Dakota State University Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Ian

Despite how small it is, the campus and it's staff are very involved in student life and activities. I participated in over a dozen activities in High School and so didn't expect much going into my first college year. What I didn't realize is that there are still a ton of things for students to get involved with, even students who have never participated in an organized activity before, and plenty of ways to get help with classwork if needed.

Jennifer

I attend college online and I encourage this if you are a busy working mother and wife like myself to give it a try. I have earned an AA and BS while working full time and caring for my two daughters and husband who also attended online college and he recieved his MBA. If i had to do it all over I would have gone to college after highschool but sometimes life just happens and online helps for those of us good people who are trying to better ourselves.

Jayne

I wish I had known how easy it was going to be to make friends and feel a part of the school so I would not have worried so much during high school.

Rhannon

I wish I would have known about the dining services more and that there is a two year rule of residing on campus until junior status is achieved.

Kiana

I wish I would have known the teachers and professors on a better level. It would have been nice to know what they were like before just jumping into one of their classes. Over all though I really enjoy it here at Dakota State University and I would not change the school I am in for anything.

Karin

Where to log in for my online courses.

Brianna

I wish I had known how to manage my time. When I got to college I was a little overwhelmed with volleyball and school. I didn't know if I could make it , but with the help of study tables and just getting the groove of things it has been much better.

Leslie

Before attending DSU I wish I had really known what I wanted to go into. The school has a lot to offer, but going into it not knowing or having an idea of what I wanted to do was not the smartest thing.

Ashley

That there isn't a lot going on during the weekends, so if you don't go home, you should think about getting friends together for movie nights, etc.

DeAndra

I wish I would have known how easy it was to finish my pre-requisites online and finish my degree, while still being able to enjoy living in the Black Hills and having time for my children. I was ready to give up on school so I wouldn't have to miss the big steps in my childrens' lives when I ran across DSU's program. They have changed everything for me and now I am a year away from graduating and have enjoyed everything in my childrens' busy lives as well!

Sarah

I wish I had taken more AP classes in high school so that I could have not repeated several of my generals. They were so similar to my high school classes that it was sometimes boring.

Carrie

I think I did know most everything I needed to know being that I am a returning student after tweleve years of not being in school I asked the right questions this time before I started with DSU. I was quickly reminded how much work school is and this time I want to learn everything I can from my experience in school. I do think the only thing that could have been covered more thoughly was how to use D2L website before classes began.

Megan

I lived in the town of Dakota State University, so I knew a great amount about the university. I wish I would have known that living in the dorms would have been better in my first year of college here. People that live in the dorms at DSU end up becoming more socialized then those who live off campus. I would have liked it if they would have told myself about the advantages of living on campus.

Daniel

I wish that I would have taken a skills test that physically tested me on my capabilities and interest so that I could have made up my mind as to whether or not what I thought were my strengths were actually my strengths.

Amanda

That it is a great friendly school and that the professors really want you to learn.

Cody

I wish that I had known how much more difficult college is than high school. Not only academically, but socially. The first semester was really rough on me. If I was better prepared I belive the first year of college would have been alot smoother for me.

Amber

I wish I had known more about what there is to do in Madison or the lack there of. I wish I would have known the food is not very good and is pretty much the same thing everyday.

Mary

Before coming to college, I wish I had understood my major will take longer than most. Understanding that 12 credits is full time but 14 or 16 a semester is do-able and will get you through much quicker! Especially when majoring in a composite major, taking a few more credits a semster will help pass the time!

Nichole

I wish I would have known how many classes to take my freshman year to have me graduated in the time I wanted. Instead of graduating in 4 years I will be graduating in 4.5. This is ok since I am double majoring but it would have been nice to know.

Nikki

I wish I would have known two things; that there is very little parking for students who live off campus, and that the only place to get everything you need as far as shopping goes, is Lewis!

Jonathon

I wish I had known how much books costs and how little they resell for.
