DePauw University Top Questions

What's the one thing you wish someone had told you about freshman year?

Megan

I wish I would have known that choosing a college should be about where one feels the most at home. It should not be about how much money a college gives you but it should be where you are the happiest. Also, if one has something in their life that they love and feel strongly about they should follow whatever their passion is. I wish I would have known to follow my passion instead of picking somewhere my parents approved of.

Sierra

There are a few things that I wish I had known before attending DePauw, but one of the more important things is the campus climate. They can tell you all that you need to know about campus, but one thing that they don't tell you is that the campus is divided up amongst the ranks. Greek organizations and the different racial groups make up our small community. Coming from elsewhere as a minority, you will be in for a shock when you see the divisions here at DePauw.

Chelsea

Your best friend should be your syllabus, it tells you what your entire academic life will be like for the duration of the semester. This is important because you can plan the rest of your life around your academics, that way when you have a crazy week of tests you don't buy a ticket the to Nicki Minaj concert near you.

Lauren

I wish I had known how fiscally conservative but socially liberal students at DePauw are. It is a small campus in a small town with a huge emphasis on community service. Often the people who are drawn to community service are motivated for religious resasons or social pressures. That is not what you find here. I would guess many of the students at DePauw have a strong internal desire to help. The general feeling is that we are all part of a much bigger world; and we have an obligation to those who inhabit this world with us.

Kathryn

Because the majority of DePauw students join sororities or fraternities, having a better understanding of Greek life would have made the transition to college faster and easier.

Kiara

I wish I knew which professors not to take so I could recieve better grades. Some professors are stuck in their ways and do not give past a certain grade reguardless to how well a student excels in the class.

Kelly

I wish I had known about all the scholarship and honor programs that I could've applied to through the school.

Kurt

I wish I would have known more about how difficult it is to be pre-med and a biology major at the same time. It's definitely difficult to get in all my other classes that are required, finish my bio major, and take all my pre-med requirements. Bio-chem would have been the way to go. On the other hand, I found out that I like biology much more because of this and will probably go to graduate school to obtain a Ph.D..

Austin

I wish I would have known some more about the Greek life on campus, how it is intertwined so heavily with the social scene but also realized how one can survive well outside its boundaries. I also wish I would have known how much DePauw was going to raise tuition over the four years I attended.

Kathryn

I wish I had known that while DePauw offers a wonderful education, it does not offer job skills. I am having trouble finding a solid career right now partly due to the economy, but also because I do not have the skills and experience that employers are looking for.

Charles

I wish I would have known how extremely Greek oriented it was.

Sabrina

I wish I would've known how much tuition would increase while I am here. The large increases have caused me to have to take out many more student loans than I would like.

Kandis

The small size of the town.

Robert

Nothing. I came with expectations, was anxious to explore that which was unknown.

Alex

I wish I had known just how secluded it was, and that I could ask for help more often.
