Dutchess Community College was my first option upon this pandemic starting and I will say that everything from admissions to navigating through the websites is extremely easy. I recommend simply doing online and being able to build your own schedule. Picking your classes has never been easier considering there is a lot of access to help.

The college has a strong faculty but not all of the professors that share the same department are on the same page. Two students would be taking the same course but would have different professors. One student would be getting an A and the other one was struggling to get a C. The professors definitely need to communicate more about how they choose to present the same material. It was always very easy to find drugs and alcohol simply because of the environment where the school was located. Poughkeepsie is a very poor inner-city and also there weren't many rules enforced at all. It was very easy to get into the residence hall and I was not a resident student. It was very easy to get in drugs or alcohol or anything that was not supposed to be on the campus because of the security. This also makes it worse simply because it was a dry campus and still is. They do not have the best security because it is a community college and student don't necessarily stay on campus except for the ones that live there. The college is in the process of becoming a 4-year school but it has a lot of work to do before it can reach that point.

If you're planning on going to college, why not do your core requirements at a local college? Dutchess Community College has a wide selection of classes and mostly good professors, and most classes will transfer to a four year school. There is a lot of help available for those who choose to take advantage of it.

Dutchess is definitely like grade 13, but it can be great for a student hoping to prepare for their next college. Dutchess helped me restart my life in a why I probably would not have been able to do at other school. I was able to create a new and better GPA and find a love for learning. Teachers at the school are wonderful ( when you find the right ones) because they really challenge your ideas and do not take community college for an excuse. Many people do not take advantage of these opportunities and actually complain about the work , but I believe it is great because you can get a great education for a very affordable price. On the other hand many of the students enjoy partaking in a lot of events non academic related (eve though it is a dry campus) affecting their education being that it is all they do. This can be a distraction depending on the type of person you are or it can be ignored. This would be a lot easier to ignore if there were a lot more activities on campus for residence enjoy. Dutchess does have a very large list of campus clubs, but many of them are not involved. Moral of the story: Great school to help you get back on your feet, but don't waste your opportunity because they may give you multiple chances, but your next school won't.

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

My first piece of advice to my high school self would be to focus more and to stop procrastinating. Breaking the habbit early on is much easier. College is different than high school and your work is more important than it was in high school. In life we are constantly working to make sure that we have a better future and college is a major stepping stone that will determine the rest of your future. Being able to focus and get work done will help you keep a clear mind without becoming over stressed. In the end hard work and dedication will pay off even if at the moment it seems that there is no hope. I would also tell myself to relax and enjoy life because soon enough your childhood is goinng to be over. Enjoy what you have before it is gone. The people that you once thought you could never live with out will move on and so will you. Life changes people. So enjoy it while it is still there and make the best of everything that you do.

  5. What's unique about your campus?

The best thing about my school is it's value. It has the lowest tuition in NY state but yet sacrifices nothing for such a low cost. The fact that a collegiate institution for continuing education is so overwhelmingly inexpensive but yet still teaches text book and life lessons is phenomenal. It's campus is a beautiful sight, yet small enough to not have to spend an hour trying to traverse the whole thing. The buildings are all structurally sound and simply quite stunning. It truly amazes me how the administration can keep such a beautiful school so inexpensive.

  6. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

I currently attend class at the South campus of DCC. I'm in my mid twenties and very serious about my school work and I find most of the students at the South Campus are fresh from high school and think college is a joke or a waste of time. It stresses me out to a point because I was just like that once and I wish I could impart my experience on to them so they won't make the same mistake of putting college off for so long.
