What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

David

Back when I was a high school senior, I didn't had the time to make plans of what I was going to do whether I go to college or maybe locate on finding a job in order to make a living for myself. However, I had help from one of my counselors and told me that if I was interested in attending to Hostos Community College. And then I said to the counselor that I would think about it so that I would develop my time to see what my future would be. The only advice that I would give to myself is that I would never give up hope and never stop learning new things that is beyond my path, and believe in myself so that one of these days I would be the person that can be selected into a higher position (a lawyer for example). Why? Because I'm now in a place where I can the important basics of college life and it's the reason that I'm in Hostos Community College so that I may continue to learn about as a student and as a well-known individual.

Knowing what I now know, I would go back in time and tell myself to stick to going to a school that I know I could afford. I used to attend a university that granted me scholarships and aid that I would receive for the first year. I was initially conflicted about which school to attend but decided on the bigger name. Despite the financial assistance, two years went by and it came to a point that I had to transfer out because I could not afford to go to the university any longer. As a result, I would definately go back to tell myself to think more about the distant future as opposed to the near future. I would also tell myself to work to save some money on the side and apply for scholarships for books and other school supplies instead of having to worry about it every semester. I would tell myself not to be easily influenced by others and think about what is best for myself in the long run while learning from my mistakes and others.

If i could back in time and say something about college that i know now. I would say to take school seriously and take advantage of all the resources that they are offering. I would also tell myself to open up a savings account and start putting money into the savings account but the costs in college are unbearable .

My advice to myself would be to not stay close to home and explore the campus life! You might be frightened at first, just like you was frightened on your first day at this high school, however, you'll meet so many people whom will remain in your life post college. Yes you must study hard and achieve the highest mark possible, because it WILL matter when it comes time to getting a job! Although you must study hard, do take advantage of every student activity and events, because it is a once in a lifetime experience that you will never get to experience once you are out of college. Most importantly, start saving up NOW! The more you save up now, the fewer college loans you have to take out. Yes, it is smart to pay interests while you can in college, because it will burn a big hole in your pockets in the long run! Take advantage of as much internships and volunteering as possible, it will definately look good on your resume and improve your chances in gettin that first job. Last but not least, have fun, stay focused, and enjoy the ride!

For starters, I would let myself know that there is nothing to fear. Change is GREAT! you are now transitioning into another world, a world that is so exciting you would have wished to be here sooner. College life is what you make of it. There are plently of student activities to participate in, great tutors to help you exceed in those classes they may seem challenging and the professors are great. The exciting thing about college is you don't have to decide on a major initially if you are unsure of your career path . Linger around for a minute, take some general liberal arts classes, talk with your advisor on what your strenghths are as well as your weaknesses. That's what they are there for and you will be amazed on how many will embrace you with open arms, making your transition from high school to college as easy as possible. The opportunities are endless, your hardwork is recognized and rewarded. Meet with students who are new like yourself and learn how you are not by yourself, and then meet with students like I who will assist you on your road to GREATNESS!
