Davidson College Top Questions

Describe the students at your school.

Darry

I personally think the student body can be more diverse, more honest with people. A lot of people here try to stay too positive and close their eyes when problems arise and say everything is ok. It's very annoying. Most Davidson students come from priviliged families, but that's normal for a private liberal arts college.

Jessie

stuck up, big division between athletes and non-athletes

Charley

I'm gay and while this campus has traditonally been wretched for LGBT students, I really think it's starting to change--almost every frat has an out member and a lot of ugly stereotypes are no longer considered socially acceptable. This is unmistakable progress.

Ryan

Students do not usually talk about how much they will earn one day. Many people coming to Davidson being pre-med, but end up dropping it after some of the "weed out" classes. Besides the Pre-Med and other related tracks, I have not heard of many people, or freshmen at least, who know exactly what they want to do after Davidson.

Erica

Davidson's student body is for the most part homogenous- there is not a high level of diversity on campus. I know this is an issue that the school has been trying to address for the past few years- with some steps toward higher diversity, but I think we can do more to make the campus more openly diverse. I think the fraternity and eating house culture works against diversity to some extent, but I also think that it is within this culture that there is most potential for change. Davidson is mostly middle to upper-middle class socio-economically- as can be seen in hoe the majority of the student body dresses and carries itself. However, I do not feel as if money drives most student's actions on campus, I rarely hear my friends talking about their future in terms of how much money they want to make. I believe that Davidson fosters a sense of idealism in the student's minds - in the sense that people are encouraged to take future paths that fit their interests, not strictly financial desires.

Jennifer

Most students of minority groups find themselves comfortable at Davidson, though it is a constant struggle to work against the white majority of students. Groups form- athletes, racial groups, clubs, etc. One great thing is the mixing of class years. On such a small campus, students get the chance to interact and be friends with people of different ages.

Jordan

Diversity is an issue at Davidson, but one that the school and its students are working to change. Students coming from large cities might feel out of place in Davidson's small town. Some students are more politically aware and active than others.

Emily

Not very much diversity

Lauren

Everyone seems to be pretty wealthy and well educated. The campus can be a little conservative for my taste

Margaret

Diversity is very important to Davidson.

Jennifer

Though people claim that there is no diversity on campus, anyone can find their group here. Some are just smaller and less represented than others. There has recently been some cases of homophobic remarks at weekend parties, but this disrespect is usually fueled by alcohol. It's a little sad. Overall, the student body is preppy. People don't dress up for class ALL the time, but when warmer weather roles around, the seersucker and sundresses make a well-represented appearance. There are people in class in sweatpants, but most make an effort to look presentable, even if they were up partying the night before.

Dale

The student body is growing more and more diverse by the year and the honor code creates an atmosphere of comfort and trust among students even if you don't know someone you trust them on that level.

Austin

Davidson has a very diverse student body and becomes more and more diverse every year. For this reason, you will many different type groups on campus. However, this is not a problem at all because the whole Davidson community is acceptable of everyone. Although certain races or racial groups might seem to hang out together, it is not because they feel like they have to. They do this by choice. Students wear a wide range of clothes to class. Some people wear gym clothes while others tend to dress up. It definitely depends on the day and the time of the class. In the dining hall, usually the tables are mixed. There is not a certain table for a specific group. Students can sit anywhere and feel very comfortable doing so at the same time. Davidson students are from all over. There are lots of foreign students from all over the world. In addition, there are students from California, Texas, Midwest, and the north. However, there are also lots of students from North Carolina and the south in general, but it is not an overwhelming southern school. Some of my best friends are from all over the country. Students come from different financial backgrounds. Davidson has established a No Loan policy and is committed to helping students attend college debt free. Students are generally politically aware and some are very active as well. Some students are left, other tend to fall on the right side and some in the middle. There is not a predominate side. Although students do talk about and worry about their future, they do not seem to be obsessed with money.

Ryan

There is a strong international presence on campus at Davidson. One of my best friends is from Hungary. Another is from the Dominican Republic. I've met people from exotic, far away places like Ecuador, China, Ethiopia, and South Dakota (just kidding!). Almost everyone studies abroad and the college is dedicated to bring international awareness on campus through speakers, cultural events, discussions, etc.

Kelly

Racial lines are pretty rigid here- there is diversity but it's not very integrated. The gay community is growing as the years pass. Students are very preppy- lots of polo shirts and pearls, but there's also a contigent who do not fit that stereotype. Davidson students are from all over the country and really all over the world.

anne

yay body-building athletes!

Sarah

Although Davidson tries to make its student body diverse, this is not really the case. Like my high school (a small private school in Charlotte), Davidson's student body is largely white middle/upper class and could use some diversification.

Virginia

Davidson students come from all over the place. There are probably more from around this area, the Southeast US, but I have two girls from Ecuador and one girl from Ghana living on my hall and my boyfriend is from Greece. So diversity isn't as great as it could be, but we are working on it and there are definitely lots of different people if you pay attention. There are definitely some defined groups on campus like the varsity athletes, but everyone is generally very accepting and has lots of friends outside of that established group.

Ginny

most people think that we are all the same or that there is not enough diversity. but i think that is only racial diversity because the majority of the student body is white. Obviously everyone comes from different backgrounds and different experiences. So, i think that we should focus less on the lack of different appearances and more on seeing the major differences that we all have.

Courtney

A lot of students seem to be from the eastern portion of the US, from NY down through FL.

Reese

Most of Davidson's studnets are from the Southern region, but Davidson I believe is hoping to change that. Usually people make friends from their freshman halls and keep those for a long itme, but the sports teams also keep to themselves, somewhat. However everyone talks to everyone. There is this idea that all Davidson students are rich, but that's not the case always. However, money is rarely discussed. Most everyone really enjoys giving back to the community and really enjoys community service. I just hope people visit other countires to see how the world is outside Davidson/ the United States.

Marie

Diverse

Cristina

Most people on Davidson's campus are religious, or at least spiritual. It is not a diverse campus at all, racially, sexually or other. People usually wear sundresses to class, at least when it is warm out. In the winter usually jeans and a sweater.

Kyle

Smart and often a bit pretentious. Usually a little naive about the outside world considering they live in a bubble. The atmosphere sometimes feels very high school-y, which is lame and kinda sucks

Emily

I love the close connection among Davidson students. They are students of high character and participate in a diverse range of activities. Davidson students tend to be well-rounded and interested in community service.

Kelly

The student body could be more diverse. There are definite groups of people- the nerds, the frat boys, the jocks. Racial and sexual orientation diversity is lacking.

Sarah

Davidson is very aware and open to different races and religions. Students are encouraged to speak their opinions no matter what the context. So although it is a very small school, everyone feels at home and comfortable with the people around them. Although there is a stereotype that everyone in the south is conservative, there are many democrats here. This diverse political opinion comes from the diverse backgrounds of Davidson students. We come from all other the world, and I must say I feel very at home coming from New Jersey.

Blake

We are not a very diverse campus in general. Racially, we do have both black and white students, but blacks are very outnumbered. There is an LGBT group on campus, and I believe most people have had fine experiences when discussing their sexuality, but I know of others who would not be comfortable coming out in the Davidson environment. Students are from all over the country and are very aware and active.

Rachel

Most students dress "preppy" for class. In warm weather guys will wear khaki shorts and a polo and girls will wear everything from jcrew shorts and a polo to skirts and a top to cute Lily Pulitzer sundresses. In the winter girls mostly wear designer jeans. When in doubt just put on something from J-Crew.

KC

Davidson has a great studnet body. While most are wealthy, students are not flashy with their money. Additionally, students tend to be more liberal and conservative, however, there is quite a balance.

Avon

At first glance the students may seem really homogeneous, but it is really diverse in just about every respect.

Laura

Davidson students are all intelligent and talented, but we do not have a lot of socio-economic diversity. A lot of students come from wealth backgrounds. I also think that Davidson is not politically aware at all in comparison to my high school outside of DC. Students all have opinions, but no one wants to talk about them.

Hannah

Davidson students cover a wide range of stereotypes. Some students dress up for class but it isn't nessacary. The majority of students however are affluent, southern, conservatives. But most are much more tolerant than their conterparts at other schools.

Dawson

All types of students interact and everyone is friendly. In terms of what people wear to class, you can find just about anything. Some people dress up, some people wear sweats. And the great part is, no matter what extreme you're at that day, no one else cares!

Emily

I've struggled a little with the high percentage of people from wealthy backgrounds here. Socio-economic diversity could definitely use some work. People dress really well here. Preppiness pervades the academic and social scene. Most people dress nicely for class, but it's not too much of a standard. Sweatpants and a t-shirt work, too. The professors don't care at all. I have found the majority of people here pretty politically informed. From what I can see, conservatives, liberals, moderates, and the politically jaded are well-represented.

Rebecca

Davidson students tend to be relatively liberal, there is more of a gay scene than there used to be and most of campus is really accepting. people dress well and enjoy being social and going out, but understand that they also have to study and work hard. there are a lot of people from well off families, but there are also a lot of people at davidson who have a lot of financial aid.

Amanda

Overall we are a fairly homogenous student body. There are minorities but they do not represent a significant portion of the population. We have a good mix of liberal, conservative and moderate perspectives. The average Davidson student comes from a fairly affluent background though there are many students who attend davidson on significant scholarship. The students come from all over the united states and foreign nationalities are well represented.

Jordan

Davidson's student body is somewhat diverse, though still primarily white students. I don't think anyone would feel out of place, though. Kids here are interesting and accepting. I think financial backgrounds are becoming more diverse, too. Students aren't that politically active, though unfortunately it seems like the left side dominates like at most colleges probably.

Katie

The student body is fairly homogenous but lots of effort is being made to change that. The stereotype of rich white prep school kids is changing.

Cody

I think for a small, Southern college, Davidson is pretty diverse. People aren't afraid to be themselves, as there's a niche for everyone. I think like all colleges, there are 'groups', but the boundaries between them aren't concrete. There are some kids who get dressed up for classes, but there are also plenty of students who come to class wearing shorts and a T-shirt. The North is definitely well-represented on campus, as are other regions of the country -- it's not just Southerners at a Southern college.

Alissa

mainly white, middle upper class student body- from wealthy southern towns or wealthy towns in the tri-state area studnets are politically aware, have partisanship, talk about their political beliefs

Claire

The past few years have seen a rise in diversity on campus, and various student groups have been very active in the idea of acceptance. A couple of weeks ago, the SGA in conjunction with a couple other groups held a "Rally for Change" which aimed to open up conversation about diversity on campus.

Alana

Everyone is always very nice and pleasant the first semester until groups start getting made. But it doesn't seem that difficult to meet new people all the time. Everyone is really nice all the time. I love all my friends who I have met here- they are some of the most amazing people and RLO did great jobs pairing people up on the hall. Everyone has a laidback preppy well put together dress in class and when going out. sweats are usually accompanied by pearls in girls for example. and khakis and sperries for a lot of boys. but really anything goes. and as does the type of people here. although it may feel too preppy a lot of the time- everyone can find there own nitch- except goths.

Heather

nice kids.

Liza

People wear anything from sweats to sundresses to class. The majority of people are white though I'm not sure about socio-economic status.

Blake

Everyone is so friendly and has a smiling face. its a great social atmosphere.

Julie

I wish more interaction was encouraged. At first its reallye asy to meet lots of people but then its easy to forget about how amazing the student body is.

Alanna

Working really hard on diversity, which has been a huge topic the past few years here and will continue to be. Lots of preppie kids.

Laura

Not very diverse, mosly hight SES, but very welcoming to diverse students.

alison

the student body is mostly whie and upper middle class with a small degree of divesity. I do not feel there is a great deal of racism, though a lttle bit of elitism exsts
