at Cornell whatsoever.

Bethany

I love Cornell but coming from a small town it was a very hard adjustment to the size. I personally love my major because through it, the school has become so much smaller to me which has helped me to adjust to the size. Graduating with a class of 37 students going into my first general biology class with about 500 students in one section was very intimidating. I spend most of my time either in Mann library or in the African library. Living in a sorority house it is hard to get work done here so its easiest for me to go to a library to get work done. Or I go to a library in between classes just for some time to relax.

Cornell

Cornellians are extremely proud of our school. We know that it's difficult, and we know that if we make it, it means a lot. When I tell people I go to Cornell, they either are really impressed, or it's obvious that they've never heard of it because they ask where it is and don't really look interested.

Sarah

Cornell has a huge campus, but has the atmosphere of a small school because it is one of two schools in a tiny town (Ithaca). I would change the weather - it's true, it is cold here, but the cold is something that gives every Cornellian, past and present, a common experience that bonds them (or at least gives them something to complain about) for life. I spend most of my time on campus in "Collegetown," where most of the upperclassmen live after freshman year (it's mandatory for freshmen to live on campus), or after living in a sororioty/fraternity house. Cornell's higher administration - the deans, president, etc. are excellent. However, there is a lot of red tape at lower administrative levels, such as within the indivisual colleges. The biggest recent controversy on campus was passing the new Judicial Code. There is school pride to some degree- whether you love it or hate it (and there's not much in between), everyone has a ton to say about Cornell. Cornell is unusual because it is a major research university in the middle of nowhere, so the professors are all incredibly famous, but very accessible since everyone lives within about 5 miles. The biggest complaint is that a) it is cold, and b) there are 20,000 people on campus but you only ever run into the four that you don't want to see.

Charlie

Cornell is huge! During the winter I can go days with only see a certain number of faces, but since the weather has gotten nicer it seems like thousands of more people have suddenly appeared, and it's overwhelming sometimes. Greek life is really big, and since I've gotten involved I'm always paying attention to what the other houses are up to and looking for letters all over campus.

KC

Cornell is a very large school. Be prepared to walk...a lot. There are also several undergraduate colleges, so it's impossible to know everyone. Cornell administration tries to helpful, but they have hundreds of other students to worry about. If you need something done, you have to be persistent. Also, if Cornell can find a way to charge you for it, they will (twice even). School pride is evident at sporting events, but otherwise, there really isn't any point to displaying school pride.

Rory

There's a lot of snow and rain and hills.

Rose

I love the college town. It's seriously perfect, and I love it about Cornell. It's well-priced, off-beat, and reflects real people (compared to, say, UPenn's campus). It's like Greenwich Village, except in the middle of nowhere. I'm really glad I went here.

Tristan

It is incredibly hard and incredibly expensive, but has an amazing reputation.

Christina

I think the campus is just so beautiful, especially now with all of the leaves and flowers coming out. I love that there are so many diverse things to do, and classes to take. The school is very large, but that makes it exciting to run into people you know; being at the end of my Freshman year, I see someone I know practically everywhere I go, which is a big accomplishment. But it's also nice to be able to disappear; Cornell is like its own little city.

Fred

Cornell has a beautiful campus and is well worth the difficult and complicated travels to arrive here. The gorges and natural wonders around campus only add to the astounding architecture of all the buildings. Cornell's student body and administration is WHITE with a motive that focuses only on reputation. This means that when things happen that could scar that reputation, they put a lot of money and effort to hide the incident, even if it means lying and bending ethics to do so. Reputation is above justice at this institution. The administration sees a lot of incidents, but does not publicize or use them as education tools. As such, much of the student body remains ignorant to these events, and often the larger injustices that surround them. So, Cornell is full of highly intelligent students, but also highly socially ignorant students to the pleasure of the University at large. Acknowledge rape on campus! And Acknowledge racial injustices!

Ally

Cornell's campus is beautiful!! It is just the right size since you can always meet new people but it feels small within colleges and organizations. People are impressed when you say you go to Cornell, but I don't think students have enough spirit or Cornell pride.

Catherine

Many people chose not to come to Cornell because its such a large campus. But to be completely honest, sometimes I feel its very small. It's an oxymoron, because with such a large student body somehow everyone knows everyone who actually leaves the library. There are so many subcultures (athletes, greek life, multicultural groups) at Cornell that after a week or so it won't seem so large.

Stefanie

Cornell is an unusual college experience. Students are many, and alcohol and drugs are abundant just as in any other school, however students are all (to some degree) obsessed with their work. I do not believe that the smartest kids from every high school come to Cornell, however, the hardest workers certainly end up here. Students work from early morning until late into the evening to earn high grades. While it is not true that students jump off bridges everyday, there is certainly an underlying stress factor in every student.

Joe

Cornell is not a very friendly campus. People do not go out of their way to meet other people or be friendly when just walking around on campus. You can only meet people in a limited number of environments. When I tell people I go to cornell, a lot of them haven't heard of it. If they have they are like "oohhh cornell you must be smart" which always makes me feel awkward. Cornell's administration is cheap and crappy. They don't care about people, nor the pursuit of knowledge. They run cornell like a corporation, not a place for growth and learning. There is not school pride in the traditional sense, like people caring about football. People have a more general pride in the fact that we are cornellians though.

Sarah

The size of Cornell is the best part, there are so many different diverse people here to meet it makes classes very enjoyable.

Brett

Our school is just right. Not too big, not too small. I don't know if I would change anything. I love Cornell! I think Collegetown is a great place to hang out, especially if you're an upperclassman. It has all the restaurants and bars.

Sam

Most frequent student complaints would be about the amount of work and stress involved here at COrnell.

Morgan

I wish that I could say to anyone, oh I go to Cornell, and even the dumber people would realize that that is the hardest school basically of all the ivies. But I've been asked, "Oh, Cornell College?" which is probably the most insulting thing ever. NO I GO TO AN IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL. Yet as I brag about how we work our asses off for a 3.0 because its impossible to get high grades, I wish that we had crazy grade inflation and could all have 4.0's. That would make me feel way better about my knowledge that I have gained here.

colin

I love the size of Cornell. Its by far the biggest Ivy and I was daunted at first by the 3,000 freshmen but the size of the campus means that there is always something to do. Which is important for kids who think that Cornell is out in the middle of nowhere. Its great because when the weather is nice (a rarity) you can always find some place that you have never been before. Ithaca is an amazing college town filled with geriatric hippies and a fantastic farmers market where you can get anything from gluten free scones and organic produce to Thai food.

Chad

Great school. Blue collared Ivy

Ashley

Cornell has a beautiful campus and that is well suited to the number of students enrolled. It is a very big school which i think is good because I came from a small school where I've known the same people for 14 years. At Cornell I meet new people every day. The collegetown is not as comprehensive as I would like, but then again, Ithaca is a small place, so it's about what you would expect.

Aviva

its a great school overall, I think everyone can find people they get along with and be happy here.

Sarah

I think the campus is beautiful at cornell, even in the worst weather, the buildings and trees look beautiful. As far as things I would change, I think some of the professors are unapproachable and are not that interested in helping students (but I guess this is characteristic of most college campuses). I think there is a good amount of school pride but this would increase significantly if the athletic teams were better. For example, I think there was a lot more school pride because the basketball team did so well this year. I think as far as the most frequent complaints, would be students complaining about work loads.

Alice

The most frequent student complaints are about class registration. Students have to get up at 6:30 am to sign up for classes they want. The best thing about Cornell is the beautiful campus and fun students. I felt there was a lot of school pride this year with our men's and women's basketball teams winning the Ivy League. I spend most of my time on central campus near the clock tower, Willard Strait Hall, and Uris Library. One thing I would want to change is eliminate the gym membership and bus pass fee.

Joelle

Cornell is a huge school with so much to offer. There are 13,000 undergraduate students and the campus is extrmely spacious and beautiful. On the way to class, I often cross a bridge that crosses a waterfall and the school has plantations, too. It's cold, and I think the temperature may turn a lot of people off, but it wasn't too bad this year. Anyway, the sledding is amazing and once it warms up, we are able to appreciate the wonderful weather so much more! I spend most of my time in my dorm, hanging out with friends, but we go out on the weekend and nights to parties, concerts, dinners, and speakers. There is certainly plenty to do.

Rachel

cornell is one of the most beautiful places in the world and there are a million things to do on campus. ithaca is an amazing town with INCREDIBLE food (more restaurants per capita than NYC). the dining halls on campusare amazing. i am in a sorority and its pretty down to earth. people dont realize that i'm smart when they first meet me, so when i tell them that i go to cornell, they are always surprised. i love the reaction. i love spending time in Mann library (CALS library) and running outside. my favorite building is sage chapel. there is a TON of school pride. AEM was just named the fourth undergrad business program in the country. we have one of the best ice hockey, lacrosse, wrestling, and basketball teams in the country. people are always wearing cornell gear. there is a ton of work here. i couldnt imagine going anywhere else.

Ally

really large but there are a lot of ways to make it smaller people are impressed when i tell them i go to cornell spend most of my time in the dorms, dining halls, class, out, at the library everyone complains about the weather and having lots of work

Melanie

I like the size of Cornell, it's big enough to not get bored, but small enough to not feel like you don't matter. People usually are impressed or intimidated when I saw I go to Cornell. I'm in a sorority and I like it, but sometimes I think that Greek Life is stressed too much.

alex

Cornell is really big, which is great, and really well known, you get a lot of respect if you go here

Jeff

The best thing about Cornell is that it is very diverse. There are so many different kinds of people and different majors in a small area that you get to meet a lot of interesting people, and it is rich in culture. Cornell is just the right size, at least in my opinion. When people hear I'm at Cornell for Engineering they think I'm insane. This is partially true because I feel the engineering school is way more work than is healthy for a college student. On campus I spend most of my time stressed out in a lab. Off campus I spend most of my time stressed out in my room doing work. Most of the student complaints are regarding the ridiculous work loads. The winter months are kind of rough, and can get pretty depressing. However, there are a lot of fun things to do here, and Slope Day is something I will never forget.

Bevan

The school is just right--but the campus is too big. People react positively when I tell them I go to Cornell--they are impressed. Most of my time spent on campus is in my school--Hotel Administration building. Collegetown is nice, but I wish it was near a bigger city. It's really cold in the winter, but you definitely appreciate any sunshine. The school pride depends on the student.

Ashley

the best thing about cornell is the life you will experience here. people are from all different places from all over the world and all walks of life. Collegetown is pretty good... a lot of cool restaurants. housing is really expensive, but you cannot live on campus after freshman year (unless its in a greek house, if you want any social life at all)

Liz

big school, offers a lot, diversity in people and things offered, i transferred here and am so happy i came to a bigger school with more motivated students. greek life really opened up a whole new social network to me and i feel i have become all around a lot more involved at cornell. basketball season was a highlight and it was really awesome seeing so many cornell students come out for the games and to support the team

Sarah

Cornell is a beautiful school with challenging academics. My favorite part about Cornell is that there are so many clubs that one can join, so that every person can find something that fits their interests. Also, there are a lot of events that go on around campus, and I truly enjoy attending as many of them as possible in order to get the most out of my Cornell experience.

Josh

Cornell is perfect sized. The location is great, only 4 hours from New York City. Hockey was fun as a freshman. Basketball was great this year.

Dana

It is a big school with a small school feel. Cornell students are getting a priceless education taught by top-notch faculty members. We do have a college town where a lot of upper classmen live. Parties are mostly at fraternity houses and are unlike parties at any other school. Greek life is big, but you do not need to go greek to fit in.

Rosie

Cornell is hard. It's stressful. But it teaches you to manage things well, and how to balance social, academic and extracurricular activities. It's the sort of place that if you can handle it, it makes you a tougher, more adept and capable person.

Julia

Cornell is a beautiful school--it is far away from anything, but there are very few places that are as beautiful (or gorges...haha). It can seem overwhelmingly large (in physical size) at first, but it gets pretty small pretty quick. You definitely have a good balance of seeing people that you know well and meeting new people in virtually any situation. We like our hockey--not much else in terms of sports.

Erica

It is beautiful. In the fall and spring it is a very happy place and everyone loves it. In winter it gets really cold and stressful and people don't like it. The location is rural, but it creates a strong campus environment and there is so much to do on campus all the time. That's why there is such a strong Greek life. And everything is free which is nice. It is a long walk to class, but you get used to it and everyone likes walking after the beginning of freshman year. There is a lot of school pride and everyone is proud to go here.
