What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Margaret

At Davidson, anyone can be involved in a very large range of activities- social, academic, service, whatever it may be..

Jennifer

The social life at Davidson is exactly what you make it. People here are extremely involved: plays, dance recitals, sports, guest lecturers, Union Board activites, parties on the Court- everything has a very high attendence. Though Davidson doesn't have sororities, we do have Eating Houses, which are all-girl social clubs. People don't really miss sororities- I'm in an Eating House (there are four) and we throw parties with the fraternities, have Sisterhoods, eat meals together (each house has a chef to cook lunch and dinner). The eating house/fraternity scene is pretty big and is basically the only way to party on the weekends. All parties are open beginning at a certain, however, so really anyone is welcome to join in the festivities. The weekends are a time when students here actually relax for a little big. Yes, there is a lot of drinking going on, but if that's not your scene, there are plenty of other things to do, both college-sponsered and non-college sponsered.

Dale

Eating houses are a great way to get into the social scene on Patterson court. I also meet a good number of my closest friend through Warner Hall. Students do leave their doors open. If you're awake at 2 am on a Tuesday you're probably cramming for a test or writing a paper all night. The dating scene is none existent, you are either hooking up with someone on the weekends, or you're engaged to be married. If you're not drinking on a Saturday night, you're probably just too tired from your week to go out. The Theatre program at Davidson is amazing and depending on the show usually well attended. Athletic events are also well attended depending on the sport. This is mainly based on the fact that it's your friends participating in the above activities and you want to support them. Charlotte, NC is a wonderfully youthful city and has plenty to do whether it's getting student rush tickets for $10 to OperaCarolina, watching Davidson Basketball at the Bobcats arena, or hitting up the bar/club scene with alum.

Austin

The majority of the campus participates in athletics in some way. There are a ton of varisty athletes, but also lots of club and intramural participants as well. I play both Club Tennis and Intramural Basketball. There are also lots of other clubs/organizations such as Young Democrats/Republicans, Curry Club, DIA (international association), P.S. (student run restaurant)..just to name a few. There are also tons of service organizations. I am involved with Tutoring at Davidson Elementary School as well as helping out at the Ada Jenkins Center. Yes, students tend to leave their doors open on the hall if they just walk down the hall for a minute. If they leave, they will shut the door, but usually don't lock it. Because of our honor code, students feel very safe leaving doors unlocked. Although most sports tend to attract a small crowd, mens basketball attracts a huge crowd especially due to their success in the NCAA tournament. Guests speakers and theater productions are also fairly popular depending on the topic. Dance Ensemble is one of the most popular dance shows every year. I met most of my friends from my Freshman Hall. You become really close with your Freshman Hall through all of the activities and hall programs that you do as Freshman. If I am ever awake at 2am, I am most likely studying or writing a paper and trying not to pull an allnighter. Most people probably go out 2-3 nights per week. Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights are big at Davidson. We do not have sororities on campus. Instead, we have eating houses(like a sorority, but not as intense). However, we do have fraternities. They are both fairly popular, but not in any way exclusive. All parties are open so any student can come regardless of their affiliation. There are lots of options on campus that may not involve drinking. The Union Board plans something every weekend in the Union. Some examples are: Movie Night, Paint Your Own Pottery, Hypnotist, After Midnight Chick-fil-A or pancakes. Off campus there are lots of good restaurants and some shops. Davidson also has a lake campus where students can go and hang out, swim, sail, play games and enjoy the beautiful North Carolina weather.

Ryan

There are lots of options for a weekend at Davidson. The fraternities and eating houses have terrific parties and the union board always organizes fun, "sub-free" activites if you're not up for a party that night. But remember, it's Davidson: some Friday nights are going to be homework nights. And that's okay.

Kelly

Fraternities and eating houses are pretty popular. Student government and service groups are also very prevalent. I am involved in choir and my eating house. Students definitely leave doors unlocked and open. Basketball is very popular right now, guest speakers are well-attended depending on who it is. The dating scene is fairly sparse- people are either in long-term relationships or just hooking up. I met my closest friends through my eating house, through my freshman hall, or through other friends. First night down and self selection night are two big traditions with frats and eating houses.

anne

warner is naturally the best eating house. Conner is generally slutty but there are a few mold-breakers.

Sarah

I spend a large amount of my time training and/or competing with the cross country and track teams. Other than that I like to spend time with the girls on my hall. I love my freshman hall - I keep my door open almost all the time that I am on the hall, and it is great to have people just walk in and out. My closest friends on the hall are also in Warner with me, so I spend a good bit of time on weekends there.

Virginia

There are three main party nights each week...Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Some people party other days, too, it's just smaller and much less official. Fraternities and eating houses are great but they aren't absolutely the most important organizations on campus. Fraternities are probably more competitive than eating houses, but you have friends from all different frats and eating houses. The best thing is that the parties are open to everyone so independents are free to come to anything they want.

Ginny

Social life is good. we definitely have a good time. I love that there are no sororities here. I really love being in an eating house because it has the sisterhood qualities that a sorority has but it is much more layed back. There are also always things going on in the union at night that give people other things to do besides drinking. Davidson always has tons of things going on and there are normally two great things i have to choose between when it comes to events and speakers.

Courtney

There is always something to do on campus, whether it's a basketball game, a guest speaker, or a party. If you're not doing work, something fun and interesting is available.

Reese

Warner Hall is an eating house of four and is the one I'm in. It's a fun way to meet other girls on campus that you believe you relate to the most and have meals with them. Most girls join eating houses and most boys join fraternities, however it is not necessary. THose who don't join are part of a different sort of group, such as the Duff/ultimate Frisbee team. Basketball gaems are popular but other sports are not that popular. There are many events on the weekneds both alcoholic and non alcoholic. Dance parties are a must every weekend night. There is some drinking during the week and on only one night, Wednesday, are there any events.

Marie

Lots of athletes

Cristina

If you're awake at 2am on a Tuesday, you are most likely writing a paper or studying for a test. Everyone is so involved in many different organizations that at night is the time to really get work done. A large percentage of students are athletes and many are part of greek life on campus.

Kyle

Social life is weak compared to other schools, but we have fun when we can.

Emily

Davidson is very much centered around the campus. There are activities put on by the college every weekend as well as events planned by the school's greek organizations.

Sarah

Everyone is very active. There are a ton of activities to get involved in, ranging from sports, theater, art, and other clubs. The student Union does a great job at organizing a range of events for kids to do on the weekends if you don't want to go to the court. The court hosts the fraternity houses and eating houses (no sororities). Girls are allowed to choose the house they would like to join taking out the pressure and caddiness. I am a member of Connor House. I must say it is another plus of the school. The houses will throw parties on the weekends, while having seniors host students at their apartments. The social scene can seem very monotonous, but it is very easy to mix up what you do from weekend to weekend.

Blake

Everyone on campus is a part of at least one, if not a dozen organizations on campus. We have a very large percentage of athletes, as well as an active greek life. People do not really date on our campus. I think the reason for it is because Davidson is so time-intensive as it is, adding a boyfriend or girlfriend into the mix would not be feasible for many. People party usually three nights a week- Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. When it is nice out we like to go to lake campus and take out a boat, go swimming, or lay out.

Rachel

One of the prompts is if you're awak at 2am on a Tuesday, what are you doing? The answer to this question is you are most definitely studying, writing a paper, or finishing your reading for your 8:30 on Wednesday morning. What do you do off campus? Every weekend I go off campus for dinner on Friday and Saturday night. It is a great time to get away, enjoy some different types of food and socialize with friends in a casual setting.

KC

social life is very laid back. you can attend court parties without being a member, and the eating houses are very inclusive. The union has a lot of activites for those who choose not to drink. If you are awake at 2am on Tuesday, you are most likely studying.

Laura

People study a lot on weekdays (and sometimes weekends) so the social life isn't crazy. The fraternities and eating houses contribute a lot to keeping things going. I really only ever stay on campus for parties/activities on the weekends though... not sure if thats good or bad

Hannah

If I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday I am in the Library, if it was a Weds. i would be out at the court or senior apartments. My closest friends i have are from my hall and classes. The dating scene is either hookup buddies or a serious relationship. It sucks. It is scary how many alumni marry another alumni. Last weekend i went to a court party that was thrown by my eating house, Warner Hall. Court parties are typically dancing and drinking.

Dawson

There's plenty to do on campus--concerts, sproting events, Union board activities, the lake campus, parties held on patterson court. The social scene at patterson court is extremely open and parties are open to all students regardless of your social affiliation. That keeps people in-touch so when you go out you're not just surrounded by people in your eating house/fraternity.

Emily

There are SO many activities and groups to be a part of at Davidson. And there are a TON of speakers and performances. My work study is in the ticket office and I love it because I always know what's going on. Our theater department rocks and some really cool artists/performers/groups have come to Davidson this year. There's always so much going on here that it's hard to get off campus. The party scene here is definitely active. Most parties happen "down the hill," on Patterson Court, where all the fraternities and eating houses (pseudo-sororities, minus rushing) are or in the senior apartments. Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday are the party nights. Drinking and dancing are common weekend activities and the campus police are pretty relaxed. At Davidson the party and drinking scene is strictly optional, though. If it's not your thing, no pressure. You'll still have plenty of friends and plenty of fun. The Union Board (student activities) puts on plenty of sober, often themed events and it's all free. Well, kind of. We do pay an arm and a leg to go here. The dating scene is practically nonexistent. There's not much casual dating; either your randomly hooking up on the weekends or your practically married. Davidson students are often too busy to date, as sad as that sounds.

Rebecca

The most prevalent groups are frats and eating houses, I am in Connor House. I also am in a club that is raising money to build a school in Uganda and an eating disorder awarness group. people are extremely trusting, people never lock their doors. Most of my closest friends are on my hall, Davidson does a great job of matching people up so that similar people all live together on the same hall.

Amanda

Campus is full of activities. There are the D-1 athletics to participate in or just be a huge fan and supporter of . Also there are organizations specifically for minorities. The fraternities and eating houses offer wonderful opportunities to interact and socialize. There are a variety of clubs based around so many different issues; there is definitely something for everyone on campus to become passionate about.

Jordan

A lot of opportunities exist at Davidson, and they are very well advertised so you won't miss out like you might at other colleges. Fraternities are not that huge here at Davidson, but that's who I like to hang out with and there is a good social life (although not everyone here is into partying, but you get to know and hang out with a cool group of people who do.) Wednesdays, Fridays, adn Saturdays are big nights for going out here. Most of the parties are on campus, and you rarely have to worry about stuff getting broken up by police.

Katie

Our court parties are fun themed dance parties. They get a little repetitive but its always a good time. Not many people go off campus but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Cody

There's a very safe environment at Davidson. People leave their doors unlocked, their computers at desks in the library, and their book bags in the halls without fear of anyone stealing from them. The only athletic event that is universally popular at Davidson is men's basketball. There aren't a lot of options for fraternities on campus, but they're definitely a visisble institution in terms of defining groups of boys and organizing parties.

Alissa

students don't even lock doors, and they are usually open if they are in their room. eating houses and fraternities are a big part of the social scene here, but you can definitely have a life outside of it. people usually party 1 night a weekend, and pick one night to stay in and relax and rest up for the week ahead or to catch up on homework. people also sometimes go out on wednesdays. alcohol is readily available on any given going out night.

Claire

If I'm awake at 2 am on a Tuesday, I'm in the union eating pizza on a study break from the library... I met my closest friends through my team and the other athletes. My closest friends not associated with an athletic team I met through Connor or through my Freshman hall.

Alana

Everyone seems to be invovled in a sport or keeping fit in some way. EVERYONE. Frats and eating houses are a MUST for most individuals. its odd if you aren't in one. Everyone leaves their doors open. Everyone goes to every type of event. dating SUCKS though. Weekends are awesome and invovled lots of drinking and dancing and hanging out. but a lot of drinking and dancing.

Heather

Patterson Court is awesome. Everyone can go to ANY party, no matter what frat/eating house you are associated with. Obvi, Connor House is the best eating house.

Liza

Sports, fraternities, and eating houses are the most prevalent social groups on campus. I am involved with Connor House, an eating house with some amazing girls. Most of my friends are part of this organization, and my guy friends are mostly Kappa Sigmas or soccer players. Basketball games are great events to attend, and most of the student body shows up. Patterson Court is where people go out to at night, where the upper classmen housing is as well as the fraternity and eating houses.

Blake

Even though students study really hard, they also know how to have a good time which is important.

Julie

I love being a part of my eating house. We have a great time and do community service too. There is a nice mix of partying at Davidson too. There is always something going on. People are fairly social and leave doors open. If you want it to be, Davidson can be a great work hard party hard school.

Alanna

I feel like there are activities available for every type of person on campus. I started one this year and was given a lot of support to make that happen, so I know first hand. There are also many things on weekends that don't involve drinking at all, while there is always an open party to go to. Students are very friendly.

Laura

Work hard, drink hard...

alison

davidson may be small and serious but we definitey know how to party.

Bianca

We have fraternities and eating houses. Eating houses are the Davidson version of sororities. I am in Warner Hall eating house and it is amazing! A lot of students leave their door unlocked or open. Basketball is the most popular sport. Davidson brings some very amazing guest speakers. Dating is hard here because the campus is small so everyone knows everyone and everything about them and we work hard so a lot of dates turn into study sessions. My closest friends i met during freshman orientation activities. Some traditions and events include: during exam time all students on campus lean out their windows or go outside at midnight and scream to the top of their lungs; SPRING FROLICS whoo hooo!; Rush week for the frats; Christmas in Davidson; After midnight with free chick-fil-a; freshman olympics; flickerball. Peopl have the opportunitie to party on campus Wednesday through Saturday.

Maria

The most popular team on campus is the basketball team, but this isn't because everyone wants on it as much as because everyone is in awe. At Davidson we have fraternities and eating houses (rather than sororities). The frats bid and pledge and what not while the girls in the eating houses get chosen via computer (most girls get their first choice). These groups are pretty important and the marjority of people are in some sort of house. From what I hear from friends at other schools, our houses are not nearly as intense as those at other schools. There is little if any animosity between houses and if anyone chooses to be independent that is completely accepted. Athletic events, guest speakers and theater things are pretty popular. There are also improve groups and a capella groups, all of which get a lot of attention. People on campus like to over-commit, it's a habbit. Dating here is extremely difficult, although many people are able to do it. I'm not exactly sure why it's so hard. Maybe because everyone knows everyone which can cause rumors. Also because everyone is so busy! If/when I'm awake at 2am on a Tuesday I'm doing homework. There are very few Tuesdays or Thursdays that this doesn't happen. Parties happen almost every weekend and most Wed. If people don't go to a party they're usually doing work. If not they'll watch a movie, going to something in the Union or just go to bed (sleep is precious!). Few people go off campus. If they do it's usually to see a movie or go to dinner.

Ginnie

There are many campus activities to choose from. I am a member of Warner Hall Eating House. As a member, the house hosts social activities for me to get to know other students and the house is also involved in charity events. Every weekend the eating houses and fraternities will have parties, but the student union will host alternative activities students can partake in. As a freshman, I met many of my friends on my freshman hall, but otherwise I have met friends by participating in various clubs. The Royal Shakespeare Company also has a residency at Davidson which makes for great plays. The basketball games are the big sporting events on campus.

Allison

I am co-capitain of Club Tennis and athletics are definatly big on campus. Our largest student group is Davidson Dance Ensemble (I am a part of it). We are completely student run and choreographed and perform in sold out shows in both fall and spring. It is a great way for anyone (with or without experience) to get involved in dance. I'm also active in Reformed University Fellowship and there are a variety of different religious outlets on campus (but also no pressure to join them). Photography club is a way that I pursue my artistic interests. I leave my door open whenever I'm in the room. Especially on freshman halls, all doors are always open and people just live in and around the hall. I go to every home basketball game--they are VERY popular. My best friends are from my freshmen hall and building, but you meet people everywhere. Thats the benefit of a small school. If I'm awake on 2am on a Tuesday I'm most likely studying...or going to Cookout (a local milkshake place). We dont have sororities, we have eating houses (I am a member of Warner Hall). They operate similarly, but are self selected which reduces the pressure. They are also non-residential. All fraternity and eating house parties are open to the whole campus, so you don't need to be a member to attend. There are plenty of options for non-drinking weekend activities. The Union Board puts on events almost every weekend with things like Casino Night, Paint Your Own Pottery, etc. Also, there is something to be said for just watching a movie every now and then. If you really get bold, you can venture into Charlotte, but usually there is so much going on on campus that it is hard to tear yourself away.

Michelle

All Davidson students are busy academically and with extra curriculars, but we know how to have fun too. Parties down at the court are always fun. I am in an eating house and it is a great way to meet people and let loose at the end of a stressful work day!

Alex

We have great traditions on Patterson Court (our Greek scene). Theme parties are very popular. Basketball games always draw a big crowd, but like I said, its hard to get students to attend anything on a weeknight that doesn't take place in the library. The library is the place to be on a weekday night. Drinking culture is big here, but there are events for non-drinkers I think. We work hard, play hard.

Libby

The social life at davidson may be a bit extreme, as most students definately follow a "work hard, play hard" policy THe greek life is pretty laid back, which is nice because frats and eating houses don't control my every action going along with the typical Davidson student image as an overworked and overbooked person, most students are part of a lot of clubs, which is good becuase this means that there are tons of events on campus, even though the school is pretty small

Cecilia

Students here try to do too much. Work takes up a big art of our lives, and when the day is done we do not have a lot left for other stuff. Because of this our extracurricular activities sometimes suffer. There are not enough people that can commit themselves to so many different organizations.

Caroline

I love being in an eating house on campus. I am in Connor House and love it. The small school feeling is great when going out because you know everyone and everyone is there to watch out for you. I met my closest friends on my freshmen hall.

Katie

Dorm doors are always left open. You can leave your stuff everywhere without fear of losing it. Frat and Eating houses are pretty big. Drinking is a big deal. People drink to get obliterated.

Jerry

A good balance
