What are the most popular student activities/groups?

Ryan

the social life is amazing!!! i party every weekend

Royce

I am in Connor House, one of the equivalents of a sorority on campus. The social scene is fun if you like to go out 2 or 3 times a week but you will usually see the same crowd unless its a weekend. Students can leave their doors unlocked, and often do.

Liz

Frats and Eating Houses are popular and I definitely reccommend joining one to be a part of the social life. It's also a great way to meet friends---especially upper classmen!

Abby

We have 8 national fraternities and 4 eating houses. An eating house is similar to a local sorrority, with the exception of a few things that make it a lot less intense. We do not have a rush process. Second semester freshman year, girls can cluster in up to groups of four. Then they rank the four houses and get placed according to a lottery system. No one is discriminated against, and most girls get their first or second choice, but they can switch after a semester if they're not happy. We do not live in the houses, eating houses or fraternities. They are simply spaces to eat and hold events. All houses have a personal chef and I eat at my house 10 meals a week. Also, all parties are completely open to everyone on campus, Greek or independent, with the exception of a few certain events like formals.

Anna

People here are very active, especially becuase we are the smallest Division I school. So, a lot of students are varsity athletes and many others participate in club and intramural sports. We have fraternities for men and eating houses for women. I am in an eating house, Warner Hall. The main difference between a sorority and an eating house is the fact that an eating house is not nationally recognized and we do not have rush. We do a lot with service, primarily our effort to raise money for AIDS. Every year we host our Red and Black Ball, which raises thousands of dollars for AIDS. We eat our meals at the house and participate in a number of social activities. I have loved being a part of the house. It has expanded my social network considerably, and it's just fun to be a part of a smaller community.

Charlotte

"Work hard, play hard" is such a stereotype but it applies at Davidson. After all, we need to unwind from hours spent in E.H. Little library. The 'going out' nights are Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. The great thing about Davidson is that there are plenty of people who do not drink so you're never pressured to participate if you don't want to. On the flip side, if you do drink, you'll never have a problem finding a good time down at Patterson Court.

Parker

The dating scene here is basically non-existent, which is definitely frustrating. Most people here either hook-up or date one person for a long time.

Diane

The social life on campus is great. The Union Board always provides activities for students to participate in on weekends and the eating houses and fraternities provide parties as well. There are many different clubs and activities on campus, so that one could never be bored. If you want, you can also start your own group. My closest friends are on my freshman hall and in my eating house. An eating house or fraternity is a great way to get involved in numerous ways on campus and meet great people.

Alexa

The social life at Davidson is prominant, but can be avoided if desired. Many of my friends at Appalachian State University come down to Davidson to party and dance. There are court parties, held by fraternities and eating houses, on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. They are usually themed and have a great turn out. Every other night, students are studying. No one would judge you for studying on a Saturday night, though.

jane

Many things to do on campus

Anna

court is fun, organized,safe parties

Allison

mostly centered around the eating houses and fraternities. students leave doors unlocked and can leave their things around campus

Chris

Their is somewhat of a divide between students who are involved in Patterson Court and those who aren't. Patterson Court is a nice aspect of social life at Davidson. If I am awake at 2am on a Tuesday, I am most likely writing a paper.

Jessica

Davidson has a lot of extracurricular activities. The Davidson Lake Campus is great, and the water credit requirement lets you participate in water activities. While there is not a big bar scene at Davidson, there are a lot of fraternity and eating house parties that are open to all. Social Life stays on campus which I think is good.

Charlie

There is ALWAYS something to do here at Davidson. ALWAYS. Whether it is a speaker, a performance, a sporting event, a party, you name it, something is happening. RUF is a popular Christian club that is well-attended. The Basketball games are always well-attended. GSA has a big presence on campus. The Fraternities and Eating Houses are very popular here. I love Warner Hall (the Eating House I am in). There are activities done through the houses every weekend and Wednesday night. I have become so close with the girls in my house. But it is a more relaxed scene than at other colleges I've visited. There is no pressure to do anything, but if you're up for it you are more than welcome. Everyone here is so inviting. I have yet to lock my door this year because I'm used to friends just dropping by and chatting for hours. I can call up my friends and know that if I want to do something I will find at least one person on any given night at any hour who will hangout. Of course there is drinking if you are into that scene and alcohol is very easily obtained. But if you are not into that scene then there is always something going on in the Union. They play movies, have performances, have pancake breakfasts at midnight, bring in chick-filet until 2:30am, have contests, and so much more. Many people stay in the dorms and hangout with hall-mates, hosting their own parties. Many more go "down-the-hill" to the senior apartments as well as the frat and eating houses to dance. There is always a dance party Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday night. They are almost always planned in advance but sometimes we will have spontaneous dance parties in the houses (which are so much fun!). There really is no need to go off campus because there is always so much to do here. In fact, whenever I do leave campus I worry that I am missing something back at Davidson. It is nice to leave every once in a while to go shopping or to the movies or to eat a nice meal, but generally everyone stays on campus.

Jessica

davidson varsity athletes are the most popular people on campus, especially the basketball team. im involved in davidson swimming and warner hall. i met my closest friends through school orgaizations and sports. davidson is really great about having events on the weekends that require no drinking and keep students safe on campus. parties and events on campus with campus police presence most definitely decrease unsafe activity and drinking and driving.

Sarah

There's a pretty large mix of what students join. There are the varsity sports which are pretty popular (especially basketball). There are also a lot of club teams. Ultimate frisbee is pretty popular and so is flickerball (a mix between football and rugby). There are a lot of different activities and if there's not one you want, you can start one. Students definitely leave their doors open the majority of the time they're in there. Athletic events are popular, depending on the sport. First basketball, then maybe soccer, then football... Theater performances are popular, depending on what it is. We have a performance called Dance Ensemble where anyone can choreograph a dance and anyone can participate. It was definitely sold out both nights. The dating scene is confusing - the stereotype is that everyone hooks up and no one dates. That seems to be the case for most people, but I have a boyfriend, so who knows. My closest friends are either on my hall or in the same dorm or in Warner Hall. At 2am on a Tuesday I'm probably just messing around, talking. I don't do work that late. People party quite a lot, actually. Not everyone does, it's probably 50-50 but there are definitely a lot of parties.

Cody

Tons of clubs (OLAS, MSA, Red Cross, Break Dance club....) Fraternities and Eating Houses (no sororities) Party on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday Student Motto: "Study Hard, Party Hard"

Laura

Everyone i know plays some sort of sport, either varsity or club, and most people are in either a frat or an eating house (or tried out an eating house for a semester). The freshman always have their doors open, but most other people leave them cracked or definately unlocked. The nights to party are wednesday, friday, and saturday. The union has activities on weekend nights for people who dont want to drink or go to a party- a favorite is paint your own pottery which I will go to even if I do plan to go out later in the night... you have to get their early to get a mug.

Christina

I am on the crew team and it has been one of the most fun and rewarding experiences i've ever had. I never would have been able to participate in a team like this at a larger school. Athletics, particularly basketball, are very big here. Games are well attended in most sports and there is HUGE school spirit. As for feeling safe, I never lock the door to my dorm room, I leave my computer unattended in the library along with my wallet and iPod and I walk home from the library by myself at 1 am without any worry.

Casey

Men's basketball is obviously the most popular sport but the other sports get some support. Most people leave their doors open and no one ever locks them- Honor Code. Theatre plays are very popular as is Dance Ensemble. Depending the speaker those events are sometimes good. Most people make friends with people on their freshman hall or their sports team. At 2am on Tuesday you are either working or sleeping. Big events are the Cake Race for freshmen, Midnight Scream during exams, and Spring Frolics. People party Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday We don't have sororities, just Eating Houses. They are very popular for the girls. The guys are in Frats and they aren't quite as well supported. Even if you don't join one there is an open party you can go to almost every weekend. The Union Board plans some fun stuff if you don't want to drink. Most of it involving free food. People don't really leave campus to party that often. Maybe upperclassmen do it more.

Emily

I am a member of Connor House and the club lax team. I eat all my meals at Connor, hang out at the house a lot, I was a committee head for a breast cancer fundraiser... It's a large part of my Davidson experience. People say that the Court dominates the social scene, but despite affiliations, everyone's doors are generally open. I lock my door for vacations, and that's about it. 2am Tuesday nights I am either in the shower or working...it's work hard, play hard. A sober night puts things in perspective. A lot of people drink, a lot don't, but those who do drink hard.

Charlie

Every single week I go to at least three lectures, filmings, events, free dinners... you name it. Normally I have to choose between two good events to go to. For example. Today I have waterskiing, a play and two lectures to go to (not that I'm required to, I just want to). Tomorrow I have another lecture and a concert. The biggest problem here is that there's too much to do. Who said small campuses don't have tons of activities?

Erin

There are all kinds of clubs here. I play sports so I don't really have the time for clubs. There are always prominent speakers on campus and theatre productions going on.

Betsy

About 50{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students are involved in either fraternities or eating houses (our alternative to sororities) but by no means are these groups exclusive or is there any pressure for students to join. All parties on campus are open to the entire student body, regardless of organization affiliation. Many people that aren't part of fraternities or eating houses still attend the parties. There are parties every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. On nights of big parties the Student Union sponsors an alternative event for people who don't want to go to the party. These events are campus favorites. Recently, they have had ice-skating in our Union, Build-A-Bear and Paint-Your-Own-Pottery. These activities are completely free.

Tyler

The eating house and fraternity scene is the main social life on campus. There are parties every weekend open to all students. Unfortunately, there is only one bar within walking distance of the campus, so it is very much an on campus social scene. Spring Frolicks is the pinnacle social event of the year. The weekend before spring exams, there are inflatable floats, bands playing, and students enjoying the spring weather.

Lejla

Students leave their doors open all the time. I can walk down any hall and peer in doors and just stop by rooms. Everyone is welcoming and friendly.

Jess

i love my eating house and swim team. they are both great places to meet people and find good, supporting friends. sometimes its tough to have multiple commitments, buti definitely think it's worth it in terms of getting the most out of my college years. lots of people party on the weekends (and sometimes on wednesdays...) which helps many unwind from a stressful week of school.

Julia

There are so many organizations to get involved in. Everyone can easily find their place.

Katherine

Dorms are very fun - doors unlocked, open generally; dating scene is terrible

Julie

Davidson social life centers areound Patterson court, a community of Fraternities and eating houses who host parties open to the entire campus. Students are overall very friendly and open. Athletic events and speakers are some of the most popular non weekend events.

Torry

Athletes are 1/4 of the student body so that plays a large part in student life. There is an honor code, so it's fine to leave your door open, your ipod on the desk, etc. There is always something going on on campus, whether it be a court party, a movie with friends, or the Brickhouse.

Emily

patterson court and the athletic teams have been the main part of my social life. it has been an incredible experience, being able to meet people and remain good friends with such a large group of people

Madeline

Social life is pretty good. Participation in Patterson court could be better. Love the eating house system for girls. Fraternities are good.

Lindsay

For such a small school, there is way too much to do. However, the library always seems to be the hot spot. The library is often a very activie school scene. There is always an interesting speaker on campus or a fundraiser to participate in. Everyone knows everyone and is usually pretty friendly. Davidson matches freshmen roommates according to a personality test and they are usually pretty on point. My roommate from freshmen year is still my roommate and one of my best friends. They match freshmen dorm halls too. I know many seniors who are still best friends with the kids on their freshmen hall. Partying revolves around the eating houses and fraternities which is fun and there are also activities for the non-partiers as well. However there is no music scene. If live music and bars are your thing, Davidson is lacking in those areas.

Lee

the men's ultimate frisbee team is very good. fraternities and their female equivalent, eating houses, are on campus, but they are not used for housing (rather, eating and partying). either you're in a serious relationship or you're hooking up - not much of a dating scene. everyone loves the basketball games. there are always activities in the student union for sober fun late-night weekends. drunks welcomed.

Reese

Basketball team is worshiped. Soccer teams are pretty cool too. But the team with the reputation for being the most fun is the Lacrosse team. its really cool that about one out of every five people is a Division one athlete, so you everyone on campus is very active. There are lots of trails and fun things to do in terms of athletics. You will meet all your best friends on your freshman hall which is cool because you are matched up via the meyers-briggs personality test. Frats and Eating houses are dominant social scene, but they are not exclusive at all and are sooooo much fun. The union board always plans so many fun sober events like ice skating or pottery painting or chick-fil-a coming, and of course these events are always free.

Quinn

Most socially enthusiastic students choose to join an eating house or fraternity. Students never lock their doors, and generally leave their dorm room doors open, encouraging interaction and conversation. Parties on campus take place three days a week, though students find other ways to celebrate more often. Different student groups bring musical groups, etc. to campus, and speakers can be found just about every week.

Meredith

The parties are awesome! Fraternities and eating houses know how to have fun, and the parties are always open to all of campus. That means they are well-attended and can get crazy. The scene is also safe though, so it's a great atmosphere.

Alex

most people work really hard and then party really hard, no real in between

Lisle

small community, so you get to know people and well trusting environment, everyone leaves their stuff out the court parties are mainly focused around alcohol, but there are many many other options to have fun on the weekends

Lauren

Most people are in an eating house or fraternity, and the court dominates the social scene. A lot of students are athletes as well.

Katie

The smallness of Davidson allows students to truly form their own ideas of the ideal social life. Students have just as much fun at a party as they do making gingerbread houses on a Friday night. You really choose your pick, or participate in both, it is simply the beauty of Davidson.

Alex

men's basketball is definitely the most popular. dorm rooms are usually left open. the dating scene is more on a hookup basis; i think this is mostly due to time constraints. with the small size of the school and all that we have to offer along with the academic rigors, students are left with very little time to work on new relationships. drinking helps alot for your social life here at campus...otherwise all there is is the student union with some ok events from time to time.

kat

I hope you like to drink. Davidson is a small small town and the social life is restricted by that; but alcohol can liven just about anything and Davidson is no exception. Im not inviting anyone to get plastered and make ignorant decisions (though that can be fun too), im just admitting that it is a very good way to blow off a whole lot of steam.

Parker

for those people who want to hang out there's lots to do in terms of frat and court parties but i would say about 30{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of the student body sticks to their room or the student union activties on the weekends

kelly

there are low-key fraternities and eating houses to join. they are not as intense as southern fraternities and sororities, but are very inclusive and anyone can join. there are always parties to go to thrown by the houses, and anyone is allowed to attend, whether or not they belong to the house. alcohol is definitely present - however, there is little to no hazing or pressure to drink. parties usually occur on fridays and saturday nights, as well as lower-key wednesday night parties. day parties on the weekend are occasionally thrown as well. i dont really know what people do if they dont want to party or drink - there are always activities going on at the union that are catered to people who chose not to drink.

Erin

Most people at Davidson play a sport. I think something like a quarter of our student body are division I athletes and a half participate in either club or intermural sports. So if you enjoy athletics, there are a lot of opportunities here to participate. Another popular thing on campus are frats and eating houses. We have 8 fraternities and 4 eating houses. Eating Houses are sort of like sororities but less exclusive in that the freshmen get to pick which one they'd like to be in. Each house and frat picks a charity/cause and raises money for it. Some do big events and others do year long projects, it just depends on the house. Eating houses and frats are also pretty responsible for the weekend social scene. Every weekend there is at least one party, always themed (and yes, everyone dresses up). They're like giant dance parties and so much fun. A lot of people participate in the frats and eating houses, but it's not important to do so. All of the parties are open to anyone on campus and people not affiliated with anything are always more than welcome to go eat with their friends in the houses. It really just comes down to personal preference of whether or not you want to be in one.

Blake

Patterson court pretty much dominates the social scene. there are a bunch of apt parties and parties on the court at either frat houses or eating houses. many parties are themed - davidson kids really like to dress up.

Blake

Tons of people are on athletic teams. I think about 80{4a082faed443b016e84c6ea63012b481c58f64867aa2dc62fff66e22ad7dff6c} of students are student-athletes and most of the campus also belongs to a fraternity or an eating house.
