What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

Kristen

If I could go back and talk to my high school senior self, I would tell my self to not worry about what living with a roommate will be like. I would also tell my self that not to worry about making friends, that its easier than you think it will be.

ReGina

I would tell myself that college is an entirely different world, compared to the highschool life. First off, your on your own. You make your own decisions from here on out. So you need to be smart about how you manage your time and how you make use of it. So many people join the procrastination bandwagon; dont join them. And lastly, your there to get a good education and hopefully figure out what you want to do with your life, but your also there to have a good time.

Cortnee

If I could go back in time and talk to myself as a high school senior, I would tell myself to enjoy this time of fun, easy going, stress free time. Once you get into college the demand of school work and responsibilities is much greater, so be prepared to take on a lot more in college. I would also say too though, college will open your eyes to so much more than you think of the community and world around you. In college you u learn so much more about who you are and what you want to do in this world to make a difference. College molds you into the person you will grow to be and it prepares you to go into the world and feel confident about what you want to achieve. I would tell the young Cortnee, along with all my young school mates, to enjoy this time in high school but be prepared to learn and achieve so many great things during your time and college.

Brandon

I would say " Do not worry. Its all going to work out and you will be fine. Know that you are at college for the education first. A career, finances, female companionship, and networking will take care of it self and fall into place at the right time."Friends are going to be less superficial and populartiy and image are not so important. "Do not be afraid of new expirences but remeber how you where raised. Don't be arrogant and be open to others opinion and ideas." Trust your instinks because they will help you the most." Wear flip flops to the shower, use the coffee lid as a spoon, clothes can be refreshed in the dryer, socks and underwear are going to start feeling like great gifts to recieve, and call mom often because she is the most proud and will be the one there for you when its over." These are going to be the best years, so enjoy and remeber them!

So far Ive gained quite a bit of useful knowledge, I am a Mass Comm Major and in this feild there are many different options avalible to me, and becuase of the wide variety it gives me a chance to really scope out my options and decide what's best for me and hopefully by next year make a decision on what I want to do post graduation. The staff has been super helpful in guiding me in the right direction I have had two advisors so far that have really made an impact on my life and I feel that I am very blessed to be able to attend a fine college such as East Central University. It will be a college experience I will never forget. I would reccommend it to anyone to attend here.

I think that the biggest thing is the committment to education and the process that I have to do to get the "job" done. I have to get up early for an eight o'clock class and drive into Ada as I don't live on campus. I don't have the pleasure of my parents paying for everything so I work full time. I have had to learn time management and money management "101" to be able to even go to school. I realize that the professors are there to educate me and as an adult it is up to me to learn the material or I won't get the grade that I deserve. I realize that as each semester approaches and I have to choose new classes to get into, my sense of security is threatened. Meaning that I don't like to go or be somewhere where I don't know anyone. As I finish a semester I realize how easy it was to get to know my classmates. The college environment is a busy one, but one that is welcoming. The professors see that you are not left to yourself. College is "GREAT".

COLLEGE IS MANY LEVELS ABOVE HIGH SCHOOL. I LOVE IT WHEN A PROFESSOR SAYS 'WE ARE ALL ADULTS HERE. I EXPECT YOU TO DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU.' COLLEGE IS JUST THAT. DOING WHAT IS BEST FOR ME. HIGH SCHOOL LAYS THE FOUNDATION FOR AN OPEN MIND TO LEARN AND A DISCIPLINE TO STUDY. COLLEGE BRINGS OUT THE DESIRE AND INTEREST FOR A FUTURE THAT SEEMS SO MUCH MORE TANGIBLE FROM THIS ANGLE. NOT EVERY STUDENT LOVES EVERY CLASS, OR EVEN ENJOYS THEM. BUT OVERALL MOST OF US ARE THERE BECAUSE WE HAVE A DESIRE FOR A BETTER FUTURE. TO BE THE BEST WE CAN BE. THROUGH THIS MENTALITY AND FOCUS, WE CAN HAVE A BETTER WORLD. EVERY INDIVIDUAL THAT EXCELLS IN ANY GIVEN AREA I HAVE KUDOS FOR THEM. WHEN WE ARE FINALLY "GROWN UP," TOGETHER, WITH THE PAST SUCCESSES OF OTHERS IN OUR MINDS, WE CAN COME TOGETHER TO HELP OUR WORLD BE THE BEST THAT IT CAN BE.

Attending college has knocked me on my rear end - then taught me how to get back up again and take care of myself. At first I was pretty haughty since I knew how to do laundry and (thought I knew) how to study and do well. However, college life is completely different from high school, and I took a beating several times - from research papers that I had to actually work on - HARD - to finish to managing my own diet when presented with a buffet two meals a day. What is great is that the faculty and staff at my school helped me pick myself up and learn how to handle all of this, and now I feel settled in and prepared to take on just about anything again.

I've learned know matter what person I encounter, male, female, black, white or in between, each one has something of interest to give, that is if you take time to listen and learn. The classes I have attended I fell will help me further my eduction and reach my final goal of becoming a nurse and what ever problems others may have I will have to deal with, I 'm better prepair.

Joy

I have learned more about people and how to be more tolerant of people with disabilities.I also have discovered why I want to run a ranch for troubled teens, runaways, unsupported mothers, orphans ,and court appointed teens. Bassiclly those who have no where else to turn. It has been valuable for me to attend because I have learned that I can help others ,and that is amazing to me so I have made it my purpose in life to help others.

I have gotten a lot from my experience at this school. I have been able to be myself and communicate with people that have the same interests as I do. I have made a lot of life long friends at this school. It has been an asset in attending college. I believe now that I can go out and get a very good job, doing what I love best. I owe that to my parents and my teachers. They have given me the confidence to be the best that I can be. I am glad that they pushed me so hard at this school.

Amanda

Being a high school senior, I did not know what to expect from college. I was always worried that it would be so much more difficult than high school, that I would not be able to accomplish the tasks required. Stress was abundant. If I could go back in time and talk to my high school senior self, I would tell myself not to worry so much. College is not that much harder, and it is nothing to stress so much about. Enjoy every minute, take it slow, and just be calm. I would tell myself to be prepared to be away from home, but it isn't the end of the world...there are still weekends. I would also advise myself to start looking for a job earlier, because they go quickly. It is a college town, after all.

If i could go back to my senior year, I would tell myself to be more involved in extra curricular activities, and to focus on volunteering a little more. Most applications for scholarships want to know how you have impacted your school and community along with how well you did academically. I would also spend more time looking for scholarships, instead of just filling out the easy ones, because in the long run, scholarships and financial aid are VERY important. The final thing that I would advise is to be prepared for the classes, and not expect it to be just like high school. If I had known the things I now kno about college, I think I would be in much better shape and more ready to embrace the future.

Jordan

Going back now, as a Freshman in College, and looking back at myself as a senior in high school. i would most likely tell myself to not spend so much time on certain things, i would tell myself to take challenging courses in high school. so that my mind would still be in use, instead of basically taking English III and having the rest of my classes as blow off classes. i'd try to convince myself to take courses at ECU as well, to get maybe one or two classes out of the way. i'd also try and prepare myself for college; for example: start good studying habbits, eating healthy, and staying in shape instead of never doing anything.

Zack

Looking back on my high school career and the transition to college seems so long ago because of the experiences that have formed me into who i am today since then. If i were able to go back and give myself some sound advice senior year i would say that giving yourself the opportunity to succeed is the most important thing you can do, in other words setting yourself up for success throughout your actions and intentions. Including making sound decisions about future along with respected advice of those who matter to you in your life. Life is something that doesn't change for you, ultimately you will have to be malleable enough to adapt to the situations you are put in whether it is something you are in control of or not. Nevertheless focusing on things that you CAN change is what is important in order for you to find your true niche and ultimately succeed in the endeavor of education. In order to be a successful student we must not deviate from our own morals, standards and aspirations. We must be in power. Definition of power- The ability to achieve ones goals despite the oppositions of others.

Sarra

I would tell myself to go to class. That is the most important thing on my campus. If you do not show up you will not pass the class. You miss three class periods with no warning, after that your grade drops a letter grade for each absence, unless it is for an academic reason or you are sick and have a doctors note. Make sure you study really hard for all of your classes and make sure you do not go partying all night. Partying is a bad habit and I have seen the affects of it on some of my friends. So in short STUDY, GO TO CLASS, HAVE FUN AND MAKE LOTS OF FRIENDS!!!

Danon

If I could go back in time and tell myself what I know now about college and all the adjustments I had to make, life might be a little easier. As a high school senior I had so many plans for myself and thought about how much fun living the college life would be. I would have told myself to enjoy my youth and enjoy the remaining days of my high school career. Yes, plans are good to have, but I did not keep in mind about how hard I would have to actually work for what I want to achieve. I would have reminded myself the reason why i wanted to go to college and how i wanted a better future than what my parents had. I would have started college off on the right foot and stayed on top because coming back up from the bottom would be more difficult.

Kara

Follow your heart! Don't let anyone make decisions for you. It is your own future and you have to be in control of it... RIGHT? Work hard and don't ever give up, even when you feel your back against the wall. Take your time and strive for success!

Nicholas

Talk to current students not just tour guides but normal everyday students in the department that their child would like to study in to know what to really expect from their college experiance.

Keni

Basically, I would have to tell them to make sure and visit the school before enrolling and not just look at pictures or go by what other people tell you, especially the recruiters. The other thing that you need to pay a lot of attention to is the scholarship or financial aid/loan money becasue school have a very good way of making something no so good look a lot better than it really is. Overall, make sure that the future student really likes it there because they are going to be there for at least 4 months and if you dont like a school or where your at, it will reflect in your school work and will speed up the "getting burnt out" phase and you really dont want to get burnt out. Most of all, pay attention to the small things becasue that will be the things that make or break a school.

Noelle

Make sure that you pick school that meets the needs of your career goals, town, activity , and professor interaction with the students

Dianna

Never choose a school based on its name and history. Instead, visit the campus. Talk to the students and, more importantly, talk to the professors for your major. Many times you will find that the right school is the unknown one that happens to have one amazing department. Also, ask how many of the classes are taught by graduate students or assistants. As a general rule, the smaller the class sizes are, and the higher the number of classes that are taught by professors, the better the college experience will be. Also, be sure to find out what forms of support and social activities are available to students. It is important to make sure that you will actually be able to fit into the campus life. Finally, find out what scholarships, internships, and enrichment activities (study/travel abroad, field study, research and presentation opportunities, community service/service learning, etc) are available through the university. These are often an important aspect of the college experience.

There are many important parts of selecting a college, but it mostly depends on what is most important to you. Do you want to stay close to home, or do you plan to do a bat-out-of-Hades impression the second you get your diploma? Is academics or sports more important to you? Do you need a good financial aid package, or can you afford to shell out a little extra for tuition? Your answers to these questions will begin to form a picture of the college you want to attend. In my case, I wanted to stay close to my fiance (and my dog), and I was offered a full ride at a middle-sized nearby university My decision was an easy one, but in some instances it may not be so simple. It is important to remember that there is no such thing as a perfect college. But as you look over your choices and and the pros and cons of each, one university will soon emerge as the best college for you.

Whitney

Think about it seriously. And choose wisely. It's okay to changes majors just remember it takes longer if you do!!

Finding the right school for a student can be a daunting task when first begining. However with the right tools and advice finding the ideal school far a particular student can be a swift process. When determining which school is correct for a student, the student must first ask of them selves a few questions. The first question being distance. The student must determine if they are comfortrable with living more than a long drive from home. If not than a school with the state may be more suited for the student. Next they should decide what field of study they want to persue. If the selected career field is highly specialized then the avalibility of schools and classes may be limited . Fields such as cartography are only avalible at a few schools in the United States. Next the student should consider the size of school they wish to attend. If the student does not feel comfortrable going to a school with a population larger than thier home town than a smaller school may be in order. Once the school of choice so selected then it is up to the student to make thier experience what they want.

Look for good facilities and find somewhere that has a good atmosphere and caring teachers. And that has a good outlook on after college job finding....

Lacy

One thing I learned from looking for colleges was, what may have been good for you may not be good for your kid. They are their own different person, as cliche as that sounds.

Coby

I suggest that you look at the cost of tuition first and foremost. My college is considerably less than most but still really high for me and my family. Next, and probably in a tie with the first, look at the area of studies available. Other things to look at depend on the individual in my opinion. I personally looked at the closeness to home. Always think about the atmosphere and environment that your child of you will be going into. College is a fun and interesting place to be and it can only be so if that college is the right one for you.

Future college students need to understand that if they want to party and have fun all the time in college, they are going to fail. There is a very important balance that needs to be paid attention to between studying and partying. Becausae what's the good in having a college education if you got all C's and you didn't learn anything? The most important thing is to choose the college that is best for you and you're particular major. Deciding what you want to study before you start taking courses is very imporetant too. Otherwise you will decide to change your major halfway through school, realize that your school doesn't have the major you want, and find out that all the time you spent in class and all the money you spent on books and tuition becomes inconsequential if you transfer to another school, so you might as well finish up here and then get a degree elsewhere.

Brad

To find a school like East Central were you feel more like friends and family, rather then teachers and students. It makes for a much less stressful experience. Allowing you to do better then you probably thought in every class you take.

James

My advice to parents would be to know their children, and be realistic with them. Most soon-to-be college students look for a college based primarily on the college's name or reputation. Whether or not the college is right for them is not something that they particularly think about. Yes, that huge universty that costs an exorbidant amount might impress the company for which you are applying, but if your grades are lacking compared to someone who went to a smaller college with direct access to a real professor, then suddenly you're not as special as you should be. Basically, a pound of fools gold may look the same as real gold, but it sure is worth a lot less. Remind your children that they can always transfer.

Chris

well you need to select a college that meets your needs. if you are a big city person than maybe you would feel more comfortable in a large city because that is what you are familiar with. on the other hand a small town college may be comfortable for a small town person. research the university and its degree programs. find out if the courses offered will benifit you after graduation when you are applying for jobs. also find out about tuition fees. some universities are more expensive than others. one last tip, dont go to a college where you dont know anyone. if you are going to a college away from home, try to make it one where you know someone. nobody likes to go to a place and feel alone and lost. that is the reason many students get home sick. of course you are going to make new friends, but it is just easier to have someone there that you know and trust already.

Katie

Find a school that offers quality education in the specific area in which you are interested. Some great schools have poor departments in individual areas, and some less-prestigious schools have more effective individual colleges. Keep in mind professor-to-student ratio, as well as professor availability, and choose a school that will challenge you without overwhelming you.

Daniel

I would say that you first need to figure out what you want to get out of school. Every college offers different opportunities and every college has a different atmosphere to it. Once you've figured that out reseacrch the schools you are interested in and see if they fit your needs. Then definately take a tour of the campus. You may get there and decide a big university is overwhelming or maybe that the field you want to study isn't very encouraged at that school. Once you've picked your school make the most of it. Make enough money to always have a little in your pocket but college isn't the time to work like crazy to make money. There is so much to be learned not only in class but outside of class that you really need to enjoy college as much as you can. Volunteer for something you really care about and find a club on campus that fits your personality so you can start to get to know your classmates. College is a great place to build relationships and your education so take advantage of it and have fun, it's over pretty quickly.

Kristen

Picking the right college is a very big decision. The advice I would give is to plan visits to different colleges that you are considering. Once you have visited all the universities, the next step is deciding on the colleges to apply to. The big deciding factor on how many schools to apply to is the application fees. Once you have been accepted to the school of your choice you should get involved in campus life. The best way to get involved is in student organizations. There are a large amount of organizations that you can get involved in. To get the best college experience you should also interact with your professors. They are the ones that can help you get the most out of college. They have connections that can help you in the future.

Ajeena

you have to go get a tour from the college you are wanting to go to. check out all the financal aid and scholarship opportunities. dont go somewhere because it closer to somewhere or something like that. go somewhere that you feel yourself at.

Larry

When picking a college, you want the student to feel safe. Picking a safe environment surrounding the campus is always a top priority. Next visit the campus, before attending, to see how big the classrooms are. I believe being in a classroom with about 20 to 30 students is better than being in a class of 100 at one time. Being in a small class helps the students with getting help with their homework if they need it. This is because the professors know the students by name, so the student feels more comfortable asking for help in a smaller environment compared to a large one.

Cathleen

Visit the colleges and ask lots fo questions

Amber

Find a college that has a great success rate for those who have graduated previously in the field of study in which you are interested in. Be familiar with the schools surroundings, and what all that school has to offer. Ask questions. A good school has people willing to help and answer any questions you may have reguarding your education and the credentials that school has to offer. A friendly staff is what makes your life on campus enjoyable. A friendly staff will also be able to help you strive to reach your educational goals. So check out the campus or campuses of the college you would like to attend. Take in its surroundings, and ask any and all questions you may have.

christie

I would advise to take the core curriculum first. this will give you some exposure to college life and a look at some of your options. utilize the career development center and remember people don't plan to fail they fail to plan

Randell

Look to where you strengths will go the farthest. Make sure you do not choose a major before your Junior year. Things change. Opinions change. Life changes. Parents, make sure your child is doing what makes them happy, not you reliving your childhood through them and support them no matter what.

Destiny

One of the most important things to consider when deciding on a college is what you want to do with the rest of your life, and don't panic if you can't figure it out! College should be thought provoking, but at the same time, enjoyable! Choosing a college is like picking out your favorite pair of shoes. Do you buy them because they're cute? Do you fall in love with the comfort of the insoles? Students need to realize the importance of doing something they thoroughly enjoy. Take a long deep look into each college you are considering, and make note of its strong points, as well as its weak points. Each college is different, so be careful to pick the one that fits your own personal style! College opens the door for furthering one's education, but don't forget that it also offers activites to help students adjust socially. Parents, don't forget, it is their decision. Help your child in this long process, but don't do all the work for them. Allow them to be responsible, and encourage them to get the most our of their once-in-a-lifetime college experience!

Tyler

When it comes to choosing the right college there are many different things that a parent/student should look at. Does the college that you want to attend specialize or at least have a good reputation for your prospective field of study? Does the college have a diverse student population, one that the student would be comfortable in? And is the college affordable? These are just a few questions that many people should consider when it comes to finding the right college. One thing that many people do is just overlook the importance of researching colleges and universities, and that can be a major mistake. Prospective parents/students should take the time and find the college that will make them get the most out of their educational experience.

Jun

Look for a college that not only has all the classes you need for your major, but also has an atmosphere you enjoy. For some, large colleges make them uncomfortable while smaller colleges may not have enough to keep others satisfied, social wise. A great idea is to join clubs and groups that interest you so that you may meet new people and friends.

Brandon

Join a Fraternity or Sorority, be active on campus, make a lot of friends, and go out and socialize! Focus on your academics first but make friends because the friends you make in college are some of the best ones you'll ever have!
